Loneliness. That depressing feeling was something everyone felt once in a while, right? Fan had been feeling lonely these past few days. Test Tube kept drifting and driting away from him ever since she started dating Paintbrush.
They were happy for them, sure, but sometimes he felt a little... jealous. Jealous of the fact that those two were dating while he had no one to call his. Jealous of the way they would call each other pet names and make Fan feel awkward for being near them. They hated to admit it, but they were jealous of them.
At least he had Lightbulb. She was the one thing that made them feel just a little less lonely, like a light in the darkness. Ever since their other two friends started being a "thing," they sort of stuck to each other, having no other close friends aside from each other.
Today was Valetine's Day, a day when Test Tube and Paintbrush had an excuse to be especially lovey-dovey, and in turn, a day when Fan felt especially lonely.
"Painty!" Test Tube exclaimed as she opened a gift given by their partner. "Golly, this is- You shouldn't have!" he was holding a card in the shape of a heart. It did look quite fancy, but Fan didn't quite understand what was so special about it.
"I made it myself." Paintbrush said. "It took me about two days, and a whole lot of glue, but it was worth it. Anything for you. Happy Valentine's." they smiled at their girlfriend.
Fan coughed. The couple looked at them, sort of taken aback, as if they had forgotten he was there.
"Fan, I know it's Valentine's Day, and you don't have a valentine," Paintbrush said. "But Test Tube and I do. So, if you could just uh..." they glanced towards the door. "Sorry."
Fan felt a little heartbroken, but they complied. He knew that if he stayed, he'd just ruin the moment. "Fine," he sighed. "I'll just go to Lightbulb or something..."
But the other two were already occupied with each other. They didn't even hear a word he said. They looked so happy together, and Fan wondered if they'd ever have someone to be happy with. They probably wouldn't. He didn't even like anyone in that way!
Well... that might've been a lie. He did kind of have a thing for this one object...
"Oh, Paper-face!" Lightbulb exclaimed, jogging towards Fan. "I've been lookng for ya!"
"You- you have?" Fan asked. He felt himself heating up.
"Yup! I wanted to give you somethin'! For Valentine's Day!" Lightbulb handed him a heart-shaped card, kind of like the one Paintbrush gave Test Tube, but it was wonkier, more Lightbulb-y.
Fan stood there for a few moments, stunned. Was this... a confession? When they opened this card, would there be the three words he's always been hoping for written inside? He opened the card.
Inside was the sweetest thing anyone had ever said (or in this case, written) to him. Reading the card, he had never felt so appreciated, so loved before. Lightbulb was just too kind. After reading the card, with the words "Love, Lightbulb" at the end, Fan was feeling way better than he did when Paintbrush and Test Tube kicked him out of their room.
"Omga!" Lightbulb exclaimed with a worried look on her face. "You okay, Fanster? You're crying! I didn't know my silly lil' card would make you cry!"
"I'm fine..." Fan said. "It's just... Thank you, Lighty. You're a great friend."
"Friend? So you don't accept my confession?"
"C- confession?!"
"Yeah!" Lightbulb exclaimed. "If you take all the capital letters in the card, it spells, 'Will you be my partner'! See?"
"Oh..." Fan thought the random capitalization was just a Lightbulb thing. They didn't know what to say. The object he liked... liked him back? This must be a dream. But no, it was definitely real life. Lightbulb genuinely loved him, and for once he didn't feel so lonely.
"I... I can be your partner..." Fan blinked. "Yeah." he was soup. They felt so happy, they were practically melting. He and Lightbulb. Partners. In a relationship. Dating. It was the best day of his life.
"Yay!" Lightbulb interlocked her arm with Fan's. "What's the first thing we should do now, as partners?"
"What do partners usually do?"
"Hmm..." Lightbulb thought for a moment. "I know!" she gave Fan a quick kiss, smiling as she pulled away. It was just a kiss on the cheek, but Fan felt as if he was in heaven for the one second that it lasted. And Lightbulb's smile was ethereal.
They could get used to this. They didn't feel so lonely now that he had someone to be his.
