Chapter Text
Midoriya Izuku was quite frankly done. With so many things, soulmates, school, his mom. Midoriya loved his mom and she cared. She always had but it was too much. She never let him do anything (not like he had anything to do) but a nice run here and there without her scrambling to protect him from an imaginary villain attack would be great. He had to talk her out of asking Kachan to escort him everywhere, god if Midoriya had to talk to that explosive, self hating egotist for more than 6 and a half hours a day he would be obligated to blow his brains out. Midoriya saw where his mom was coming from really, Bakugou Katsuki was burnt into Izuku’s soul by fate; he was trusted. But Midoriya also had Bakugou’s quirk burnt into his skin so he thought it pretty much canceled out.
“I'm fine mom, I'm just walking to school.” Midoriya said pulling his shoes on, his moms fretting was starting to fray his nerves. Her voice was frantic but soft, he was quirkless, he understood where she was coming from; he really did.
“And Katsuki is meeting you by the bridge, still?” was responded with “yes” no.
“He’s protecting you from those bullies right?” answered with another “yes” while Midoriya's mind yelled NO with so much anger it hurt. Soulmates were stupid. Midoriya closed the door and walked away from his apartment as fast as he could before his mom could add anymore questions to their one sided conversation. Midoriya walked on autopilot, he walked the long way to school to avoid the bridge Bakugou and his friends hung out around before school, the breeze was warm as the end of school approached. The wonderful end of junior high and onto high school applications. Midoriya couldn’t wait to be rid of Katsuki. Hopefully the only time Midoriya sees Katsuki after junior high is through a tv screen, maybe the sports festival if he gets into UA so his mom doesn't worry about their relationship.
The walk is quiet until he reaches the gates of his school when he hears the annoying yet ever present voices of Bakugou and his lackeys. Midoriya spares a glance behind him, when he turns his head so he knows they won’t see him roll his eyes he scolds his expression to only a mild glare at the floor. He hears them closing in and braces to shut the hell up for his own sake (and their ego’s). For a moment they just stand in front of him staring, Midoriya raises an eyebrow, “are you just going to block the entrance or move” Midoriya says without thinking. When his mind catches up to just came out of his mouth Midoriya decides this is the day he dies and has a whole essay titled ‘you useless loser why would you say that you're going to die’ written across his brain.
“The hells you say blank, we’re above you” the black haired one said, well he was already going to die.
“You heard me pinocio, move” Midoriya said while gaslighting himself into thinking he could outrun them after school. Thank god for the bell and Bakugou’s need for perfection because all he heard was a muttered “Fuck.” and they left. Midoriya felt his soul leave his body in an exhale. He walked class slower than normal. His teacher would scold him and then go back to ignoring him so avoiding being in the halls any longer with his bullies was great.
“Midoriya, you're late,” the teacher said loudly, interrupting the quiet of the homeroom, the papers on the desks looked like career sheets and high school options. Great. “And your balding,” Midoriya muttered under his breath. “What was that?” the teacher asked, pointing the ruler that had been sitting on the teacher's desk a moment before Midoriya waved his hands in front of himself anxiously. “I said sorry sensei,” Midoriya said, like a liar. His teacher believed him, so Midoriya walked to his desk. Putting his head on his desk Midoriya read over the paper unwilling to lift his head back up. Where did he want to go? He thought it over, UA was his dream school but would it be worth another three years of school with Katsuki? Would he even see Katsuki if the blonde got into the hero course, probably not. Midoriya was having a great time staring out the window half asleep on his desk until the teacher asked the class where they wanted to go and how many wanted to become heroes. Truly a shame Midoriya’s sleepless night would have to be cured with an energy drink instead of a nap. “Midoriya is planning on UA.” a familiar mocking tone in Katsuki’s voice. Because Midoriya wasn’t allowed peace.
Midoriya covered his head with his arm to block out the laughter filling his senses, if felt suffocating. A few students came up with insults, others laughed, maybe a couple looked on in pity. He wasn’t sure to zoned out to care. The end of the day bell took too long to ring, it always did. The lunch bell rang and Midoriya grabbed his bag and left as fast as possible. He hid in the library, he was sat on the floor between the wall and a bookshelf. There was about two feet between the bookcase and the wall. It was soothing to lean against the wall behind him. Midoriya cracked open his energy drink. It was the first amazingly mediocre thing to happen all day. The music playing in his ears was quiet so he could hear the world around him. Midoriya wondered for a moment how sad he was to look at. Hidden behind books covered in dust, a grey carpet floor that had a stain that was only faintly there probably rubbed into the fabric by the kid who spilled it. The fans running made a subtle hum.
Midoriya heard footsteps and looked up to see a lower class man looking at the books on the shelf, she glanced over at him. She looked at him before down at her shoes. Red. vibrant red with white soles, like a target. There was a dull sadness to her eyes Midoriya understood. Her stare held a question of hope Midoriya didn’t want to answer honestly. Because the answer was no.
