Strawberry Starburst (2013)

Summary:

November 15, 2013. Lindbergh High School, Retroville, Texas

Nick and Sheen help Jimmy realize he's taking the hall monitor job too seriously.

Work Text:

The news of Chuck Lester’s sudden move to Greece ripples through Retroville High via a flurry of vibrating iPhones and hurried whispers, leaving a power vacuum that exactly zero people are eager to fill. Principal Willoughby, clutching a reusable Starbucks cup and looking like he’s one bad day away from a permanent sabbatical, stands before the school’s digital registry on a cold Monday morning. With a theatrical swipe of his finger on a tablet, he initiates a "randomized selection algorithm." The name that flashes on the screen in bright, pixelated Helvetica is James Isaac Neutron.

By the time the first bell rings on Monday, Jimmy is stationed at the intersection of the STEM wing and the cafeteria. His posture is unnaturally rigid, and he wears the neon-orange hall monitor sash over his slim-fit hoodie like a piece of high-tech tactical gear. To Jimmy, this isn’t just about enforcing the student handbook; it’s a biological imperative to restore order to a sophomore year that has felt increasingly chaotic and chemically imbalanced. Carl hovers exactly three inches behind Jimmy’s left shoulder, looking like he’s stepped out of a high-anxiety indie film. He’s clutching an iPad with white-knuckled intensity, his screen open to a spreadsheet of student infractions.

"Jimmy, I’m pretty sure that freshman’s earbuds are at a decibel level that violates the local noise ordinance," Carl whispers, his voice trembling. "If he gets tinnitus on our watch, that’s a lawsuit, right? Section eight of the district liability waiver?" Carl is acting less like a friend and more like a terrified paralegal, his breathing shallow behind his thick, hipster-adjacent spectacles.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Sheen is treating the hallway like a Vine-ready obstacle course. He sprints past Jimmy, shouting a trending meme at the top of his lungs, and skids to a halt while wearing a limited-edition Ultra Lord snapback.

"Citizen Neutron! Witness me! I am the Harbinger of Chaos!" Sheen’s eyes dance with a manic energy, testing the structural integrity of Jimmy’s patience.

Jimmy doesn’t crack a smile; he merely pulls a stylus from his pocket and logs the disturbance with a mechanical, cold precision that unsettles even the passing faculty.

By Thursday, November 14, the atmosphere in the detention hall is suffocating. The room is at maximum capacity, filled with students whose only crimes were checking their Instagrams ten seconds after the bell or possessing "distracting" neon shoelaces. The air smells like industrial floor cleaner and teenage resentment. Cindy stands in the doorway, her arms crossed over her varsity jacket, tapping a studded boot against the linoleum. She watches Jimmy pace the front of the room like a Silicon Valley CEO gone rogue.

"You’re pathetic, Neutron," she says, her voice echoing with a sharp, moral clarity. "Look at this place. You’ve turned the school into a police state because you’re too chicken to deal with your own head."

Jimmy stops, his back to her. "I am optimizing the educational environment, Vortex."

"No," Cindy counters, stepping into his personal space. "You’re using these rules as a firewall. You’re so scared of feeling something—anything—that you’re trying to micromanage the entire student body into submission. It’s authoritarian, and honestly? It’s a major fail for everyone’s sanity."

Behind her, Libby is already moving, her headphones draped around her neck. She doesn't say a word, but she catches the eyes of the other students. With a subtle nod to Cindy, she begins to orchestrate a "hallway intervention." They don't leave; they simply surround Jimmy in a loose circle, forcing him to look at the real people behind the digital infractions.

Friday morning arrives with a frost on the windows and a palpable tension. The warning bell rings—a shrill, digital chime. Jimmy is at his post, his face a mask of stoic duty, when he hears the rhythmic clack-thrum of wheels on tile. Nick rounds the corner on his longboard, leaning into a carve that is effortlessly cool. He wears a denim jacket with the collar popped just so, his hair perfectly styled with a pomade that defies gravity. Jimmy’s hand goes to his pocket, pulling out his device to log the violation before Nick even comes to a stop.

"Longboarding in a restricted zone, Nick," Jimmy says, though his voice wavers a fraction of a decibel. "That’s a level-one infraction."

Nick pops the board up into his hand with a casual flick. He doesn't look annoyed. Instead, he steps closer, invading Jimmy’s space with a scent of peppermint and expensive cologne. He tilts his head, a slow, devastating smirk spreading across his face. "Relax, Neutron," Nick says, his voice dropping to a low, melodic register. "You look kind of cute with a badge. Very... 'boss' of you."

Jimmy’s brain effectively short-circuits. The logical pathways that govern his speech and motor functions experience a catastrophic brownout. He stares at Nick, the orange sash suddenly feeling like it’s glowing at a thousand degrees. His mouth opens, but only a faint, static-like sound escapes.

Behind the cool, hooded gaze and the practiced tilt of his chin, Nick’s heart is hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He’s spent three years perfecting this "untouchable" persona, but staring into Jimmy's wide, frozen eyes, the mask feels paper-thin. Say something, Nick thinks, his palms beginning to sweat against the grip tape of his board. Literally anything. Call me an idiot. Give me the detention. Just don't let the silence stay this loud.

Every second that passes without a response feels like a localized tectonic shift. Nick keeps his smirk locked in place, but internally, he’s screaming. He’s just put himself on a limb, used a word like 'cute' in a hallway full of people, and Jimmy is looking at him like he’s a particularly complex math problem he can't solve. The panic is a cold weight in Nick's stomach; he’s terrified he’s just blown his cover and his friendship in one breath. He considers making a joke, something about the lighting or the sash being 'so last season,' but his throat feels like it’s been lined with sandpaper. He just stares back, desperate to maintain the illusion of confidence while his internal monologue is a frantic loop of Abort, abort, abort.

Carl looks between them, his eyes darting back and forth. "Jimmy? Your face is turning the color of a Strawberry Starburst," Carl notes, genuinely concerned about his friend's sudden, violent blush.

Nick doesn't move, though the corners of his eyes twitch with suppressed anxiety. He simply stands there, his cool gaze fixed on Jimmy, awaiting the detention notification as if it were a DM he’d been expecting. The silence is heavy, pregnant with a subtext that Jimmy isn't prepared to peer-review.

Suddenly, the tension is shattered by a wet, whirring sound. Sheen bursts from a nearby locker, two cans of Silly String held aloft like twin blasters. "ULTRA-TOTAL-DESTRUCTION!" he bellows, dousing the entire group in neon-pink foam. It’s a flagrant violation of the aerosol ban and the "no-go" locker policy.

The pink strands drape over Jimmy’s sash and Nick’s denim jacket. The absurdity of the moment acts as a cooling agent for Jimmy’s overheated processors. He looks at the mess, then at Cindy, who is watching with an "I told you so" expression, and finally back to Nick. Nick feels a wave of dizzying relief wash over him—Sheen's chaos is a godsend, a literal smoke screen for the terrifying intimacy of the last thirty seconds.

Jimmy realizes Cindy was right. This isn’t about the rules; it’s about his desperate need for a controlled environment to compensate for the internal chaos of his own growing pains. He’s been trying to solve his emotions like a physics equation, and it’s failing. Jimmy lets out a sharp, genuine breath of air—a sound that's almost a laugh. He reaches out and playfully slaps Sheen’s back, sending a cloud of pink foam flying.

"You’re a menace, Sheen," he says, his voice finally returning to its natural, boyish tone.

He turns to Nick and, with a steady hand, deletes the pending infraction on his screen. "I'm sorry, Nick. I think... I think I was trying to find a method for something that doesn't actually have a formula."

Nick’s smirk softens into a real smile, the panicked thudding in his chest finally slowing down. "It's chill, Neutron. See ya around."

He tosses his board down and rolls away, leaving Jimmy standing there, feeling lighter than he has all week. Carl lets out a massive, shuddering sigh of relief. His knees buckle, and he sags backward into Sheen’s arms. Sheen catches him, still wearing his snapback, as the two of them become a heap of tangled limbs and Silly String on the hallway floor.
