Team Building Exercise

Summary:

“It's not going to work,” Luka was, predictably, the first to shoot the plan down.
“Not with that attitude.” Reina crossed her arms.
“I think it's worth a shot. Even if it doesn't work, we'll learn from it,” Makoto chimed in.
“I agree with Makoto.” Hotaruko nodded.

Reina has a great idea for a game that will bring Team 7 and the Glowing Dawn together and is definitely not a ruse to trick any particular members into confessing their feelings because all of their teammates are sick of watching them pine.

Notes:

Posting this separately from the raitomo collection simply bc I don't wanna add character tags to that one if they're only present for one chapter, but also they feature way too prominently in this story not to be tagged.

I've seen different versions of how Truth or Dare works, but when I was a kid we'd just go round the circle to make sure everyone got picked the same number of times and we'd decide as a group what each person's question/dare would be. So that's how I wrote them playing.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“It's not going to work,” Luka was, predictably, the first to shoot the plan down.

“Not with that attitude.” Reina crossed her arms.

“I think it's worth a shot. Even if it doesn't work, we'll learn from it,” Makoto chimed in.

“I agree with Makoto.” Hotaruko nodded. “But I also doubt it'll work. Perhaps on Tomoro, but if Raito doesn't want his feelings about something known, you're never going to trick him into spilling them.”

“Hey, just what are you implying here? You think Tomoro is easy to trick? He's not!” Reina snapped defensively.

“Then why are we trying to trick him? I told you this wouldn't work,” Luka sighed.

“Let's just try it! What's the worst that could happen?”

“A team building exercise? Isn't this a stupid kid’s game?” Raito inquired skeptically.

“Can't we do something else? This is ridiculous,” Tomoro complained.

“Nope! We all voted on this while you two were out shopping. Four against two,” Reina proclaimed.

“Hotaruko, tell me she's lying.” Raito turned to his teammate for help.

“She's not. We did vote on it,” Hotaruko confirmed.

“Why are you scared to play? Hiding something?” Luka questioned.

“Who said I was scared? It said it's stupid. I'm not scared. If you all want to play so bad, fine. Let's play.”

“Why does that always work on you?” Tomoro grumbled. If Raito was already dragged in, he had no hope of getting out of this.

To the triumph of some and the misery of others, the members of Team 7 and the Glowing Dawn found themselves sitting in a circle playing Truth or Dare.

“You're up first Reina. Truth or dare?” Makoto asked.

“Truth. Like I'd ever pick dare with you monsters.”

After some whispered discussion on what to ask her, the question decided on was: “Would you rather go three days without food, or give up one of your plushies?”

“Isn't ‘would you rather’ a totally different game?” Tomoro pointed out.

“Don't be so nitpicky! It's supposed to be fun. You know what fun is, don't you?” Reina scoffed. “And I'd pick three days without food. Now it's your turn, Makocchan.”

Putting their plan into action, each kid picked truth, and every question asked was something innocent and not at all embarrassing to answer, establishing ‘truth’ as the safe option.

When it got Raito, it seemed a safe bet that he'd follow everyone else's lead.

“Dare.”

Or…not? They'd considered that Tomoro might pick dare to be different, but they were all certain Raito would take the beaten path.

Unaware of how suspicious it made them look, the co-conspirators shared worried glances as their plan took a massive hit.

“I…dare you to take that bandana off,” Hotaruko finally spoke.

“Seriously? Fine.”

With a muttered swear, Raito removed his bandana, letting his hair fall over his face and cover one of his eyes. Everyone was either so shocked seeing a bandana-less Raito or so preoccupied trying to figure out how to salvage the plan (or having their vision obscured by their hair), no one noticed the way Tomoro blushed and tried to look anywhere but at Raito.

Reina couldn't stop laughing, much to Raito's irritation. Her laughter was unfortunately contagious, spreading first to Makoto, then to Hotaruko, pulling a soft chortle out of Tomoro, and eventually even reaching Luka.

“Okay, I get it! There's a reason I don't take this thing off!” Raito huffed. “Isn't it Tomoro's turn now? Shut up!”

“Sorry, sorry,” Reina wheezed. “Truth or dare, Tomoro?”

“Dare.”

No surprise this time. Reina wasn’t going to let that ruin The Plan.

“I dare you to sit in Raito's lap.”

“What?!” Tomoro and Raito exclaimed.

“Team building. Clearly you two don't trust us enough to pick truth, so at least prove you trust each other,” Reina reasoned.

“That doesn't make sense!” Raito argued.

“Your face doesn't make sense.”

“You are such a child!”

“Stupidhairdummysayswhat.”

“Wh—”

“Raito.” Tomoro cut in. “It's not a big deal. I don't mind.”

“Oh. Okay then. I don't mind if you don't.”

It did not go unnoticed how instantly Raito calmed down once he knew Tomoro wasn't uncomfortable.

Tomoro plopped himself into his friend's lap, his back leaned comfortably against Raito's chest. Unsure what else to do with his arms, Raito looped them around Tomoro's midsection. Resting his chin on Tomoro's shoulder, he asked,

“Is this okay?”

“Yup.”

“Alright.”

It was too easy, the way they fit together as though they were meant to. The others expected more blushing and hesitating, but the two relaxed like this was something they did all the time. Because it was, when they were alone in their room and Tomoro was venting about his day.

“Aaaaaanyways, looks like we're back to Reina.”

The next round of the game went much the same. Everyone picked truth until Raito picked dare, and now he was wearing Tomoro's glasses, and they were both blind.

“Tomoro?”

“Dare.”

“I dare you to kiss Raito.”

All heads whipped around towards Luka in shock.

“What? Were we still trying to be subtle?” Luka cocked his head.

“Not anymore,” Hotaruko couldn't help laughing.

“I knew you guys were up to something,” Raito groaned in annoyance.

“Guess the jig is up.” Reina shrugged.

“I know our cover’s blown and all, but since Tomoro already picked dare, doesn't that mean he has to do it? Everyone else went their turn this round, it's only fair.” Another unexpectedly devious move from one of the younger members of the group.

“Really, Makoto?” Tomoro narrowed his eyes at him. Or at least, in his general direction. “He's right, though. Is that okay with you, Raito?”

“Do whatever you have to,” Raito answered noncommittally, hoping Tomoro couldn’t feel his heart racing with their proximity.

Tomoro turned his head and tried to kiss Raito, but without his glasses, all he managed to do was bump their noses together. Embarrassed by that misstep, when he tried again, he only barely brushed his lips against the corner of Raito's before facing forward again and announcing, “There, I did it.”

“No, you didn't,” Hotaruko denied.

“Boooooooo.” Reina gave him a thumbs down.

“Boo.” Luka mimicked Reina.

“Even I know that didn't count.” Makoto shook his head.

“Is kissing me that scary?” Raito pouted.

“I didn't wanna make you uncomfortable.”

“I told you it was okay.”

No, you said ‘do whatever you have to’ as in ‘get it over with already’!” Tomoro turned again to yell at Raito.

“So you did that because you thought I didn't want to kiss you?”

“Well, yeah.”

“Do you want to kiss me?”

“I have to. For the dare.”

“Cool. Not what I asked.”

“...”

Taking that as a yes, Raito took Tomoro's face in his hands and—after his own little misstep. He couldn't see anything with Tomoro’s glasses on—gave him a real kiss. Applause erupted from their friends, the agony of watching those two pine uselessly finally over, and that should've been the end of it.

Should have.

Raito kept going.

By god, was he going for it. After helping Tomoro turn the rest of his body around to properly face him, Raito's found their way to Tomoro's hair to pull him closer. Tomoro began to whimper softly, but they still didn't break for air.

Someone should probably stop them.

“Enough!” Reina shouted, successfully getting them to pull apart. “What are you doing? There are kids here!”

“Oh calm down, it was just a kiss. Have you seen the kinda movies Makoto watches?” Raito brushed her off. His reaction may have been a tad less blasé if he could see Tomoro's face right now.

“He's not wrong. A lot of horror movies are meant for adults, so I've seen...things,” Makoto surprisingly sided with Raito.

“Not. The point, Makocchan.”

“That was a fun team building exercise. I feel closer to you all already, really,” Raito snarked. “If you wouldn't mind, though, I'd like to keep playing with Tomoro. Without an audience.”

“Don't…say it like that.” Tomoro hid his face in his hands.

“Like what?”

“Don't play dumb with me!”

“Their first fight as a couple. That was fast,” Hotaruko chuckled. “Come on guys, let's leave them be.”

“You're all welcome,” Luka deadpanned.

“Yeah yeah, thank you for subjecting us to whatever that was.”

“Lighten up, Reina. Mission accomplished, right?”

Tomoro and Raito stayed put while their friends hustled to get as far away from them as possible.

“Psst. Tomoro. Truth or dare?” Raito asked once everyone was gone.

“Truth.” Tomoro sensed where this was going and smiled.

“Will you be my boyfriend?”

“Yeah. I think I will.”

Notes:

Thank goodness Tomoro is too blind to see how stupid Raito looks right now.
