“Eyyy, shortstop.” Angel Dust leaned over the top of the chair Lucifer was sitting in.
“Short stop?” Lucifer pulled a face. That wasn’t a normal nickname from the spider. Short king, yes, which was an annoying reference to his perfectly average height, thank you very much, but short stop?
“Yeah.” He dangled a softball glove above him. “This years’ Hell’s Faire comes with a softball tournament between the overlords.”
“Oh I don’t get involved in the Faire.”
“Charlie wants everyone involved. We’ve almost got a team. And we, well, technically Alastor as the overlord on the crew, thought you’d be a good short stop.” Angel dropped the glove onto Lucifer’s lap.
“Is it because I’m short?” Lucifer picked up the glove and looked at it carefully. If Alastor was involved, he wasn’t entirely convinced that it wouldn’t be trapped. But a game of complicated catch did sound a lot like fun.
“No, actually. You’ve got quick reaction speed, you can fly, and you would be unexpected.” Lucifer jumped slightly when Alastor materialised in front of him.
“Damnit, Bambi.”
“I haven’t done anything to it.”
“What?”
“The glove. You’re looking at it like it’s going to bite you.”
“I wouldn’t put it past you.”
“I’m wounded.”
“I thought that was healed.”
Alastor chuckled. “Yes. Indeed.” And then through gritted, glowing teeth. “Thank you.” The begrudging expression dropped and the smile that graced his faced was more normal, if anything about the radio demon’s face could be considered normal. “Anyway, dear Charlotte wanted you to join the team.”
“Do you want me on your team?” Lucifer narrowed his eyes slightly. “Or was this just an opportunity to make jokes about my height.”
“Oh, I don’t need extra opportunities for that. But we do need more people involved. And too many of the residents are worried that I am going to eat them at practice – or if they get out.”
“Ok.” Lucifer was becoming cautiously interested. “So why put me at shortstop?”
Alastor summoned a softball out of his shadows and threw it at Lucifer. Lucifer teleported out of the chair to one side, reappearing with the glove on his hand and caught the ball. “Hey! A bit of warning next time.” He grinned and lobbed the ball back. Alastor summoned a glove out of his shadows and caught the ball easily.
“Fast reactions.” He threw the ball up high.
Lucifer chuckled and flew up to catch the ball at its peak.
“You can fly.”
“And I would be unexpected. Ok, I’ll play.” Lucifer floated gently back to the ground. “So who else is on the team?”
