Chapter Text

The boardroom of Chi Enterprises hummed with tension, the air thick with the scent of polished mahogany and desperation. Chi Cheng sat at the head of the long table, his fingers drumming impatiently on the surface as he scanned the faces of his executives. The hostile takeover bid had come out of nowhere—a shadowy conglomerate called Apex Holdings had swooped in overnight, buying up shares like a predator in the dark. Stock prices plummeted, investors panicked, and now, on this crisp autumn morning, the announcement was set to seal their fate.

"President Chi," his assistant, a young woman named Li Mei, whispered urgently as she leaned in. "The buyer's representative is here. They're insisting on a private meeting before the press conference."

Chi Cheng's jaw tightened. He was a man in his mid-thirties, sharp-featured with dark eyes that could pierce through steel. Once, he had been untouchable, building his empire through ruthless deals and unyielding control. But today, doubt flickered in those eyes. "Who is it? Did they give a name?"

"No, sir. Just that it's the CEO of Apex himself."

He stood, straightening his tailored suit. "Fine. Show them in. Let's see what this vulture wants before picking at our bones."

As Li Mei hurried out, Chi Cheng paced to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. Shanghai sprawled below, a testament to his success—or what was left of it. Three years ago, he had been at the peak, signing deals that crushed competitors. But personal matters had always been his weakness. He pushed away the memory of a certain face, a man he had bent to his will in a moment of twisted desire and power. Wu Suowei. The name still lingered like a ghost, but he had long buried that chapter.

The door opened with a soft click, and Chi Cheng turned. His breath caught.

Standing there was Wu Suowei, impeccably dressed in a charcoal gray suit that hugged his lean frame. His hair was shorter now, styled with effortless sophistication, and his once-soft eyes held a glacial edge. He looked older, harder—transformed from the vulnerable young man Chi Cheng had known into something forged in fire.

"You," Chi Cheng breathed, his voice a mix of shock and disbelief. "Wu Suowei? What the hell are you doing here?"

Wu Suowei stepped inside, closing the door behind him with deliberate slowness. A faint, cold smile played on his lips as he approached the table. "President Chi. It's been a while. I see the years haven't been kind to you."

Chi Cheng's mind reeled. Flashbacks assaulted him: the dingy apartment where he had first cornered Wu Suowei, a struggling intern desperate for a job. The contract—three years of servitude, humiliation masked as "mentorship." Wu Suowei had signed it under duress, his hands trembling, eyes filled with silent pleas. Chi Cheng had taken everything: his pride, his body, his spirit. And when the term ended, he had discarded him like yesterday's news.

But now... "Apex Holdings. You're the CEO? How? You were nothing when I let you go."

"Let me go?" Wu Suowei's laugh was sharp, devoid of warmth. He pulled out a chair opposite Chi Cheng and sat, crossing his legs with casual authority. "You didn't let me go, Chi Cheng. You threw me away. After three years of your games, your demands, your... touches that left scars deeper than skin."

Chi Cheng flinched inwardly but masked it with anger. "That was business. You agreed to it. And now you're here for revenge? Pathetic. You think buying my company will erase what happened?"

Wu Suowei's eyes narrowed, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Business? Is that what you call forcing me to kneel in your office, night after night? Making me beg for scraps while you laughed? No, Chi Cheng. That wasn't business. That was you breaking me. And yes, I'm here for revenge. But it's more than that. The contract term has ended... now it's my turn to make the rules."

The words hung in the air like a guillotine. Chi Cheng sank into his chair, his world tilting. "How did you do it? Apex was a nobody firm two years ago. You couldn't have—"

"Couldn't have what? Risen from the ashes you left me in?" Wu Suowei leaned forward, his gaze unyielding. "After you discarded me, I had nothing. No job, no dignity. I slept on streets for weeks, Chi Cheng. Remember that? Or did you forget the man you ruined?"

Chi Cheng's throat tightened. He hadn't forgotten. In quiet moments, guilt had gnawed at him, but he had drowned it in work and women. "I gave you opportunities. You learned from me."

"Learned?" Wu Suowei's voice rose, laced with bitterness. "I learned how to hate. How to plot. I clawed my way up, starting as a lowly analyst at a startup. I worked 20-hour days, built alliances, invested every penny I scraped together. And when Apex needed a leader, I proved I was the one to turn it into a giant. Your empire's weaknesses? I know them all. You taught me that, too."

The door knocked softly, but Chi Cheng ignored it. "What do you want, Suowei? Money? A position? We can negotiate."

Wu Suowei's smile widened, predatory. "Negotiate? Like you did with me? 'Sign or starve,' you said. No, Chi Cheng. I want you to feel what I felt. Helpless. Broken. The takeover is done—your board will vote me in by noon. You'll be out, penniless if I choose."

Chi Cheng's fists clenched. "You can't. I built this from nothing. My family—"

"Your family?" Wu Suowei interrupted, his tone mocking. "The same family that turned a blind eye to your indiscretions? They won't save you. And neither will your charm."

Memories flooded back: nights in his penthouse, Wu Suowei pinned beneath him, whispering protests that Chi Cheng ignored. The contract had been his shield, but now it was a noose. "I... I was wrong. Is that what you want to hear? I regret it."

Wu Suowei stood abruptly, slamming his palm on the table. "Regret? Now? After years of silence? You never apologized. You just moved on, while I pieced myself together shard by shard."

Chi Cheng rose too, stepping closer. Their faces were inches apart, the air charged. "What if I do now? I'm sorry, Suowei. For everything."

Wu Suowei's eyes flickered with something—pain? Fury? He shoved Chi Cheng back. "Too late. Your sorry means nothing. Today, you lose it all."

The door burst open; executives poured in, faces pale. "President Chi, the press is waiting. The buyer's announcement—"

Wu Suowei straightened his tie. "Tell them the new CEO is ready."

As he walked out, Chi Cheng grabbed his arm. "Suowei, wait. We can talk. Please."

Wu Suowei yanked free, his voice a venomous hiss. "Don't touch me. Ever again."

The room emptied, leaving Chi Cheng alone with the echo of his downfall. He slumped against the window, watching Wu Suowei stride toward the conference hall. The man he had broken had returned unbreakable, and the hurt he had inflicted was now a mirror, reflecting back tenfold.

But deep down, Chi Cheng felt a twisted pull—a remnant of the obsession that started it all. This wasn't over. Not yet.
