Work Text:
Yelena had been driving for a long time by now. It was just her, Bob and Ava. They were on somewhat of a road trip, going to Long Island.
The plan was just a weekend in a small cabin in Montauk with a view to the beach. Everyone had to have some time off every now and then, right? So they were talking, playing games. Somewhere between 9 and 10am Bob and Ava fell asleep and Yelena just drove in silence. It was nice, you know— All of this.
Having some peace in between all the chaos. Going to the beach! Yelena honestly couldn’t remember when was the last time she took a sun bath. Of course she would come out looking like a tomato, but it was worth it.
She heard a yawn, and looked trough the rear view to the back sit, where Bob was opening his eyes.
“Mornin’ sleeping beauty” she smiled at him.
He still look confuse from sleep but he shot her a extremely cute smile. A bit later, Ava also woke up.
“Hey, wanna switch?” she asked Yelena after some time, gesturing between the two of them.“Yeah, I would like that. My butt hurts”
So they stopped on the side of the road to quickly change places, then came back to the road.
“Lena can you turn on the radio, please? I’m bored.” Bob asked.
Yelena reached for the little screen and pressed the music symbol thingy, then laid back on her sit. When the first notes of the song were registered by her brain, something changed.
Oh.
Oh.
She knew that song.
‘Something touched me deep inside. The day the music died’
“Oh.” a whisper under her breath.
‘So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie’
“What?” Bob asked. Ava shot her a side look, hands on the steering wheel.
‘Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry’
She quickly wiped the tears glistening in her eyes and smiled faintly “Uhm, It- It’s nothing”
“Lena, what’s wrong?” A hand on her shoulder. The music was still playing.
‘This’ll be the day that I die’
She wiped away tears again. Blinked to stop them from falling.
She let out a weak chuckle. “It’s nothing really.” She took a breath just a little too long “It’s just, this song… it’s my favorite. Well, it used to be. When I- uhm, when I was younger. In Ohio.”
‘Now do you believe in Rock ‘N Roll?’
“Oh.” This time it was Ava who said it.
“It’s okay, really. I used to make Natasha dance with me, in the living room. Alexei might have a film. Of us dancing, he had a camera.”
Tears streamed freely down her cheeks. It’s not that it was a bad memory, it was just… nostalgic. A warm feeling that stung and made her feel happy at the same time.
“If he has it, I really wanna see. I bet you were a really cute baby.” Bob said to her. That gained a laugh from both Lena and Ava.
“I had pretty cute curls, to be honest.” She smiled. “And probably two teeth missing, too.”
“Oh, now you will HAVE to find the video. Some photos, at least.” Ava teased.
They all laughed. Yelena wiped away the last traces of tears from her face, smiling at both of her friends. Eventually, they came back to talking about random stuff, like name options for Yelena’s new Guinea pig, but the song still played in the back of her mind.
‘Bye bye miss American pie…’
