August was a very “public” person. He made speeches and inspiring displays, and made his feats as public as possible. However, he was not particularly outgoing. He sat in the grass at the park, reading a book. One would imagine this would draw attention to him, but luckily, without his jacket, people tended to ignore him (whether they were being polite or didn’t actually know it was him, he didn’t know). He sat up, noticing a woman standing over him, wearing a very fine, well tailored suit.

“Good day, August. I’ve spent a while looking for you. You are surprisingly hard to find.” She sat down in front of him, then placed a folder between them. “My name is Saha. We at Devotion would like to invite you to join us with our first generation of heroes, Terra. We can see you taking a very public role, being a… spokesperson, of sorts.” August set his book down, and turned to look at Saha, who had sat herself next to him.

“That’s kind of the point. I keep my personal life separate from my professional life. The proposition is interesting though. I’d be a hero and a spokesperson for your company. Why me?” Saha placed a second folder between them.

“I’m trying to get our mutual friend Briar to join us. Your presence would encourage him, I think. Besides, we need as many people on board as possible to keep the city safe. I won’t watch this world fall as mine did.” She set a small earpiece next to August and gathered the folders. “Contact me if you become interested.” She stood and left, leaving August to his book.

Two weeks later, August was standing in the middle of Market street, hand held out as his other worked on forming a mark. His opponent was at the next intersection, trying to push a spear of ice towards him. A glass wanderer. After Velan had fallen, their wanderers had begun appearing with new kinds of knives. Obsidian and glass. These had been clumped together, and had been attacking other worlds. The glass wander gave up on the spear, letting it fall as they charged at August, who was now fully focused on their mark. The glass wanderer jumped into the air, then began to fall towards August, but the mark was finished, and August held his hands up, hair flashing a brighter red as the glass wanderer fell onto the street unconscious. August stepped over to them, kneeling as he opened their cloak. He noticed it too late. So focused on Velanic artifacts, he didn’t notice the second one opening a rip above him, descending on him, knife held straight. But the knife never connected with its target. The second glass wanderer hit the street with enough force to destroy the asphalt around the impact. August looked up to see a figure in the air, wings flapping and keeping him hovering there. The figure looked down.

“You’re getting clumsy, Avine.” August laughed a little.

“You manage to have perfect timing as ever, Briar. Although I don’t think I needed your help.” The Harpy floated down, pulling August up to his feet.

“You were about to get knifed in the back. You’re lucky I made it here in time.” August just scoffed.

“You still up for dinner tonight?” August asked, and Briar nodded.

“Good.” August nodded as Briar flew off. He pulled the earpiece from his pocket and considered it, as he did after every fight. This time, he put it in.

“Saha? Can you hear me?” He asked as he gathered the Glass wanderers bodies. He heard Saha through the other end.

“Yes, August. I can hear you.” She responded.

“Good. I’m ready to work at Devotion.”
