Work Text:
The room buzzed with noise.
Voices overlapped, stylists called out for touch-ups, fabric shifted and rustled like restless wings.
Someone laughed too loudly near the mirrors, the sharp click of heels cutting across the floor in hurried patterns.
It was everything it was supposed to be, electric, alive, the kind of chaos Jungkook had missed so much it used to ache.
And now it didn’t feel like enough.
He sat still while someone dabbed powder along his jaw, fingers tilting his chin up with practiced ease.
“Don’t move”, they murmured, and he listened.
“Five minutes”, a voice called from somewhere behind him.
Five minutes until they stepped back into the spotlight.
Five minutes until the roar swallowed everything else whole.
Jungkook watched himself in the mirror.
Perfect. Smiling, if he wanted to.
He wondered, distractly, if anyone could tell the difference anymore.
“Hyung, you good?”
He blinked, the question landing a second too late. One of the staff members met his eyes through the reflection, waiting. Jungkook nodded automatically, the motion smooth, convincing.
“Yeah,” he said. “I’m ok.”
He’d gotten very good at that.
A ripple of movement passed behind him, familiar voices, low and easy, belonging to people who knew each other too well to need volume. Jungkook didn’t turn. He didn’t have to.
He felt it anyway, among them.
That quiet, instinctive pull, like something in him always knew where to look, even when he didn’t allow himself to.
Don’t.
The word surfaced on its own, worn thin from repetition. Not his voice. Never his.
It came from clipped conversations in glass-walled offices. From cold, business smiles that didn’t reach the eyes. From phrases dressed as concern and delivered like rules.
Not now.
Not this week.
Not where anyone can see.
You know what’s at stake.
As if he could forget.
His jaw tightened just slightly as the memory brushed past, another, more irritating instruction layered over the rest.
Stay separate before the show.
Be seen elsewhere.
We’ll arrange it if needed.
He almost laughed at that. Almost.
Instead, he let his gaze slip across the room.
There he was.
Taehyung stood half-turned, a stylist adjusting the collar of his jacket, dark hair falling just enough to shadow his eyes. He looked calm. Effortlessly beautiful.
Like the storm of voices and movement simply parted around him instead of touching him.
Jungkook’s chest tightened before he could stop it.
It wasn’t dramatic, it never was. Just that small, familiar pressure, low and persistent, like something pressing against his ribs from the inside, asking, asking, asking.
Their eyes met, he looked away first.
“Jungkook-ah-lip balm.”
He tilted his head back slightly, obedient again, letting someone swipe a soft sheen across his lips. The scent was faintly sweet, it made his stomach turn.
Don’t look.
He focused on the mirror instead. On the version of himself everyone else saw.
Golden maknae.
Back on stage. Happy.
God, he was happy.
That was the problem.
It sat inside him, bright and full and almost unbearable, this overwhelming, aching kind of happiness that had nowhere to go.
Not when every glance had to be measured, every step calculated, every moment filtered through invisible lines he wasn’t allowed to cross.
Not when loving someone felt like something that had to be…edited.
“Two minutes!”
The room shifted again, painted in urgency. People moved faster. Voices rose. Someone brushed past him, apologizing quickly.
Jungkook stood.
His hands felt steady. That was new. Or maybe he’d just learned how to ignore the tremor.
Movement behind him. Slightly too close.
Taehyung passed by as if he had somewhere to be, stride easy, unhurried.
The back of his fingers brushed against Jungkook’s wrist.
Soft. Quick. Barely there.
And yet, enough.
Jungkook’s breath caught before he could stop it, sharp and sudden, like his body had betrayed him.
Taehyung didn’t stop walking.
But murmured at him just as he passed, just low enough to be swallowed by the noise.
“Careful.”
It was almost nothing. A warning, maybe. Or something pretending to be one.
Jungkook turned, just slightly.
“Tae-”
Too late.
Taehyung was already a step ahead, already out of reach, already slipping back into place like it had never happened.
Like they were exactly what they were supposed to be in front of all these strangers and nothing more.
Careful.
He swallowed, the word settling somewhere deep.
As if he hadn’t been careful for years.
As if careful hadn’t started to feel like suffocating.
“Positions, please!”
The spell snapped suddenly. Staff ushered them forward, the world rushing back in all at once.
Lights. Cues. Timing.
Jungkook stepped into place like he always did, like nothing was inevitably, quietly shattering somewhere inside his chest.
He flexed his fingers once, then let them fall at his sides.
Five seconds.
Four.
Three.
He closed his eyes, just for a breath.
And somewhere behind the roar waiting to welcome them back, behind the music, behind the purple wave of lights, there was only one thought left, sharp and impossible to ignore.
How much longer can I pretend this is enough?
-------------
The music hit like a pulse through his veins.
Flashing lights blinding, endless.
The crowd, louder than memory, louder than anything.
Jungkook couldn’t hear himself think.
And for a while, he didn’t need to.
His body moved on instinct, muscle memory carrying him through every step, every turn, every note. The stage felt so right under his feet, solid, familiar, like something he had been reaching for without realizing how far away it had gotten.
This.
This was what he had missed.
The roar surged again, and he grinned without thinking, breathless, alive in a way that almost made his eyes shed a tear.
For a few minutes, it was enough.
Maybe more than enough.
Maybe...
The song ended in a crash of beats and confetti, the final notes echoing out into the starry night as the members moved into position for the next transition.
Cheers followed them, relentless, clinging, a neverending fan chant.
Jungkook bowed, automatic, before stepping back, letting the shift happen around him.
Another member’s solo song began.
It gave him an out.
He took it.
The second he crossed past the edge of the lights, the sound dulled. Not gone, never gone, but distant now, like it belonged to another world just a few steps away.
The heat of the stage dropped, replaced by the cooler air backstage, thick with movement and shadows and staff speaking in low, urgent tones.
Jungkook exhaled.
He hadn’t realized how hard he’d been holding his breath.
“Water...”
Someone pressed a bottle into his hand. He nodded in thanks, unscrewing it quickly, the plastic crack sharp in the quieter space. He took a long drink, the coolness grounding, dragging him back into himself piece by piece.
“You’re good for the next set,” a staff member said, glancing at a tablet. “Two songs.”
“Got it.”
His voice came out steady and polite.
He leaned back against the wall, rolling his shoulders once, trying to shake off the lingering energy still sizzling under his skin.
It didn’t go away. If anything, it spread restless, searching, like it needed somewhere else to land.
His gaze drifted.
He shouldn’t have been surprised.
Taehyung stood just a few meters away, half-hidden in the dimmer light, watching the stage. Waiting for his cue, probably.
Or...
Jungkook’s grip tightened slightly around the bottle, the memory of earlier flashing through him. The brush of fingers. The quiet careful.
It sat so wrong.
On stage, everything had felt bigger. Louder. Truer. Free.
Here, it felt smaller, constrained.
Like stepping out of the light meant stepping back into something he no longer fit inside.
Taehyung shifted, just slightly, and their eyes met.
It shouldn’t have felt like impact.
Not after all these years.
Not after learning each other in fragments and glances, in reflections caught in mirrors, in the space between cameras.
Not after shared hoodies showing up in the wrong places, after headlines that never quite said anything but always said enough.
Not after that split second at the airport, hands overlapping on the same camera, staff too slow to pull them apart before the moment was already everywhere.
It should have been easy.
It always had been.
For a second, neither of them moved.
The music from the stage carried faintly between them, Jimin's voice steady, filling the space they couldn’t.
Jungkook pushed himself off the wall before he could think too much about it.
He crossed the distance.
It wasn’t far and yet, it felt like it.
Taehyung’s gaze flickered the moment he got closer, checking.
A quick glance over Jungkook’s shoulder, toward the staff, toward the open edge of the stage.
Not avoidance, never.
Caution.
That was worse.
And awareness.
Like he was holding too many things at once.
Jungkook stopped just short of him.
Close enough.
Not enough.
“You okay?” Taehyung asked quietly.
There was something warm in it, familiar, instinctive, just slightly threaded with something else. Something heavier.
Jungkook let out a breath that almost sounded like a laugh.
“Yeah”, he said. Then, softer, “No.”
That was all it took.
Taehyung moved immediately, no hesitation this time, no thinking. His hand came up like it always did, fingers brushing briefly against Jungkook’s arm, grounding, there and real and his...
...and then gone.
Not snatched away. Not panicked, just, shortened. Like the moment had been cut in half before it could fully exist.
Jungkook felt it anyway.
Of course he did.
It lingered like it always had.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“Kook-”
“They told me to go out again last night.”
It came out abruptly, low and tight, like he hadn’t meant to say it at all.
Taehyung stilled. “I know.”
There it was again, that shared understanding that had always been there between them. No explanations needed. No details required.
“I’m tired”, Jungkook admitted, quieter now. So painfully true.
“Of pretending I’m somewhere else. With someone else. Like this,” he gestured vaguely, toward the stage, toward everything, towards the distance between them “isn’t the only place I want to be.”
Taehyung’s jaw tightened slightly.
Not at him, no.
At it.
At all of it.
“They’re just trying to keep things from getting out of hand”, he said, but there was no real weight behind it. Just something he felt like he was supposed to say.
Jungkook shook his head.
“You never cared before. And I don’t want to care about that right now.”
His voice softened, something more fragile slipping through.
“I just…I wish I could be here with you. Properly, I mean.”
That landed differently.
Taehyung’s expression shifted, something in it cracking just slightly, not breaking, not falling apart yet, just giving under the pressure.
Because he understood.
Because he wanted the same thing.
Because he always had.
His hand moved again, barely noticeable this time, fingers caressing Jungkook’s forearm, slower, more deliberate.
Staying there a second longer.
Like he was letting himself have at least this much.
Jungkook’s breath caught.
There he was.
Still him.
Always him.
And that, that was what hurt.
Not distance.
Not absence.
But the fact that even this, even something so small, had to be measured now. Limited. Held back in pieces.
“They’re scared”, Taehyung said quietly.
Jungkook looked at him.
“Of what?”
Taehyung held his gaze.
And for a second, it was all there, everything they weren’t saying, everything they had been avoiding for years, suddenly too close to ignore.
What if loving you destroys everything we built?
It sat between them.
Heavy. Too real to wave away.
“Thirty seconds!” someone called from further back.
The moment fractured.
Taehyung exhaled softly, his hand slipping away.
Not because he wanted to, but because he had to.
“We’ll talk after”, he said, quieter now.
Jungkook nodded.
“Yeah”, he said. “After.”
It didn’t feel like avoidance.
It felt like something waiting.
Something building.
Taehyung gave him one last look, soft, present, loving.
Then turned, heading back toward the stage, toward the role they had to play.
Jungkook stayed where he was for a second longer.
His forearm still warm.
His chest tight for a completely different reason now.
The crowd surged again, louder, pulling him forward whether he was ready or not.
He straightened, rolling his shoulders back, forcing his breathing to steady.
Time to go back.
Time to be who he was supposed to be.
He stepped toward the stairs.
But this time, the adrenaline didn’t settle.
It burned.
--------------
The last beat landed clean.
Perfect, sharp, exactly where it was supposed to be. Jungkook felt it through his entire body, the controlled stop, the precise breath, the way everything locked into place just like it had a hundred times in rehearsal.
The crowd exploded instantly.
Cheers crashed over the stage, loud and endless, filling every space the music left behind. For a moment, everything held, formation intact, bodies still, lights burning down on them as if nothing had changed at all over the past 4 years.
Professional. Untouchable.
Right on cue, the formation loosened. Hobi picked up the mic with an easy laugh, slipping into casual talk with the crowd, letting the energy soften and stretch into something lighter.
A fabricated breath they were supposed to take.
Jungkook tried to follow it.
He adjusted his stance like he was meant to, letting his shoulders drop just slightly, lifting his gaze toward the audience, nodding at something said into the mic. Everything about him still looked right.
But the adrenaline hadn’t settled yet.
It sat under his skin, restless, coiled too tight, with nowhere to go.
And then he felt it again, that pull.
Immediate. Impossible to ignore.
He didn’t even try to fight it.
He looked.
Taehyung was already there.
Watching him.
Not smiling, not leaning into the moment the way they always did for the cameras, not turning it into something easy or playful.
Just there.
Jungkook’s breath stuttered slightly, barely noticeable, his body still perfectly composed even as something inside him swirled, quietly but completely.
They had done this a thousand times.
Stolen glances across the stage, stretched eye contact just long enough to make it fun, to make it mean something for them without ever meaning too much.
They had built a whole language out of it, shared winks, laughter hidden in plain sight, closeness that could always be explained away.
Safe.
But this wasn’t safe.
Taehyung didn’t look away.
And Jungkook didn’t either.
The noise of the crowd swelled around them, Hobi’s voice carrying easily through it, but it all blurred at the edges, like it didn’t quite reach where they were standing.
They were still in formation.
Still exactly where they were supposed to be.
Except now, they weren’t.
Jungkook shifted first.
It was subtle enough to pass as repositioning, just a small adjustment of his stance, the kind no one would question. Controlled and natural.
But it wasn’t part of the script.
Taehyung noticed immediately.
Jungkook saw it in the flicker of his eyes, in the way his attention sharpened, catching the change for what it was.
And then, he moved too.
Just as small. Just as deliberate.
Closing the space between them by a fraction.
They had done this before as well, more times than they could count, crossing paths too closely, shoulders brushing, leaning in just enough to blur the line between performance and something else. Sitting side by side, arms thrown around each other, fingers lingering just a second too long under the excuse of familiarity.
Easy. Justifiable.
This wasn’t that.
There was no exaggeration in it, no playfulness to soften the edges, no performance layered over the moment to make it harmless.
Another step.
Another step.
And suddenly, they were close.
Too close for something unplanned, too still for something that was supposed to be casual.
Jungkook could hear his own heartbeat now, drumming and loud, grounding him in a way nothing else had all night.
Taehyung’s lips parted slightly, not into a smile, but like he was about to say something and couldn’t quite find the words.
The crowd reacted, louder now, frantic, picking up on the shift without understanding it.
Still, the talking continued.
Still, the moment wasn’t interrupted.
Except, someone noticed.
A few steps away, Namjoon’s laughter softened just slightly as his gaze flicked over. At first, it read as something familiar, of course it did.
They were close all the time, always had been. It was part of what people expected, part of what made it easy to overlook the reality and the depth of it.
It should have been nothing.
Except they didn’t break the moment.
They didn’t soften it.
They didn’t turn it into something playful, something safe, something the cameras could frame and move past.
They just stayed there, looking at each other like the rest of the world had quietly fallen away.
Namjoon’s expression shifted.
Not panic, not yet at least, but something in it tightened, awareness settling in as he watched a second longer than necessary, his eyes moving between them again, slower this time.
Reading.
Understanding.
But Jungkook didn’t look away.
He couldn’t.
Because now he wasn’t seeing the stage, or the lights, or the thousands of thousands of people watching them.
He was just seeing Taehyung.
Not V. Not the version shaped for the world.
Just him.
A little breathless, a little undone, still holding himself together, still almost exactly where he was supposed to be, but not hiding.
Not from him.
And suddenly, that was all Jungkook could feel.
All the years, all the almosts, all the written rules and careful boundaries, all the not here, not now, not like this that hat had been forced into them, pressing up at once, too much to keep contained any longer.
His throat felt tight.
Taehyung didn’t move.
He just stayed there, steady and open, like he already knew, like he had been waiting for Jungkook to reach this point.
A second passed.
At the edge of it, Namjoon took a step closer, not enough to interrupt, but enough to be ready, something in his posture tightening.
Jungkook inhaled slowly.
The noise, the weight of everything they could lose, it all felt distant now, pushed to the edges by something far more immediate.
For the first time, it felt smaller.
Manageable.
Because right here, right now, this was bigger.
He leaned in slightly, closing what little space was left between them, his voice barely more than a breath when he spoke.
“I want to do it.”
Taehyung blinked.
Then his expression shifted, quick and instinctive, something bright and domestic flickering across his face as he let out a soft, breathy laugh, shoulders loosening just slightly.
“Wow”, he murmured under his breath, leaning in just a fraction, eyes crinkling with something almost incredulous, almost fond. “Jungkook…”
He huffed out another quiet laugh, like he couldn’t quite believe it, like the tension of the past days had twisted into something almost ridiculous in his mind.
“You’re insatiable.”
It came out easy, teasing, wrapped in that usual cuteness he always used to deflect.
For a heartbeat, it almost worked.
His smile lingered. Then faltered.
Because Jungkook didn’t laugh.
Didn’t roll his eyes, didn’t bump into him, didn’t play along the way he always did when Taehyung pulled them back from the edge.
He just looked at him, unmoving.
And suddenly, the joke had nowhere to land.
Taehyung’s breath caught, the last trace of amusement slipping from his face as his eyes searched Jungkook’s again, slower this time, more carefully.
Waiting for the punchline, for the shift, for the escape.
It didn’t come.
“Oh.”
The sound left him before he could stop it, barely there, more exhale than word.
Because now he saw it.
Not the kind of longing they had learned to joke about, to soften, to disguise.
This was something else entirely.
Jungkook didn’t look away, if anything, he stepped closer, erasing what little space remained between them.
His voice low, but unmistakably clear this time.
“I mean it.”
No teasing, zero room to misunderstand.
Taehyung stared at him and for a brief moment, everything flickered across his face at once.
The weight of it. The risk.
The very real possibility of everything breaking the second they crossed this line.
And beneath it, something that had never once wavered, no matter how many times they had been told to hide it.
His lips parted slightly, not in laughter, in choice.
Waiting to see if Jungkook would finally take the step they had both been circling for years.
Jungkook reached for him without hesitation, his hand grounding against Taehyung like he needed something real to hold onto.
And Taehyung met him halfway, just as instinctively, just as surely, definitely recklessly.
And then, they kissed.
Soft, at first.
Like something long-held finally allowed to exist, like something too precious to rush, even now with the whole world watching.
There was no performance in it, no angle turned for the cameras, no attempt to disguise it, no instinct to play it as a scripted gag.
He had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.
None of them felt like this.
Because this wasn’t desperate, or rushed, or fleeting. It was certain.
Jungkook held him there, steady, like he had already made peace with whatever would come next. Taehyung answered without pause, his fingers curling into Jungkook’s sleeve, holding on just as tightly, just as unwilling to let go.
Years of restraint didn’t shatter, they settled into this very moment.
Around them, the world surged back all at once, the roar of the crowd breaking into something almost deafening, movement at the edges of the stage, voices faltering, shifting, but it all felt distant, secondary, irrelevant.
When they finally pulled back, it was slow, their breaths still uneven, their foreheads nearly brushing as they stayed close, like stepping away completely wasn’t even an option anymore.
Taehyung let out a quiet breath, something almost like a laugh slipping through it, softer now, disbelieving in an entirely different way.
Then he smiled.
And Jungkook smiled back.
Whatever would come next, the noise, the consequences, the questions, the weight of everything they might have just changed, it could wait.
They hadn’t lost anything, not really.
If anything, for the first time since this all began,
they had stopped losing each other.
