Work Text:
It was the middle of the night when Danielle woke with a sharp pain seized her abdomen, and a moment later she felt a sudden rush of fluid down her legs. She knew instantly…she was in labor.
She reached for Henry, shaking him, “Henry…” he didn’t stir
Grimacing, she grabbed a pillow and hurled it at his head, “Henry!”
He jolted awake, “Danielle?”
She clutched her stomach, breathing hard, “it’s time”
At once he was beside her, cradling her carefully, “all right, breathe. I’ll call for the physician”
She nodded, fighting through another wave of pain, “hurry”
By dawn, Danielle’s cries echoed through the halls, as Henry paced outside the chamber, hands clenched tight, as every muscle in his body rigid with worry.
“Perfectly natural,” the queen said calmly
Henry nodded, though every instinct in him strained toward the door. He wanted to be with Danielle, but tradition kept him outside.
At last, the door opened, when the physician stepped out, composed but brisk, “any moment now”
Henry exchanged a tense glance with the king and the assembled lords. No one spoke.
Inside the room, Danielle bore down against the pain, her breaths ragged. Sweat beaded and ran down her face as Jacqueline gently wiped her brow.
“You’re doing wonderfully, Danielle,” she said softly, “the baby will be here soon”
Danielle shook her head, her voice trembling but resolute, “I won’t push unless Henry is here with me”
“It’s quite unorthodox, your majesty” the physician said
“I don’t care!” Danielle cried, gripping the sheets as another contraction seized her, “I need him!”
The physician gave Jacqueline a quick nod and hurried to the door. Opening it, she called out, “sire…she wants you”
One of the lords stepped forward to object, but the king’s voice cut through the tension, “let him pass”
The lord stepped aside at once, and Henry rushed into the room, “Danielle…”
“Henry,” she breathed, managing a faint smile through the pain, “you’re here”
He moved to her side, taking her hand, “and I’m not going anywhere”
Jacqueline stepped closer and took her other hand, as the physician said, “all right, your majesty…it’s time to push”
Danielle nodded, gripping both Henry and Jacqueline’s hands tightly as another wave of pain surged through her. She bore down with all her strength.
Again and again she pushed, her breath coming in ragged gasps, when she shook her head weakly, “I can’t…I can’t do it…”
Henry brushed the damp strands of hair from her face, his voice steady and warm, “Danielle, you can. You’re the strongest woman I’ve ever known. You’ve endured so much, and you’ve always come through. You can do this”
He slipped an arm behind her, supporting her as she leaned into him, “now…push”
Drawing on every last ounce of strength, Danielle pushed once more, and then suddenly, the room filled with the most beautiful sound…a baby’s cry.
Henry’s face broke into a radiant smile as he looked at her, “our baby’s here, Danielle”
“You have a healthy princess, “the physician announced, handling the newborn gently to the nurse
Danielle’s brow furrowed, “where are they taking her?”
“To be cleaned up,” Henry said softly, brushing a reassuring hand over hers, “I’ll go inform my parents and the lords”
She nodded, still catching her breath, as he stepped out into the hall. A smile spread across his face despite his exhaustion, “we have welcomed a princess of France”
For a moment the king and assembled lords smiled, then their expressions faltered, disappointment flickering beneath polite approval.
Only the queen showed no such restraint, tears filled her eyes, as she stepped forward and embraced her son, “oh, Henry”
She pulled back, searching his face, “how are they?”
“Danielle did wonderfully,” Henry said, pride warming his voice, “and the princess is healthy”
“Well done, my son,” the queen said, smiling through her tears, “now go back to her”
Henry nodded and returned to the chamber, moving quickly to Danielle’s side.
“How are you feeling, my love?” he asked gently
“Tired,” she admitted, her voice soft, “but so happy”
“Your majesties, your daughter,” the nurse said, placing the swaddled infant into Danielle’s arms
Danielle’s face lit up as she gazed down at the child, “oh, Henry…look at her, she’s beautiful”
“Like her mother,” he said, his voice full of awe
Danielle smiled, her eyes shining, “she has your eyes”
As Jacqueline gathered the used towels, pausing for a moment to admire the quiet scene before her, Danielle spoke softly, “Jacqueline?”
“Yes, your majesty?”
Danielle smiled faintly, “Danielle”
Jacqueline returned the smile, “yes…Danielle?”
“We were hoping you would be her godmother”
Jacqueline’s expression warmed with emotion, “I would be honored. Thank you,” she gave a small bow before stepping out, leaving them in peace
Danielle looked down at the baby, gently rocking her, “what should we name her, Henry? Margaret, after your grandmother?”
Henry shook his head, his gaze fixed on the child, “no…she’s not a Margaret”
Danielle smiled, “then what?”
He was quiet for a moment, then said softly, “her name is Nicole”
“Nicole?” Danielle echoed
“After your mother,” he said, “she’s the reason we found our way to each other in some way”
Danielle let out a soft, tired laugh, “Nicole…” she looked down at her daughter, something certain settling in her heart, “yes…she’s a Nicole”
Henry smiled, “Nicole Augusta”
Danielle nodded, her eyes shining, “yes, it’s perfect for her. In honor of both my parents”
Henry leaned closer, wrapping an arm gently around Danielle as she cradled their daughter between them.
The early morning light spilled through the tall windows, soft and golden, as if the world itself had quieted to welcome the child.
Nicole stirred in Danielle’s arms, letting out a small, contented sigh before settling again. Danielle brushed her finger across the baby’s tiny hand, marveling at how it curled instinctively around her own.
“She already knows you,” Henry whispered
Danielle smiled faintly, but something in her expression shifted. Her gaze lowered, and after a moment, she spoke quietly, “Henry…are you disappointed?”
He frowned slightly, “disappointed?”
She hesitated, then forced the words out, “that she isn’t a boy. The court…they wanted an heir. A son,” her voice softened, “are you angry with me?”
For a brief second, Henry simply looked at her…then his expression gave way to something gentler. He reached up, lifting her chin so she would meet his eyes, “angry?” he said softly, “Danielle, look at her”
She did
“Our daughter is healthy, and you’re safe. That is all I could have asked for,” he brushed his thumb against Nicole’s cheek, his voice steady and certain, “I am not disappointed. Not even for a moment”
Danielle’s eyes filled, relief washing over her.
“She is our child,” Henry continued, a quiet pride in his voice, “and one day, if the world has any sense at all, it will see her worth far beyond something as small as expectation”
Danielle let a soft breath, the last of her worry slipping away and for a while, neither of them spoke. There was no need. The weight of the long night, the fear, the pain…it all seemed distant now, replaced by a quiet, overwhelming peace.
Outside, the palace had begun to stir with the news of the princess’s birth. Bells would soon ring, and voices would carry the announcement far beyond the castle walls. But inside the room, time felt still, as Henry, Danielle with Nicole in her arms, as her small chest rising and falling in quiet rhythm…a new beginning wrapped in warmth and hope.
The End
