Chapter Text
It was a cold night in Death City when the last bus of the night pulled in. On it a mother, and her two daughters. One, named Elizabeth, called Liz was only 3 years old, and was pretty healthy. The other one, named Patricia, called Patty was 6 months old, but she was very sick carrying the same disease her mom had. The mother, Ms. Thompson, was very ill. She had been sick for months, unable to get adequate health care, considering she had no insurance, and even with insurance the hospital bill would be through the roof.
So why did this mom go all the way to Death City? It is no better in terms of health care. However it had something, or rather someone who was her last hope. Lord Death. Ms. Thompson had no family besides Liz, or Patty and she didn’t want to put them in the foster care system, or even worse have them live on the streets.
If Lord Death would accept them, Ms. Thompson could die a happy woman, knowing her daughters would live a better life. So she went, and met with Lord Death. The details are unclear from there, only Liz, and Lord Death remember how that meeting went. In the end Liz, and her sister, Patty were taken in by Lord Death, and partly given Shinigami powers. However three lines didn’t split well between 2 people, so Lord Death made another kid. Death the Kid to be more specific.
With these three he assigned them each different jobs. Liz is off having meetings Lord Death can’t attend to, due to him attaching his soul to Death City. Death the Kid goes off to kill any kishin egg that is too powerful for DWMA students. And Patty…she gets to hang around the DWMA, and occasionally do some not so important paper work for Lord Death.
Liz, and Kid walk into the Death Room. Patty turns her spinning chair towards them, she smiles brightly “Hey hi hello guys!” Patty cheerily greets them, “Greetings Patty, do you happen to know where father is?” Kid asks curiously, “He’s giving a lecture in a classroom today. He’s been super stressed lately.” Patty says, “Why?” Liz asks sharply, “I dunno.” Patty shrugs, and spins some more in her chair. Kid sighs, and pulls up a chair for himself, and Liz.
Liz side eyes Kid, not amused by his kindness. She’s jealous of him, he gets to go fight kishin eggs while she has to sit in stuffy meetings all day. Kid smiles at Liz, hoping his sister will finally smile back at him. But she doesn’t, turning her attention back to Patty. Kid turns his attention to Patty spinning as well, they both can’t help but laugh at her childish antics. “How naive she is.” They both think fondly, both of them were somewhat glad at least one sibling was living a happy life.
Patty senses them staring, and stops. She looks at them confused “Why are they staring? They’re in a good mood too, but why…? Oh I know! They want to talk to me!” Patty cheerfully thinks. “Why don’t you guys tell me about your missions!” Patty suggests, Liz smiles offering to go first “My mission was nothing fun, just sitting in a board room discussing how much funding the school should get.” Liz replies, “Well? What happened to the budget?” Patty asks curiously, “It’s none of your concern.” Liz says feeling the numbers of it all would stress Patty out.
Patty internally sighs, but still wears a smile on her face. “What about you Kid?” Patty asks, “My mission wasn’t very fun either. It’s not easy to fight something with your bare hands…” Kid sighs, “Did you see anything cool coming back?” Patty asks curiously, “I did see a skate park, but as per usual the kids there didn’t like me.” Kid chuckles trying to play off his rejection as something funny. Liz glares at Kid, feeling Patty shouldn’t have to hear their grievances. “I don’t get why you even get those missions. I’m a gun, and have more social experience than you.” Liz saltily tells Kid, “I do wish we could trade.” Kid agrees with her.
Patty takes this information in. She knew Liz despite bragging about being a gun, has no fighting experience, and Kid has no social experience. “If only there were a way to combine the two…” Patty thinks to herself, “Oh I know! You guys should join the DWMA!” Patty suggests. “What…?” Both Liz, and Kid ask. Patty jumps out of her seat, more than satisfied with her solution “Yeah! This school is a mix of fighting, and socializing! If both of you are in it, you’ll both get what you want!” Patty exclaims. Liz, and Kid weren’t too on board with this idea.
“That’s a brilliant idea Patty, but I-” Kid starts, but gets cut off “I know right? The only thing that would make it even more “brilliant” as you say, would be if I went too!...Wait! I’ll just go too! It’ll be just the three of us!” Patty adds on to her idea, spiraling into possibilities,
“If I go with them, I can be their tour guide around the school. I know it like the back of my hand! This will be so fun!” Patty thinks to herself. Kid, and Liz give each other a guilty look. They don’t want to reject Patty’s idea, but it was near impossible to do. They have people to meet, and kishin eggs to collect. As Liz was going to try and let Patty down kindly, Lord Death came in.
“Hey! Hi! Hello!” He greets them with a bright smile. Before anyone can speak more, Patty starts to talk. “Dad! I had the best idea!” Patty tells Death. “Oh? What’s your idea?” He asks Patty curiously, “What if me, Kid, and Liz went to school?” Patty asks, her eyes lighting up, “Oh…um…why would we do that…?” Death asks nervously.
Patty’s eyes start to not sparkle as much, seeing her dad isn’t as on board as she thought he would be. “Both Liz, and Kid are unhappy with their jobs. If they go to the DWMA they’ll both get something out of it! And-and I’ll be there to guide them around!” Patty argues unconfidently, “Oh? Is this true?” Death asks, looking at Kid and Liz with confusion. “N-no!” They both reply. They didn’t want Death thinking they were rejecting him, and his offer for them to Shinigami's.
Lord Death sighs, sensing they weren’t happy. “I…I need some time to think.” Death replies, as if given the choice to either sacrifice all his children or save the world. “Trust me father, we’re perfectly content in our positions now!” Kid tries to reassure Death. Death sent everyone out of the Death Room while he pondered this decision.
For once Death was happy Spirit was out at a hostess club, and not in the Death Room. Lord Death stares at his own reflection in the mirror. He didn’t want history to repeat itself, however if he left them unhappy, or sent them to school he feared the results would be the same. Fear is the last thing he wanted to feel at the moment, it reminded him too much of his fear hidden in the basement.
