Work Text:
“Is it a deal, then? You can have eternal youth, never touched by disease or decay, a whole world you can hardly imagine as you are now.”
It looks just like you. Its voice sounds just like yours. You have no doubt that this doppelgänger could simply step into your life and no one would be any the wiser. Yet it’s asking your permission, offering temptations to get your agreement, and you don’t know why. Perhaps its bound by something beyond your perception, or perhaps it simply gets more amusement out of winning you over.
“You make it sound so appealing,” you say, “but you want to take over my life more than you want to keep that for yourself. It makes me think there’s something not so appealing about the existence you want to trade me.”
“What one resents, another treasures,” it says, untroubled by the accusation, and holds out a hand in invitation.
