Living like this was new for both of them.
Vax had never lived without his sister, and rarely ever stayed in one place for too long. To him, home were the people; his family.
Now, he had a house, and a soon-to-be husband awaiting him there. He'd never had anybody waiting for him before.
Vax slipped into the house unnoticed. It had become a habit for him not to announce his presence; to step quietly and melt into the shadows. The house greeted him with the familiar scent of spices and tea that always reminded him of Gilmore’s. A faint melody rang through the hallway, accompanied by enthusiastic humming.
A smile spreading on his lips, the half-elf crept closer, stopping in the doorframe to the kitchen. The picture that greeted him was one he'd gladly commit to memory for eternity.
Shaun was positioned before the stove, but the process of cooking had long since been abandoned. Instead, he was humming along to the music that came from seemingly nowhere; his eyes closed, head tilted back, arms moving through the air, hips swinging from side to side in the rhythm, the statue perfectly framed by his expensive robes.
Time lost all meaning as Vax found himself simply standing there, watching, adoring.
All the years of fighting and suffering and almost dying had been so worth it, just for this. To see the man he loved be so light and without any worry in the world was worth every second of hardship Vax and his family had endured.
In the brief pause where the song ended and just before the next one could start, Shaun opened his eyes, inevitably meeting Vax's.
"Hey there, beautiful. Dancing all by yourself?" Vax asked before Shaun could speak, a loving smirk on his lips.
"Maybe I'm just waiting for a dark and handsome stranger to keep me company," Shaun replied with a wink, stepping toward him - an invitation.
Vax couldn't help but laugh as he moved closer to his beloved. "If you are hoping to get me to dance, I need to warn you. My poor dance skills were one of the many causes of my father's disappointment in me," he half-joked, placing his hands on Shaun's hips when he finally reached him.
"Oh, but being bad at it is half the fun," Shaun answered, eyes sparkling in excitement. How could Vax ever resist!
Somewhat shy, Vax started tapping his feet, then moving his shoulders until he was awkwardly dancing. At that point, Shaun thankfully had the mercy to grab him by the hands and guide them into a few simple steps.
It was far from high art, but the music was loud enough and the hour late enough to tune out all sense of what was correct and decent.
Not much later, they were spinning and laughing and singing from the top of their lungs.
Song after song they continued, the kettle now cold, a half-cut carrot resting on the chopping board. Their eyes stayed always fixed on the other, unwilling to miss a single second.
As the evening continued, the rhythms got slower and more intimate, and they ended up close to each other, foreheads resting against the other, hands on waists. Their hearts were lighter, their smiles brighter and their breath heavier than a few hours earlier.
"I know you know this, but I do need to say that you are incredibly beautiful. I mean, you always are, but tonight especially," Vax murmured, eyelids half closed. "And I love you very much."
He could feel the breath escaping Shaun's lungs, the skin in his face shifting as a wide smile brightened his features. "I love you too, my handsome thief," he said. With that, he leaned forward, closing the distance between them.
Yeah... Vax could get used to living together like this.
