spArk VLOG: A Day in the Life of spArk~ ☆ Breakfast Time!

Summary:

The screen turns on again, opening to a closeup of Kim Iwol’s face. His bedhair is somewhat tamed now, coming off as tousled rather than messy; his eyes are a lot more alert, even if there’s still some guck on his lower eyelids. He smiles at the camera, but his voice is muted, bordering on a whisper.

“Good morning, Sparklers,” he says, his voice sleep-rough and raspy. “The other members are still asleep, and they’re very tired from the performance yesterday, so let’s let them sleep in for a little while longer.”

spArk VLOG: A Day in the Life of spArk~ ☆ Breakfast Time!

### 4:17AM KST

### spArk’s Dormitory

[Today, at spArk’s dormitory, where everyone is still fast asleep...]

Calm, soothing music plays gently in the background. The camera centers in on the shared common space between the kitchen and the living room, lit by a lone nightlight in the kitchen. Patterned curtains are partially tossed open, showing the dark blue sky outside– still in the throes of an early, hazy morning. Even in the dark, spArk’s random knickknacks and half-finished projects are evident, making the dormitory feel cozy and lived in.

Then, there are quiet, careful footsteps padding through the hallway. The music lowers in volume, turning softer, barely audible among the confused sound effects.

[???]

[Who could possibly be awake at this hour...?]

The lights in the kitchen turn on, revealing a groggy Kim Iwol, with his bedhead sticking up on all sides comically. He yawns, taking a moment to adjust his vision to the brightness, then walks over to shut off the nightlight.

[Ah. Good morning, Kim Iwol! We hope you slept well.]

Then, below, in smaller and yellow-colored font:

[Editor’s Note: ...if you even slept at all, Iwol-yah... Let’s hope our lord and savior Jeong Seongbin doesn’t scold you...]

[Spoiler Alert: He got scolded.]

The camera zooms in, fades away slowly, then shuts off.

Kim Iwol adjusts the camera’s position, squinting as he tries to balance it on the kitchen counter. He runs his hands through his hair, trying to tame the wild strands– it’s a good thing that his hair hasn’t been completely fried by bleach and dye, so fixing it quickly in the morning is somewhat manageable.

It’s times like these that he’s a little resentful about not being able to ingest caffeine. While he’d been planning this vlog for several weeks now, he was caught up with his other responsibilities (including, but not limited to: planning spArk’s stage for an award show, preempting an attitude scandal with Kang Kiyeon, planning a vacation for the kids, monitoring the reactions to their latest variety show appearances, monitoring the reaction to his appearance in a drama, and more) that he wasn’t able to completely prepare everything for the vlog ahead of time.

As such, he had to do a lot of last-minute preparation to ensure that it would go smoothly. Or in other words: he hasn’t slept. At all.

Jeong Seongbin is going to look at him all disappointed, and Kim Iwol will have another mark on Jeong Seongbin’s notebook, and he’s going to get scolded. This ahjussi is mildly terrified of being scolded by their leader, really.

Hopefully, Jeong Seongbin will be more understanding this time...

Kim Iwol sighs, then turns the camera on.

### spArk’s Kitchen

### STARRING: Early Riser Kim Iwol, Early Runner Choi Jeho

The screen turns on again, opening to a closeup of Kim Iwol’s face. His bedhair is somewhat tamed now, coming off as tousled rather than messy; his eyes are a lot more alert, even if there’s still some guck on his lower eyelids. He smiles at the camera, but his voice is muted, bordering on a whisper.

“Good morning, Sparklers,” he says, his voice sleep-rough and raspy. “The other members are still asleep, and they’re very tired from the performance yesterday, so let’s let them sleep in for a little while longer.”

The camera shifts, now showing Kim Iwol’s side profile and the stove. “Cheonghyeon and Kiyeon have school today,” he says conversationally, taking out a loaf of bread, rice, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, eggs, and frozen chicken from the refrigerator. “I know they have school lunches, but I still like to pack them snacks just in case.”

Kim Iwol’s voice trails off to a yawn. He stares at the wall for a moment, trying to regain his bearings. He shakes his head, picking up a basin to fill it halfway with water. He washes the vegetables thoroughly, individually cleaning the leaves and florets.

“We’re making cauliflower rice,” Kim Iwol says, his voice still quiet, reaching out for the cutting board and a knife. “I’ll mix it with normal rice in a 1:4 ratio, so the kids can eat as much as they want without feeling guilty.”

He pats the cauliflower florets dry, then cuts them into large pieces. He washes them again, just to be sure that they’re clean, dries them for the second time, and sets them aside. In the meantime, he cooks up rice and roasts sweet potatoes, preparing shredded cabbage and avocado for the salads.

The next minutes are spent following Kim Iwol as he cooks, capturing the dedicated focus and ease as he organizes six sets of breakfast and lunch. It’s obvious how he’s taking great care in making sure every member is accounted for.

“Joowoo prefers no dressing in his salads,” Kim Iwol explains, leaving the roasted sweet potatoes to cool for a bit. “His tastebuds are sensitive, so I try to keep his portions mild, but still as nutritious. He doesn’t mind eating avocado, but he definitely prefers eating it separate from the salad.”

“Kiyeon generally doesn’t like bitter things, but Cheonghyeon does.” Kim Iwol fishes out containers from the kitchen cabinets, not even straining to reach them despite the height. “So I tend to give Cheonghyeon more arugula and Kiyeon more lettuce. Otherwise, they’d pick it off and try to sneak what they don’t want into each other’s plates, when they think I’m not looking.”

“Seongbin and Jeho aren’t particular with their food, so they don’t really mind anything.” Kim Iwol takes out the defrosted chicken breasts from the basin, removing them from the plastic bag. “Jeho does ask for more protein though, since he works out regularly.”

“What about me?” Choi Jeho’s voice comes out deeper and rougher than normal. He’s out of the camera’s range. “You’re recording yourself cooking?”

“It’s for the vlog,” Kim Iwol tells him, then the camera is adjusted so it captures both of them cleanly. “Are you heading out for a jog? In those clothes?”

Choi Jeho, dressed in a plain shirt and loose pants and an unfairly handsome face, shakes his head. “No. I was planning on getting water first before I change.” He glances at the kitchen counter. “Are you making lunch too? It’d be busy later, so we won’t have time to eat a full meal.”

“That’s for breakfast,” Kim Iwol says, handing Choi Jeho a glass of water. “Kiyeon has a test later, so he needs to eat well. The salad’s for lunch.”

Choi Jeho drinks it quickly. “Thanks. Do you need me to grab anything while I’m out? We’re nearly out of salt, I checked.”

“Yes, thank you.” Kim Iwol rechecks his ingredients, finding them satisfactory enough for today’s meals. “Oh, and a one-half illustration board, too. Cheonghyeon was tasked to bring one for his group project; I think he forgot, with everything that’s been going on lately.”

“Alright,” Choi Jeho agrees. He leaves after returning the emptied glass to Kim Iwol.

The camera returns to its previous position, and Kim Iwol similarly returns to cooking. There’s little to no interruption after, and the vlog remains wonderfully warm, the ambient sounds of a working kitchen accompanying Kim Iwol’s movements.

Choi Jeho returns after twenty minutes, looking refreshed and clean. He hasn’t taken a shower just yet– but it’s obvious that he’d washed his face and brushed his teeth and applied sunscreen, like Kim Iwol keeps telling him to.

Kim Iwol nods approvingly at the warm, appropriate running clothes Choi Jeho is running. If Choi Jeho got sick because he was running in light clothes in this cold weather– Kim Iwol would scold him until his ears rang.

“Stay safe,” Kim Iwol calls out, watching as Choi Jeho puts his running shoes on. “Do you have your phone with you? Keys? Water?”

“Yes, and yes,” Choi Jeho says. He stands fully, stretching right at the entryway, shaking his legs to warm them up. He glances back at Kim Iwol. “Take a warm shower. Your muscles look tense.”

Then, in true Choi Jeho fashion, he leaves without saying another word.

Kim Iwol rolls his shoulders back instinctively, and immediately grimaces at the soreness. Okay, Choi Jeho has a point. He might have to massage his back later or douse it in essential oils. Luckily, they only have vocal practice in the afternoon.

Mindful of the camera, he finishes tossing the salad with light olive oil, adding in the cooled sweet potatoes, then avocado and a lemon drizzle to four of the servings. He adds a lot more chicken to presumably Choi Jeho’s box, arranging it neatly to one side.

He makes an effort to smile brightly. “Here are our lunches!” Kim Iwol says, showing off the five boxes. “I tried to make them look good, but normally they’re a lot less cohesive and more thrown in. I’ll be packing bread too, I’m just not sure if I should toast them or not.”

Cold toasted bread does not taste good. But at the same time, plain bread isn’t really the most exciting thing to eat after weeks’ worth of hard work (sorry, Joowoo, Kim Iwol has nothing against your preferences– in fact, he likes plain bread too!). Not that the kids will complain– they’re very considerate and thoughtful in that regard. Still, Kim Iwol dislikes it if they force themselves to eat just because they should.

He tosses whatever’s left of the salad ingredients to his own box. It tastes the same either way, and now that he’s shown the finished lunchboxes, it doesn’t matter anymore; that clip’s done and dusted. He partially closes all of the boxes, setting them aside to be packed when they leave.

The sound of the shower running distracts him from the task on hand. Kim Iwol glances up, thoughtful, then returns his gaze to the camera. “I guess Seongbin is awake,” he says, listening to the sound of water running. “Kiyeon’s usually up by now, but he was completely worn out last night. Joowoo tends to crash after a heavy performance, so I’ll have to wake him up later.”

He does want to let them sleep in, but their schedule for the next three months is questionable. He’ll just have to lobby for a two-week-long vacation for them, once the year-end award show is over.

If management doesn’t approve it, then he can go straight to the CEO and air out his grievances. Politely, of course. It pays to have connections to the top offices; now that Kim Iwol has a direct line to most of UA’s upper management, he can appreciate that line in its entirety.

“We’ll have to hurry before all of the kids wake up,” Kim Iwol says. He rummages through the cabinets, taking out a food processor. He positions it so it can be seen on camera, but hides the logo and product information away. “UA bought us a lot of housewarming gifts! This is one of them. It’s quieter than what we previously had, so I’m really thankful for it.”

He takes the cauliflower he set aside earlier, then adds and pulses them in batches. Every now and then, he pauses to check if the sound is too noisy– but the food processor really is quieter than the standard, so the noise isn’t audible in the members’ bedrooms. Hopefully. Whoever’s in the shower might hear it, though.

Then, here is where his preparations bore fruit: the kimchi he made weeks prior and the coconut sauce he made early in the morning. He made a separate, milder one for Park Joowoo, and Park Joowoo himself approved of the taste, so hopefully all of the kids will enjoy it.

It is a little heavier than their usual fare, but they’ll all burn it up during the workout session Choi Jeho’s hosting, anyway.

Kim Iwol did badger Choi Jeho into lowering the intensity of the workout, mindful of Park Joowoo’s and Jeong Seongbin’s current states. Kim Iwol can handle it, of course, but the kids might not. There’s no need to go all-out in this scenario; their goal is for the vlog to establish spArk as a close, tight-knit group and show off their camaraderie and unique personalities.

(Or, in Choi Jeho’s case, his body and skill. It’s a fool’s errand to force a log to emote like a human would. It’s just simply not possible.)

Kim Iwol talks aloud, shifting his position so the camera can capture his angles better. He’s trying his best not to have any dead air in the stream; while ASMR is popular and all, a vlog shouldn’t be boring, but it also shouldn’t be too explosive.

He dutifully follows the recipe he scoured the internet over, tweaking the ingredients a bit to accommodate spArk’s dietary needs. It’s just a kimchi rice bowl. It should be easy enough to follow. Kind of.

Here’s hoping Kim Iwol doesn’t jinx himself, like he usually does.

### 5:33AM KST

### spArk’s Kitchen

### STARRING: Will-Get-Scolded Kim Iwol, God of Judgment Jeong Seongbin

“Hyung? Are you there?”

Offscreen, Jeong Seongbin enters the kitchen, patting his hair dry with a towel. He’s unsurprised that Kim Iwol’s already working this early on, taking a seat on the dining table. The camera angle is adjusted accordingly to capture both of them.

“Good morning, hyung,” Jeong Seongbin greets, already put-together and coherent this early in the morning. He pats his hair even more, trying to drain out the water. “Did Jeho-hyung go for a run?”

“Yeah. Good morning, Seongbin. Did you sleep well?”

Jeong Seongbin does this thing that Sparklers have come to acknowledge as the sweetest look of judgment possible. “I did,” he says gently. Then, without preamble, he asks, “How long have you been awake, hyung?”

Kim Iwol, tellingly, does not respond. “Can you try this?” he asks, offering some of the cauliflower rice with the coconut sauce. “Is it good?”

Jeong Seongbin graciously lets the matter go. He takes the spoon from Kim Iwol’s hands and chews, testing out the flavor. “It’s really good,” he says admiringly. “Is that the kimchi you made three weeks ago? And mushrooms?” That’s a lot, he doesn’t say.

“Mhm. Don’t worry, I calculated. Consider this motivation for Choi Jeho’s workout session from hell. And the lunchboxes are a reward for surviving said workout session from hell.”

Jeong Seongbin, despite his long years of media training and experience as a leader, grimaces. “Right. Thanks, hyung. For reminding me.”

“It will be alright,” Kim Iwol reassures him. “I already asked Jeho to lower the intensity, and he agreed.”

Jeong Seongbin’s face doesn’t quite lose the tension and deep-seated fatigue, but he does ease up a bit, and especially once he sees the contents of the packed lunchboxes. “Hyung, if you start to sleep well and keep a proper work-life balance, Cheonghyeon and I will dedicate a shrine to you.”

“What?” Kim Iwol asks, but Jeong Seongbin only waves at the camera before he leaves.

...Choi Jeho is a really bad influence on them, huh.

Several things happen in succession: Kiyeon wakes up next, then Cheonghyeon. They have a mild argument– it’s less of an argument and more of banter, really– over who gets to shower first. It’s a ridiculous argument, because they have two unoccupied bathrooms in the dorm.

Kim Iwol doesn’t point it out, because the kids do need to fulfill their urge to disagree with someone and fight them about it. Being an idol is exhausting, and spArk’s image means that the members have to be squeaky-clean and polite. Kim Iwol himself would’ve been pent up and frothing at the mouth if it weren’t for his experiences in a certain company.

After deciding the order of the shower usage, the maknaes busy themselves with preparing their backpacks for school, so Kim Iwol leaves them be. He’s here to check up on Joowoo mostly. Joowoo is strangely still asleep, so Kim Iwol covers their breakfast with lids and heads to wake Joowoo up.

“Joowoo?” Kim Iwol knocks on the door softly. He opens it, finding a lump underneath a ton of blankets. “Joowoo? It’s time for breakfast. Are you alright?”

Joowoo groans, long and miserable. Kim Iwol is by his side in an instant, surprising even himself. “What’s wrong?”

“Head hurts,” Joowoo mumbles, his forehead creased. He’s not sweating, even under that many blankets. “Body hurts. I’m kind of nauseous.”

Kim Iwol hurries to take a thermometer from the first aid kits he stashed in every room in the dormitory. He checks Joowoo’s temperature, relieved to see it a normal, not-worrying-at-all thirty-six point one degrees Celsius.

“I’m not sick, hyung,” Joowoo tells him, his intonation clearer now. He peeks up at Kim Iwol, squinting a little. Kim Iwol hurriedly closes all of the curtains, and Joowoo relaxes at once. “I’m just really tired. I’ll be better with some water and a painkiller.”

“Do you want to have breakfast in your room? Or do you want me to make soup?” Kim Iwol says, pitching his voice lower.

Joowoo shakes his head. “It’s okay. As long as no one starts belting out songs in falsetto, I’ll be able to manage. I need to eat, anyway. I’ll be down soon.”

“Alright,” Kim Iwol accepts. Joowoo can be trusted with his own well-being, he’s found. “Call me if you need anything.”

Joowoo gives him a thumbs up, then closes his eyes again. Kim Iwol closes the door gently behind him as he leaves.

### 6:12AM KST

### spArk’s Dining Room

### STARRING: Group Project Master Lee Cheonghyeon, Tired High Schooler Kang Kiyeon, Stone Heart Kim Iwol, Errand Runner Choi Jeho

The camera is positioned somewhere high up, showing the full view of the dining table and the spArk members arriving. The noise reduction is turned on, so the members’ voices sound clearer.

“Food, food, food,” Lee Cheonghyeon chants. His recently blow-dried hair falls in perfect waves, framing the most beautiful face in existence. Said face is carved into a charming smile. “Wow, that looks amazing, hyung! You’re on fire today!”

Kang Kiyeon stumbles after him, righting himself before he trips. His uniform is pressed, neat, and tidy. “Oh, wow,” he says, amazed. “That smells so good, hyung!”

“You’re both not allowed to skip school today,” Kim Iwol says sternly. “Kiyeon, you have a science test. Cheonghyeon, you have a group project.”

Both of them deflate instantly.

“I’m already passing science, though,” Kang Kiyeon tries to argue, nearly flopping over the dining table in his efforts to convince Kim Iwol. “One test won’t make that much of a difference.”

“Kiyeon, don’t raise my blood pressure this early in the morning.”

Kang Kiyeon deflates even further.

“Um,” Lee Cheonghyeon begins, looking sheepish and a tiny bit panicked. “About that project...”

Kim Iwol nods. “You need a one-half illustration board, right? Jeho said that he’ll buy one during his morning run.”

Lee Cheonghyeon sags in relief. It’s a testament to how exhausted he is, when he simply lays his head on the table and tries to get a few more minutes of rest. On the other hand, Kang Kiyeon straightens up and begins setting the table, poking and prodding at Lee Cheonghyeon until the composer relents and lets Kang Kiyeon add a plate and utensils on his part of the table.

“I’m back,” Choi Jeho announces, his voice echoing even from the entryway. He takes off his shoes, nudging the board in Lee Cheonghyeon’s direction. “Here. It’s the correct size, right?”

Lee Cheonghyeon hurries over to take the board. “Yeah! Thanks a lot, hyung. It’s the correct size– oh, you bought two?”

Choi Jeho shakes his head, placing down his water bottle on the table. “The storeowner wanted to give me an extra one. I don’t know why, but free things are good.”

“Ah,” Kim Iwol says, a sound torn between appreciation and doubt. “You thanked them, right...?”

Choi Jeho throws Kim Iwol a disgruntled look. “I did,” he says dryly. “I have manners.”

“Right.” Kim Iwol nods, mollified. “I’m sorry, Choi Jeho’s noona. I shouldn’t have doubted your child-rearing skills. I will atone for my mistakes.”

Choi Jeho, looking rather done with this conversation and Kim Iwol in general, just moves along to take a shower. Lee Cheonghyeon and Kang Kiyeon snicker.

### 6:27AM KST

### spArk’s Dining Room

### STARRING: Cauliflower God Park Joowoo, Cauliflower Disciples spArk

Park Joowoo heads down to the dining room, fresh from a shower and looking less wan. He smiles in greeting, waving a hand to the camera before his attention is caught by Lee Cheonghyeon’s attempts at scooping cauliflower rice with chopsticks.

“I don’t think that can work,” Park Joowoo says, amused. “Cauliflower rice doesn’t clump together like normal rice does.”

“I can do it,” Lee Cheonghyeon insists. “There’s sauce! That should count for something, right?”

Park Joowoo, full of casual grace, tries his hand at it, and successfully scoops up a biteful of rice from his designated bowl. He chews, silent, and nods in joy. “It tastes good, Iwol-hyung,” he says happily. “The sauce is perfect.”

Lee Cheonghyeon stares, agape.

“I’m glad to hear it,” Kim Iwol says, pleased. He turns to the hallway, walking a few steps forward to call out, “Jeho, time to eat! Hurry up!”

“Just a minute, I’m drying my hair,” Choi Jeho’s voice is loud, echoing through the hallway. “Done. Is Joowoo awake?”

“Good morning, hyung!” Park Joowoo calls out.

Choi Jeho appears, already wearing his workout clothes. “Where’s Seongbin?” he asks. “Did he go somewhere?”

“Manager-hyung called about his photoshoot,” Kim Iwol answers, adding a healthy amount of rice into everyone’s bowls. “I think it’s been delayed, so Seongbin might be able to join Joowoo’s segment later.”

Jeong Seongbin chooses that moment to walk in, his focus halved between the floor in front of him and the phone. “It’s alright, Han-ssi,” Jeong Seongbin is saying. “No, no, it’s not a big deal. I understand the circumstances– yes, hyung will be in contact with you shortly. Yes. Thank you! Please take care.”

The call disconnects. Jeong Seongbin beams, completely pleased by the sudden turn of events. “My photoshoot’s been delayed by two days– there was a problem with the equipment,” he explains. “So, I’ll be able to join everyone's segments!”

There’s the appropriate round of cheering and applause. Once they’ve all settled down, they’re ushered to sit and finally begin eating.

It’s organized chaos. Kim Iwol is doing his best to wrangle everyone into eating all of their portions and coaxing Lee Cheonghyeon and Kang Kiyeon into drinking the warm milk. It’s all well and good, but then–

“I think we should use chopsticks instead of a spoon and fork,” Lee Cheonghyeon says, dead serious. “We need to stay in touch with our roots!”

“It’s hard to pick up the rice with chopsticks–”

“Joowoo-hyung could do it!”

Because Park Joowoo is sometimes an enabler, he demonstrates after Lee Cheonghyeon’s passionate statement, and begins eating with chopsticks. Kang Kiyeon attempts it and fails. Some of his mushrooms land on the table with a sad thump. Jeong Seongbin gives it a try and manages to get the kimchi and the chicken, but none of the rice.

Then, there are shouts, Choi Jeho nearly knocks the table over, there’s sauce everywhere, Jeong Seongbin is trying to restore order but his wide grin gives him away, and Kim Iwol simply gives up and joins the chaos.

Park Joowoo, of course, wins by a landslide.

All in all, it is just a simple, normal day, in spArk’s life.

### 7:15AM KST

### Outside spArk’s Dormitory

### STARRING: spArk, Ready for an Adventure!

“Is everyone here? No one forgot anything?” Kim Iwol double checks again, glancing at everyone’s bags. “Joowoo, I have the motion sickness pills and painkillers if you need them. Cheonghyeon, did you bring everything needed for your project? Kiyeon, your ID–”

“Yes!” Lee Cheonghyeon answers, in the middle of trying to fit the illustration board into one of the cars. “This is the last of it.”

“It’s in my bag, hyung,” Kang Kiyeon answers.

“Jeho–?” Kim Iwol swivels around, spotting Choi Jeho chilling in the car, all ready to go. “Seongbin?”

“Here! All the windows are locked, I have the keys,” Jeong Seongbin says, locking the door shut. He tests it for good measure, then steps forward. “Everyone ready?”

“Yeah!”
