Midnight Rain

Summary:

Gambit threaded his fingers through her hair, thumb brushing her temple, tracing her jawline, holding her like he could feel the fragility of the world and wanted to protect it in the space between them.

“You’re mine tonight,” she whispered, voice soft but firm, tremors in her chest from the intensity of it all.

“And you’re mine,” he murmured back, pressing a lingering kiss to her temple. “Forever chère, … if we let it.”

Work Text:

The city outside had softened into a misty glow, rain reduced to a faint drizzle that clung to the windows like delicate beads of glass.

The apartment smelled faintly of wet pavement and warm wood, the remnants of rain mingling with the subtle scent of Gambit’s cologne—a rich, spicy undertone that made Rogue’s chest tighten every time she breathed it in.

The lights from the street below filtered through the blinds, casting long, golden bars across the hardwood floor, fractured like pieces of stained glass.

Rogue leaned against the wall, watching him sprawled lazily on the rug, the remnants of their earlier card game scattered around his knees. He looked impossibly relaxed, that crooked grin playing on his lips, hair damp from the rain, eyes sparkling with amusement.

She could feel her pulse quicken just from looking at him, the ache of longing pressing against her ribs.

“You know… I think you’re only this calm ‘cause I let you win,” she teased, stepping closer, the soft wool of her socks making no sound on the floor.

Gambit’s grin widened, a glint of mischief in his eyes. “Maybe… or maybe… I just like seein’ you like this,” he drawled, his voice low, teasing.

Rogue shook her head, trying not to smile, but the warmth spreading through her chest betrayed her. She moved closer, standing over him, hands brushing his shoulders, fingertips tracing idle patterns that made him shiver. He leaned up slightly, catching her hand and holding it, the warmth of his palm searing through her glove.

“Mon amour…” he murmured, voice rough, low. “You always… get too close.”

“Maybe I like it,” she whispered, circling around him, letting her hands drift down his chest, teasing the edges of his coat. “Maybe I like seeing you squirm.”

He let out a low, breathless laugh, shifting slightly so she had to lean in closer to keep her balance. “Squirm, huh… you’re dangerous, you know that?”

“You like it,” she countered with a smile, and before he could respond, she tugged him up, laughter spilling from her as he stumbled slightly. They were standing together in the center of the living room, the city lights painting them gold and amber, the air thick with warmth and the faint scent of rain.

And then the music started—soft, almost imperceptible, a slow melody drifting from the small speaker in the corner. Neither of them had planned it, but it didn’t matter. Rogue reached for his hands, and he met her halfway, guiding her into a slow, swaying dance.

Not a formal dance, not choreographed, just two bodies moving in sync, letting the rhythm of their hearts replace the rhythm of the music. Rogue pressed her cheek against his chest, feeling the thrum of his heartbeat beneath her ear. Gambit tilted his head down, lips brushing the crown of her head, murmuring against her hair.

“You feel like… home,” he whispered, a tremor in his voice she hadn’t heard before.

Rogue tilted her chin up, lips brushing his chest softly. “You always do.” And then their lips met—tentative at first, a feather-light touch that tested the waters, before deepening into something more. The kiss was playful, teasing, full of unspoken confessions. Her fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him closer, eliciting a low, rough groan from him that made her chest flutter.

They stumbled backward together, laughing breathlessly, until the sofa caught them. Rogue straddled his lap lightly, one hand on his shoulder, the other cupping his cheek, fingers warm and insistent. Gambit’s hands roamed over her back and sides, memorizing the curves and planes of her body like he’d been searching for them all night.

Their kisses grew slower, more deliberate, tasting and tracing, lips brushing, teasing, lingering. Rogue pressed her forehead against his, feeling his breath, his warmth, the faint tremor in his body beneath her touch. Gambit whispered her name between kisses, low and rough, and she responded in kind, murmuring against his lips, pressing closer, feeling the pull of him against her.

Time lost all meaning. The rain outside became a gentle rhythm, a soft percussion that matched the pulse in her veins. Rogue’s hands traced the line of his jaw, down his neck, eliciting small shivers and soft murmurs. Gambit pressed his forehead to hers, lips brushing again, teasing, playful, before he captured her mouth in a kiss that stole her breath and left her heart racing.

She shifted, straddling him fully now, their bodies pressing together, limbs tangled. Every touch was electric, every soft laugh, every whispered name a current running through them. Rogue’s fingers traced idle patterns across his chest, memorizing the warmth and the strength beneath her fingertips. Gambit’s hands rested low on her back, coaxing her closer, guiding her movements with the smallest adjustments, making her laugh and gasp in equal measure.

The city faded entirely, leaving only the warmth of skin, the soft rain outside, and the tangled intimacy of their bodies. Gambit’s fingers combed through her hair, tugging lightly, tracing slow circles on her neck, letting her shiver beneath him. Rogue pressed soft kisses along his jaw, his collarbone, the curve of his neck, each movement playful, teasing, deliberate.

“You’re… impossible,” she whispered after a long pause, voice husky, soft, trembling.

“And you, always get me,” he replied, voice low, teasing, a hint of roughness making her shiver.

Hours passed, though it felt like moments. They moved little, yet every touch, every brush of fingers, every playful tug of hair, every whisper was electric, tying them together in a cocoon of warmth, trust, and unspoken confessions. Rogue rested her head against his chest, letting her lips brush his skin idly, murmuring soft laughs and half-groans that pulled rough, low growls from him. Gambit held her tighter, pressing soft kisses to her temple, crown, jaw, whispering her name, letting her tug at his hair, pulling him closer, drawing him in with the tiniest of motions.

Finally, they collapsed fully onto the sofa, limbs tangled, breaths ragged but soft, laughter spilling quietly between whispered names and gentle murmurs. Rogue nestled into his chest, listening to the rhythm of him, every heartbeat grounding her, every shiver a reminder that he was here, alive, warm, and hers.

And for a long, unbroken while, that’s exactly what they did—just being, just holding, just letting the night stretch on around them, intimate, playful, and endlessly theirs.

The city could wait; the rain could fall; the hours could pass—they existed only for each other, each breath, each heartbeat, each whispered confession binding them closer. Rogue shifted slightly against him, her fingers tracing lazy circles over the expanse of his chest, feeling the warmth beneath his coat seep through to her skin.

Gambit’s hand slid down her back, firm but gentle, as if memorizing every curve, every line, every small tremor that ran through her when he pressed a fingertip just right. The air between them was thick, not with urgency, but with a playful, simmering intimacy—every glance, every brush of skin a conversation in itself.

“You feel… so good like this,” she murmured, tilting her head to press her lips lightly against the side of his neck, tracing slow, teasing patterns that made him shiver and exhale lowly through his nose.

Gambit’s fingers tangled in her hair, holding her close, thumb stroking the delicate curve of her cheek. His own lips brushed the top of her head, over her temple, behind her ear, a slow trail of warmth and pressure that left her chest tight with need and delight.

They didn’t speak for long, letting the quiet hum of the apartment, the soft patter of the rain, and the gentle rhythm of their breathing fill the space.

Rogue closed her eyes, feeling the tug of his fingers in her hair, the press of his chest beneath her, and the occasional playful brush of his lips to her temple or jawline. She could feel every beat of his heart, strong and steady, grounding her, claiming her as much as she claimed him with the soft pressure of her body leaning into his.

Gambit’s hands drifted slowly, deliberately, along her back, memorizing the line of her spine, the warmth of her shoulders.

He leaned his forehead against hers, lips brushing softly, teasingly, each kiss a whispered conversation. Rogue responded with small, playful nips to his jaw, tiny hums against his lips, and soft murmurs of his name that drew deep, rough breaths from him.

Every laugh, every gasp, every soft sigh lingered in the air, wrapping them in the quiet they had created together.

He pressed a slow kiss to her jaw, then the curve of her neck, letting her nuzzle against him, basking in the simplicity of the moment.

Time seemed suspended. Rain whispered against the windows, the city lights casting golden reflections across the room, and the warmth between them spread like a tide, slow, steady, endless.

Their hands, lips, and whispers carried the conversation they didn’t need words for—soft confessions, playful teasing, unspoken promises. Every small laugh, every brush of skin, every tremor and shiver was a language all their own.

Rogue tilted her head up slowly, lips brushing his jawline, then teasingly over the corner of his mouth. Gambit’s eyes softened, dark with desire and tenderness, and he let out a small, breathless laugh as he held her closer. "Chère,” he murmured, low, almost reverent, “I… don’t think I ever want this night to end.”

“Nor I,” she replied softly, nuzzling closer, letting the world fade entirely. She pressed her lips to his temple, then the curve of his neck, lingering in every kiss, tracing a trail that was playful, teasing, and infinitely intimate.

Gambit responded in kind, lips brushing hers again and again, teasing, soft, lingering, before capturing her mouth fully, letting their kiss stretch, full of laughter, whispered names, and the quiet heat of endless desire.

Rogue nestled fully into his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart, the warmth of his hands in her hair and across her back, the gentle press of his lips along her temple and forehead. Gambit held her like she might disappear if he didn’t, softly murmuring her name, playful teasing mixing with low, rough murmurs that anchored them both in the quiet intimacy of the night.

Rogue shifted slightly, lifting her head just enough to meet Gambit’s gaze, the dim light catching the glint in his eyes, dark and molten with desire.

The air between them thrummed with the quiet heat of anticipation, every small brush of their hands or knees sending little jolts of electricity through her body. Gambit’s fingers tightened slightly in her hair, holding her gently yet possessively, as if he could anchor her in this moment forever.

Without a word, he leaned in, lips hovering just above hers, teasing, letting her feel the warmth and weight of him before the touch.

Rogue’s breath hitched; she reached up with one hand, cupping his cheek, the pads of her fingers brushing over the faint stubble at his jaw, feeling the rough contrast against the softness of his lips.

Then, finally, their mouths met. The kiss started slow, gentle, almost exploratory, lips brushing and parting, teasing each other with feather-light touches that made her shiver against him.

Gambit’s hands moved down her back, pressing her closer, as if sensing the precise moment she needed more pressure, more warmth, more of him. Rogue’s lips parted, her tongue teasing his in soft, experimental strokes, drawing a low, breathless groan from him that vibrated against her lips and sent a thrill straight to her core.

He tilted his head, deepening the kiss, lips pressing firmly, claiming, yet still gentle, letting her respond in her own rhythm.

Rogue wrapped her arms around his neck, fingers threading through his damp, slightly tousled hair, tugging him closer, feeling the warmth of him seep into her like it had always belonged there.

Each soft murmur of his name that escaped her lips made him groan again, low and rough, a sound that filled the quiet apartment and made her pulse quicken.

Gambit’s hands roamed slowly, deliberately, memorizing the curve of her back, the press of her waist against him, sending shivers in slow, teasing waves.

Rogue tilted her head, pressing kisses along his jawline, down the column of his neck, feeling the tension in him melt under her touch. Every sigh, every soft gasp, every tremor of his lips against hers was a conversation, wordless yet intimate, pulling them deeper into the cocoon of their closeness.

The kiss stretched, lingering, evolving, playful and demanding at the same time. Rogue nipped at his lower lip, eliciting a sharp, breathless laugh from him that made her giggle into his mouth, then deepen the kiss again.

His hands slid over her sides, resting lightly on her hips, guiding her movements, coaxing her closer without breaking the rhythm. Every gentle tug, every brush of his thumb along her cheek, sent sparks of warmth racing through her body.

Rogue’s hands moved to the small of his back, drawing him impossibly closer, pressing her body fully against his. Gambit’s lips left hers briefly to press along her temple, her jaw, her collarbone—soft, teasing trails that made her shiver and whimper softly against him.

When he returned to her mouth, the kiss was full, slow, and deep, their lips exploring each other with playful hunger, lingering in every press, every brush, every teasing glide.

Rogue pressed her cheek against his shoulder, sighing into him, and Gambit responded by holding her closer, lips grazing her hairline and the side of her neck, letting her feel the heat of his body, the rough softness of his lips, the gentle weight of his chest against hers.

They paused only briefly, foreheads pressed together, breaths mingling, hearts hammering in perfect sync. Gambit tilted his head, capturing her lips again in a slow, intoxicating kiss, full of warmth, mischief, and something unspoken but profoundly tender.

The world outside, the rain, the apartment—all of it faded. There was only the softness of his lips, the warmth of his body, the steady rhythm of his heart beneath her ear, and the endless, simmering intimacy that stretched time until it felt infinite.

Gambit’s hands stayed firm yet gentle on her back, drawing her impossibly close, whispering soft, rough confessions and her name between kisses that lingered, teasing and slow, letting each touch, each breath, each heartbeat speak the language of their closeness.

And for long, quiet hours, that was all they did—just kissing, touching, murmuring, laughing softly, holding each other like the world had stopped outside their small, golden-lit sanctuary, letting intimacy, playfulness, and love wrap around them like the gentle rain outside.
