Work Text:
It was just about time for Dave to go. He had already defeated Henry, he had already helped Dee, Peter, and Steven escape the flipside and finally rest, so why was he here when he could go with them, too? Jack had given him Blackjack, he would still be with him anyway.
“C’mon,” Jack beckoned. “You have a piece of me with you, you can do it!”
“I-I don’t know, Old Sport. I don’t think I could.” Dave mumbled into Blackjack’s fur. He was pretty tempted to just stay with Jack, but he was a savior and a matyr. He couldn’t go with them, he had already died and just needed to meet with Fredbear. “I just want to stay with you, sport, please.”
“You can still remember me with Blackjack, ok? You need to ascend and I need to get going.”
“Sport…”
Dave couldn’t really do anything after that as Jack left, and he was surrounded by nothing. He could choose to leave, he really could. He just didn’t want to move at all.
“M-my…” He couldn’t even finish his sentence and started to sob, cradling Blackjack closer to him and sitting down. That mutt was Jack, but it didn’t look like Jack, or speak like Jack, or remotely resemble Jack, it just was his soul. Were they truly the same? He couldn’t cuddle dogs, yes they were soft but they never were the same as Jack. Jack didn’t even take that long to leave. Why was he already grieving? He should just leave and go ascend, the time is right there. He didn’t have to wait for his tangerine to come back, he never would, so what was the point of staying here?
After hours of sobbing, he finally got the strength to get up. Dave looked onto the horizon where his tangerine was once there, and then went to go ascend while holding Blackjack.
I can go, he thought, I will.
