Work Text:
“Moooom.”
“Hold still, Simon. I’m almost done.”
Simon sighs, wiggling and scratching his temples. He could feel the tugging in his hair as his mom braided it. His hair had been getting too long and he was annoyed whenever it went in his face or his mouth.
He had begged his mom to cut it and she had agreed on the condition she could braid it.
And now here they were.
He leaned back in her lap, reaching up to try and touch it and his mom gently pushed his hand away. “Not yet, baby. I’m not done.”
“Are you almost done?” He huffed, slouching and playing with the sheath in his hands. He didn’t think it would take this long to braid his hair.
“You’re so impatient.” She sounds amused and he can feel her press a kiss to the crown of his head. He sinks further into her when something goes rumbling by and she shushes him softly.
He can feel her tying off the end of the braid and she smooths her fingers along them, making sure she doesn't miss anything. “There, wiggle worm. All done.”
Simons hand shot up to feel the braids, petting the bumps and playing with the ends that stuck out past his neck. “They’re kinda tight, mama.”
“They’re supposed to be.” She holds out a slightly dull piece of metal for him to see his reflection. He squints, turning his head this way and that. He didn’t usually have his hair out of his face but he kinda liked it.
He turned to look up at his mom with a beaming smile. “I like it.”
She laughs, wrapping her arms around his waist and holding him close. “I’m glad. If you want, I can teach you how.”
“Can I braid your hair?” He reaches out and touches her dark curls, pulling gently. His mom pulls his hand away and nods, nudging him off her lap.
“Of course. And then, when you’re older, you can do this for yourself.”
