Work Text:

Once upon a time a Princess stood with her head held high, eyes focused on her hopeless Knight as she approached the guillotine. Her beloved Knight watched in horror as her head rolled. The Knight was soon dragged to be hanged, thoughts blocking out the cheers of the crowd. Her heart raced, no way in hell her Princess was dead. How could this have happened. Can't we just have stayed together? This marked the end of a monarchy.

One second, she was putting her head through the noose, next, she was waking up next to her Princess. The Knight froze, blue eyes glued to the Princess in her arms. It was just a dream. She told herself. "My lady, it's time to get up." The nervousness in her voice faded with each word on. They ate, got dressed and ready for the day, before heading out to the garden for tea together.

"Oh dear.. My mother and father still plan on having the grand feast.." The Princess spoke aloud the same words she had before. The sun hit midday, and the feast began; the Knight scurried along with her Princess. "Mother! Father! You're going to anger the people more. They are out there starving while we feast in gold!" Her parents still did not heed her words and carried on.

On time, just as before, it was not long before the civilians stormed in. Now the Knight realized, what happened before was not a dream. She fought, cutting down people in a desperate attempt to flee with her beloved. Failing, the Knight was captured and her Princess killed.

The Knight opened her eyes in bed once more. This time she hurriedly got them ready, packed a bit of food for the road and left the castle through a hole in the walls blocked by the willow tree. The Princess hurried along, "Where are we going?"

"Time is of the essence, we have to get as far away as possible Princess." The Knight ran and ran, holding her Princess by the hand as they ran. Dashing through the village called the attention of the people.

Targeting the Princess, a bold common thief drew a dagger through her chest. "Princess!?" The Knight panicked and swept her Princess in her arms before trying to sprint out of there.

"There there.. no need to worry about me.. we'll make it out safe, alright.?" She still smiled even as blood flowed nonstop from her chest, filling her lungs and slowly suffocating her. The moment the Knight met her eyes, a glass bottle hit her skull, and it all went black.

Again, she woke up next to her Princess. "Princess, we need to leave now." She hurriedly woke her lady up, stole some servant clothes for the both and left their hair down. "I cannot let them hurt you"

Aloud the Princess inquired, "Why now?! I need to speak with mother and father!"

Astonished the Knight was, "Princess, I can't let you die again. We are leaving now." The Knight grabbed her hand and rushed out. "You're the hope I have left in this hell." She hurried out down the town, a different path than before.

At last, they made it out alive. She stands and watches her Princess in a field of scorpion grass. She looked away for but a moment, eyes snapping back forward at a cry. A farmer who followed them bashed the Princess with his ax. The Knight simply killed the man, then herself.

Dawn came again, and with it, another attempt to flee. They made it out once more, dressed as commoners. The Knight smiled with relief; there was no one else but them. They laid under a tree in one another's arms for a while, the Knight getting her much needed rest.

Down the rain came, drowning out the sky in black. The Knight and the Princess scrambled to get up. They hurry out, spotting a cave where they could potentially stay dry. It was only past the river.

Dashing across the river, the two did their best to fight the current. Oh gosh, the river feels longer than I thought.. Is what ran through the Knight's mind as she held the Princess's hand across.

"Darling…" the Princess started but was caught off guard by the rising waters. She was swept under. The Knight dove under, desperately trying to reach her. Water filled her lungs as she watched her Princess slip away.

Caws of birds awoke her again, next to her Princess. She screamed in frustration, waking up her Princess. She looked up at the Knight with concern, but before she could ask, the Knight grabbed her hand and ran. "What's wrong?! What is going on my love?" The Princess pulled away and stopped.

"Come! My Princess hurry now! You do not need to speak with your parents, no we are not stopping to get dressed, no we aren't doing your hair. We are just escaping Princess. I…I can't lose you again." The Knight was holding back tears and outstretching her hand to her Knight.

"Care to at least tell me what is happening?" The Princess slowly took the hand of her Knight, trusting her to take her along. They moved through the market before stopping in the middle again.

Cautiously, the Knight explained, "…I.. This.. I'm not sure.. I keep waking up to the same day… To the same day just to watch you die.. again, and again… I…I… I thought it was just a nightmare at first.. but…" Before she realized it, she was crying. She looked away a bit embarrassed. The Knight continued, looking up again, "Please… Princess we have to get out of he-" Her eyes were met with her Princess's blood in the air. The carriage that hit her because of a negligent driver fled the scene. The Knight collapsed.

Suddenly, waking up after such a scene startled the Knight. Faced with despair, she made her way across the room. Her hands gripped her sword without hesitation. Her Princess woke up and sat up in time to see her Knight drive her sword through her chest. The Princess held her close, watching her Knight in horror. The Knight felt a sort of relief, just being held in her Love's arms.

Exactly as all the other times, the Knight woke up by her Princess's side. The Knight was full of tears as she wrapped herself around her Princess. It was only about twenty minutes before the Knight heard chanting outside and banging on the large palace doors. Not now, it's to early.. The Knight hurried her Princess out, answering any of her questions.

Execution hour had arrived. The Knight scurried out with her Princess, trying to escape through the back in the hole of the castle wall. Just as she hoped to make it out safe, they were intercepted by the town's folk. Guillotine and being hung up like laundry. Death will always come for the pair.

A strangled breath screamed all she could as she was hanged. Again and again, over and over, she would watch her Princess die before facing her own end. The Knight collapsed against the closet door among reawakening. Her Princess gently joined her side and listened to her pour her heart out. "Not even in death can we part.., We will figure this out." The Princess spoke with a sense of hesitation, yet she believed every word her Knight spoke. The two conversed for a while,

"My Lady, I promise to make you go from Princess to my Wife once we get out of this." She smiled softly before the pounding of steps filled the air, "I promise." She drew her sword. This time, she'd manage to fight her way, beating eighty-six of the civilians only to end up as the eighty-seventh dead.

"My love." The Knight smiled at her Princess who had just woken up. Brushing her hand through the Princess's hair, she much more calmly explained the situation. She did not quite understand it, but she did know her Knight was serious that they needed to flee.

The Knight grabbed her sword and silently left the palace with her Princess, as if it was an average day of tea parties. She gathered some jewels and gems, gold and silver, anything to sell in case they needed money.

They made it out just as they did the time they drowned, though, this time, they did not stop and wait for rain. Across the river and into the countryside, they ran until they could not any longer. Not even stopping for flowers or the birds, they ran hard and fast. Once it started to rain, the Knight traded a necklace for a room at an inn.

For the first time in what felt like months, she got to wake up to the short wooden ceiling of an inn. , She had her Princess, alive, with her sleeping on her chest. She suddenly felt a huge wave of anxiety. Will we still survive..? Did we beat it? Have I made it? All her thoughts we silenced once her Princess woke up.

Continuing on their day to day, they'd been making it as far as possible from the kingdom, avoiding any guard or search party. The Knight was always on high alert, trying their best to not be killed.

Weeks pass, and once it seemed everything had died down, they faced one another atop a small alter at a church. It was them and only them. Together. Flowers were in full bloom creating a sweet aroma for them. Forget-me-nots lined the field just beyond the church's windows. In simple white dresses, they gazed at one another.

"Until Death do us part, beyond even that, I will forever be your Wife, my one and only Princess." A sweet moment between the two, sealed with a kiss.

Once again, she woke up to a new dawn, with her Wife by her side.
