Work Text:
Akito seems to have a knack for getting himself into dumb situations without even trying. Today is one of those days. It started when Vivid BAD SQUAD needed to relocate practice to SEKAI due to horrendous weather, but they were quickly interrupted by Rin and Len wanting to play a new game MEIKO told them about. They sat at a booth, with Akito and Toya facing An and Kohane, while the twins pulled up chairs at the end of the table.
One thing led to another, and now he's waiting for one of them to stick a word to his face.
The rules are easy: the Kagamines think of a word, write it on a sticky note, and put it on one of the VBS member's forehead. They have to take turns guessing what it is by asking yes or no questions. Judging by the amount of giggles and excited whispers he can hear, Akito already hates it. He wants to see what's happening, but Rin was very clear about the ‘no peeking’ rule.
Suddenly cold hands press something to his forehead, and a high, excited voice chirps, “Okay! You can look!”
Akito blinks his eyes open. Obviously, he looks at Toya first. The boy beside him does the same.
“Pffft,” Toya chuckles immediately. “Interesting… I wonder if you'll get it.”
Toya's is music, written with a few messy smiley faces around it. Akito smirks. “Yeah, you too.”
He directs his gaze at the girls. An has ice cream and Kohane has hamburger, both relatively simple. However, they both erupt into giggles upon seeing Akito's word. He groans.
“Is it something stupid?” He asks.
“No, no,” Kohane replied, still smiling. “I think it'll be fun. I believe in you, Shinonome.”
“Yeah, you got this!” An adds, which does nothing to reassure him.
“Alright, alright! Let's start!” Rin and Len say excitedly. Though it was their idea to play, they both just wanted to watch Vivid BAD SQUAD guess their words. Akito figures it could be exciting for them, but he'd really rather one of the twins be in his place right now.
“I’ll go first,” An declares. “Is it alive?”
“Nope,” Akito replies. Toya and Kohane shake their heads.
“Hm. Kohane, your turn!”
“Uh, okay.” She pauses, thinking. “Is it a food?”
“Woah, right on!” An grins. “As expected from our adorable leader!”
Kohane giggles. “An-chan, don't…”
“What, is it so wrong for me to be telling the truth?” She teases.
“Toya! It's your turn!” Len interrupts the painful flirting. Toya blinks, brought back from where he was zoned out and staring blankly at the table. God, he's so cute. Sometimes Akito forgets he's actually dating this idiot.
“Oh. Is it… tangible?”
Kohane shakes her head. “No. Good guess, Aoyagi.”
“The hell does that mean?” Akito and An ask in unison.
“If something is tangible, it means you can touch it.” Toya explains, suddenly poking Akito in the cheek. “It’s more broad than only asking if it's an object or food, for example.”
“Pshh. Okay, mister detective,” Akito gives him an affectionate punch to the shoulder. “Guess it's my turn, right?”
Hm. What would Rin and Len pick for me…? If it's something as hard as what Toya has, I'm done for…
Suddenly, an idea strikes him. Even he's slightly impressed by the genius of it.
“‘Kay, got it.” He says proudly. “Do I like it?”
Somehow, that gets everyone going. Rin and Len snicker, while Kohane politely giggles and An erupts into laughter. He glances over at Toya for some sort of explanation, but he's also clearly trying to hide a smile.
“Hey, what is it?” Akito huffs, feeling incredibly left out of the joke. “That was a good question!”
“Yeah, yeah. I'm pretty sure the whole world knows you like it,” An smirks.
“I assume you like it,” Toya chuckles. “It would be quite disappointing if you didn't.”
“You really, really like it!” Rin beams. Len has a matching expression of amusement.
Woah. So he really likes this thing, then. If An said ‘the whole world knows’, it must be something he either has often or talks about a lot. The first things that come to mind are pancakes and cheesecake.
Then, of course, Toya said it would be disappointing if he didn't like it. He briefly wonders if he and Toya have the same word, but the Kagamines wouldn't do that. Akito supposes it would be disappointing if he didn't like pancakes or cheesecake, considering they've gone out on so many dates centered around those. That's it, then. He has his next question.
“Okay,” he says smugly when Toya's turn finishes (this time he asked whether it exists naturally. Akito really needs to take away those detective books - his boyfriend is too good at this). “Is it sweet?” he asks.
That triggers another round of laughter. Akito groans.
“Are you seriously just gonna do this every time?!” He complains.
“Sorry,” An says unapologetically. “Your questions are just really bad.”
“Says you,” Akito replies, though he's not really getting at anything. It's just an instinctive comeback, because honestly, he doesn't think the questions are that bad. He's just getting bad answers.
“Wait, Akito,” Toya says before An can come up with something in response. “What do you mean by ‘sweet’?”
Akito raises an eyebrow. “Dude, the fuck else would I mean? I'm asking, like, does it taste nice?”
Toya covers his mouth, and for a second Akito thinks he said something wrong. Then, the boy dissolves into giggles, cheeks dusting with pink. Akito thinks it's the most adorable thing he's ever seen. Of course, he's still frustrated about his word.
“C’mon, answer me.” He kicks Toya's foot under the table. In front of him, An and Kohane exchange mischievous looks. “You guys suck,” he says.
“I think,” Kohane finally starts. “It could be sweet.”
“Yeah, that's a good way of saying it,” An nods, crossing her arms. Rin and Len both nod. Akito glances at Toya.
“Is that true?”
“I… suppose so?” Toya's face is still pink. Akito's incredibly confused. They must mean pancakes, right? There are savory ones that people often get, so the vague answers aren't too uncalled for.
A couple more rounds pass. Kohane gets her word first, with an “is it an american dish?” followed by an exclamation of “oh! Hamburgers!”. An and Toya are both pretty close.
Akito's information, on the other hand, is all over the place. So far, he has:
- Something he really likes
- May or may not be sweet
- Not pancakes, like he thought it was. This reset all progress.
- Yes, the word exists and they're not ganging up against him
- It is tangible (he was desperate and had to resort to Toya's dumb fancy word)
Akito's still leaning towards the dessert option. If it isn't pancakes, maybe it's cheesecake.
“Can I… bite it? Do I want to?” He's grasping at straws now. One would think he's a professional comedian with the way everyone laughs at his terrible questions. And, once again, he gets equally terrible answers.
“Perhaps.” Toya smirks. Akito's never seen him look so fucking amused. “You've bitten it before.”
An cackles.
“Fucking hell.” He mutters when his turn arrives again. He looks at the Kagamines with big eyes. “Can't I get a hint?”
Rin and Len, who have been slowly slipping into the ‘ultimate rulemaker’ roles, glance at each other. They seem to have a discussion with their eyes before coming to a decision.
“Fine. One hint,” Rin says, putting her hands on her hips and nearly elbowing her twin in the ribs.
“Okay, okay, Akito.” An grabs his attention from across the table, suddenly looking serious. “It’s not a food. I know you think it is, but it's not.”
Not a food? But it's sweet?
“Is it an object?”
“No,” everyone replies in unison.
“Is it a person?” Akito asks half-heartedly, not expecting to get it right anytime soon.
“Yes!” they shout suddenly. Akito startles.
“Wait, seriously?”
“Yeah, you're almost there!” Len exclaims.
A person who I really like, might be sweet, and have bitten…?
Oh.
“Oh my god!” He shouts, jumping to his feet and pointing an accusatory finger at Toya. “It's you!”
“Yeah!” The table erupts into cheers as he snatches the sticky note off his face. Akito feels a blush creeping up his face as things start to click.
“Hey, I don't bite you!” he furrows his brow.
“You have,” Toya shrugs.
“Was he sweet?” An teases when Akito finally sits again. He scowls.
“Shut up or I'll bite you next.” An wrinkles her nose.
“Good job, Akito!” Len gives him a high five and looks between the remaining competitors. “Now it's An’s turn!
“Wait! Me too!” Rin holds out her hand for Akito to smack as well.
“Hold on, that's not fair! He asked, like, three questions in a row!” An points out to the twins.
“What, ya can't do it?” Akito teases, sending An into a fit of some sort. He stops listening eventually, zoning out and thinking about his word. Of course he had Toya. It was so obvious, now that he thinks about it. The first question really gave it away.
…Whatever. His eyes meet Toya's and the boy smiles at him. Now he can just enjoy this time with the sweetest boy on earth.
