Work Text:
His brother. His own brother, granted he and Ryker have never often treated each other as such, and Ryker was always more of a dog that needed to be occasionally put in its place to Viggo, never did he expect such mutiny.
It was bad enough that Ryker had turned on him but his own men?
Which is how he now finds himself hiding in a compartment underground that he’d had installed for a scenario such as this, it had been a suspicion of his and the hatch was precaution, deep down he never thought he’d have to make use of it. His leg was badly damaged in the scuffle, it’ll need to be stitched, the blood loss already making his head dizzy.
Only once the noises dissipate and he heard the talks of dispatching the shellfire and only then did he slowly creep out from his hiding space. Hiding. How unbefitting a man such as himself.
Viggo has always prided himself in being well put together and an authority figure but only as he’s alone does he allow himself to let his head thump back against the wooden leg of his once desk.
Upon a further examination it’s clear the gash needs to be dealt with and now.
He has the necessary material in here, always the cautious one that he is, the problem will be hobbling himself over to the chest it’s kept in, and so with a grimace he pulls himself up and uses the wall for support to make his way towards the big wooden chest at the back wall behind his desk.
After some shuffling around he finds the needle and thread he was looking for.

The first penetration of the needle has him gasping and holding his breath. This isn’t the first time he’s had to stitch his own injuries and it certainly never gets easier. The first time had been when he was just a boy around ten years of age, some older kids had shoved him around at Ryker’s command- not unlike his current situation. He’d been left with a knife slice to his arm, not a big one but at the time it had felt like the end of the world.
Not wanting to admit his weaknesses by going to the Village healer he'd boarded himself up in his bedroom and dealt with it himself.
It was that day that he vowed to never be pushed around again, and had been doing a good job fulfilling that vow up until today. As much as it shames him to admit the ambush had taken him completely off guard and he hadn’t realized that so many of his men had turned on him due to the ongoing war with the dragon riders.
“You’ve grown obsessed! We could kill the boy and be done with it!” Ryker had yelled, referring to the dragon rider's leader, the boy that had been a great disturbance and the latest feud between the two brothers. Viggo hates to admit it to himself but he knows he has developed an obsession over Hiccup. The boy is incredibly smart and cunning and Viggo more often than not found himself almost excited for their next face off.
Had spent many a moons debating what test he should set for Hiccup next, pushing the boy's limits until he got an emotional reaction or another ingenious plan from him. The adrenaline from the battles with Hiccup had grown more important to him than the well being of his business. This was dangerous that he knew but he’d told Ryker that it would pass soon and they’d go back to normal, looking back on it now perhaps he had said that more to himself than his brother.
A groan he couldn’t quite hold back pulls him from his thoughts- the wound is halfway closed up now, just 3 more stitches to go.
How would Hiccup react he wonders, when he goes to him for “help” it’s his next plan, he can’t defeat his brother on his own that he knows- and even if for a ploy he would adore working alongside Hiccup even as falsification. To see him plan in action, actively watch it and be a part of it? It’s what he’s fantasized about for longer than he’s willing to admit. How will Hiccup react when he finds out it’s just to get back at Ryker? Will he even be willing to kill Ryker? Surely if he’s pushed enough. Anyone can kill if pushed far enough, and with Viggo’s whispers in his ear? Surely he can convince him to rid this world of Ryker Grimborn. He finds himself laughing in the midst of the pain, almost deliriously, but that's what he is, whether it's from the pain or the rush? He doesn’t know, and it isn’t until he hears the flaps of wings that he cuts the thread and makes his way back into his hatch preparing to put his plan into fruition.
Only allowing himself a small smirk as the tent flap opens and the uneven footsteps of a boot and metal reach his ears before he composes himself and puts on his half-dead betrayed act.
