Picking Up The Shattered Remains

Summary:

Dr. Retro has made a breakthrough: after a piece of a mysterious mask was returned by a visitor from the elevator, Retro is able to develop a cure to Folly's parasite. If everything goes well, the world as everyone knew it could change for the better, for Folly, for Retro, for Melanie, for everyone.

The story follows Dreamer on her recovery, mental, physical, and social. This is my first fic, I hope everyone likes it as much as I enjoy writing it. Folly is a comfort character of mine, and I wanted to write a fic about her recovering, a hopeful outlook on Folly's story. A hope for a better future.

Chapter 1: Prologue: Discovery

Chapter Text

“Can this be?” Dr. Retro asked herself. She held a bottle of liquid medicine in her paw. “Have I finally found it?”

“Found what?” Pest asked, sitting in the swivel chair near Dr. Retro’s desk.

“I may have found something that can get rid of that parasite forever,” Dr. Retro answered.

“Is it possible to poison someone like her, Retro?” Pest asked.

“I’m not trying to poison her, sugar. I’m a doctor, not an assassin,” Dr. Retro responded. “I found something that could possibly rid her of that parasite. Maybe she could be the Dreamer we all knew and loved.”

Pest knew Folly and Dreamer were the same person. But it was very easy to forget. Something happened one day, and after that she was never the same Dreamer.

“...really?” Pest wondered with a genuine sense, which was different from his usual sarcastic or insulting retorts.

“I’m not 100%...” Dr. Retro added. “But I’m quite sure that it will. I honestly think getting her in here will be the hardest part of the whole operation.” Dr. Retro paced. “She doesn’t trust anyone, it feels like…”

“Ask the wall guy,” Pest suggested. “I think him and Folly are buddies or something.”

Dr. Retro did recall Wallter and Folly being friends. Folly had other friends too, but Wallter was the only reasonable one.

Dr. Retro had already recovered the broken side of Folly’s old mask. She’d received it from a stranger she’d seen in the elevator, they said they found it floating in the water in Eternal Limbo.

Maybe this would help her feel better. Dr. Retro also used it to find the cure to The Great One’s parasitic curse. Despite it being cracked and heavily chipped, she thought she’d at least offer it.

Dr. Retro walked off to get her phone to call Wallter. But on her way stopped near her cork-board she had on her office wall. There were pictures she kept of family, friends and her regular patients on the board. But one picture wasn’t really any of those.

It was an old picture of Dreamer. She wore a flower crown she’d made for herself, with freshly picked dandelions. She looked so happy. Beside her sat someone else, also wearing a dandelion crown: Melanie. Dr. Retro remembered that Melanie was the one who originally gave her that picture.

Dr. Retro wondered if any of that was still left of her. She wondered if Folly even remembered a moment of happiness. A moment of peace. A moment of love.

She then grabbed her phone and dialed Wallter. Things were about to change. Dr. Retro knew it. While it was a risk, Dr. Retro was willing to take it. If it meant saving Dreamer, saving her son, saving Melanie, and countless others, it was worth it.
