“Link! Watch out!”
The desert sand lay still under a cloudless sky. Sunlight beat down on the land below, casting unbearable heat towards anyone without the right gear or elixirs.
Princess Zelda and her swordsman had been on their way to Gerudo town when they’d gotten ambushed by some gibdoes. There was little time to prepare defence, and even less once the two realised most attacks did almost nothing in terms of damage.
Link turned towards the cry too late, and was rewarded with a painful claw in the face. He stumbled, dropping his sword. He heard Zelda call out again in the distance. Hurriedly, he retreated back to her.
She didn’t look up as he came to her side, fumbling instead in her pack for something they could use. The gibdo were closing in on them now. It would be a real shame if this was how it ended, after having gone through two calamities together. Luckily, they were too resourceful for that.
“Here,” she said, pushing a bomb flower and a shock fruit into his hands. “Try these. It’s the only combination we haven’t used yet.” Link nodded in affirmation, pulling up his bow. He stabbed the shock fruit on an arrow before stringing it. The electric shock that followed made him wince, but it certainly beat dying.
Aiming it carefully at the middle gibdo, he released. The effect was like magic. All the gibdo were within range of this seemingly artificial lighting strike, and it affected them greatly. Bits of rotting flesh fell from their faces. Their horrific malformed bodies crumbled up like paper, arms clawing at their uncanny eyes. But they weren’t quite dead.
He tossed the bomb flower up into the air and let a second arrow pierce through it over the monsters’ heads.
It exploded with a huge bang, followed by a high pitched ringing. Honestly, it was easy to forget how powerful those plants were. It was good they didn’t usually grow up on the surface. For a moment, all Link and Zelda could see was smoke and fire, all they could feel was heat worse than the desert’s.
Then it was over. The gibdoes collapsed into collectable remains. There was no more danger of untimely demise. Link made a noise of relief. I thought those things were seriously invincible for a second there, he signed. Zelda let out a breathless laugh.
“Yeah, so did I. C’mon, let’s get out of here before more arrive. We’ve only got so many electrical items.”
