Easter Love

Summary:

Bassie had always been envious of Cocoa. That is precisely the reason she always tried to avoid spending time with her fellow holiday toon.

Aka

Will Bassie break under pressure of being stuck in the elevator with the very toon she has forced herself to despise?

Notes:

Words can't describe how excited I am for this upcoming event. And what better way to showcase this than making a fic about one of my all time fav DW couples. ^^

Chapter 1: Stuck

Chapter Text

Bassie knew she never was the luckiest toon in the world.

Today, in particular, nothing seemed to be going her way.
First she dropped an entire basket of eggs she'd been decorating all day and night.

Afterwards, she somehow managed to get a stain on one of her favorite dresses.

And, now, to make the matters ten times worse, she was stuck in a broken elevator with her favorite toon in the whole wide world.

Cocoa!

Just hearing that name was enough for the poor Easter Main to go berserk.

It's not that she disliked the peppy little bunny. She found her fellow Holiday toon to be very sweet and helpful most of the time.

Cocoa was generous, hard-working, and never seemed to ask for anything in return.
It really came as no surprise why everyone else seemed to think so highly of her.

Cocoa was in no way, shape, or form an abrasive or unpleasant person to be around. Quite the opposite.

Oh, no. The real problem arose from a different kind of resentment. The one that coils around one's body like an invisible serpent of toil and mockery.

Envy

Beautiful, bright, with radiant spirit to perfectly match with the season she was created for, the chocolate hare was always a better pick for the Easter Main than herself.

Everyone seemed to secretly be aware of this.

Everyone besides Delilah, that is. That woman never seemed to waste a single moment in making Bassie feel useless, unwanted, and downright inadequate in her position as the face of everyone's favorite springtime festivity.

And now she was stuck with the distressed bunny as the latter paced all around the cold metallic prison chamber they all came to know as "the elevator".

"Oh my gosh, oh my gosh. What do we do? I can't stay here all day long, I've got tons of chores to help with. I've got that karaoke night all planned out, I promised Teagan I'd help with setting up one of her tea parties, I..."

The rest of lagomorph's words were left unheard, with Bassie trying her best not to snap at her 'friend' right there and then.

Being stuck in here was bad enough on its own. Being left with rambling Cocoa was like a scene coming straight from her deepest nightmare.

"Bassie. HEY, BASSIE!" An all too familiar voice buzzed, snapping the flower basket back to the presence.

"WAH-what is it?" Bassie yelped, flailing her arms as she did. It was something she always did when surprised or distressed.

"Are you alright?" the chocolate bunny inquired, bringing her face closer to the tan-skinned beauty.

"You were all spaced out in there. Is there something on your mind? Are you hurt? Scared? Please, don't be. I'm sure we'll be outta here soon enough."

Bassie stared back into her companion's dark brown eyes, deathly aware of how close the two girls were to each other.

Taking a few steps back, the flowery woman shook her head.
"No-no, I'm fine," she muttered awkwardly.
"I'm just sad that we're not back in the lobby with other toons, is all. I already get such little chance to see them and I sorely miss spending time with my fellow mains."

That was a blatant lie and Cocoa was likely much too perceptive to not see through it. Regardless, the bunny shook her head, placing her paw on the main's shoulder.

"Don't worry, I promise to protect you for as long as we're stuck in here. I know the situation might look scary right now, but it's important to look on the bright side of things.
The Easter is just a few days ahead and we've surely got plenty of toons who are finding a way to rescue us as we speak."

"Yeah..." Bassie nodded, glaring at the rabbit's paw which rested so firmly on her shoulder.
"I'll try not to stress about it much."

"Good. Glad to hear that!" Cocoa chirped, her face overtaken by one of her signature good-natured, high spirited smiles.
"You'll get to reunite with your friends, and I'll be going to tend to everyone's needs quicker than you can say "egg in the basket"."

Not knowing what to do or how to react properly, the basket nodded timidly, hoping the rabbit would just leave her alone already.

Why, oh why must her smile be so contagious?' thought the season main bitterly.
'I can almost swear that she does all this just to spite me. Yes, that's it! That MUST be it!!! she deduced.

All she wants is to gloat how much better and more competent she is

The basket almost went ballistic as she felt the rabbit's small yet flexible arms wrap around her, bringing the taller girl in for a big, loving hug.

"You know", Cocoa began. "it might be crazy of me to say this, but...
I was always hoping we'd get to spend some time alone, just between the two of us.
We barely ever get to talk. Heck, we barely ever get to see each other nowadays, somehow."

"M-mhm...", the leaner of the two women agreed half-heartedly. She almost felt guilty because it was all on purpose.

Was Cocoa secretly aware of all that? And, if so, why was she still being so nice to her? Is this just how she genuinely was.

"Now, don't get me wrong. Eggson and Flyte are incredible friends to hang around. But the two of us really needed some girl time to ourselves."

Bassie could feel a volcano erupting inside her head.

"I-I couldn't agree more." Bassie said through clenched teeth, forcing a smile.

To call it a smile would be an act of generosity, however. As it was practically a snarl. A snarl so indignant and enraged that Bassie was more than thankful for Cocoa's naive ignorance.

This isn't even a nightmare any longer, thought Bassie. THIS IS HELL!
