What if, instead of new life, the Fold of Life brought an old one back?
After the Origami Festival, Mario couldn't get that question out of his head...

Title is a line from the song "We'll Meet Again" by Vera Lynn.

Notes:

I wanted to see more post-gam content in Origami King, so I decided to try my hand at it. I hope you enjoy!

Also don't expect it to be too good, this is my first fic on AO3.

Chapter Text

Ever since he saw the entry on the Fold of Life in the Origami Craftsman's book, Mario couldn't get it out of his head. Of course, he was able to get his mind off it for a bit, but now that he was back home after the Origami Festival, it wasn't giving him peace. The idea that something could be brought to life with just folds? It intrigued him.

Finally, after a month, Mario gave in. He started practicing origami. He knew the basics as he learned them before the festival.

Mario folded paper into inanimate origami first. After a few weeks, he attempted the Fold of Life for the first time, and it... Worked! He made a simple butterfly out of iridescent paper, the colours changing with the way the light fell on it. As Mario watched the butterfly flutter around the room, he felt as though he should name the it.

The name "Tippi" called out to him for some reason.

Mario decided to show Tippi to Luigi, who was amazed. "Wow Bro! The origami is alive! Just like how Olivia and Olly were!"

Mario froze for a second at the last part. Of course, that's why he was doing all of this. And odd question was stuck in his mind: Could the Fold of Life bring an old life back instead of giving a new one? Since the Origami Craftsman decided to not do it anymore,

After what felt like days of practice with the Fold of Life, Mario felt ready.

He took a yellow peice of paper, starting to fold it with love and precision. As he worked, he couldn't help but smile at the possibility of what may happen. Soon enough, the paper started turning into a familiar origami girl. The fold had worked, and mario stepped back. All that was left was to wait. The origami girl woke up. She floated up a bit, her eyes wide with curiosity as she looked around before smoothing out her dress and fixing her crown. She finally noticed Mario, and she made the same shocked expression as she did when they were trying to stop Olly.

"M-Mario..?" Olivia asked in disbelief.
