Ashes in The Wind

Summary:

Weeks after the fall of the Cursed Realm, the ninja believe the story of Morro—the former Master of Wind—is finally over. Once Master Wu’s first and most promising student, Morro became consumed by bitterness after learning he was never destined to be the Green Ninja. His anger led him down a dark path that nearly destroyed everything, including possessing Lloyd and attempting to change destiny itself. But in the end, Morro made one final choice. He returned the Realm Crystal to Master Wu and allowed himself to fall into the Cursed Realm, sacrificing himself to stop the chaos he helped create. Everyone believed he was gone forever. Until the wind brought him back. Reborn in the monastery courtyard with the Realm Crystal at the center of the storm, Morro returns to life at nineteen—short, lean, sharp-tongued, and emotionally distant. Though alive again, he isn’t the same person he once was. Death has left him disconnected, blunt, and unpredictable. The ninja don’t trust him, and Morro makes no effort to earn that trust.

Chapter 1: The Wind That Came Back

Chapter Text

The monastery was quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that came after everything had already gone wrong.

The sun had barely risen over the mountains, pale gold light stretching across the stone courtyard. Mist clung to the steps and drifted lazily through the training yard where the ninja usually sparred in the mornings.

But no one was training today.

They were all gathered around the same spot.

A single object rested in the center of the courtyard.

The Realm Crystal.

No one touched it.

Not even Master Wu.

The old sensei stood with his hands folded inside his sleeves, his posture straight but tired. The wind stirred the edges of his robes as if the air itself was restless.

Lloyd stood beside him, arms crossed tightly.

His green eyes never left the crystal.

Kai leaned against the monastery railing nearby, jaw tight. His arms were folded and his shoulders tense, red gi bright against the gray stone.

Cole stood a little behind them, quiet and watchful.

Zane remained perfectly still beside him, analyzing the object with calm, icy focus.

Jay and Nya sat on the edge of the steps whispering to each other, though even their voices were quieter than usual.

None of them wanted to say the name hanging in the air.

But they were all thinking it.

Morro.

The former master of wind.

The ghost who had nearly destroyed them.

The one who had possessed Lloyd.

The one who had tried to rewrite destiny.

The one who—

Kai exhaled sharply.

"Why do we still have that thing here?"

His voice cut through the silence like a blade.

Jay shrugged uneasily.

"Because throwing it into a volcano apparently isn't an approved plan."

"It should be," Kai muttered.

Lloyd didn't look away from the crystal.

"He gave it back."

Kai immediately snapped his head toward him.

"Yeah, after trying to destroy the world."

Lloyd didn't argue.

Because Kai wasn't wrong.

But Lloyd remembered something the others didn't.

The look on Morro's face when he let go of the crystal.

That moment hadn't been anger.

It hadn't been revenge.

It had been…

Peace.

Wu stepped forward slowly.

"The wind has been restless since that day," the old master said quietly.

Cole frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Wu looked up at the sky.

Clouds drifted overhead—thin, pale, harmless.

Yet the air felt strange.

Like something unfinished lingered in it.

"Morro was my first student," Wu said.

His voice held the kind of regret that made everyone else uncomfortable.

"He was once the most promising ninja I had ever trained."

Kai scoffed.

"Yeah. And look how that turned out."

Wu didn't argue.

Because again—

Kai wasn't wrong.

The wind suddenly stirred.

Not a normal breeze.

Stronger.

Colder.

Jay shivered.

"Okay, that's creepy."

The wind circled the courtyard.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

Dust lifted from the ground.

Leaves spiraled upward.

The Realm Crystal began to hum.

Zane's head tilted slightly.

"Energy levels are increasing."

Kai pushed away from the railing.

"That's not good."

The wind roared louder.

It whipped through the courtyard like a living thing, spiraling tighter and tighter around the crystal.

Lloyd took a step back.

The air felt familiar.

Too familiar.

"No way…" he whispered.

Wu's eyes widened.

The wind exploded upward.

A column of green and black energy twisted violently into the sky.

Jay yelped and ducked behind Nya.

"What the heck is happening?!"

Cole shielded his face as debris scattered across the courtyard.

Kai braced his feet against the ground.

And then—

The wind collapsed inward.

Silence slammed down.

Something hit the stone with a dull thud.

The dust slowly settled.

Everyone stared.

A body lay on the ground in the center of the courtyard.

Thin.

Small.

Motionless.

Dark green and black fabric clung to a lean frame.

Black hair spilled across the stone.

A single green streak cut through it like lightning.

Gray eyes snapped open.

The first thing Morro saw was the sky.

The second thing he saw—

Was them.

His expression didn't soften.

Didn't change.

If anything, he looked annoyed.

Slowly, Morro pushed himself upright.

He looked around at the stunned ninja.

Jay blinked several times.

"Uh…"

He pointed.

"Is… is the dead ghost guy supposed to be alive again?"

Morro dusted off his sleeve.

"I was wondering where I ended up."

His voice was rough.

Real.

Alive.

Kai stared.

Every muscle in his body went rigid.

Lloyd didn't move.

His face had gone pale.

Morro noticed him immediately.

Of course he did.

Those gray eyes narrowed slightly.

"You're still alive."

Lloyd stiffened.

Kai instantly stepped forward, putting himself between them without even thinking about it.

Morro's gaze shifted to him.

Slow.

Unimpressed.

Kai glared.

"You've got some nerve showing up here."

Morro tilted his head.

"I didn't exactly plan the return trip."

His voice was blunt.

Flat.

Like he didn't care whether they believed him or not.

Cole crossed his arms.

"So you just… came back from the dead?"

Morro shrugged.

"Seems that way."

Jay whispered to Nya.

"I feel like we should be more concerned."

Nya whispered back.

"I am concerned."

Wu finally stepped forward.

"Morro."

The name carried weight.

History.

Pain.

Morro turned toward him.

For the first time, something flickered in his eyes.

Not warmth.

Not quite.

But something close to recognition.

Wu looked older than Morro remembered.

More tired.

"You returned the Realm Crystal," Wu said quietly.

Morro's shoulders lifted slightly.

"Yeah."

Wu studied him carefully.

"You sacrificed yourself."

Morro scoffed softly.

"Let's not make it dramatic."

Kai's patience snapped.

"You tried to kill Lloyd!"

The courtyard went tense instantly.

Morro looked back at him slowly.

His gray eyes were sharp.

Cold.

"Yeah," he said bluntly.

Lloyd inhaled sharply.

Kai stepped forward again, fists clenched.

"You possessed him. You nearly destroyed everything!"

Morro didn't look sorry.

He didn't look angry either.

He just looked… tired.

"I remember."

Kai expected excuses.

Or anger.

Or another threat.

Instead Morro simply looked away.

Like the conversation bored him.

That somehow made Kai even angrier.

"You don't even care?!"

Morro sighed.

"I died."

The statement was so simple it stunned everyone.

"I fell into the Cursed Realm," he continued flatly. "Then I stopped existing."

He looked at his hands.

Flexed his fingers slowly.

"So yeah. My emotional priorities might be a little scrambled."

The courtyard fell silent again.

Kai didn't lower his guard.

"That doesn't change what you did."

Morro met his eyes.

Something sharp sparked between them.

Not fear.

Not apology.

Something more dangerous.

"I know."

The words were quiet.

Honest.

And somehow that made Kai pause.

Morro stood fully now.

He was shorter than Kai expected.

Barely 5'5.

Lean.

Almost fragile looking.

But the wind stirred around him like it still belonged to him.

Power hummed in the air.

Cole muttered under his breath.

"Yeah… that's still the wind master."

Zane nodded.

"Confirmed."

Lloyd finally spoke.

"Morro."

Everyone looked at him.

Lloyd stepped forward slowly.

Kai grabbed his arm.

"Lloyd—"

"I'm fine."

Lloyd gently pulled away.

He stopped a few feet in front of Morro.

The wind between them shifted strangely.

Like it recognized them both.

Morro's gray eyes studied him carefully.

Lloyd took a breath.

"You saved us."

Morro looked uncomfortable.

"I fixed my mistake."

"It's still saving us."

Morro didn't respond.

Kai watched the whole exchange with growing irritation.

This was wrong.

All of it.

This guy had possessed Lloyd.

Broken him.

Used him.

And now he was just standing here like nothing happened?

Kai stepped forward again.

"Listen carefully."

Morro's gaze slid back to him.

"If you even think about hurting Lloyd again—"

The wind snapped sharply around Morro.

Not attacking.

Just reacting.

His gray eyes narrowed.

"Relax, fire boy."

Kai's eye twitched.

"Don't call me that."

Morro shrugged.

"You look like a fire boy."

Cole coughed to hide a laugh.

Kai glared harder.

"You think this is funny?"

Morro looked him up and down.

Slow.

Critical.

"No."

Then he added bluntly,

"I think you're loud."

Jay snorted.

Nya elbowed him.

Kai stepped closer.

Too close.

The wind stirred harder.

Heat flickered around Kai's fists.

The air between them crackled.

Wu raised his voice.

"Enough."

Both of them stopped.

But neither looked away.

Kai finally stepped back.

But his glare remained locked on Morro.

"This isn't over."

Morro shrugged again.

"I'm not planning on going anywhere."

Kai scoffed.

"We'll see."

Across the courtyard, Jay whispered quietly.

"I give them two days before they try to kill each other."

Cole crossed his arms thoughtfully.

"Or punch each other."

Nya tilted her head.

"...or something else."

Jay blinked.

"What does that mean?"

Nya smirked slightly.

"Nothing."

Meanwhile, the wind circled slowly around Morro.

Like it was welcoming him home.

And for the first time since he woke up—

Morro looked uncertain.

Not scared.

Just…

Lost.

And the last person he expected to notice it—

Was Kai.

Even if Kai would rather punch him than admit it.
