Work Text:

Neptune's purrs were loud.

Uranus slowly awoke to the sensation of vibrations rumbling deep into his neck, almost ticklish if he'd been anyone else. But Uranus was not anyone else. He was Uranus.

And Uranus was used to smaller beings purring against his throat.

He couldn't help but smile, even though he wasn't fully awake yet, his own, softer purrs starting to kick in response. His cousin's purrs kicked up a notch, clearly pleased with the development- and the taller ice giant leaned back so his body cuddled more into Neptune's, stiffling a giggle as the action caused his cousin to let out a chirp. "...Mornin', mate." He murmured without opening his eyes.

The smaller responded by stubbornly smushing his face further into Uranus' side, along with the arms looped around his body squeezing more, as if trying to become one. Ah. Neptune was ready to wake up, then. That's okay.

...Uranus had missed cuddling like this.

Of course, Uranus had hugs and snuggles all the time. With his moons, his precious, delicate celestials who fit into the palms of his hands. And the ice giant loved them, he truly did, and he loved getting to kiss their pretty faces and hold them close to himself-

However, it wasn't the same as hugging a being of your own size.

Neptune wasn't heavy against his side. He was a weight, sure- but still very light, even though the taller ice giant was sure he'd been heavier before.

Perhaps it was just the lack of his jacket, he remembered when he managed to move, his hands brushing against Neptune's bare arms. The bulky jacket often made him seem bulkier than he was, while in reality Neptune barely had any mass at all.

Delicate fingers brushed over the bare skin, careful not to disturb the other. Uranus was certain Neptune was awake, based on the way he caught his tail wagging- but he didn't want to wake up yet, and neither did his cousin it seemed. So why open their eyes, and face the world so soon?

This was better.

Uranus chirped softly, letting his head fall into Neptune's hair and pressing his throat gently into the smaller's forehead. He felt the shiver that ripped through the darker's frame when he started purring again, the deep vibrations traveling from his skin straight to his core. Neptune curled up more into him in reaction, his upper body now resting on top of the larger, his tail hitting Uranus' ankles from how hard it was wagging.

Slightly free from the weight on his side, Uranus stretched his injured wings as far as they could go without pain, pleased to find they didn't seem to be hurting today. Huh. A good day, then.

Letting out a pleased churr, his left wing curled around Neptune like a blanket. He giggled when the planet's purrs grew in volume because of it. "You gonna wake up, mate?" He sleepily murmured into his hair.

"Nooooo..." Neptune whined, voice rumbly from his contented noises. He smushed his face into Uranus' sleep shirt, as if trying to make the outside world disappear. "I'm good."

Uranus snorted. "Yeah?"

"Yeah..."

Neptune always had been whiny when waking up as a child.

"Come on." He patted Neptune's back in an attempt to rouse him- but the smaller's response was to melt more into him, taking in the comforting touch happily. "Toons, we gotta wake up. Hydrate and stuff."

Hey. He remembered to take care of himself, for once. Good for you, Uranus.

"I don't want 'and stuff'." Neptune sleepily murmured, his purring calming down. Softer... and softer... until it was just a soft vibration against Uranus' shoulder. "I want you."

...

With a sigh, Uranus relented. He let himself drop back against his cousin's body, taking in the purrs that increased in volume with a smile.

Even if said purrs did start calming down again moments later, a sure sign his cousin was falling back asleep.

Not that Uranus minded. He just let his own eyes slip shut, nuzzled into Neptune's hair, and started purring again to match. "...Night, Toons."

"Night-night Ura..." the smaller yawned, already dead weight against his side. A reassuring one at that, Uranus thought, as his own chirps softened from drowsiness.

The solar system had been fine without the two of them for eons. It could wait for them just a little longer.
