Work Text:

Usually, it would be loud on the twelfth floor of the Prosecutor’s office. Colleagues would be bursting into Miles Edgeworth’s office all day, asking for advice, discussing important evidence to a case or just to dump more work on him.
But it was surprisingly quiet that day.

Most of his colleagues were using their vacation days and spent their summer without worrying about work. Meanwhile, Miles Edgeworth didn’t even know what “taking a break” meant.
Therefore, one could find him exactly where one might think he’d be: He was at his desk, trying to figure out his latest case while checking out evidence and sipping his tea slowly.
It was quite a tricky murder case, so he had been in the office since the day before, trying to keep himself awake and concentrated by drinking multiple cups of the strongest variant of black tea he had.

Just as he was switching two photos of the crime scene, his tired eyes fell on the defense attorney who was laying on the couch of the office, reading the autopsy report of Edgeworth’s case and his heart leapt.

Phoenix, who immediately came over after finding out that his boyfriend hadn’t slept ever since they had woken up together the day before, brought over some food and sat down on the couch, demanding Miles to let him help with the case, but not before unsuccessfully trying to convince him to go back home and sleep.

Even though they had been dating for a while and Phoenix had been visiting him and helping him even before they started going out, to Miles, just seeing his partner still made his heart do silly things. Sometimes, even an accidental brush of their hands still made him blush and stutter at his partner’s shy smile.
He felt a smile creep onto his face while admiring Phoenix. The fact that he became a defense attorney just to see him again was such a shock to Edgeworth, he had accused him of bluffing just to flatter him. And after Phoenix forced his magatama on him to make him see that he was not bluffing, he had almost passed out. Who in their right mind would just change their whole life for just one person that he might see again?

As if Phoenix had noticed the pair of eyes on him, he let the autopsy report fall on his stomach and he looked over to Edgeworth, who quickly tried to refocus on the pictures in front of him, realizing he had fallen into a deep state of daydreaming.
“Miles.”
If the defense attorney really caught on his daydreaming, Miles would have to get ready to actually argue with Phoenix about not sleeping.
“Babe?”
But what if he just didn’t answer at all? Wasn’t this just more suspicious?
“Miles Edgeworth, if you don’t answer, I’m gonna throw out all of your tea, including the one you’re currently drinking.”

That made Edgeworth look back at Phoenix, getting ready to defend his tea collection, when Phoenix grumbled “Jesus, Miles, your eye bags are darker than mine back in uni.”
Miles scoffed at that, remembering everything that had happened to Phoenix during that time, as well as how exhausting studying law was. “I highly doubt that, Wright.”
“Well, maybe not as dark, but still dark enough.”
He sat up, placing the autopsy report next to him, his eyes filled with worry and annoyance.
“I noticed every time you yawned and counted,” he continued. Miles did not remember yawning a single time. “You clearly need sleep. Just give this case to someone else and let’s go home.”
Edgeworth shook his head and sighed. “I can’t.”
“Sure you can, it’s not like you’re the only prosecutor here.”
He just sighed again, putting his head into his hands, explaining “All the competent ones are currently on vacation. With a case this complex, I’d rather have someone who might be able to solve it take over. But I’m sure only I am left, so I cannot, Wright.”

Phoenix didn’t say anything to that, so Miles thought he had won the argument once again, so he triumphantly continued examining the evidence. But he was immediately proven wrong because Phoenix asked “When was the last time you took time off work?”
And Edgeworth’s face, who couldn’t hide his expressions well due to the lack of sleep, obviously showed that Phoenix had him cornered. The last time, if not the only time, the prosecutor had taken a vacation was when he had a bad cold, and that was quite a long time ago. But he couldn’t tell Phoenix that. So instead he went with “I take breaks during the weekend, therefore vacation isn’t needed.”

With a confident smirk, he took another photograph and compared it to the other evidence, before throwing a quick glance to his partner. He thought he was gonna look taken aback, or back off completely. Instead, Phoenix just stared at him.

“You work during the weekends too, Miles.”
“And what do you suggest I do?”
Suddenly, Phoenix was in front of him, placing his hands on his desk, a sneaky smile on his face.
“Let’s go on a vacation together! Somewhere at the beach maybe? We could leave the office now, I’ll bring you home where you’ll first sleep… And then we just take a break!”
With that, the evidence pictures fell out of Edgeworth’s hands.

“Wright” he said, noticing how he was slowly getting a slight headache “If you don’t want to help, and you insist on bothering me, you might as well leave my office.”
“No. First off…” Phoenix lifts one finger, “this is a genuine suggestion because I really do wanna go on vacation with you. Secondly…” He lifts a second finger, “I really want you to take care of yourself, and right now it means that I have to do everything in my power to make you go to sleep. And lastly…” His hands were both back on the desk as he bent slightly over it, his eyes locking onto Miles’, “You work too much, it worries me. Please, I beg you…”

At this point, Edgeworth’s heart didn’t want to resist any longer. He had to admit that he really was tired, and seeing Phoenix this concerned made him want to just go back to either of their places and cuddle up to him in bed. But his head, even though it was hurting, was making him reply “Then you might as well get on your knees to beg.”

Realizing what he had just said, Edgeworth closed his eyes and tried to find the words to apologize, when his chair was pulled to the right and suddenly spun 90° degrees. Surprised, his eyes widened to the sight of Phoenix, who had turned his chair and was now staring down at his boyfriend before quickly falling down on his knees.

“Darling” the defense attorney whispered softly, carefully grabbing Miles’ hand. He kissed the back of it, before putting his head onto Miles’ lap and placing the hand on his hair, all while keeping eye contact. “Darling”, Phoenix repeated, his hands now on the sides of Miles’ thighs. “Please, let’s go home for today and then go on a beautiful, relaxing vacation... Please?”

Edgeworth, who was kind of enamoured by the sight of him, unexpectedly started to relax and a small smile formed on his face. He started stroking Phoenix’s head, slowly nodding. “Maybe you’re right.”
Phoenix was smiling too, and both of them silently decided that they shouldn’t immediately move after finally being on the same page. Especially Miles, who was now finally feeling the lack of sleep in his whole body and was suspecting that Phoenix had to help him get home unless he wanted him to fall.
They stayed like that for a bit, just enjoying each other’s presence and touch, but Miles knew he had to apologize for… quite frankly, his behavior all day. He was quite rude due to his tiredness, and the last comment really was awful, even if Phoenix complied without a single word.
“Look, I’m-”
But Miles was interrupted by his office door suddenly being slammed open.

“Mr. Edgeworth! They told me you’ve been here since you told me to update the autopsy yesterday! Sir! You have to take a brea- huh?”
In the middle of the room, there was now Detective Gumshoe, whose eyes were wide open. Meanwhile, both Phoenix and Miles hadn’t moved at all. Only their eyes looked back at Gumshoe, with the same amount of surprise and slight shock.
Behind the detective, one could hear gasps and whispers of people who happened to walk past the former demon prosecutor’s office. To them, they didn’t see a couple sharing a moment.
To them, they were two rivals perhaps getting engaged in some sort of… action.

“Ah, Detective Gumshoe!” Miles finally spoke up, “Did you get the updated autopsy report I asked for?”
The detective nodded and placed it onto the desk while still having his eyes on Phoenix, who smiled and slowly got up. That shook Gumshoe awake, as he immediately continued his lecture “But Sir! Shouldn’t you think of getting some sleep instead of-”
“You don’t worry, Detective. My boyfriend here already convinced me to leave for today”, Edgeworth interrupted, carefully grabbing Phoenix’s hand to stop him from his current plan of hiding from the slowly forming crowd in front of the office. They had talked about revealing their relationship to their workplaces, but up until now, only Maya and Franziska knew due to their status as “Family”. And quite frankly, Miles really didn’t want any more rumors about the two of them circling around, and in this state he only wanted to go home and cuddle with Phoenix, so he really didn’t care who in the office knew about his relationship.
Well, except for Gumshoe. He felt like Gumshoe needed to know too, for some reason he couldn’t quite understand.

“Actually, he convinced me to go on a vacation for the summer”, Miles continued, ignoring how the whispers outside his office had gotten louder and smiled at Gumshoe. “Therefore, Detective, I would like you to cooperate with the prosecutor who will be taking over my case. I trust you know which files in this office are related to this case?”

Gumshoe looked at Edgeworth, before a smile appeared on his face and he saluted.
“You got it, boss!”
And with that, Miles looked back at Phoenix, stroking the back of his hand with his thumb, and quietly asked “Let’s go?”
Phoenix immediately smiled back and nodded, so Miles got up from his chair, when suddenly he saw a bunch of colors in his sight and stumbled slightly.
But he immediately felt two arms around him, catching him before his body could even start falling, and he heard a sigh right next to his ear.

“I swear, the next autopsy report I’m gonna hold in my hands is yours, Miles Edgeworth…”
Miles couldn’t stop smiling as his sight returned to normal and he could see Phoenix’s worried face. He couldn’t resist, knowing how much Phoenix loved Miles, so Miles pressed a short kiss on his partner’s lips.

“Thanks for catching me, Love. Let’s go home now, Phoenix.”

Notes:

I was listening to the song "Beggin on my knees" by GOT7 and then I thought "What if i put Phoenix into a situation where he begs on his knees?"
Why? I dont know.

It's been a while since I thought of this fanfic, so I'm really glad I've finally found the time (ignoring how i havent slept all night to write this) and mind to write it.
(I still have two more ideas written down btw, having time and a big imagination as well as a love to put gay people into LOVELY situations sometimes feels like a curse)

ANYWAYS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING and in case you want more fanfics by me, I've got a few... others... cough self promotion because why not cough
