Healing old wounds

Chapter 1: Old friends

Chapter Text

Sonya Ivanov is a former Russian spy, actually a former Black Widow. She was trained with Natasha Romanoff and her sister Yalana. She became extremely close with Natasha, even though after aging out of the Black Widow program only one of them went into the Russian military. They stayed close as they grew up because they both felt that they were all that they had. While in the Russian military about seven years ago now, Sonya had met a Navy lieutenant Commander at the time named Steve McGarrett. They quickly became friends, she was even with him during the transport in North Korea where his father had died in Hawaii. She stayed in touch with him after he left the Navy to go back to Hawaii, but they haven't seen each other since then. Lately she's been a mercenary with the Expendables.

Today, Sonya is in Hawaii to check on a fellow mercenary who had called Barney Ross and her for help last night. She's unaware that he's dead, and Five-O are about to be in the hotel she's also about to be in.

“Freeze! Five-O!” Steve shouts with his gun up as he and Danny Williams see a female figure coming through the window of the hotel room.

“Well, it's nice to you too, Steve. How have you been?” Sonya says, keeping her hands visible but her back to them.

“Sonya? What business does the Russian government have with Daniel Moore?” Steve asks in confusion as he lowers his gun with a soft smile.

“I'm not with them anymore. I've been a mercenary for a few years now. Daniel is a work friend. What are you and your friend doing here?” Sonya finally turns around to face them, keeping her hands up and smiling softly as well.

“Was not is. Daniel Moore is dead. Divers found his body by accident early this morning,” Steve says as he finally puts his gun back in his holster. He knows she's not the killer because she wouldn't refer to someone she killed like he's still alive.

“Shit. How'd he die?” Sonya lowers her hands, deciding to help them instead of being a problem for them.

“We'll tell you that if you tell us how you knew Daniel was staying here,” Steve offers, gesturing for Danny to put his gun away as well.

“Sonya, I need help. I already tried Barney, but he didn't answer. I know you guys might be on your own job, or busy, or whatever, but I think this job was more than I bargained for. Please? Shit! No, no, no! Please?! I promise I won't tell anyone, just please don't-” Daniel's voicemail to Sonya last night ends with a gunshot. Everyone looks at her phone with a grim expression, she's standing in the command center of the Palace playing the voicemail for Steve and his team.

“Who's the Barney he mentioned?” Lou Grover asks, running a hand over his face.

“Barney Ross, my boss and another mercenary. We had been on a job in Morocco when we both got the phone calls from him at about 11:30.” The guilt she feels for not being there when her friend was killed is evident in her voice.

“What do you know about the job Daniel was working last night?” Adam Noshimori asks her.

“Not much. He mentioned he was hired by this woman to find her husband that everyone thinks is dead. Apparently he's been missing for almost six years. He mentioned it over drinks the other day,” Sonya says, clearly trying to remember as much as she can about that conversation at Rusty’s two days ago.

“Did he mention who this woman is?” Sonya gives them the woman's name and the address Daniel had mentioned. When they get there, they can see two kids running around in front of the house.

“Melanie Reyes, we're here about the man you hired a couple days ago to find your husband. I'm lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett, and this is Sonya Ivanov. May we come in?” Steve says once the woman opens the door. His heart breaks at the obvious hope in her eyes.

“Come on in. Did Daniel find Gabriel? Is that why you guys are here?” Melanie’s question makes another wave of grief and sadness hit Sonya, but she doesn't show it.

“I'm afraid not. Daniel was found dead this morning. What can you tell us about your meeting with him?” Sonya says in a controlled tone with only a hint of sadness in her voice.

“Oh my God. We talked about the normal stuff. At least that's what he called it. He asked about where Gabriel was last seen, where he used to go, where he grew up, any places the police might have missed, how much I was paying him,” Melanie answers honestly with her shock evident.

“She's right. That is pretty standard for a mercenary to ask when we do rescue missions, in which finding a man that's been gone for six years is considered in our line of work,” Sonya says to Steve, explaining the process Melanie just described.

After the case is done and over with, she heads back to the mainland and New Orleans to meet back up with her team. As soon as she gets home and her keys land in the bowl, strong arms wrap around her midsection from behind and a familiar beard tickles her neck as the man nuzzles it.

“You're finally home. I thought I had lost you to Hawaii forever, love,” Lee Christmas says into her neck with that gravelly British voice of his that he knows she loves, making Sonya giggle as she tilts her head for him with a smile.

“You know I'll always come back to you, my Christmas present,” Sonya says, joking about his last name just like everyone does. She lets him pull her to the bedroom, needing to unwind after everything in Hawaii. After some fun, she lays her head on his chest and lets herself fall asleep.
