History of FlopTok

Summary:

This is a work imported from a script I wrote in Google Docs, and imported to Archive of our Own.

Work Text:

FlopTok is a TikTok genre where people use Stan Twitter clips with absurd and relatable captions, which was a huge community. FlopTok also has their icons such as Jiafei, CupcakKe, Trisha Paytas, Lovely Peaches, and others. In this video, we will explore the history of the FlopTok community from the origins to the present. Without further ado, let’s begin.

CupcakKe Remixes

This is the true origin of FlopTok, which was started in 2016 with a video of Dora the Explorer theme song with Cupcakke’s vocals edited on the theme song’s instrumental. The video was created by CupcakKe Remixes, the first known CupcakKe remix channel on YouTube, which then goes on TikTok in c. 2020 with challenges about trying not to laugh. Ranvision now goes on CupcakKe remixing music instead of making mashups, which he created thousands of those song remixes, which he also has a TikTok account creating the FlopTok remix format.

Stan Twitter

This is a community of people posting opinions about pop culture, which the word “stan” derived from the words “stalker” and “fan”, which was from Eminem's song “Stan” released in 2000. This was the origin of FlopTok memes.

FlopTok’s Debut

In late 2019 or early 2020, the first FlopTok video including the hashtag of #floptok is of Lovely Peaches laughing with the caption that said “me after posting i hate nicki to use as a custom vibrator”.

Jiafei Sexy Products, Bots, and Remixes

Many bot accounts stole thousands of short-form product advertisements in China, and put it on a bot account, with random woman as the profile picture, but one instance has the infamous “Jiafei” photo, which was Dai Kaiyan, with a filter applied, taking a selfie on a balcony in Sanya. The song “Ye Hua Xiang” was also associated with Jiafei accounts. Many people examined the image and theorized that it was two members from Miss A “Jia” and “Fei” combined with photo manipulation or deepfakes to create the image, which then later revealed that the girl is Dai Kaiyan, a Chinese woman who posted herself with her song being associated with Dai, and remixing it.

Girl Yes comments and other NSFW things

The Girl Yes comments are referring to people who share absurd things with very weird content in it, accompanied by emojis. Girl Yes comments were popular during that day of FlopTok, which was used for shock value, similar to shock sites. Twitter links were also associated with Girl Yes comments, which users shared links to inappropriate adult videos, fetish videos, shock videos, and others for shock value. The infamous Twitter link leads you to the Perverse Family’s “Haunted House” video, which wasn’t a horror movie, but rather a fetish movie.

March 7th

In 2022, TikTok announced that they will update the community guidelines, in which all FlopTokers created memorial posts about the FlopTok community, but later than that, nothing happened and FlopTok is still active.

Badussy War

The Badussy War is a fictional war which this format started at sometime around early to mid-2022, with FlopTokers doctoring images of soldiers to have Stan Twitter/FlopTok icon’s faces on it, including war images. The war is said that it was a conflict between Da Boyz and FlopTok.

Floptropica

Ah yes, the land of Flops. This was introduced when a TikTok user posted a GoFundMe page to buy a private island in Chile, which accompanied by a Stan Twitter video of people being confused, with the caption said “omg flops this is a private island in chile for sale if all flops donate 1$ [sic] we can buy floptropica”, which the name Floptropica derived from the word “Flop”, a synonym for failure, and the name “Poptropica” which is an online browser game. Floptropica then paved the way to FlopTok in 2023 until today.

Companies of Floptropica

Many FlopTokers parodied real companies, which the first company FlopTokers parodied is the American multinational fast food chain “McDonald’s” which was parodied to be “FlopDonald’s”. Other companies that are parodied are Samsung, Subaru, Toys “R” Us, 48 Group, 24 Oras from GMA Network, OPPO, and others, which other companies are not parodies but rather FlopTok-oriented companies, which sometimes are parodies such as Floptropican Network, FlopCare, Air Flopcian, and Me, The FlopTok Network.

Purple Heart memes

Those were the era where exotic FlopTok memes popped up, which originated from Donatella Versace commenting her name but the last word was capitalized, and a purple heart after the capitalized word. Many memes like Ellie and Mason House, Mama a girl behind you, Onika burgers, and others were associated with Purple Heart memes.

The Current FlopTok

Now, FlopTok is a source for bizarre, weird, absurd, relatable, and funny content which is all available mainly on TikTok, with compilations on YouTube using FlopToks from TikTokers. FlopTok has new meme formats on each period of time, which the current format when writing is the Rebecca’s Chinese Takeaway format, where people uses her clips of her cooking food, altered to have bizarre and weird captions, which other icons were associated with the Rebecca's Chinese format are Brandy Nitti, Lily Tino, Bonnie Blue, Sabrina Carpenter, and others including a FlopTok icon Lovely Peaches, which the format uses all music in the hyperpop genre.

CupcakKe remixes now evolved to a new level, which from the usual tuned/untuned remixes created by professional remixers, some content creators, which was mainly relatable FlopTokers creates CupcakKe remixes with a lot of moaning, references to gay sexuality, reverbed vocals, loud parts at the end, uses of slapping, weird tuning, mostly by pitch shifting instead of tuning vocals perfectly with tuning software such as Melodyne, off-pitch CupcakKe vocals, including the songs that the person remixing was mashed-up to other songs, and weird off-pitch harmonization.

Also, Floptropica is now evolving, including some FlopToks uses AI to generate what Floptropica’s looks are, which in reality, it was an island filled with trees, which was bought by the Rewild organization in 2025. Some FlopTokers think that the poor side of the nation is the opposite, which was all rich, with people making jokes about it which was like “My house is massive, it can hold the amount of Boeing 747s up to 20”.

And that’s it for the history of FlopTok. Thank you for watching, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and Stan Loona.
