Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Fire. Fire was everywhere. It burned him, searing his insides like an inextinguishable flame. His throat felt as if it would tear from the violent coughing. The fire ripped through his organs like paper, yet he found he didn't mind it much—especially since he was by his side, holding him tightly as they both waited for death to claim them.

Strands of red hair sprawled lazily across the pillow, a soft smile etched on his face as he gazed at Alberu as if he were the most important being in the entire world. That man should have looked in a mirror to see the true image of a deity, a specimen so perfect, all for himself. Finally, his.

He felt himself longing for the handsome man's warm embrace more than the cold ones Alberu had received in the past.

It was all his fault; it was always Alberu’s fault. Yet, that annoying but adorable man stayed by his side, always there. He realized he didn't deserve this; the man didn't deserve to be trapped with someone as foolish and selfish as himself. Yet, from lifetime to lifetime, he continued to stand by him, never leaving.

Alberu promised he would fix everything. But that would be for later. For now, they lay entwined. The poison was beginning to take effect; if not for the burning sensation he felt, he wouldn't have known. But it would take time; the redhead possessed a terrifyingly high immunity to poison.

It didn't matter. What mattered was that, for once, they would die together and happily.

And then, everything went dark.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

A blurry light crept into his vision. Every second, his eyes blinked until finally, everything became clear.

He was lying down. Staring at the sun, whose rays touched his skin like a warm blanket. Shading his eyes from the stinging light, he slowly sat up.

He blinked, and then blinked again.

The scent of earthy green, dust, and flowers hit his sharp nose as he surveyed his surroundings. He was in a green meadow; flowers covered every patch of ground like an ocean. The scenery was beautiful and felt familiar—very familiar. He leaned his back against the tree behind him, which he had only just noticed. The color of the leaves helped hide his eyes from the light.

It was as if he had been here many times before. Yet he couldn't remember when or why he was there.

Suddenly, a soft voice long forgotten for years called out to him. The voice shouted his name, but Alberu was unable to answer due to his confusion.

Wait... Why... Why was he surprised again?

He glanced toward the source of the voice and saw a familiar figure with fiery red hair that shimmered and reflected the sunlight like a beacon. His husband stood there, balancing a wicker basket filled with various picnic snacks.

Who?

Ah yes, his beloved husband!

“I finally found you! I’ve been looking for you everywhere!” he exclaimed, a sense of relief washing over the red-haired man like a gentle wave. He approached Alberu, who was comfortably reclining on the soft, inviting grass. The sun filtered through the lush leaves above, creating dancing shadows around them, while a warm breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming flowers through the air.

The red-haired man busied himself, skillfully spreading out a brightly colored picnic mat adorned with cheerful, vibrant patterns that seemed to shimmer under the sun. Before them lay a spread of delicious treats—sandwiches neatly wrapped in crisp parchment paper, their savory aroma wafting tantalizingly, fresh fruits glistening like gems in the light, and a transparent glass pitcher sparkling with cold lemonade, but most importantly, cookies—lots of them.

“We’re having a picnic?” Alberu asked, his eyebrows arching in surprise, momentarily distracted from the array of mouth-watering food before him.

“Of course! We agreed to a picnic after being stuck in the office for what felt like forever. Besides, it was your idea. Or have you already forgotten?” the redhead teased, his tone light and playful, though a hint of concern lingered behind his words as he observed Alberu’s tendency to lose track of time.

A flush of embarrassment colored Alberu’s cheeks; it felt awkward to admit he had forgotten their plans. “Ah, I remember! My mind was just a bit fuzzy after that long nap, that’s all,” he said with a shy smile.

“Exactly! It’s very unlike you to just go somewhere without checking your surroundings thoroughly at least ten times,” the man remarked, tilting his head with an expression of innocent confusion, reminiscent of an adorable puppy.

“Ah, I suppose the demands of work are finally starting to take their toll,” Alberu admitted, offering a nervous smile that didn't quite reach his eyes, a flicker of worry visible there.

“Hmmm, and that’s exactly why you should listen to my advice and get more rest,” the red-haired man said, his voice a blend of concern and playful arrogance, as if he were both worried and amused by Alberu’s habit of overexerting himself.

“Yes, yes, I’ll take your advice... eventually.” Alberu chuckled softly, his cheerfulness infectious, prompting his husband to join in the laughter, their mirth blending gracefully into the peaceful afternoon.

They enjoyed each other’s company, their conversation flowing seamlessly, until fatigue began to creep in. Alberu tried to fight the heaviness in his eyelids, but finally, a long yawn escaped his lips like a soft sigh.

“Ah, I’m so tired. I think I’ll just fall asleep,” he murmured, a sleepy smile etched on his face, illuminating his features.

“So soon? But you just woke up!” the red-haired man exclaimed, his playful tone filled with warmth and affection. With a gentle touch, he guided Alberu’s head to rest on his lap, his comforting weight serving as a support. His fingers began to move gently in circles along Alberu’s jawline, the touch soothing and deeply familiar.

Alberu smiled, feeling the irresistible pull of sleep wash over him as he stammered out his next words, his eyelids growing heavier. "It can't be helped..."

“Alright, you can rest now,” the red-haired man whispered softly, his voice enveloping Alberu in warmth as he continued to stroke his cheek attentively.

And then, he returned to the embrace of a calm void.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

He walked silently into the room; the smell of blood still clung to the space like a parasite. His eyes scanned the cold, dark room. The place was dusty and dirty. He had preserved it, leaving it exactly as it was before he left. He hadn't cleaned anything. Not even the blood on the floor.

He didn't care.

Not anymore.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

They found themselves perched on the edge of a jagged cliff, the wind ruffling their hair as they gazed down at the surging sea crashing against the rocks below. The waves struck with a ferocity that seemed almost alive, hitting the stone like a savage sledgehammer. Alberu’s legs swung gently, creating a rhythmic dance as he lost himself in the breathtaking panorama stretched before him. The combination of the endless horizon and the deep blue of the ocean was mesmerizing.

"Al?"

A soft, familiar voice broke his reverie, and he turned to see the red-haired man walking toward him, every step deliberate and measured.

"Why are you out here alone, Al?"

The red-haired man sat on the ground beside him, leaning in slightly, his anxiety palpable. With a satisfied smile, Alberu’s gaze shifted back to the stunning view.

"The view is beautiful," he replied shortly, his voice nearly inaudible as the salty wind carried his words away.

The man beside him looked at him with a complex mix of emotions before letting out a long sigh.

"It’s not good to linger here, Al." His tone was calm, yet shrouded in a worry and frustration that made Alberu’s heart throb with unease.

"Yes, yes, I can take care of myself, you know? So stop nagging—"

"No, you can't! If you could, you wouldn't be here in the first place!" That sudden outburst of emotion startled Alberu; the passion in the red-haired man’s voice echoed sharply amidst the crashing waves. It was so uncharacteristic of Alberu that he felt a gripping sense of discomfort in his stomach.

"Did I do something wrong?" he asked, his voice sounding anxious.

"Everything is wrong! You shouldn't be here!" The words burst out, harsh and uncontrolled. The intensity of his anger confused Alberu; he didn't understand what had triggered such a reaction.

"I’m sorry, but I don't understand," he replied, his heart pounding with an unshakeable fear of losing the presence of the red-haired individual. "You can tell me what I’ve done, and I’ll try to fix it."

For a moment, the tension in the air was thick, and then the red-haired man’s fierce expression softened like ice melting under the sun. A heavy sigh escaped his lips, full of resignation.

"Forget it..."

The cold, gripping sensation lingered for a moment longer before fading into the sound of distant waves, leaving behind a silence filled with uncertainty.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

"Young Master Henituse, will you marry me?" Alberu’s voice trembled as he knelt before the rebellious red-haired youth, the weight of the arranged marriage heavy upon him. The luxurious room seemed to narrow around them, its grandeur a cruel contrast to the emptiness that would define their union.

The red-haired man’s gaze met his, a mask of indifference hiding every hint of emotion. "Sure, do whatever you want," he replied, his voice as cold as the stone floor beneath Alberu’s knees.

With a heavy heart, Alberu slid the delicate ring onto the red-haired man's finger, the metal shimmering like a promise of sorrow. He brought the hand to his lips; the kiss was but a whispered gesture, an empty ritual in a loveless union.

Alberu forced a smile, a futile attempt to warm the chill. But the red-haired man's expression remained emotionless, offering no solace, not a single sign of joy or sadness. It was as if he had already given up, resigned to a fate neither of them had chosen.

As the ring settled on the red-haired man's finger, Alberu felt a flicker of despair. This was the beginning of a marriage that would be a prison, a bond forged from duty and responsibility, not love. And in that moment, he wondered if they would ever find freedom from the chains that bound them.

Thus began the engagement between the disfavored prince and the so-called trash of society—a pairing that sparked whispers and raised eyebrows throughout the kingdom, a scandal waiting to unfold.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

Pitch black. A dense darkness enveloped everything, the kind of darkness that clung to the skin and stifled the senses.

Ah, yes. Night had fallen, shrouding everything in a veil of shadows, as if the universe had turned away in disgust.

Yet amidst the darkness, a bone-chilling cold filled the air, creeping up his spine like icy fingers. Why was it so cold?

Of course, he realized, the cold was gnawing at him because he was truly alone, abandoned in the haunting silence of the night.

Alberu closed his eyes tight, trying to fight the feeling of unease that rose like bile within him.

It’s okay. He had to believe he could find a way to fix this.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

Alberu felt numb; he had fallen into a deep, endless abyss, its walls steep and hard—an inescapable prison. Panic flared just beneath the surface; he desperately needed help. Surely, someone would come if he screamed. “Help! Help!” His voice echoed in the darkness, desperation lacing every plea. He screamed until his voice was hoarse, each call swallowed by a haunting silence that threatened to swallow him alive.

Then, finally, a voice emerged from the gloom, a flicker of hope in the dark void. “Al? Are you there?” As if summoned by his plea, a figure appeared, his red hair glowing like embers in the night. It was his beloved husband, the embodiment of warmth in a world shrouded in cold.

“Yes! I’m here, near the hole!” Alberu cried out, a sense of relief washing over him like a wave. He could feel the soft rustle of grass beneath the figure’s footsteps, an anchor in the midst of his vast silence.

“What are you doing down there?” the red-haired man asked, concern etched into his brow. Alberu felt a familiar guilt welling up inside; he hated admitting how dire his situation was.

“I fell. I wasn't paying attention to the path. Can you help me?” He chuckled weakly, reaching his hand out expectantly, eager to escape the clutches of the unforgiving pit.

However, the red-haired man looked at him with a probing intensity that left Alberu unable to shake his anxiety. “But Al, you don't need my help.” Alberu frowned, confusion mingling with desperation. Wasn't it perfectly clear he needed help?

“I really do! I can't get out on my own—please, pull me up!” Frustration slipped into his tone, mixed with heightened emotions of fear and a hint of shame.

The red-haired man stared at him without blinking. “But Al, you really don't need it.” The words hung heavy between them, as if this statement could somehow change the reality of Alberu’s situation.

Alberu laughed, though the sound was strained and tight. “Alright, so we’re playing games now? While I’m stuck down here? Seriously? Come on, pull me up.” Despite the humor intended in his words, genuine anxiety pulsed beneath them.

“Please, don't leave me here alone.” The red-haired man’s gaze remained fixed, unmoving and sharp.

“But you have a bench beside you, and the hole isn't even that deep; it’s only up to your chin. You can see me clearly from where you are. In fact, you could easily jump out if you wanted to. You are a dark elf, Alberu.”

A sudden realization struck Alberu, as he painfully noticed the wooden bench sitting nearby—a path to freedom he had overlooked in his panic.

Yet, even with this newfound understanding, he felt paralyzed, unable to muster the courage to leap without his husband’s stabilizing presence. "Please, help me..." he pleaded, his frustration softening his voice to a whisper.

Finally, with a reluctant sigh, the red-haired man extended his hand in a gesture of support. Alberu grasped it expectantly, gratitude surging within him as his husband effortlessly pulled him from the pit’s grasp.

“Thank you for helping me,” Alberu said, warmth saturating his voice as he kissed the red-haired man’s forehead gently. However, as he pulled back to look into his husband’s eyes, a profound sadness washed over him. The hollowness in the red-haired man’s expression left him unsettled—no warmth, no cheer—only a blank void that sent shivers down Alberu’s spine.

The red-haired man’s eyes seemed to hold a deep sorrow, an emotion Alberu couldn't comprehend. It was as if he were looking at Alberu with a mix of love and pity, a longing Alberu couldn't understand.

“Let’s go home,” the redhead whispered softly, the night’s chill returning to envelop them. And Alberu could only follow behind, his heart heavy with uncertainty.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

It didn't feel like they were engaged. They were bound by obligation, two strangers navigating the intricate web of a relationship forged on duty rather than affection. He had long been accustomed to solitude, having lived it for years without complaint. Yet, a hidden longing for companionship stirred within him, a feeling he thought he had buried deep. How foolish, he thought, to dwell on the idea of a fulfilling married life. He understood all too well that these were but remnants of childhood fantasies, fueled by memories of how his parents interacted.

Yet, even the most noble souls can be tempted to dream. The reality, he reminded himself, was that the disgraced young master was destined for isolation; happiness seemed like a distant luxury he would never possess. He knew that long before all this began. Trash was something meant to be discarded, not nurtured and given affection. However, perhaps there was a way to salvage a bit of decency in his marriage. At the very least, he could strive to better understand his partner.

He didn't actually expect anything. Perhaps it was his romantic side from childhood surfacing. But at least he wanted a good relationship if he were truly to be married. Maybe there was someone out there who still wanted and loved him as he dreamed. However, that ideal quickly vanished as Alberu began to speak.

"My apologies that you have been dragged into this matter, Young Master, but I wish to propose a deal with you," came Alberu’s smooth and authoritative voice, each word carefully chosen. "And what exactly do you wish to discuss, Your Highness?" he replied, his tone laced with skepticism.

His heart ached as he listened to Alberu’s proposal. A year of marriage, a pretense of happiness, and then freedom. It was a painful reminder that he was merely a tool for an end, a temporary solution to Alberu’s problem. "Let’s be honest; neither of us wants this marriage. We are only fulfilling our obligations for our own reasons. So, how about this? We maintain this marriage for a year, after which we can separate to live our own lives. Furthermore, I would appreciate it if you could act courteously when appearing in public."

A radiant smile graced Alberu’s lips, radiating warmth like a brilliant sun. Yet beneath that cheerful facade lay an unspoken truth: he found the idea of sharing his life with someone of questionable reputation completely distasteful. He couldn't entirely blame Alberu’s decision, even though his heart hurt from the reality of it.

"And what benefit would I gain from this deal, Your Highness?" he asked, crossing his arms defensively.

"I will ensure you have access to all the wine you desire, financial stability, and your rights as an heir. Furthermore, if you wish, I will make sure no one dares interfere with your business," Alberu said, his confidence so palpable it made him laugh out loud.

The offer was truly absurd. They really didn't know each other, and somehow his heart hurt despite knowing this before the discussion even began. "And what makes you think I want all that?" he countered, a cynical and amused smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

It was laughable to see Alberu’s shock, as he clearly hadn't anticipated such a rejection. "Is that not so?" the prince pressed. "Far from it, really. I don't need your wealth or wine when my father, the count, can provide those luxuries in an instant. So let me suggest an alternative."

Deftly, he reached for his wine glass, sipping slowly before setting it down gracefully. "We can maintain this charade until my father officially appoints his heir, which might take a year and a half or more. I have no desire to inherit the title; it’s too burdensome."

Alberu’s expression shifted to one of astonishment. He had assumed the so-called 'trash' young master would be power-hungry like many other nobles, but refusing a coveted title was unexpected, even from those less driven by ambition. What a strange young master.

"Is that your final decision?"

"Indeed, though I will accept your offer to avoid interference; that would certainly be beneficial." And with that, Alberu’s smile turned radiant once more. "Is that all you desire, Young Master?"

The red-haired man’s expression shifted, a cunning grin spreading across his lips, his fox-like eyes glinting with mischief. "Perhaps not. How about we have small weekly meetings? It feels quite lonely just staying in my room. I’d like to at least become acquainted with my partner." The words felt foolish as they left his mouth, yet they were spoken.

"Of course, provided the young master can behave properly, and perhaps refrain from drinking," Alberu added, a thin smile on his face. "You didn't mention that earlier, so no, I will not fulfill that request," the red-haired man replied, savoring the nearly uncontrollable amusement in the prince’s expression.

"Then it is decided; we have an agreement." As they shook hands, a glimmer of hope sparked in his chest. Maybe, just maybe, they could find a way to make this work. Maybe they could learn to understand one another, finding a small sense of companionship in this cold and harsh world.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

Oh, how Alberu would regret that deal. It was too late to back out now; he had fallen head over heels, and there was no turning back.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

On that fateful wedding day, Alberu stood before the mirror, wearing a stunning black suit that fit his frame perfectly. The fabric accentuated his muscles and defined the contours of his broad shoulders.

"Alberu, it's time," his aunt called, and he let out a sigh, steeling himself. This is only for a year, he reminded himself. He would show the world what kind of king he truly was, even while tied to someone so problematic.

Moments later, he found himself at the altar, surrounded by nobles. They displayed a wide range of emotions: some engaged in lively conversation, some shedding tears, and others staring blankly ahead, while a few others savored the misfortune about to befall him.

The atmosphere grew tense as the time came for his spouse to enter.

The crowd held its breath as music filled the room. Alberu mirrored the tension in the air, anxiety gnawing at him as he worried his companion might falter at the last second, perhaps due to being drunk, thereby ruining everything he had meticulously prepared.

However, once again, he felt surprised. The sight that unfolded as his partner entered was breathtaking. Walking slowly, arm-in-arm with his father, the young man moved with a grace that captivated the entire room. There was no sign of intoxication in his demeanor, even with a delicate thin veil softly covering his face. Dressed in a pristine white suit that trailed behind him like a royal gown, he looked like a true bride.

The luxurious fabric molded to his slender figure, accentuating a small waist that drew everyone’s eye, while his gloved hands held a beautiful bouquet of white flowers, a striking contrast to the opulence of his attire. The subtle elegance of the moment struck Alberu profoundly, awakening an unexpected sense of hope amidst a whirlpool of anxiety. His blood-red hair shone brightly under the light.

Alberu stood at the altar, pensive in a daze as his gaze remained fixed on the man before him. The count, with tears welling in his eyes, gently handed his son into Alberu’s embrace. The emotional weight of the moment was heavy in the air, and Alberu was momentarily caught in a state of stupor, unable to fully grasp the significance of the event unfolding.

Then, a whisper broke his reverie. "You can open my veil now, you know," the red-haired man murmured, a teasing tone in his voice that snapped Alberu back to reality.

“Right, of course.” A smile broke across Alberu’s face as he dutifully lifted the delicate veil covering the young master’s face. As the fabric fell away, it was as if lightning had struck him again. The sight before him was breathtaking.

The redhead’s soft laughter echoed in the air, and Alberu felt an involuntary throb in his chest. "Do I look that beautiful, Your Highness?" he whispered playfully, his eyes sparkling with mischief and joy.

Caught off guard and unprepared, Alberu stuttered for a moment, words left unspoken before he finally let out a soft sigh. "Young Master, you are full of surprises."

The red-haired man smiled broadly, a grin spreading across his face, radiating warmth. "Of course I am."

Alberu was truly amazed at how meticulously the man had attended to his appearance. His makeup was applied with skill and passion, enhancing his natural features without appearing overdone. Alberu couldn't tell if it was expertly applied eyeliner or just genetic magic, but the result was mesmerizing. The shimmer on his lips and the soft touch of eyeshadow on his eyelids made it no wonder that many admirers often remarked that a Henituse possessed a beauty that could rival even the most distinguished ladies.

“You are incredible,” Alberu finally breathed, the words carrying genuine admiration. The red-haired man’s soft laughter in response sent a wash of warmth over him, and he realized just how enchanting the man could be when he was calm, his smile soft and welcoming.

“Thank you, Your Highness. You look perfect in that suit, if I may say so myself,” the young master replied, the compliment making Alberu smile with amusement and filled with an unexpected joy.

The moment was interrupted by a polite cough from the priest, drawing Alberu back to the present.

“May we begin the ceremony, Your Highness?” the priest asked with a respectful tone. Alberu nodded, regaining his composure.

“Right, please proceed, Father.”

The ceremony unfolded with grace, vows exchanged as their voices blended and filled the sacred space. As the time approached to place the rings on each other’s fingers, the priest turned his gaze to the red-haired man. “Do you, Alberu Crossman, take ____ Henituse as your lawfully wedded husband?”

“I do,” Alberu replied, his voice remaining calm despite the surge of emotion within him.

“Then, you may kiss the groom.”

With a mix of hesitation and anticipation, Alberu approached the young master Henituse, now united in name and heart as a Crossman. Their lips met. Only a brief, gentle peck, and Alberu breathed a sigh of relief when the red-haired man didn't pull away. It was quick, yet it sent shivers down his spine, a promise of something deeper emerging to the surface.

As they pulled apart, a wave of applause erupted from the crowd, cheers mingling with laughter, reminding Alberu of the significance of the moment.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

It should have been the happiest day, yet he didn't realize that his partner’s efforts were often unappreciated. How selfish he was.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

"What are you making?" Alberu had asked a few days prior, his curiosity piqued.

"Hmm? I’m drawing," the red-haired man answered shortly, showing the sketchbook he held like a precious treasure.

“What exactly are you drawing?” Alberu asked, his eyebrow arched skeptically, suspicion coloring his voice.

The red-haired man met his gaze, a wide grin beaming on his face—a smile that hinted at a delightful little secret. “It’s a secret, of course!” His playful demeanor was infectious, dispelling Alberu’s urge to pry and ruin the little surprise.

“But I’ll definitely show you once I’m done.” A mischievous wink followed, making Alberu chuckle. He went back to his work while the redhead once again focused on his sketch, the atmosphere enveloped in a peaceful calm, a rarity in their usually busy lives.

In that moment of peace, time seemed to stand still, and just for a second, everything felt right.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

He should have been with the red-haired individual now, basking in the bliss following their wedding night. But work had intruded, demanding his attention just when he had hoped to slip away.

Trying to be a faithful husband, Alberu had instructed his staff to inform the red-haired man that he would be in his husband’s room shortly to spend their first night together. Yet here he was, still hunched over piles of papers in his dimly lit office, a heavy guilt weighing on his chest.

An hour had passed since he made those promises, yet he remained rooted in the same spot, wrapped in a sea of documents, his mind filled with regret.

“He’ll be disappointed if you don't show up, Alberu. I strongly suggest you leave your work for now.” His aunt’s voice broke the silence, sharp and urgent.

Alberu looked up, noting the worried expression on her face. She was a woman accustomed to command, yet now she showed a look of mercy mixed with frustration.

“It’s fine. Just tell someone to let him know that the plan is canceled and I’ll see him tomorrow,” Alberu dismissed her concern with a wave of his hand, returning his focus to the never-ending stack of papers.

Tasha stared at him for a moment longer, her gaze sharp, before she let out a resigned sigh and exited his office.

"Everything will be fine," he kept telling himself, the words echoing hollowly in his mind.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

Liar!

Deceit flowed through your veins like a snake, slithering past the truths hidden within your heart.

And you left him there, alone, waiting in the shadows of his hopes.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

Silence enveloped Alberu’s office, thick and stifling. No red-haired troublemaker burst in, no laughter filled the air—only a haunting quiet that clung to him like a shroud.

Truthfully, it was strange. Why did he even pursue this attachment? Mixed feelings swirled in his chest, a dance of guilt and bliss intertwining within him. The guilt stemmed from the fact that for months, the redhead had been the one pouring his heart and soul into the relationship. He gave thoughtful gifts, showed up impulsively at the office, and he was the one who took all the bold steps at the beginning. Alberu, on the other hand, the crown prince of Roan, never even offered a hint of similar effort.

It wasn't fair, for he wasn't wrong for not trying; they had established that this meant nothing to each other since the day they spoke their vows and their deal.

Of course, everyone said it was just a deal, only a stepping stone toward a divorce within a year. However, he was constantly surprised by the level of attention his husband gave to their relationship. Alberu often pondered if the red-haired man was truly in love, only to immediately dismiss the notion. Instead, he reasoned that the man simply wanted to forge some kind of bond before they eventually parted.

It was a nagging thought, one that didn't bring his heart any peace. Yet, as time went on, Alberu found himself craving the attention the redhead showered upon him. Perhaps, when he finally seized his throne, he would find the courage to reciprocate all that affection. Maybe they could try to have a real relationship without the politics cluttering Alberu’s mind. Alberu wanted to try that, even though it went against his promise to never have a romantic relationship in his life. But for now, he felt like an imposter in his own heart, bound by his fears.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

Like a sudden gust of wind, the door swung open recklessly, and Alberu knew exactly who it was even before his eyes met that striking fiery red hair.

“Good morning, young man!” the man exclaimed cheerfully, his hand clutching a cup filled with a hot beverage. His voice was full of brightness, and he wore a wide smile that could light up the darkest of days—a mix of feline-like mischief and unbridled joy that left Alberu feeling anxious. Chaos was surely about to ensue.

“Good morning to you too,” Alberu replied, returning the smile, though it came with some reluctance. They had become quite close these few months; Alberu had unconsciously started to grow fond of this eccentric man over the past few months. It was hard not to.

“And what is that you’re holding?” he asked, feigning indifference, though curiosity simmered beneath the surface as he eyed the cup.

The red-haired man’s smile widened, revealing a grin that made the corners of his differently colored eyes crinkle, casting a crescent moon shape of light across his face. "It’s a drink I made for you! I’ve been experimenting, well, trying to make something delicious from the plants in your garden!"

He set the cup down on Alberu’s cluttered desk, just a hair’s breadth from the organized chaos of stacked documents that had consumed his day.

Ah yes, the garden. The red-haired man had shown an unexpected interest in the barren patch of land behind the palace. A place where Alberu had once shared happy moments with his late mother and the other dark elves, the garden now flourished under the man’s care. Where Alberu had struggled with weeds and wild growth, the red-haired man had breathed life back into the plants, transforming them into a haven of color and vitality.

“Are you sure this isn't poisonous?” Alberu asked, his eyebrows raised teasingly, betraying both concern and curiosity.

“Yes! I even tasted it myself to make sure!” the redhead exclaimed merrily, his eyes sparkling with innocent mischief.

“Please don't do something like that again; you could seriously hurt yourself.”

“Sure, sure! Just try it! I’ve put a lot of effort into this!” The enthusiasm radiating from him was contagious, making it hard for Alberu not to simply give in.

Alberu let out a soft sigh, feigning annoyance, but finally relented to the infectious joy emanating from his husband. "Fine..."

The redhead squealed with delight, a sound so pure it made Alberu smile as he reached for the cup.

The fragrant aroma wafting from the drink enveloped him, familiar and inviting, as he lifted it to his lips. He took a cautious sip, testing the delicate balance of flavors, and was surprised by its complexity.

“It smells amazing…” he murmured, glancing at the expectant redhead, whose eyes were wide with anticipation.

The sip turned into a deeper gulp, and he savored the blend of bitter and sweet that raced across his tongue, the warmth of the cup felt through his fingers.

“It’s… delicious.” The answer escaped his lips before he could fully process it.

“Yes, it’s—” The redhead’s cheeks suddenly flushed red, almost in disbelief. “Wait, delicious?”

“Yes, it’s quite good,” Alberu confirmed, his enjoyment undeniable. The flavors danced on his palate, a pleasant surprise that filled his heart with unexpected warmth.

"What? You’re not supposed to like it! It tastes incredibly bitter," the red-haired man exclaimed, his face contorted in a mix of confusion and disbelief. "I even had to add sugar because I felt bad for you drinking something so rancid."

Alberu raised his eyebrow, a smug smile playing on his lips. "So, you planned to give me this bitter concoction?" A glint of amusement flickered in his eyes as he returned the redhead’s blunder. The redhead’s nervous laughter filled the air, the sound a mixture of regret for his ill-conceived plan.

"Well, I was hoping for it to be a little prank," he admitted, crossing his arms in mock annoyance. "But clearly, it backfired instead."

Alberu took a satisfied sip from his cup, the rich, dark liquid a blend of subtle sweetness and a hint of bitterness. "Honestly, I quite enjoy this. Perhaps just a splash of milk, and it would be perfect," he remarked, savoring the flavor with a satisfied hum.

The redhead looked at him in wonder, his lips pursed in a pout as frustration radiated from his face. "This is so unfair! I don't understand how you can like this disgusting creature."

Alberu chuckled softly, contentedly ignoring the redhead’s complaints as he enjoyed his drink. After a moment, the redhead let out a dramatic sigh, shaking his head before finally giving in.

"I’ll go get the milk. Try not to drink it all while I’m gone, okay?" And with that, he headed toward the kitchen, leaving Alberu to savor his new favorite beverage.

As the days and weeks passed, Alberu soon realized that the dark liquid kept him more awake than tea ever could. He found himself asking the redhead for refills every night, much to the redhead’s chagrin. Despite his sighs and complaints, the redhead grudgingly complied.

However, Alberu knew it wouldn't last. Soon, the redhead would leave, and he would be left with only the memories of their time together. He shouldn't get too attached.

The door creaked open, a heavy sigh echoing through the weighted silence. The soft footsteps that followed seemed to reverberate with the burden of grief, each step a reluctant approach toward a sorrow that had become all too familiar. "Al, it’s time to let go," a gentle voice whispered, the words thick with a sadness so profound it felt like a physical presence in the room. "We can't keep him here forever..."

Alberu’s gaze remained fixed on the unmoving form of his beloved, his fingers tracing the contours of his cold face with a tenderness that was both heartbreaking and desperate. His skin felt cool to the touch, too cool. He had to turn up the heater. "Ten more minutes, please," he breathed, his voice barely a whisper, a plea to the universe to turn back time, to erase the pain that had been inflicted.

The silence that followed was oppressive, a tangible force that weighed down on them all. The woman’s voice wavered as she spoke again, "Al, please... this isn't good for you. Everyone is worried. I’m worried." She reached out, her hand hovering over Al’s shoulder before slowly resting there, a hesitant touch that spoke of her own helplessness.

Alberu didn't respond, his eyes locked on his husband’s face, a face that was even unrecognizable now, his mind a blur of memories of their time together. His hand continued to stroke the cold skin, a gentle, soothing touch that seemed to be the only thing keeping him grounded. Because he failed to hold him before it was too late.

The woman’s grip on his shoulder tightened, her voice cracking with desperation. "Please, Alberu, he wouldn't want to see you like this. He’s gone, Al. It’s time to let him rest." Her words were a plea.

But Alberu remained rooted, his conviction unwavering. "He’ll wake up," he whispered, his voice barely audible, a fragile glimmer of hope that seemed to be the only thing holding him together. "I know he will." As he spoke, a single tear escaped and rolled down his cheek.

Nevertheless, he clung to the hope, however fragile, that his husband would wake up, that they would be together again.

Because he promised to stay. He promised. He couldn't break that promise. Otherwise, it would make him a liar. He wouldn't leave him alone.

He promised.

"What does the sea look like?" Alberu asked casually, his voice raspy with curiosity, as he glanced up from the stacks of papers strewn across his desk. The rich mahogany surface, polished to a shine, reflected the warm light of a nearby flickering lantern. The ever-vibrant red-haired man, who had once again intruded upon his private space, was enthusiastically recounting his recent adventurous journey to the wilderness of the Ubarr territory, his hands moving vividly as if to conjure the very images he spoke of.

The other man stopped abruptly mid-sentence, his eyebrows arching in surprise like sails catching a gust of wind. "Have you never been to the sea before?" he asked, disbelief washing over his face like a wave crashing against the shore. Alberu felt a flush color his cheeks, embarrassment creeping in as he muttered, "No, I haven't. I rarely travel—there’s just too much work for me to do at the palace." His tone held a hint of resignation, the weight of royal duties resting heavily upon his shoulders like a golden cloak.

It was a poignant reality; a prince like him, bound by invisible chains of expectation and responsibility, seldom ventured beyond the castle walls. The red-haired man, brimming with energy and mischief, pursed his lips thoughtfully, his bright eyes twinkling as if already formulating a daring plan.

"Your birthday is next week, right?" he exclaimed, an infectious smile radiating from his face, casting a warmth that seemed to illuminate the dimly lit room.

"How did you know that?" Alberu asked, curiosity lacing his voice, the momentary embarrassment forgotten in the wake of his intrigue.

"Aunt Tasha told me," he replied mischievously, a playful glint of mischief in the redhead’s eyes. Of course, she did—the memory of his aunt bursting into the room and dragging him away from work while the redhead was still inside continued to haunt him. It was the beginning of a chaotic and unexpected duo. Both his aunt and the redhead were often seen together, smiling like lunatics as they plotted to drag Alberu away from his desk, acting as if the man in question couldn't hear them. It was pleasant to know his aunt and the redhead got along; Alberu just worried his work time would be significantly diminished every time they scurried into a corner to plan something.

“Yes, it is,” Alberu admitted, a hint of warmth slipping into his tone amidst the lingering chill of duty.

“Then it’s decided! We’re going to the beach for your birthday! So make sure you clear your schedule, Mr. Prince!” he declared, his eyes shining with excitement as he raced out of the office like a joyous gust of wind, leaving behind a lingering sense of infectious excitement.

"Pfft—adorable brat." Albert snorted to himself, a soft smile playing on his lips, his mind filled with an unexpected sensation of anticipation.

He was in love, he knew it. He had to end this quickly before they fell too deep. Though the thought of parting was starting to hurt. He had to end this before it became even more painful for both of them. His smile disappeared at that thought.

He needed to think about the kingdom, not trivial things like this.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

"Ah, you’re a dark elf..." the man said, his voice ringing with conviction. Alberu felt a wave of embarrassment and fear wash over him, a bit startled by the sudden voice that filled the room. The tone was surprising, like an unexpected jolt of cold water. How was he supposed to handle this situation?

"I-"

"You look better in this form. Much more handsome and cute," the red-haired man continued, his presence radiating warmth and confidence, effectively silencing Alberu.

"...What?"

"You heard me," the red-haired man replied, his tone playful yet sincere.

"I truly don't understand. You don't feel disgusted, aren't you scared?" Alberu’s confusion was palpable in his words.

"No, why should I?" The way the man phrased the question made it seem as if Alberu had just asked the oddest question in the world.

"But I’m a dark elf."

"And? I mean, I might not know much about your kind, but does that really define who you are as a person?"

Alberu was left speechless, the absence of a response hanging in the air. He felt a hint of discomfort, mingled with a strange warmth at the man’s casual acceptance.

"I know how the public view people like you; that much I know, but I don't really care. You are clearly different from the nonsense the public speaks," the red-haired man continued, a firm resolve in his voice. Every compliment was like a small stone dropped into the pool of Alberu’s insecurities, sending ripples of warmth through his body.

"You are much more than just a dark elf. You are kind, smart, cunning, handsome, a gentleman, and the crown prince of the Roan Kingdom." he asserted, listing each quality with precision. Alberu felt heat creeping up his cheeks, finding himself exposed beneath the gaze of his husband’s passionate admiration. Then the man paused, looking at Alberu with an intensity that took his breath away.

"And you are Alberu, my husband. Isn't that enough?"

Oh, how Alberu’s heart soared at the word.

"Yes, of course," he stammered, blinking away the tears he hadn't realized were there, a soft smile gracing his lips. His husband’s intense gaze pierced through his heart, a bittersweet ache that Alberu couldn't shake.

And he wondered, how could he possibly let go of someone so perfect as this. How could he possibly cast aside the warmth this man provided him? He didn't know.

Alberu’s heart swelled with emotion as he looked into his husband’s eyes, the sincerity and admiration radiating from him almost unbearable.

Alberu felt the weight of his regret growing heavier, a longing that seemed to grow with every moment. He knew that eventually they would part ways. And the thought of living without his husband by his side was starting to seem impossible.

But he had to. It was for the sake of both of them.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

"You really don't have to do this," Alberu protested gently.

"I want to, so you won't stop me," he replied firmly.

The hands behind Alberu tightened the blindfold slightly, ensuring it was securely in place without causing discomfort or giving him any chance to peek.

"Don't peek, okay?"

"Yes, yes, lead the way then," he chuckled, allowing some of his nervousness to dissipate as the other man took his hand, guiding him with infectious enthusiasm.

Amidst the gentle tug of the blindfold, Alberu sensed a fluctuation of mana around him, its energy pulsing like a heartbeat before returning to normal, leaving him intrigued and curious about what was unfolding.

"Should I be worried about what exactly you have planned for today?" Alberu asked, a hint of anxiety in his voice.

"No!" The conviction in the red-haired man’s tone sent a shiver down Alberu’s spine, and his curiosity heightened.

After walking for about a minute, the redhead instructed him to take off his shoes. With a mixture of excitement and apprehension, Alberu complied, his feet meeting the soft, cool grass beneath.

"Alright, birthday boy, I’m going to take off your blindfold, and you’ll finally see your surprise."

With that, the darkness vanished, and light returned to his vision.

What stretched before him exceeded his expectations. The beach expanded vastly, its sand meeting the gentle waves, adorned with various beautifully arranged decorations. The scenery was breathtaking.

"Ta-daah! Do you like it? I decorated everything myself!" The red-haired man beamed, his eyes sparkling with pride and joy. Alberu hadn't anticipated the sheer amount of effort his husband had put in—ribbons gracefully adorned the trees, shimmering like gems under the sun, and flowers were neatly placed in the nearby corners, the very same flowers he and his mother loved. Beach mats and lounge chairs were laid out comfortably on the warm sand, but the center of attention that caught his eye was a beautifully crafted cake, grand in its presentation, resting on a table adorned with thoughtfully considered ornaments.

"This is incredible..." Alberu couldn't help but express his wonder.

"Of course! Who do you think prepared this?" the red-haired man replied, his laughter sounding merry.

"It was you, of course," Alberu answered with a soft smile, relishing the joy and appreciation of the moment.

It was always him that tries.

However, despite the warmth that enveloped him, a small voice in his heart whispered a doubt. Alberu wondered if he truly deserved such affection and attention; the redhead, so full of spirit, deserved better than him.

He didn't deserve this, this beauty, this celebration, or the red-haired woman standing beside him, who embodied everything bright and wonderful in his life.

"Well then, what are you waiting for? Let’s celebrate your birthday party!" the other man exclaimed with uncontainable enthusiasm, grabbing Alberu’s hand and leading him toward the beach. The soft sand cushioned Alberu’s feet, grounding him as laughter burst from the man beside him. Alberu could feel the tension melting away, replaced by the undeniable magic of the moment, his heart entwined in the boundless joy radiating from the man who loved him so dearly.

Ah, he loves him, he truly loves that redhead, just as the man love him too.

How long had he been in love? He didn't know himself. How foolish he was.

It was too late to change his so-called plan now. Just enjoy the life he had right now. For soon, everything would come to an end.

And God, he so wanted this moment to never end.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

“There is trouble brewing in the eastern part of the continent,” he had said that day, when he and the redhead were enjoying their afternoon tea in peace. It was a shame to disrupt such serenity, but the matter was too urgent to ignore.

“A coup has formed under the leadership of the late Prince's sons. They have declared open war. Intending to overthrow the Royal Family and start anew.”

He spoke calmly. When he looked at the red-haired man, the other just looked back, thoughtful and composed, as if already weighing the weight of the words.

At first, no one took the rebellion seriously. But as time passed, their influence spread like wildfire—new recruits, new banners, new courage. The King sent a brigade to silence them and restore peace after feeling concerned about the situation. That was before a small group slipped past the palace guards and nearly captured the third prince.

After that, the capital fell into chaos. Fear spread faster than the flames of rebellion.

The King's attention sharpened; this was no longer a mere nuisance. The rebels were parasites—silent, growing, and draining the kingdom’s strength. Their reach had even extended to the southern territories. If things continued this way, Alberu knew, they would soon reach the palace.

The nobles in the east remained silent, their fear greater than their loyalty, while the commoners clung to whatever hope they could find. Alberu could only pray their faith in the crown remained steadfast.

He could see what the King planned: in another month, His Majesty would lead the troops himself. And Alberu, as Crown Prince, would follow him.

Which meant leaving the person he loved most.

His husband would be in danger if he remained here.

It was almost time for the Prince to announce his heir. His second son had reached adulthood, ready to take his place among the nobility. That meant their deal was nearly fulfilled. They would separate soon.

They would be divorced.

The thought pierced Alberu’s heart like a knife, but he knew it was time. The red-haired man would be safer in his own territory, far from the chaos of the capital, protected by family and guards Alberu could no longer provide.

He had to do this.

“Then why bring up this topic all of a sudden?” the red-haired man asked quietly, setting his cup down.

“Our agreement is almost up,” Alberu began, his voice low. “But it’s getting dangerous here. I want to settle everything sooner, so you can return home safely, before the rebels reach the capital.”

The red-haired man’s eyes softened, but his words remained calm and firm. “We agreed to separate only after my father appointed his heir. You can't change that now.”

“It will be too late then,” Alberu replied, shaking his head. “They will be at the gates soon. They could target you.”

A flicker of bitterness showed in the red-haired man’s eyes. "Are you really that eager to get rid of me, Your Highness?"

“What? No! I’m trying to protect you.”

“Then why is it your decision on how to protect me?” His voice sharpened, breaking through Alberu’s composure.

“Because I’ve seen them,” Alberu said, his tone trembling with concern. “I know what they’re capable of. When the King leaves, they will come for the palace.”

The red-haired man let out a hollow laugh. “I’ve dealt with assassins before. I think I’ll manage.”

The words hurt more than they should have. Had Alberu failed so much that the other man had stopped believing in his protection?

“You don't understand, you can't stay—”

“Then why not? Why is it your choice?”

“Because I don't want to lose you!”

The shout escaped before Alberu could stop it. Silence fell, and for a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then, guilt washed over him like a tide. "I’m sorry…" he murmured. "I shouldn't have raised my voice."

A hand reached out, warm and gentle, resting on top of his clenched fist. The red-haired man’s touch was steady, grounding him. Alberu looked up, meeting a gaze filled with quiet understanding.

“I’ll stay,” the redhead said softly. “No matter what you say. I’ll wait here for you until it’s over.”

Alberu opened his mouth to argue, but the other man pressed a finger to his lips.

“No buts,” he whispered. “I’ll stay here, and I’ll be safe. I promise.”

They remained like that for a long time. Two stubborn souls bound by love, fear, and the ache of knowing they would soon be apart. Alberu sighed, finally giving in.

“I’ll be fine,” the redhead added, a small smile playing on his lips. “I have you, don't I?”

“Pinky promise again?” Alberu asked, trying to hide the tremor in his voice.

The red-haired man grinned and held out his pinky. “I promise to stay here until you come back. I’ll take care of myself, and I’ll be here when you return.”

Their pinkies intertwined, sealing the promise with a quiet warmth.

“Do you promise?” Alberu asked softly.

“Of course,” the redhead said, his eyes sparkling. “I’ll even watch over the capital for you. You can count on me.”

Alberu frowned gently. “Don't talk like you’re just… useful. You’re much more than that.”

The red-haired man offered a small smile as he rolled his eyes. "Perhaps. But I still want to help."

“Please…,” Alberu whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “Take good care of yourself.”

“If you ask so nicely,” the other teased, “how could I possibly refuse?”

Alberu only smiled faintly. Oh, how he loved this ridiculous man.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

“Al?”

He turned at the familiar voice. The redhead stood behind him, sunlight filtering through the willow tree's leaves.

“So, this is where you’ve been hiding,” the other teased, sitting down beside him. “It’s rare to see you away from your desk.”

“I’m just doing what you and Aunt kept insisting I do—resting,” Alberu replied, met with a small chuckle.

They sat together under the tree, watching the gentle breeze brush through the garden. Then, without warning, the redhead began plucking the flowers he had tended to himself.

“Why are you picking those?” Alberu asked, half-amused, half-concerned.

“I’m making a flower crown,” the redhead said simply, his hands moving with grace. As the man wove the blossoms, a crown slowly began to take shape.

Alberu watched in admiration. "You make it look easy."

“Want to try?”

He hesitated, then nodded. In three days, he would be leaving for the eastern territories. He might not see this man again for a long time. Perhaps never. So he tried.

But the stem snapped in his hand. "I failed," he said flatly, a frown deepening.

A small laugh escaped the redhead’s mouth. "No, you’re just too adorable when you try too hard."

Alberu blushed, and the red-haired man grinned, reaching over. “Here. Hold it more gently. Like this.”

Their hands moved together, patient and slow, the petals brushing against fingers. The air between them grew still, filled with something fragile yet firm.

When they finished, the crown was uneven, imperfect—but beautiful.

“It’s perfect,” the redhead said, smiling. “Because you made it.”

For the first time that day, Alberu smiled properly.

“Maybe we’ll make more when I return.”

The redhead nodded, his eyes bright. "And picnics, too."

“It’s a promise then,” Alberu said.

“Pinky promise again?”

“Always,” Alberu whispered.

Because if love could be woven like flowers—delicate, fragile, and enduring—then this, between them, was his most precious crown.

✧・゚: ✧・゚:

It was time for Alberu to depart for the east, where a coup had been actively gathering support for a rebellion against the Royal Family. The people of that area were paralyzed by fear, reluctant to interfere in the chaos.

Alberu would be leaving alongside his father and his other half-siblings, but unfortunately not the second prince. This journey wasn't just a duty; it was also a chance to gain support and enhance their prospects for ascending to the throne.

As preparations were underway, everyone was occupied with ensuring their belongings were packed and nothing vital was left behind. The palace staff moved with purpose, each attending to their own tasks. Amidst the flurry of activity, Alberu focused entirely on preparing his belongings, while the dark elves quietly made ready for his departure.

As he meticulously checked through each item he would need, a flash of striking bright red hair caught his eye.

"I’ve come to see you one last time," the man said softly as he entered the room.

A warm smile spread across Alberu’s face, and he politely signaled for everyone to leave for a moment, wanting to give his husband his undivided attention. The man gently placed his hand on Alberu’s shoulder, smoothing out a slight crease in his suit with a tender touch.

"I truly appreciate this," Alberu replied, smiling as he took the man’s hand in his own. He brought the skin as white as snow to his lips, kissing it gently before lowering it, as if reluctant to let go. The man gently stroked Alberu’s hand with his thumb, a comforting gesture that filled the room with warmth.

"I’m going to miss you quite a bit, you know. How long will you be away?"

"As long as those rebel groups remain a threat," Alberu answered, his tone serious but with a hint of vulnerability.

"You aren't traveling by carriage, are you?" The red-haired man’s voice sounded worried, as if he didn't already know the answer.

"Of course not; it’s far too risky. We’ll be teleporting there discreetly."

The red-haired man nodded, a relieved smile breaking through his concerned expression.

"That’s good."

For a moment, the room was enveloped in a comfortable silence, both savoring the time remaining together, both bittersweet.

Finally, the moment arrived when Tasha’s voice echoed through the hall, signaling it was time to say goodbye.

With a heavy sigh, Alberu finally released the soft hands he cherished so much.

Just as he was about to step out, he felt a gentle tug on his tie, pulling him back. Before he could fully process what was happening, the red-haired man pressed a soft, warm kiss onto his cheek. Suddenly, Alberu felt his cheeks flush red, as if all the warmth in his body surged to the surface, accompanied by butterflies in his stomach and a rapid heartbeat that felt completely overwhelming.

The occurrence was as quick as its end as the redhead pulled away from him.

"I’ll wait here, guarding the kingdom for you," the red-haired man said, his smile gentle and reassuring as he cupped Alberu’s cheek for a moment before gently leading him out of his own room, leaving Alberu in a daze. Before he could ask, the door was swiftly closed behind him.

For a moment, Alberu stood still in front of the door, lost in thought, until his aunt’s voice broke the silence and brought him back to reality.

"What happened in there? Your face looks incredibly red," she remarked, concern etched on her face as they walked toward the teleportation hall.

Alberu gave a small chuckle, his face still warm, a wide smile spreading across his face that he couldn't contain. "It’s nothing for Auntie to worry about," he replied, though his tone only deepened her curiosity. Nevertheless, she chose to believe him, feeling a sense of relief seeing her nephew so happy.

⋇⋆✦⋆⋇

Alberu stood before the masterpiece his beloved had been working on for quite some time.

A painting. It was as if captured by an eye. Alberu even pondered if it were an illusion, for there was no way he looked as beautiful as the figure in the painting.

"Is that... me?" he said, as if in disbelief at what he saw.

"Yes, it is indeed supposed to be you at the beach, I painted it so you would always remember what the sea looks like even when you are busy and recall all the wonderful memories created there," he said with the face he usually made when he was proud of something he had done. He found himself staring wide-eyed at the redhead and the painting.

"Do you like it?" He didn't even have the words to describe how adorable yet bittersweet this was. All this effort, yet Alberu couldn't even prepare anything for him. Alberu had even missed his birthday. What kind of husband was he?

He received all the treatment and adoration from the man as if he deserved it, when Alberu didn't deserve a single shred of attention from the red-haired man. For he was so considerate. How could he remember all of this and still not feel like giving up when Alberu had never given anything in return? It was disgusting.

In the end, he couldn't find the words to describe how much he loved him yet felt undeserving of this, for the gift was supposed to be for Alberu. At the very least, he could do was accept the gift and thank him like a greedy and ungrateful person.

"It is incredible, I love it. You must have worked hard to create it." He smiled, he gave his most genuine smile, for that was what the red-haired man deserved most from him. Something genuine. Something from the heart, at least.

"Thank you, Your Highness, I worked day and night to fulfill Your Highness’s birthday gift, as Your Highness might have seen, it is wonderful that Your Highness acknowledges my efforts," the red-haired man said in a haughty voice. It was meant to be a small joke, yet Alberu felt his heart ache even more at the implication.

He laughed nonetheless.

"It is beautiful, I’m impressed," he told the red-haired man. The other man seemed to feel proud of the compliment, his cheeks flushing a bit. He truly deserved to be proud because the gift he gave was amazing.

Alberu didn't understand how someone would sacrifice their time to give a gift to someone else who wouldn't return the same level of attention as had been given. And Alberu was clearly the ungrateful bastard in the story.

"But that wasn't all I wanted to discuss with you."

Alberu looked at the thinner and shorter man with curiosity. He had never truly noticed how different their height and structure were, for they usually sat in chairs, or perhaps Alberu was too distracted by other things that he hadn't even noticed his husband’s features all this time until now.

His thoughts returned to the moment when the redhead spoke again.

"Since our anniversary is coming up soon, I wanted to make you something special, but I was a bit-"

"What anniversary exactly, if you don't mind me asking?" Alberu asked, confusion visible on his face.

The red-haired man who was interrupted went silent for a moment at Alberu’s words. He stared at Alberu for a few moments, leaving the prince a bit uneasy before offering him a gentle smile. But the smile on the red-haired man’s face didn't reach his wine-brown eyes. The other man chuckled at the fake blonde before speaking again.

"You must be really busy, huh? Our wedding anniversary, you stupid prince." The redhead teased. Though the other was not amused at all.

He was horrified. How could he possibly forget? And he openly asked the other like an idiot bastard. He had shown the other how much he actually didn't care, hadn't he?

Alberu swallowed as he tried to find words to answer. But no words came out, as if his brain was clogged with deep guilt and a pounding heart.

Foolish him. At the very least he could try to remember their union, yet he forgot. What else would he forget now? The face of the other?

What a joke.

"Hey, it’s fine. I’m not mad if you’re worried about that, I don't really care either."

'I do,' he thought to himself. 'How could you not be mad?'

How could the redhead feel anything but disappointment and hatred every time he failed the redhead and left him to settle things on his own?

"I—" His words were cut off as a warm feeling touched the side of his face. Two palms cupped his face as if it were something precious. They stroked him gently, and Alberu felt himself melting at the gentle touch. He looked at the owner of the warm and comforting hands, who was of course his husband. He found himself liking being held like this.

"Don't look at me like that, I’m not mad. I don't need pity, and I don't need you to feel like you owe me." Alberu found himself disagreeing with what the red-haired man said. But just as he was about to answer, the hands on his cheeks squeezed his face as if to warn him.

"I did this on my own accord, I don't expect anything from you that you might not be able to fulfill. So, please, don't look at me like that and feel guilty."

Alberu stared into the eyes of the red-haired man holding him with determination and love. And he couldn't bring himself to argue with the man as he let out a sigh.

"Sure," he said. After that, the other man smiled and finally pulled away, leaving Alberu craving for more warm touches of those hands.

"Well, where was I?" he murmured to himself before his eyes shone like the brightest stars Alberu had ever seen.

"Ah, right! I was asking if you wanted something special for your gift?" He asked as if Alberu deserved it.

"I don't think I want anything in particular," he said with a gentle smile. But his smile disappeared as he saw the somber expression on the other’s face.

"You are still thinking about it."

"I’m not, really," he countered. Because it was the truth. Alberu owed nothing to the other. For he was a bastard disguised as a friendly political royal.

The redhead just stared at him for a few moments before letting out a sigh.

"Can't you at least think of something, please, this is as a memory before we inevitably part ways."

Oh, right. Their deal. It was almost time. Alberu tried not to show the pain he felt when thinking that all of this would end after the deal was finally fulfilled. Everything would go back to normal as if it had never happened.

But he did want it. Just to remind himself to work harder and better, so that perhaps in the future he would deserve such treatment from the people he cared about. Perhaps in the future, he finally deserved to receive all the affection from the redhead.

He looked at the painting; it was incredible. Alberu couldn't believe it was him in the painting. He looked elegant and angelic, when in reality he was far from pure. Handsome he was, but he was far from looking like an angel. Was that how the other saw him as well?

But, perhaps, it would be better if the redhead played a part in it.

"A self-portrait," he answered.

"Huh, a self-portrait?"

"Yes, if you don't mind, I would like you to try to paint yourself, is that too much of a bother?" he asked with hesitation. But when he looked at the other, he felt it was worth it.

"My, you’re really trying to make me embarrassed, aren't you? Well, I do love a challenge. Consider it done, sir."

His face beamed with a bright smile, a dazzling display of joy that seemed to light up the air around him. Alberu’s eyes widened as he took in the breathtaking sight before him, his heart skip a beat as their gazes met. The red-haired man’s skin glowed with a celestial radiance, as if the heavens themselves had descended to bless their union. His eyes sparkled like diamonds, shining with an unbridled enthusiasm that was impossible to resist.

As he spoke, his voice was like music, a melodic harmony that wrapped itself around Alberu’s heart and squeezed tight. "What does this mean?" he asked, his pinky finger extended in a gesture that was both playful and profound. The red-haired man’s response was a laugh like a symphony of angels, a joyous sound that filled Alberu’s chest with warmth and happiness.

"It is a gesture of promise," the red-haired man explained, his eyes shining with love and admiration. "In this moment, I swear on my pinky to complete my gift before our anniversary and present it to you with all my care and love." Alberu’s heart swelled with emotion as he looked into the red-haired man’s eyes, his own eyes welling with tears that had not yet fallen.

He couldn't help but smile, a soft and affectionate grin that spoke of the depth of his feelings for this incredible being. Without a word, he extended his pinky finger, and the red-haired man wrapped his smaller one around it, sealing their promise. "Do you swear?" Alberu asked, his voice thick with emotion.

The red-haired man’s response was immediate and without hesitation. "I swear," he said, his voice ringing with conviction. And Alberu believed him.

At the moment, the East was indeed in a state of chaos. Citizens lived in fear, hesitant to interact with one another, yet they continued to work diligently to provide for their families. It was a heartbreaking situation. Fires had broken out in various locations caused by the rebels, and Alberu frequently rushed to assess the situation, taking on his dark elf form to blend into the shadows and avoid attention.

His heart ached at the thought that this unrest could eventually reach the capital where his beloved husband resided.

It had been three long months since Alberu first arrived in the eastern territories. He received daily updates from his beloved husband about the happenings in the capital, each message accompanied by a neatly organized report on the various territories, along with a warm and caring private letter. Recently, however, those reports had been arriving later than usual, and it worried him.

He read each letter thoroughly, absorbing every detail conveyed. When finished, he found himself staring at them, feeling a mix of gratitude and sadness, before finally gathering the courage and opening them. He smiled at every letter. But for today’s letter, he would set it aside for a while, for he had work to finish.

As Alberu strolled through a village that seemed yet untouched by the chaos, he inhaled the bustling life surrounding him. The streets were filled with villagers selling goods and trading, giving him a sense of comfort and safety in his true form.

It felt ironic to him: the form he had to hide from the world became his shield, while his appearance as a blond with clear blue eyes drew unwanted attention. Despite his relative safety, he understood the importance of vigilance. He had trained the dark elves to watch over him discreetly, ready to protect him should danger approach.

His purpose today, however, transcended mere security. He had heard rumors of activity resembling a coup in the area and felt a deep responsibility to investigate and stop it before it spread and disrupted the village’s peace.

Fortunately, the place remained remote enough, which was likely why the king chose to stay here.

As he continued his journey, he passed by villagers trying to sell their produce, each offering a glimpse into their lives and hopes. Sadly, due to its remoteness, foreign visitors rarely came to collaborate or buy their crafts. Making a silent promise to himself, Alberu determined to improve the lives of the villagers once the chaos subsided, after he reunited with his beloved partner.

Thoughts of his husband made his ears perk up at the shout of a merchant selling handmade trinkets. He glanced back at the stall, intrigued by the mention of items crafted from the sea.

“Come, come, look at all the trinkets made from the treasures of the sea, all crafted with love,” the woman running the stall called out.

Alberu found himself mesmerized for a moment, recalling the nearby beach that served as the village’s livelihood.

“Are you interested in trying our products?” The woman’s voice broke his reverie, making him acutely aware of his prolonged stare.

“Ah, not really, but thank you for your kind offer,” he replied softly.

The woman frowned, letting out a soft sigh. “Is there no special someone you wish to give a gift to? You look like a tourist who might want to bring back a souvenir from our village.”

As he prepared to decline again, a wave of guilt washed over him. Their anniversary was only two days away, and he was suddenly reminded of the gift his husband had promised. He bit his lip, feeling a deep sense of regret.

There was still time, he assured himself.

He scanned the trinkets, memories of the sweet moments spent by the sea with his husband filling his mind. That birthday surprise they shared together was especially significant; it was the first time in years he had truly celebrated his birthday.

His eyes landed on a beautiful bracelet made of shells and shimmering stones, crafted with care.

“Ah, you have a keen eye for beauty,” the woman at the stall remarked warmly.

“Ah, well, not really,” he chuckled softly, looking into her eyes. “Um, how much for this, Ma'am?”

“Only two copper coins. May I ask who you are giving this lovely gift to?”

Alberu hesitated, a wave of affection for his partner washing over him. “It’s for my partner. Our anniversary is coming up, and I…” He trailed off.

Alberu let out a sigh, "I haven't prepared anything for them yet."

The old woman gave a kind nod before looking into his eyes.

"My, you’re quite young to be married already, and so handsome too! Your partner must be very lucky," she said with a gentle smile. Alberu chuckled softly, wishing she knew that he was actually the lucky one to have the redhead by his side.

"Now, you wouldn't mind if this old lady gave her opinion, would you? Perhaps my experience can help with your situation."

Alberu returned her smile, feeling seen and appreciated in the best way. He was reminded once again that his efforts felt small compared to the gift the redhead had given.

"Of course, I’m in desperate need of help."

The woman’s smile widened, and she continued, “Is this your first anniversary together?”

"Yes..."

"Well then, a bracelet alone won't suffice! How about something more luxurious, like jewelry?"

Alberu let out a sigh, a sense of doubt creeping in. "I’m not sure if he would appreciate jewelry as a gift from me."

It felt so unfair; for him to offer something that seemed effortless to the redhead, while the other had poured his heart and soul into the painting Alberu had requested. He wanted to give a gift that truly held meaning, something that reflected the redhead’s values. For he understood the importance of effort, and Alberu wanted to show it in a meaningful way.

The woman thought for a moment before continuing.

"Well then, how about taking him out to spend time together? You seem like a very busy person, and spending quality time together is the most precious gift you can give when life feels hectic." Alberu considered her words.

"Is that enough?"

The woman’s smile was reassuring. “My dear, if your partner loves you, they will cherish any gift you give, no matter how small or simple. What matters most is the intention and love behind it. If they value you, they will value whatever you provide.”

The sentiment struck a chord in his heart.

"I see..."

“Although, as a woman myself, I can say that a physical gift is always appreciated. It’s something we love, you know? This old woman knows a thing or two about these things,” she joked, making Alberu chuckle.

His gaze returned to the bracelet at the stall.

The redhead made every gift he received himself. Shouldn't Alberu also try to make something sincere?

But as he looked at the bracelet, a sense of doubt set in. He struggled to imagine how he could create something that was not only beautiful but also meaningful. Alberu was no craftsman, and while he was quite good at baking, he didn't want to just make simple cookies and hope the redhead would appreciate them.

Or maybe he could...

However, he needed to get back to the inn.

"I’ll take the bracelet, please pack it in the best packaging you have."

The woman’s face beamed with joy; finally, someone was making a purchase.

“Of course! How about I add a little extra touch? I can engrave something on the stone of the bracelet—maybe your partner’s name? My husband is quite skilled at that.” Without hesitation, Alberu agreed as he took the bracelet to prepare it.

After about an hour, Alberu received the bracelet, peeking inside to see his partner’s name initials delicately engraved. A smile played on his lips as he handed her five gold coins.

“Ah, young man, I believe you’ve made a mistake—the bracelet is only two copper coins.” The woman frowned, returning the extra coins to him.

Alberu shook his head slowly, pushing the coins back toward her.

“This is my way of saying thank you, Ma'am. Your advice was truly helpful to me.”

She looked at him in surprise before a warm laugh escaped her lips.

"You are a kind-hearted soul; your partner is truly lucky to have you as a husband."

In that moment, Alberu struggled with the urge to confess that he felt more fortunate in the relationship, unsure if he truly deserved such a compliment. Instead, he simply smiled and thanked her again before making his way back to the inn.

He had to prepare a lot of desserts in just two days.

The redhead had once mentioned how much he enjoyed stargazing with his mother in the past. Perhaps they could do it together. Alberu imagined taking the redhead to the cliff near the beach where they had celebrated his birthday, spending the day together. A picnic under the stars could also be a lovely activity.

"Your Highness..."

"Yes, please report."

"The prince consort is reported missing from the palace."

"...What?"

Notes:

Ok, so... New book. Yay!
And it's Albecale, yayy.

Don't worry, I am working on my other books, I just have been down in my mental health. I've lost the most important person in my life in 2025, and I haven't been fairing well, i am still trying to stand on my own without their support anymore
I've also been burnt out and procrastinating things for some time now, that's why I made this story to get my motivation to write the others back. But I promise I'm not abandoning any of my work.

I might be rewriting it though, I can't help but cringe everytime I read the work I have published TT

Anyways, so about this chapter. Hu wee mama, this is gonna be full of angst. This work is a writing project to improve how I write angst. Though I don't think it's hitting that line yet. I'm trying tho, so if anyone wants to give feedback on how I should improve my way of writing angsty stuff, I will be honored to listen.

Anyways, about the chapter, I need to explain some stuff so people won't be so confused.

• The timeline of this story would be all mixed up everywhere to try making it look more mysterious :P
I would probably explain the whole timeline later in the last chapter, or I will make an extra chapter to explain
• In some scenes where both Cale and Alberu seem weird. Yeah, because some of it is a dream or a figment of Alberu's imaginations. Dream scenes comes mostly when they're in the garden by the willow tree, or by the cliffs. There is a reason for that though. It'll all be explained later on.
• The drink Cale accidentally made is coffee. Since it was never mentioned in the novel, I took advantage of it. Besides, I think it's funny that Came had somehow created a drink that will be one of the most popular drinks in the world

I think that's all I need to say for now.
That's all for this chapter guess, see you later in a year :)
