Work Text:
There is this boy, he’s tall, handsome, and kind. He has dark brown hair, the type that turns golden in the sunlight, and these bright blue eyes that shine in the dark. His name is Chris, he’s 16, and he is my best friend. Our mothers are best friends, so we grew up spending all of our time together, we've been friends since birth. We do everything together, we even live on the same street.
My name is Felicity, and I am 16, just like Chris. I am quite the opposite of Chris, I have long blonde hair, and light brown eyes, and I am definitely not as tall as Chris. The thing is, everybody thinks me and Chris have some sort of love story going on, but it's not like that, we are simply just friends, and always have been…or so I think.
Today is the first day of year 11. Like usual, I rush out of the house and straight in front of Chris’s house. I knock on the door, waiting for him to come out. Every day, me and Chris walk to school together, it’s a routine, I wait for him, and then we leave. Chris opens the door with a huge, but tired smile.
“I’m ready. Let's go.”
He says, stepping out onto the lawn, both of us making our way to school. As we approach school, we see many people heading into the gates, me and Chris follow along. We get everything sorted, like our lockers, books, and then we head off to our homeroom for the first lesson.
“We’re in the same class!”
I exclaim, excited to be with Chris. He chuckles as we make our way into the crowded classroom, teenagers scattered everywhere. As we sit down at our desks, a slightly older boy approaches us, he looks over at Chris.
“Are you Chris?”
The boy asks, looking at him. Chris responds right away.
“Yes, that’s me.”
The older boy smiles slightly, relieved he’s found the right person. He speaks up.
“I’m Han, the captain of the soccer team. Practice is being held on Mondays and Thursdays, I’ll see you on the field after school. Ok?”
Chris nods.
“Yep, I’ll be there.”
With that, Han starts walking away, and out of the classroom. I look at Chris confused.
“The soccer team? Since when did you sign up for soccer?”
“My mum wanted me to, she said since I'm good at soccer, I may as well play on the team…”
Chris replies, the slightest tone of guilt in his voice. I was a bit hurt by the fact he hadn’t told me earlier, but I don't bring it up. The rest of the day goes pretty well, me and Chris spend the time together as usual, but after school, Chris immediately gets dragged out by his teammates, leaving before I can say bye. I sigh and begin walking home, I hope Chris doesn’t get too busy with soccer, then im alone, a lot.
The next week, the same thing happens, but it gets worse. Now, he sits with his teammates at lunch, he spends his afternoons with them, they even came over to his house last night, something about watching the grand finals in soccer. Today, I enter my classroom, only to see Chris packing up his stuff, so I approach him.
“Where are you going? Class hasn’t even started yet.”
Chris looks at me, he scratches his neck sheepily, and lets out a reply.
“Yeah um, I’m switching home rooms. All my teammates are in a different one, so I'm gonna join them.”
My head lowers as I hear the words come out of his mouth, disappointment crossing my face.
“Oh, ok…I guess ill see you around then.”
Chris nods and heads out the door. The rest of the day went by, and none of it was fun. I was alone all day, while Chris was hanging out with all of his sports friends. On the walk home, I can't help but get anxious about it.
‘Did I do something? Is that why he's being distant with me?’
I think, several thoughts swirling around my brain, waiting to be answered.
2 weeks later, reality had hit me. He doesn’t want to hang around me anymore, he has other friends, and I need to support that. On my way home from another slow and boring day at school, I hear a very recognizable voice call out as I step into my front lawn. It's Chris.
“Felicity! Wait up.”
I stop walking as I see Chris jogging over to me, his brown hair bouncing slightly off his head as he takes a step. He stops in front of me, he takes a deep breath before looking down at me, preparing to talk.
“I’m sorry…I’m sorry for just leaving like that. I was your only friend and I left you. I just thought, maybe if I made more friends, I would be more popular, but I realized I was wrong, I don’t want other friends if you aren’t the one I look forward to being with the most.”
I look up at him, a slight smile forming on my face.
“It's fine I-.”
Chris cuts me off.
“Its not. I understand if you don’t want to give me a second chance, but I would love it if you do. I promise I won't ever leave you again. I would love to be your best friend again…or more…”
Chris’s words slip out softly. I look up at him, multiple emotions going through me, confusion, shock, happiness.
“What do you mean by, ‘or more’?”
I say, my hands fiddling by my side nervously. Chris looks me into my eyes, his blue eyes shining in the sunlight.
“I like you. I have for a long time. I thought maybe if I was good at soccer, it would impress you, but then I lost the best thing that ever happened to me, you. I’ve held onto my feelings for too long, I needed to tell you.”
