Work Text:
Days after the incident at Simon Soups, two employees with their contracts of employment terminated are located at a motel. A cheap motel at that, considering one of the rooms is literally just a hole in the ground. You can hear the faint yellings of a werewolf or a translucent ghost from it.
The room Cal & Sadie got was by no means elegant but it did the job well. Sadie couldn’t just let Cal bike all the way back to who knows where and honestly, she didn’t want him to leave. She wanted him right by her side. Turns out it was not so metaphorical as we see both of them in one bed, side by side.
Sadie is fast asleep sprawled out, with a bit of drool dripping down on her pillow. This seems to be the first time in a long time where she can get some much needed rest, that she was deprived of.
Cal stared at her, his screen more muted, but still faintly illuminated. He thought about what had transpired between them after the accident. How statistically exceptional the chances were that he’d find someone as rare as her. His memory bank started to light up, and it played just that.
The couple walk from the front desk of the same motel, Cal swinging the keys on his index finger, expertly.
“Cal, I understand that we both are low on funds,” Sadie stated.
“Correct.” Cal replied.
“And I usually go from job to job, without a place to come back to. Whereas you are definitely not going back tonight on your bike.”
“Right.”
As they got to the room, and unlocked the door. The tight motel room was revealed to them. One fact became obvious with Sadie’s reply:
“Did we have to get the room with only one bed?”
…
“I do not require a bed to sleep. Charging upright is my preferred way of getting energy.”
…
Sadie covered her face with her hand, gazing away from Cal. A dusting of pink on her cheeks. “Oh! Is that so?”
“Yes, indeed.” Cal tilted his head, looking at her.
They spent some more time together, even visiting Sadie’s home since having a motel got too expensive. They even had movie nights watching films on Cal’s monitor. Working odd jobs so Cal could get the food truck working. Sadie was more than happy to be hired by him once he made the proposal. Though, despite the fun days they had with each other one thing seemed to escape Cal…
“Sadie, I wanted to give you something.” Cal held a rolled up paper.
“What is it, Cal?” Sadie asked.
"I am not sure if it will replace it... But here."
Sadie opens the rolled up paper with an awe-stricken expression. "Is this!?"
"Yes, that is the poster of one of your other favorite movies."
It is an original poster of the iconic 1975 film Jaws.
“Where did you even get this?” Sadie exclaimed.
“I connected to the internet and found a seller nearby. Highly convenient.” Cal rubbed the back of his neck.
“Why? It’s amazing, don't get me wrong, but what’s the occasion?”
"You looked out for me, bringing Fern The Fern with you. It meant a lot when you saved it and me. But, your poster of The Abyss (1989), we didn’t get it back. I knew it meant a lot to you. I couldn’t replace it, which is why I got you this instead.” He gestured back to the gift. “Is it to your liking?”
“Cal…” She whispered, staring at the poster again. He remembered, something about that made Sadie’s heart flutter. “You’re the best.”
It freeze-framed on one of his favorite things about her, that wide smile which to others might seem creepy, to him? A sign that she really is truly happy. He reminisced on how Sadie convinced him to sleep next to her, despite himself. Cal turned to his side to see Fern the Fern on the only window sill and right next to it the poster of Jaws. All this processing had to come to an end. Only one thing remained in his mind as he went into sleep mode.
“Good night, Sadie.”
