Chapter Text
Deputy.
The word rang in his ears. He had spent so long finally becoming the Supervisor, gaining the building’s trusts, and becoming his own person. Finally stepping out of his brother’s shadow, only for it all to go to waste. People finally started to see him as “Supervisor Samon Gokuu” and not "Supervisor Gokuu’s younger brother, Deputy Gokuu”.
His brother was getting released from the underground prison. It was good news, or at least it should have been. He was happy his brother was finally free and his charges were dropped, but how could he be happy when all his hard work was for nothing? What “hard work” though..?
The day moved in a blur. One second he was in the Warden’s office hearing the news, the next he was cleaning out the Supervisors office, and finally he was standing in front of the entrance to the Underground cells. He took a deep breath and opened one of the doors. He started down the stairs and walked over to the cell where his brother sat. He looked awful. Enki was too tall for the cell and he looked cramped, hunching over himself.
Samon hadn’t gone down to the underground cells since he was locked up, too scared of emotions taking over and releasing him. That didn’t stop him too much as he still moved to the island so he could be closer to his big brother.
He knew Enki heard him approach, but he never looked up, preferring the musty floor rather than the brother he left in the outside world to deal with his aftermath. Samon took another breath and opened the door to the cell and stepped aside.
“You're free now, Aniki.” He tried to contain the tremble in his voice, not wanting his brother to think of him as weak. Enki stood up as best he could and walked out the cell, coming face to face with him. Samon couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his face after seeing his brother again. It felt as though he was a child all over again, seeing his brother after a long time away. He would always bounce around him, asking questions, holding him, bragging to him, trying to get his attention, but it never worked.
The older man was towering over the other. Enki gazed down at him and walked away, towards the exit. His smile twitched a little as he tried to catch up with him. He asked him a couple questions, trying to make sure he was alright and didn’t need anything, but was brushed off with quick one word answers. He knew his brother didn’t care for him all that much but it still hurt nonetheless.
Samon was already off duty so he took Enki back to his apartment on the island to freshen up and be able to relax. When Enki was in the shower Samon had set Enki’s clothes in the spare room. He realized that this was supposed to be his room, yet he was staying in the master bedroom and not Enki.
Samon Gokuu was no longer a Supervisor.
All he could think about was how he was never going to be Samon ever again. He walked to his bedroom. He tried not to think too hard about going back to Deputy Gokuu while walking with his brother but now that he was alone he could feel the tears burning his skin. He wasn’t sure when he began to cry but now he couldn't stop. They kept pouring, his tears turned to sobs, and he laid down in his bed, soon to be Enki’s bed, and cried his heart out. The guilt he felt about being upset at his brother’s release made him cry more. He felt selfish. He felt useless. What had he really done to deserve this position in the first place? Nothing. The only reason he was this far was nepotism. He was here because of his brother’s influence. Nothing else. Yet, here he was. Crying because the reason he was given such a position was back. His big brother. The person he wanted to be more than anything. The person who never looked his way. He cried until he had no tears left to shed. He laid in utter silence. Wondering when the shower stopped running and if his brother had heard. Wondering if he even cared.
Samon stared at the ceiling for a while. He wasn’t sure how much time had passed. Time seemed irrelevant to him at this point. He tried to cheer himself up by thinking of the good times he’s had, but he could only truly think about his college friends. They were the reason he even accepted the role of Supervisor in the first place, they encouraged him to step out of his brother’s shadow and be his own person. They knew of everything that had happened to him and all his insecurities, yet loved him for who he was, not for his brother. He truly appreciated them. If not for their kindness he wouldn’t have gotten closer to any of the building 5 guards, nor Kiji or Kenshirou. He was glad that he could still be close to the other guards of building 5 but the problem was the other two. Kiji and Kenshirou never really talked to him while he was Deputy. Never had a reason. They only talked once he got promoted and that's when he started to see them more often. Life will go back to how it used to be. Dull.
Perhaps not though? He became much closer to the other guards during his time as Supervisor so maybe things will be better? He tried to look on the bright side. His brother was back. Maybe they could actually get close and become friends or acquaintances at the least. It was strange to think that the other guards felt more like his brothers rather than his true brother. He sat up and shook his head. Now's not the time to think about this. Just try talking to Enki again, and hope for the best. That's all he could do anyway. Hope. He paused at the thought, ‘why do I sound like Nagito..’ He shivered.
He got out of bed and stretched, hearing his shoulders pop. He turned around, saw the tear stained pillows and sighed. He’d have to wash the pillow covers before returning the room to Enki. Or will Enki move out? Well even if he did Samon wouldn’t be allowed to stay there. Samon grabbed his phone and realized it was time for dinner already. Normally he eats in the dining hall so he doesn’t really have much food in his apartment, however, Enki preferred to make his own food and meal prep. He tried it once but he got tired of the food after a couple days. Samon sighed again and went to see what was in the fridge. He walked out of his room and saw Enki sitting on the couch reading a book. He looked between the kitchen and his brother and decided to sit down with him.
“So….” Samon started, not really sure what to say, “Are you hungry? I can order something or go and buy some groceries if you’d like?” He looked up at his brother and saw him pause. It wouldn’t be noticeable for anyone else, but Samon had been chasing the guy for so long, trying to be like him, of course he’d know all his tells. Enki didn’t spare him a glance though, not even a word, just shook his head and went back to reading. Samon deflated a little, he knew it was obvious how much he adored his brother so he didn’t understand why his brother hated him. He decided to go look through the kitchen and see what he had. After a couple minutes he decided to make some Congee.
Once he finished he set out a bowl for Enki, just in case he felt hungry. At this point Samon had given up on trying to talk to Enki so he took his food to his room and ate as he packed.
Enki walked by the door and stared inside. He stood and watched Samon as he was in his own little world, headphones on and ignoring the world around him. Enki leaned on the door frame and continued to observe. Samon had his back to him the entire time, not noticing his brother's presence. Enki notices Samon pick up a little plushie, a red scowling bear, and stare at it. He doesn’t understand why he has such an attachment to the thing but he hears Samon sniffle and hug the bear before carefulling placing it in a box. Tired of not being seen, Enki finally speaks up. “What are you doing?” Samon didn’t respond, music still playing. He sighs, pushing himself off the wall, and walks over to the younger one. He places his hand on Samon’s shoulder, who he yelps and whips around. Enki sighs again at his wide eyed expression, noticing how his eyes seem red rather than the expected white. He repeats his question as Samon pulls his headphones out.
Samon looks at him, smiles and says, “Well this is supposed to be the supervisor’s room, so it makes sense for you to stay here.”
Enki rolls his eyes. “You can keep it. I don’t need anything lavish.” He said before turning on his heels and walking out of the room.
Samon glanced around the room and sighed upon realizing he now needed to put everything back in its original place. He decided to reorganize everything instead since half of his stuff has already been packed away. He put his headphones back on and got to work. Glad that Enki finally looked at him today.
