Work Text:

Freesmart was walking down one of the many barely standing roads in Yoylecity. They were the loudest thing in the city. Their voices and laughs echoing throughout the abandoned streets. Talking and gossiping about ..Spongy.. (EWEWEWEWWWW!!) Talking about how ugly and pimply and greasy his hair is!!

As they were walking, they passed by a park with many sprouting trees clustered. One of which, holding something shiny hanging in its branches. Match. Needed it!! Anything that shines and hangs is basically made for her!! She has so. Many. Necklaces! And what Match wants, Match is gonna get!! She abruptly ran over to the tree and jumped to try and get the supposed necklace. Being way too short to get it she didn't actually know if it was a necklace though. The angle wasnt helping.. “Hey Pence Pence!!!! Can you like, come here??” She yelled as the rest of Freesmart was watching as their friend was jumping for some useless necklace.

Pencil walked over to her girlfriend and asked, “Yeah what's up?” “I like, need to pick you up so you can get that necklace for me!!” match asked in a demanding tone. Pencil looked up at the necklace and back at match, match was quite tall and so was Pencil but… Pencil wouldn't say that match was strong.. She could barely carry a milk jug for longer than a minute. Before she could say anything, Match was already crouched down “like, get on!!” Hesitantly, Pencil sat on Matches shoulders and waited for her to get lifted. Match started lifting Pencil, but she could barely lift her above a foot.

Match dropped Pencil for a moment and tried again, she didn't get much higher. “Are you sure I can't just pick you up?” Pencil asked, feeling bad for Match. “N-no I'm fine! I'm gonna pick you up soon! Just watch!” Match replied in forced confidence. Trying again with the same result. Book finally stepped beside Match, opening one of the pages in her jacket.

“Well, I am a ‘lifting heavy things’ handbook and it says here that you should straighten out your back and try to use your knees when lifting rather than relying on your back! Oh and Pencil, hold onto Matches neck, you might fall over!”

Pencil noted that the page book is pointing to is about piggyback rides when Pencil is on Matches shoulders. Wait, wouldn't that be in a different part of Book?? Whatever. Match tried the new technique, shifting her back out of a semi-slouch. She tried lifting Pencil up one more time. And she did it! Match was fully standing up!! A bit wobbly but she was able to pick up Pence Pence!!!! Pencil let go of the top of matches head and reached up to grab the necklace. Pencil had it in her grasp, she just needed it off of the branch “can you move back a little bit?” Pencil requested.

Match tried backing up one step, just one step but she lost her balance and fell backwards. Pencil and Match shrieked as they both hit the grassy floor. Pencils hat falling on her face.

“Owwww!!!!!” Match yelled as pencil emerged from behind her whiney girlfriend. And held something out. It was the necklace! Match immediately shut up and ooohed and ahhhed at the beauty of it. Except it wasn't a regular necklace. Instead, it was a pink heart locket on a golden chain. Inside was an old picture with a blurry image that match couldn't make out. Whatever!! Match picked up the locket, took the paper out and shoved it in her pocket. While she didn't care for the picture. She knew better than to litter. “One sec, sorry pencil i have an idea!! See you like, later!!!!”

Match waved her friends goodbye as she ran over to Golf Balls' new improvised factory. She wandered into the new factory and walked up the long staircase, when she got to the room she opened the door. She saw golf ball welding, she covered her eyes to not go blind and stayed back. Worried her clothes would get set on fire. Once gb was done, Match uncovered her eyes and asked, “Can I like, borrow one of your cameras?” Golf all looked at her shelf of many inventions. “Hmm well i cannot trust you to not break anything as you have broken my trust many times.”

Match looked down. She still meant everything she previously said in BFDIA. She just wanted to look guilty so that Golf Ball might give Match her camera. “But I would like to believe you are trying to improve as I have not seen or talked to you in a while. So I will let you borrow my camera.” Golf Ball clarified as she walked over to her shelf. Grabbing a clunky square contraption with a slit at the bottom, a lens and a button at the top “Here. But give it back at the end of the day!” Golfball handed match the camera and went back at it.

Match slipped out of the factory and went back to the park. She waited on one of the benches. Eventually, Freesmart came on the same route they originally had match looked waited for the perfect moment and took a picture of Pencil. Though, it probably would have been better if she was closer. She waited for the picture to print out. Once it did, she took the picture, folded it up and shoved it in her locket. Afterwards, she put down the camera and tied the necklace around her neck, and went back to return the camera after a small conversation with Freesmart.

When she arrived. She quietly placed the camera on one of the tables next to the door and left. Holding the locket at her heart and leaving to go join her friends again.

Match recalled that memory fondly as she sat on the floor beside one of the mutated trees as X slept. Where she would usually be chatting with Pencil in the sun, she was instead basically alone in the dark with black ink in the sky blocking out any light from the stars or sun. Making sight nearly impossible. She opened the locket and unfolded the picture. tears swelling in her eyes as she also recalled on when she watched pencil disappeared on the massive screen in the recording studio.

Match carefully folded the paper again and put it back on the locket. She held it close to her chest and pulled her knees to her chest. matchstick factory, she missed pencil. She missed Pencil a lot. Match was going to find her! But as her eyelids started to grow heavy, she laid down and wiped her eyes from their tears. "Like, goodnight Pencil! Tomorrow I'll get to the hotel and see you again!" Match whispered to herself as she began to drift into a deep sleep.
