Work Text:
I gently open the door.
Sayori jerked up from her bed. But it wasn't a hospital bed like she expected. It was her own? It didn't make sense. It was SURE TO WORK. But it didn't. Even then, she should've woken up in the hospital while doctors are relieved she's still alive. Nope. She grabbed one of her stuffed animals, her big cow.
Do you think they’d be mad?
She looked at the clock, it was 7:19. Her eyes widened. School started at 7:30! She rushed to get her uniform on, not buttoning the blazer. She brushed her teeth as fast as she could, and toothpaste dripped down to her neck.
Bruises.
She winced, it wasn't cold enough for a scarf, but there was a breeze out today… so it should be fine. She slipped on her shoes and grabbed her bag to run out the door. She slipped and got grass stains on her tall, white socks. Whatever.
She threw open the school doors, and she remembered had a couple minutes to spare, since doors only close at 7:30, not attendance. She got to her locker, but nobody greeted her like usual. She looked into her class. Monika had her head down, and MC didn't show up.
Did they find out? No. That makes no sense.
“Hey! Monika!” She shouted cheerfully, “Have you seen MC?” She stared at her for a couple of seconds. No response. Stupid stupid stupid! She walked back to her desk dejectedly and continued the day as usual. She glanced at Monika throughout the day, but she didn't answer any questions like usual, and she didn't pick up her pencil even once.
Typically when changing to 4th and 5th period, she passes next to Yuri and they chat a bit. But not today. She passed by her, and got no response. Not even a reaction. She started to wonder if something happened to MC. but that's not right. They'd still talk to her!
…I hope.
School was over, and she walked over to the clubroom. She read the sign.
“Literature Club.” But something wasn't right, nobody was in there, not even Monika, who is usually the earliest of the bunch. Sayori looked at the window, the doors were closed and there was a piece of paper stuck to it.
She walked towards the paper and read it, almost immediately she felt a wave of horrible feelings wash over her, too many to name.
There was a bolded section on the sheet of paper, and when she processed what it really said, her eyes widened in horror. In all caps, it read, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the literature club has been forced to disband. We ask all members to clear any personal items out of the clubroom so that a new club can take place.”
Sayori walked through, and stopped by the cooking room, where most of Natsuki's cooking was done. She knocked on the door a few times, and just came in anyways. She saw multiple messed up batches of cupcakes.
“Natsuki? What's with all these batches?” She asked, “Is everything okay? You dont usually mess up batches.”
No response, Natsuki didn't even bat an eye. Sayori started to tremble a little, tears welled up in her eyes. Why was everyone being so mean? Did she do something? She turned her head, even if Natsuki was ignoring her, she wouldn't want her to see her so vulnerable.
I just want to try again. It all hurts too much… I guess I really should disappear.
Sayori's spiral of thoughts were interrupted when she heard a thud and a groan. She turned her head towards Natsuki, and she kicked the fridge, making a glass jar fall to the floor and shatter. She dropped to her knees.
“God… why did it have to be her…” Natsuki whispered to herself as she sobbed in her hands, “That dumbass… why would you do that…” She slumped into her knees.
Sayori winced, she hated to see her like this. She reached a hand out, but was distracted by the footsteps of what sounded like a teacher.
“Nats-” She was interrupted by Natsuki getting up as fast as possible and wiping her eyes, hurrying to wipe up the broken glass. By this point, Sayori knew they all hated her. The wind that she felt breeze against her as Natsuki ran past her only made it worse. Tears streamed down her face, she tried to wipe them up, but more kept on coming. She grabbed her stuff and ran to the school doors.
She walked into her house, her eyes all puffy, and she sat in her bed looking out the window. MC walked by, she didn't even want to say hi. She knew he’d ignore her. That's what everyone has done. Even teachers! Sayori fell asleep sobbing.
She woke up. Everything was a little blurry, she rubbed her eyes, looking around. Her blazer was wrinkled on the floor, the ripped calendar was on the floor. God, she barely knew what day it was. It's not like she was going to even try and get out of bed. She stared out the window again. By the time school had started, she realized she never saw MC walk to school. She got out of bed, and started walking towards his house.
!!!
Sayori rang the door bell, but got no answer. She walked inside anyway, who cares about anything anymore… The door creaked, and she walked into a dark house.
“MC? I know you're in here. Don't you dare ignore me. I'm not joking anymore…” Sayori walked around the house and it felt like a horror movie. She saw a lamp on the nightstand against the couch, and heard cries.
“Hello? MC? Is that you? I swear if you ignore me i’ll-” Sayori was cut off when she sat MC sitting on the couch, rereading the last part of her last poem, over and over again until he couldn't because he broke into tears again.
“Sayori… why… why would you do that.” He said Sayori approached him and leaned on the couch.
“I'm sorry MC… I-” She was interrupted by him again, and he sobbed, Sayori still felt ignored so she went to hold his shoulder for comfort. To her surprise, it dropped, but through her peripheral vision she could've sworn she didn't miss–
Ah!
What the hell?
WHAT THE HELL?!
Sayori stared at her own hand as it had passed straight through him. The sight made her sick to her stomach… That's why everyone was ignoring her. She didn't do anything wrong, they couldn't hear her. Everything clicked, the reason she was on her bed, the reason the club disbanded, the other members.
It wasn't all just a weird coincidence. She was dead, she had a feeling from the start.
I never really survived.
