“Are they gone?” came a quiet voice from behind the barrel.
“I think so,” replied Zelda, peering around the corner. She heard a slight scuff of a boot behind her, then Link was pressing himself between her side and the wall, trying to get a peek into the next room while keeping himself hidden.
She turned to look at her friend where he crouched beside her. “You know, we don't have to sneak around. I can tell them off if they give you trouble.”
“I know, but they make you so mad.” Link reached to grab her hand, then looked up at her with those big blue eyes of his. “Today should just be about the two of us.”
He straightened, pulling her hand to his heart to give it a squeeze, a soft smile on his lips. Zelda felt her own lips falling into a surprised ‘o’ as Link looked at her. His eyes sparkled then he dropped her hand and darted around the corner.
For a moment, she stood frozen, her heart hammering all out of proportion, face heating, before she smiled and moved to follow him for whatever adventure he had planned.
