Work Text:
"Hey, Alchemist Cookie! It’s been a while!"
On her way to the general store just as it opened for the morning, a nostalgic voice caught her ear, making her stop in her tracks.
She turned around to find Yogurt Cream Cookie standing there—a cookie who was supposed to be far away in the desert nation of Yogurca. The large blue gem fastening his cream turban shimmered in the sunlight, looking quite out of place in this simple, rustic kingdom.
Alchemist Cookie smiled, her expression a mix of surprise and genuine joy.
"It’s rare to see you being the one to make the trip."
When she had visited his vast palace, she thought a cookie living in such a mansion would have nothing to do with their humble little kingdom. To think they would reunite in a place like this!
He was the son of a merchant tycoon from Yogurca, a desert oasis—essentially, he was incredibly wealthy. Given his status, he wasn't exactly the type of person you'd expect to find wandering around here.
As if sensing her thoughts, he gave a troubled smile.
"I was just so bored. I had to do a bit of haggling to get them to let me on the merchant ship. Think of it as a little vacation."
Alchemist Cookie smiled, remembering his free-spirited nature.
"I suppose being shut up in that palace all day would be boring."
"Exactly!" he nodded vigorously, agreeing from the bottom of his heart. However, a shadow of lingering boredom still flickered across his face. "Though, since the merchant guild is the priority this time, I can't exactly run around as much as I'd like... but I'm just happy I got to see you!"
His carefree grin was infectious, and Alchemist Cookie found herself beaming back at him.
Yogurt Cream Cookie began to look around the area with curiosity, his gaze drifting from the cookies passing by to the buildings the citizens had worked so hard to raise.
"By the way... is this your kingdom?"
"It is. It’s a kingdom we all dreamed up and built together."
Alchemist Cookie nodded proudly, taking in the scenery around them. It had started small, but thanks to the efforts of her companions, it had grown into a home—a place where she was finally free to pursue her research.
Yogurt Cream Cookie’s eyes sparkled as he spread his arms wide with innocent excitement.
"That’s amazing! You have to show me around!"
"Of course, I’d love to! ...But I'm sorry, could we do it after noon?"
Alchemist Cookie’s expression softened into an apologetic frown. She didn't have time for a long chat right now; she had a busy schedule starting this morning and was currently on her way to the store to prepare.
"Are you headed somewhere?"
"I’m going to the valley near the kingdom today to gather materials for an experiment."
Upon hearing this, Yogurt Cream Cookie looked intrigued and immediately chimed in.
"I’m free right now, so mind if I tag along?"
"Eh? Well... I’m meeting another cookie there, is that alright?"
She agreed, though the face of a certain prickly, difficult companion flashed through her mind for a moment.
"I don't mind at all! Oh, and don't worry about protection. Right?"
At his master's glance, Lilac Cookie, who was standing silently behind him, shifted his gaze toward the wealthy cookie. While remaining alert to his surroundings, he stayed perfectly loyal to his master's whim.
"See?"
Yogurt Cream Cookie gave a wink. Lilac Cookie didn’t change his expression once, returning his focus to the perimeter. He was a cookie of few words, making it impossible to read his thoughts.
Yet, somehow, he and Yogurt Cream Cookie seemed to understand each other perfectly. Whether it was a testament to their bond or simply the master moving at his own pace remained a mystery.
Alchemist Cookie gave a small shrug.
"Same as always, I see..."
"So... that’s why they’ll be joining us."
"Sigh..."
He stared at the pair standing before him with a look of pure bewilderment. A tycoon dressed in a snow-white cream turban and high-quality silks, accompanied by his guard.
No matter how you looked at them, they were the last people you'd expect to see in a group heading to a valley to gather research specimens.
"A multi-millionaire going weed-pulling...?"
"Is he an acquaintance of yours, Alchemist Cookie?"
Wizard Cookie muttered a small, sarcastic remark. To him, it felt as though their noble research was being treated like a mere pastime to cure a rich man's boredom.
However, Yogurt Cream Cookie seemed completely oblivious to the cold stare, asking his question with an innocent, bright smile.
Alchemist Cookie gave a wry smile at the contrast between the two and nodded as she introduced Wizard Cookie.
"Yes. This is Wizard Cookie. He’s a mage I often conduct research with."
"Oh! So you're a wizard! Many of my vassals are quite skilled in magic, you see, so I know a thing or two about it myself. I’m looking forward to working with you!"
Faced with someone who spoke of his servants' magical prowess as if it were his own knowledge, Wizard Cookie replied with a hint of hesitation.
"Y-yeah... nice to meet you..."
The little researchers stepped into the forest near the kingdom that led toward the valley.
A chilly breeze brushed against their skin as the thick, lush canopy of trees overhead blotted out the sky. Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the branches, dappling the ground in a mosaic of light and shadow. The distant chirping of birds echoed through the air, accompanied by the faint, earthy scent of damp soil.
"What kind of materials are we looking for?"
"Herbs and mushrooms this time."
In response to Yogurt Cream Cookie’s curiosity, Alchemist Cookie answered while slowing her pace to scan the surroundings. Deep within the valley at the heart of the forest lay the precious ingredients they sought.
"But there are tons of them growing right around here!"
Yogurt Cream Cookie exclaimed, delighted to find various weeds and mushrooms peeking out from beneath his feet.
"Not just any kind will do. You have to look closely and pick the right ones."
Alchemist Cookie moved forward cautiously, tracing the shape of the leaves and the color of the stems with her fingers as if to confirm their identity. Her gaze was sharp and focused—the true look of a dedicated researcher.
"It's like a treasure hunt!"
Yogurt Cream Cookie said playfully. To him, it clearly felt like they were just playing a game.
As they ventured deeper into the woods, the humid air grew even thicker. The towering trees stood like walls, creating a stillness that made it feel as though they had strayed into another world.
"...Oh, look. There's some growing already."
Alchemist Cookie’s eyes landed on a small herb growing all by itself. However, Wizard Cookie, who was walking ahead, shook his head without stopping.
"The ones around here are too small. We'll find better ones where we're headed."
At his word, Alchemist Cookie gave a brief "I see" and followed after him. Yogurt Cream Cookie, meanwhile, stayed behind for a moment to curiously observe the tiny herb Wizard Cookie had dismissed.
"Hmm... so this is what you’re after."
Taking it as a reference, Yogurt Cream Cookie plucked a single stalk of the herb.
Shafts of slender light pierced through the gaps in the dense canopy as the path led them from the heart of the forest toward the valley. Moss-covered rocks lay scattered at their feet, and the scent of damp earth hung heavy in the air.
After descending for a while, they finally reached their destination.
"This is the spot. Look, I’ve already found some great specimens."
Where Wizard Cookie pointed, clusters of magnificent herbs and rare mushrooms were growing in abundance. Their leaves shimmered a deep green in the dappled sunlight, and morning dew glistened on the caps of the mushrooms.
"Whoa! Incredible! I can't believe you found such a hidden gem! I have to take notes..."
Alchemist Cookie scribbled the location into her research journal with visible excitement. For her research, this spot would provide invaluable data.
"I’ll help, too! It’s these ones from before, right?"
Yogurt Cream Cookie crouched down, and with the herb he had plucked earlier still in one hand, he began picking the plants at his feet. Alchemist Cookie watched him with a slightly bewildered, awkward smile.
"Thanks! ...But really, you don't have to push yourself."
As she spoke, she reached for a long, slender brown mushroom growing at the base of a tree. Yogurt Cream Cookie, turning back to tell her it was no trouble at all, noticed the mushroom in her hand and murmured, "Are we gathering those, too?"
"...Don't."
Lilac Cookie, who usually had no intention of interfering with his master's whims, frowned and tried to stop him. However, his voice was so low and quiet that it was swallowed by a sigh and the rustling sound of his master parting the leaves.
After a while...
The wind rustled the leaves, sending a quiet murmur through the forest. But amidst that gentle sound, the frantic rustling of grass drew rapidly closer.
"Look! What do you think? I gathered so many!"
"Oh! Thank you! ...Ah..."
Yogurt Cream Cookie beamed, proudly showing off the handfuls of herbs and mushrooms he had picked. However, seeing Alchemist Cookie’s hesitant reaction, he tilted his head in confusion.
"Do we need more?"
"Well, these look very similar, but most of them are actually different species. The mushrooms, too..."
"What?!"
Alchemist Cookie gently held up a genuine leaf she had collected and laid it beside his, carefully explaining the differences.
"Look closely. See how each of these leaves curls back just a little? Yours, on the other hand, grow straight out in a radial pattern. And for the color, a slightly brighter green indicates a younger, higher-quality specimen."
Dumbfounded by his mistake, Yogurt Cream Cookie listened intently to her explanation, his mouth hanging open. Lilac Cookie approached silently and peered at the plants with interest—perhaps for future reference.
"Wh... What...? They look exactly the same to me...?!"
A bewildered Yogurt Cream Cookie kept glancing back and forth between his pile and hers.
"Hehe, it takes some getting used to."
Ignoring their chatter, Wizard Cookie continued to gather herbs and mushrooms with cool efficiency. He flipped the mushrooms over to check their spores, plucking them by feel alone, and brought the leaves to his face to catch their scent. Judging everything from leaf shape and hue to the thickness of the stems, he selected the perfect specimens without a moment's hesitation.
Then, snapping off a nearby vine, he stripped the extra leaves and skillfully bound his harvest into a neat bundle.
"There. Should this be enough?"
"Thanks! You’re amazing."
Seeing the bundle of materials Wizard Cookie handed over, Alchemist Cookie let out a cry of admiration at his handiwork. As she took them and began her careful inspection, Yogurt Cream Cookie stared in wide-eyed surprise, comparing his own selection to the ones Wizard Cookie had picked.
"Whoa...! Are these all the correct ones?! I can hardly tell the difference... He’s incredible."
Wizard Cookie brushed off the praise as if it were nothing and pulled another plant from his sleeve.
"I found this, too."
"Wait...! Isn't this the one we've been looking for forever?! Are you sure? This is so rare..."
Alchemist Cookie’s voice rose in shock as she accepted the plant he tossed her way.
"It's fine."
"Thank you...! What's gotten into you? You're being awfully kind today!"
He responded to her words with a casual shrug.
"Well, I found four and kept three for myself, so there's that."
As he answered with a composed face, Alchemist Cookie scrutinized him with searching eyes.
"...One-fourth... Wait, where exactly did you find this?"
Wizard Cookie narrowed his eyes slightly and gave a mischievous grin.
"Not telling."
"...Well, I figured as much."
Though she looked a bit miffed by his attitude, Alchemist Cookie seemed somewhat resigned to it. A brief silence followed as they glared at each other, as if testing the other's resolve—a common occurrence between them. As he turned away and moved a short distance off, Yogurt Cream Cookie whispered in a low voice.
"He's not very pleasant, is he... is he always this mean?"
Hearing that, Alchemist Cookie laughed and shrugged.
"A little bit. But honestly, he’s quite kind for showing me a hidden gem like this and sharing his find with me. He's just a bit TWISTEEED!"
She raised her voice on those last words, making sure he heard her. However, as if such exchanges were a daily routine, Wizard Cookie showed no reaction, focusing instead on organizing his herbs. Watching his indifference, Yogurt Cream Cookie tilted his head in wonder.
"Is that so? It would be much nicer if you just split everything half-and-half."
Alchemist Cookie replied with a small smile.
"No, it's fine this way. You see, we're rivals."
"Rivals...?"
"Yes. We're partners who push each other to improve while we conduct our research. Ideally, I'd like to come gather materials alone, but that’s dangerous, and there are spots I can't reach by myself. That’s why I have him accompany me. Since I end up revealing my own secret spots to him, he shows me great places like this in return. If you want something, there’s always a price to pay. It’s only fair, right?"
Alchemist Cookie spoke with a hint of pride, stealing a glance at Wizard Cookie. Whether he heard her or not, he placed his bundle of materials into his basket, lifted the hem of his robe slightly to avoid tripping on the tree roots, and made his way back toward them.
"I see... that sounds rather nice. Lilac Cookie, do you have a rival like that?"
When Yogurt Cream Cookie suddenly asked, Lilac Cookie shifted his gaze toward him. He looked up slightly as if remembering something. For a fleeting moment, a faint light of melancholy seemed to flicker in his distant eyes.
"........."
"I see..."
As if sensing Lilac Cookie's circumstances, Yogurt Cream Cookie gave a light sigh and quietly accepted his silence. Watching the two of them from the corner of his eye, Wizard Cookie leaned in and whispered to Alchemist Cookie.
"...It looks to me like he's just staying silent?"
Alchemist Cookie had clearly been thinking the same thing. Leaning toward him, she let out a quiet word with a wry smile.
"Right?"
The valley path gradually began to narrow. Unlike the open space they had been in before, they were now walking between steep, jagged cliffs that pressed in from both sides.
Suddenly, Lilac Cookie snapped his head up.
The silence of the forest was abruptly shattered. A faint, ominous sound—like something heavy and hard being dragged—echoed through the air, and he instantly shifted into a combat stance.
"What’s that noise?"
Alchemist Cookie looked up from her notes, scanning the surroundings to find the source of the sound. A dry rattling of pebbles followed, and Wizard Cookie immediately sensed the danger as well.
"Rockfall!"
Lilac Cookie shouted as everyone looked skyward. There, a massive boulder was hurtling down the steep slope, tearing through tree branches as it came.
"Wh—aaahhh!!"
"Eeeeek!!"
Yogurt Cream Cookie and Alchemist Cookie cried out in unison.
"Run!!"
Moving in a flash, Lilac Cookie scooped up the terrified and frozen Yogurt Cream Cookie without hesitation and bolted from the spot. In this place with no real path and steep cliffs on either side, there was nowhere to hide. As if targeting them specifically, the boulder rolled on relentlessly.
Wizard Cookie, who had been running, skidded to a halt and calmly leveled his staff.
"Leave it to me! Halt, boulder!!"
With a swing of his staff, the magic triggered instantly. The boulder’s momentum gradually slowed until it came to a dead stop just a few paces in front of him. Silence returned to the forest once more.
"Whoa, incredible...! You stopped such a huge rock all by yourself!"
"……!"
Yogurt Cream Cookie gasped at the magic as he was gently set back on the ground. Lilac Cookie couldn't hide his surprise either, staring intently at the now-motionless boulder. Wizard Cookie lowered his staff and scanned the area once more.
"Of course I did. ...But this is strange. There haven't been any rockfalls around here for a long time. There were no signs of them, so I thought it was safe."
Hearing his doubt, Lilac Cookie silently looked up toward the top of the cliff. He caught a glimpse of a shadow passing against the backlight, but judging it impossible to give chase up the steep incline, he simply tracked the silhouette with a sharp, piercing gaze.
"…We should head back."
"You're right. We've gathered the materials, and this should last us a while anyway. It feels a bit eerie out here, so let's get home quickly."
"I agree. Walking really is exhausting, isn't it?"
Yogurt Cream Cookie complained, shaking his legs out as they walked. Seeing this, Alchemist Cookie gave a small smile.
"Well, you are usually riding on your magic carpet."
"A magic carpet?"
Wizard Cookie, who had been walking behind them, cut in with a voice full of curiosity. Seeing his eyes sparkle at the mention of "magic," Alchemist Cookie gave a wry smile, thinking, Here we go again.
"Hey, is there really such a thing as a magic carpet?"
"Of course. It’s one of my most prized treasures. It can fly through the sky."
Yogurt Cream Cookie spoke proudly, giving a casual wave of his hand as he walked. At the mention of his treasures, Wizard Cookie’s eyes shone even brighter.
"Whoa... I'd love to see it sometime!"
"Come visit the ship later. I'll let you take a short ride."
"Really?! Thank you!"
"I don't have it on me right now, but there are all sorts of other treasures in the palace vault. Like the 'Heart of Geredusa,' which is legendary for turning anyone who looks at it into stone... or the 'Yeti’s Breath,' ice that never melts...!"
Completely captivated by the stories of his treasures, Wizard Cookie likely wouldn't be leaving Yogurt Cream Cookie’s side for a while. Alchemist Cookie let out a quiet sigh and moved to walk beside Lilac Cookie.
"...Hey, about that rockfall earlier..."
Unable to shake the incident from her mind, Alchemist Cookie leaned in and whispered her question. Lilac Cookie let out a short breath, his voice laced with a sharp, lingering caution.
"It’s best not to stick your nose where it doesn't belong... if you value your life, that is."
A chill settled over the air at his words. Alchemist Cookie fell silent, and unable to bear the awkwardness, she flipped open her notebook and focused on her notes.
Meanwhile, the two walking in the front were engaged in a peaceful conversation, as if the tense atmosphere from moments ago had never existed.
"By the way... do you have a moment?"
Yogurt Cream Cookie leaned in toward Wizard Cookie, stealing a glance behind them.
"Do you happen to know what Alchemist Cookie likes?"
"...Huh?"
Caught off guard, Wizard Cookie stopped in his tracks for a split second. A look of deep contemplation flickered across Yogurt Cream Cookie’s face. Looking back, he saw Alchemist Cookie absorbed in her notebook, seemingly oblivious to their conversation.
"She’s been a great help to me. She always tells such fascinating stories—I’m never bored around her. So, I was thinking of giving her something as a thank-you gift, but..."
Hearing this, Wizard Cookie tossed back a mischievous question, as if testing the other’s intentions.
"Why ask me?"
"You two are rivals, aren't you? I figured you’d know her best. When it comes to gifts, I thought of jewels or accessories, but..."
Wizard Cookie fell into thought, absentmindedly stroking the surface of his staff. Would someone as intellectual as her really care for jewelry?
"...Hmm. Wouldn't it be an alchemy book, after all?"
"...I figured it would be a book. I don't really read that sort of thing myself, so I'm a bit out of my depth."
Yogurt Cream Cookie crossed his arms and looked up at the sky, appearing troubled.
"Why not ask your vassals?"
"I have plenty who are knowledgeable about magic, but these days, there aren't many who specialize in alchemy."
"It certainly is rare. You’d have to be quite the eccentric."
Wizard Cookie nodded, his words laced with sarcasm yet carrying a hint of agreement.
Alchemy was an ancient discipline, originally founded by those who sought to create gold. In that pursuit, various substances were discovered, forming the very roots of modern science. Since alchemists also identified "magical energy" as a substance, it remains a crucial foundation for magic as well. However, in an age where magic and science have flourished independently, alchemy is often dismissed as an outdated field of study.
As someone dedicated to mastering such a craft, she truly didn't have many kindred spirits.
Yogurt Cream Cookie let a faint smile play on his lips as he turned to face Wizard Cookie directly.
"And that’s where you come in. Could you find a book she’d like and bring it to me?"
"Wh—?! Me?!"
Wizard Cookie’s voice jumped an octave.
"What’s going on? What are you two whispering about back there?"
Alchemist Cookie peered over their shoulders, having caught the sound of their voices.
"Oh, it's nothing! Actually, why don't you think of a 'Top Three' list of spots to show me around the kingdom? We don't have much time this visit, after all!"
"Huh? Well... I guess I could..."
He redirected the conversation in a flash. Alchemist Cookie moved back to her spot, grumbling with dissatisfaction, and clicked her pen to start a new page in her notebook.
Once he was sure she was occupied, Yogurt Cream Cookie gave another wink.
"...I want it to be a surprise for her. Can you keep it a secret?"
"Wait... I haven't said yes yet..."
Wizard Cookie couldn't hide his bewilderment; the conversation was moving forward as if his consent were already a given. Yet, Yogurt Cream Cookie maintained his broad, beaming grin.
"Of course, I’ll make it worth your while! I have plenty of rare magic grimoires."
"Grimoires...?"
Wizard Cookie, who had been about to refuse, felt his eyes sparkle with interest. Yogurt Cream Cookie didn't miss that tiny opening for a second.
"Plus, you saved us with that incredible magic earlier, remember? I'll add a little extra for that. I'll even throw in a small magic crystal. How does that sound?"
"...M-magic stones...!"
Magic stones—special stones capable of storing magical energy. They were extremely expensive and notoriously difficult to obtain. To think he could get his hands on such a thing as a reward!
"So, could you bring it to the ship by next week? Even if you can't find the physical book, any information on where to get it would be a huge help!"
Seeing Wizard Cookie completely captivated by the promised rewards, Yogurt Cream Cookie casually wrapped up the deal. Wizard Cookie thought for a moment, then let out a small smile and gave a vigorous nod.
Wizard Cookie was slowly scanning the shelves of the kingdom's bookstore.
A faint scent of wood drifted through the shop, where rows of colorful book spines stood in tidy order. Since the kingdom had only been founded a few years ago, this shop didn't have much of a history. As a result, the inventory consisted mostly of relatively new books.
However, because the kingdom made an effort to collect various books from all over the world through trade, they managed to maintain a decent selection. While it was a general bookstore, they had begun stocking several magic-related titles to meet the demands of the kingdom's magic-wielding cookies.
Wizard Cookie repeatedly picked up magic books, flipped through a few pages, and returned them to their shelves.
"Still... it's not like a great book is just going to conveniently appear. The selection here is pretty thin..."
He let out a small sigh at the limitations of their still-growing kingdom, yet continued to pick up each book with care. He checked them with a faint hope that someone might have conveniently stocked something interesting, but so far, nothing had caught his eye.
Besides, if it were a bookstore within the kingdom, there was no way Alchemist Cookie hadn't already checked it. After all, she was often the one putting in requests for specific book orders.
"Well, if just providing information is enough, then—"
"Hello, Wizard Cookie."
A voice suddenly called out, and Wizard Cookie looked up. Angel Cookie was standing there.
"Oh, hey. Are you on duty at the bookstore today?"
"Yes. If you find a book that explains how to fly through the sky... please let me know..."
She cradled a book in her arms and scratched her cheek bashfully. Wizard Cookie glanced toward the animal section where the bird books were kept, thinking that instead of magic, she might be better off learning how to move those wings of hers—but he quickly realized how rude that would be and decided to keep his mouth shut.
"Also... a foreign merchant came by earlier..."
"Was there a new shipment?"
"Yes. I was just about to put them on the shelves... but among them, there was a book that looked like something you would like."
With that, she held out the book she was carrying. He took it, scanned the title, and flipped to a random page to check the contents.
"...Oh, this isn't a grimoire, but it explains magic from a slightly different perspective... This looks interesting! ...Wait? A magic circle rooted in alchemy...?"
His hand stopped mid-flip. In the explanation of a certain magic circle, the relationship between alchemy and magic circles was described in exquisite detail.
"Hmm... if it’s got information on alchemy too, this might actually work..."
"Does it meet your liking?"
"I love it! Thanks, Angel Cookie! Alright, I’ll take this one."
"I am so happy to be of help...!"
Hearing that, Angel Cookie gave a serene smile and began the checkout process. As Wizard Cookie handed over his coins and waited for her to finish, another cookie came tumbling into the shop with a noisy clatter.
"He-he-he!! My bad, but let me hide out here for a sec!"
The door slammed shut with a bang, sending the door chimes into a frantic jingle. It was Devil Cookie. From the looks of it, he had ducked in here to escape after pulling some kind of prank. However, just as he started to look relieved, he spotted Angel Cookie’s face and immediately twisted his expression into a look of pure disgust.
"Gah! Angel Cookie! What are you doing here?!"
"I am the one on duty today..." she replied, causing Devil Cookie to clutch his head as if realizing he’d made a huge mistake.
"Devil Cookie... you must not play pranks..."
"I'm not listening to your lectures!!"
Watching their exchange, Wizard Cookie narrowed his eyes in annoyance. It seemed best to get out of here before he got dragged into something troublesome. However, Angel Cookie’s focus had shifted entirely toward stopping the mischief, and the checkout process had come to a halt—even though this book was supposed to turn into a rare grimoire and an expensive magic stone very soon.
"What?! You hid the deliveries for the Blueberry Birds?!"
"Ke-ke-ke! Don't know who they were for, but who cares! Why don't you just stay quiet and get back to your register!"
I'm pretty sure I didn't make any wishes on a prayer strip today, Wizard Cookie thought, tuning out their bickering. The citizens of the kingdom knew well that it was best to leave Devil Cookie’s antics to Angel Cookie.
"I am sorry, Wizard Cookie. But Devil Cookie, please... tell me where you hid them...!"
"Ke-ke! Not telling!"
As Angel Cookie returned to the transaction, Wizard Cookie contemplated his next move.
(I'll hand this over, get the grimoire and the magic stone in return... maybe even see the magic carpet... Ah, but I did just buy this. Maybe I should read it for myself first...)
He looked down with a satisfied expression, feeling the weight of the book in his hands. But then, his train of thought veered in a different direction.
"......But..."
He imagined Yogurt Cream Cookie handing the book over to Alchemist Cookie. He saw her accepting it, hearing his words of gratitude, and beaming with a joyful smile. That image stuck in the back of his mind like a thorn.
(I don't know... I don't like the sound of that...)
He stared intently at the book he had just finished paying for.
"No, we must do what is right...!"
"Like I give a damn!"
Their arguing felt unusually loud in his head today. He slowly traced the spine of the book and let out a sigh. If she received this book, she would surely brag to him about it. How she got a present—a new book from a foreign land—from her friend.
"You can't do that...!"
"Why not?!"
(...I think I'll keep this book for myself.)
The decision was made quietly.
Even if he pressed Devil Cookie for answers now, it wouldn't change the situation. He decided to get the details from the Blueberry Birds later and perhaps whip up a tracking spell or something. With that, he drew a line under the matter and stepped out of the shop.
As he stepped out onto the street, the sun had begun its descent, casting a low, golden glow across the ground. The voices of cookies chatting and laughing drifted through the air on the breeze.
Instead of heading toward the harbor where Yogurt Cream Cookie’s ship was docked, Wizard Cookie made his way toward the Archives—the tower he managed. For some reason, the book in his arms felt as heavy as a guilty conscience.
At that moment, a familiar voice called out from behind him.
"Oh! Wizard Cookie!"
He turned to see Yogurt Cream Cookie walking toward him, with Lilac Cookie in tow. The moment he saw them, Wizard Cookie reflexively hid the newly purchased book behind his back.
"Yo—Yogurt Cream Cookie! ...And Lilac Cookie, was it?"
"Thanks again for your help this morning. So, how did it go? Did you find a good book?"
Wizard Cookie hesitated for a second at the question. He had tried to hide it instantly, but the corner of the book was peeking out from behind his small frame. It was obvious to anyone that he had just come from the bookstore.
"Uh... no... I couldn't really find anything that fit the bill..."
Yogurt Cream Cookie furrowed his brows and let out a short sigh.
"I suppose it was too much to ask on such short notice. Actually, the merchant ship’s departure was moved up—we're leaving tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? That’s quite a sudden turn of events."
Wizard Cookie blinked in surprise, though he understood the nature of such abrupt schedule changes. He had already heard from Alchemist Cookie that this particular trip of his was a busy one.
"I wish I could have stayed a bit longer... but then again, I did have to do a lot of haggling just to get them to let me on the ship. Well, it can't be helped. I'll just have to arrange a gift from my end."
A hint of resignation lingered in Yogurt Cream Cookie’s words. Wizard Cookie nodded slightly, his grip tightening on the hidden book.
"Right. I’m sorry, but I think you'll be able to pick out something much better if you take your time to look."
"You’re right. It is what it is."
Yogurt Cream Cookie quickly regained his composure and gave a bright laugh. I suppose when you’re that wealthy, you lose your freedom in exchange for your riches, Wizard Cookie thought, feeling a twinge of pity for him.
"Oh, and regarding the reward for saving us—I definitely intend to follow through on that. I have it ready on the ship, so why don't you come by and pick it up?"
"Thank you!"
Wizard Cookie felt a pang of guilt, but his expression softened slightly at those words. Just then, the book tucked under his arm caught Yogurt Cream Cookie’s eye.
"...By the way, what’s that book?"
Surprised by the sudden question, Wizard Cookie’s eyes darted around nervously.
"Oh... this? I just bought it... but it's for me."
"Heh, mind if I take a look?"
As Yogurt Cream Cookie casually reached out, Wizard Cookie instinctively hugged the book tight and took a step back. Oblivious to the tension, Yogurt Cream Cookie tilted his head in genuine curiosity at the reaction.
"I-it's for personal use. It's a magic book, see..."
Wizard Cookie clung to the book, averting his gaze. Realizing that acting this way would only make him look more suspicious, he finally gave in and handed it over as if surrendering. Yogurt Cream Cookie took it, looking over the cover and spine with a bright smile.
"This is one of the titles my merchant ship was carrying! I'm glad to see they've stocked it already."
"Is that so...!"
Wizard Cookie stared at him and the book in surprise at the unexpectedly positive reaction.
"It always puts me in a good mood to hear that my own merchants are bringing high-quality goods into the world."
Watching him speak so proudly of his merchant fleet, the tension drained from Wizard Cookie’s shoulders, and he offered a bright smile.
"I’d expect nothing less. Coming from a land so well-versed in magic, even their non-grimoires are on a different level."
"Isn't that the truth? So, is it an interesting read?"
At Yogurt Cream Cookie’s question, Wizard Cookie gave an enthusiastic nod.
"Yeah! I’ve only skimmed the contents, but it seems to explain magic from a completely different perspective than standard grimoires. Especially the part where it breaks down magic circles by linking them to alchemy formulas, it’s quite rare—and the magic circle described there was... Ah!"
As Wizard Cookie rambled on excitedly about the book’s contents, Yogurt Cream Cookie’s eyes began to sparkle. It was only then that Wizard Cookie realized he’d accidentally mentioned alchemy, and he quickly clapped a hand over his mouth.
"It has information on alchemy in it too?"
"Well... uh, just a little..."
Wizard Cookie’s eyes darted about in a panic. But Yogurt Cream Cookie held the book up, looking delighted.
"Is that right?! I had no idea... To think such a treasure was right under my nose!"
"It... it really is just a tiny bit... so, um..."
Wizard Cookie struggled to find the right words, feeling increasingly apologetic at the other's joy. However, Yogurt Cream Cookie didn't seem to mind at all, his voice remaining cheerful.
"No, that's perfectly fine. If she wants something more specialized, I’m sure she’ll find it herself. So, there’s absolutely no need for you to worry about it."
"Ah..."
Wizard Cookie felt his throat tighten. Before him stood a cookie who had not only overturned his cunning little plan but had even interpreted his panicked behavior in the most positive light possible.
"Thanks for the great tip! I'll make this my gift! ...Oh, don't worry—you can have this book back. I might still have more in stock once I get back to the ship."
With that, he handed the book back to Wizard Cookie. Wizard Cookie could do nothing but swallow his words and accept the situation.
"You've been a huge help! Why don't you come to the ship with me now? I'll have dinner prepared for you! After all, you’re my lifesaver. I’ve got your reward ready, too!"
Yogurt Cream Cookie gave him a light pat on the shoulder, a cheerful smile plastered on his face.
"Sorry... I still have some things... I need to do..."
However, Wizard Cookie struggled to find a response and ended up declining the invitation. Not expecting to be turned down, Yogurt Cream Cookie tilted his head in wonder.
"Is that so? Well then, come by later with Alchemist Cookie. I’m sorry things are so hectic, but I’d love to show you some Yogurcan hospitality."
Wizard Cookie wore a complicated expression, but he gave a slow nod regardless.
"...Yeah."
Yogurt Cream Cookie departed the scene in high spirits. After watching him go, Lilac Cookie remained expressionless, yet he lingered for a moment, staring at Wizard Cookie as if he had something to say. He shifted his gaze slightly toward the book, met Wizard Cookie’s eyes once more, and then silently turned on his heel to follow his master.
Feeling as though Lilac Cookie had seen right through his true intentions, Wizard Cookie clutched the book to his chest and looked down to hide his agitation. That perceptive cookie... surely he won't say something unnecessary to his master, will he?
The mere thought sent a cold shiver down his spine, and a bead of cold sweat formed on his brow.
Wizard Cookie began trudging toward the Archives, his energy completely drained. The faint tolling of a ship’s bell from the direction of the harbor echoed heavily in his heart.
(Why am I panicking like this? I’ve got my hands on a fascinating book... and on top of that... I’m getting a grimoire and a magic stone as a reward...)
He muttered to himself, his eyes fixed on the ground. Every time he thought of the rewards—items that would usually take a tremendous effort to obtain—the image of Alchemist Cookie’s joyful smile upon receiving the book from Yogurt Cream Cookie flickered in and out of his mind. She would treasure it. Every day, in their usual laboratory, she would start reading it.
...Right in front of him.
He climbed the stairs of the Archives and pushed open the heavy doors, revealing the quiet space within. Dim light filtering through the windows cast pale shadows across the floor. On the large wooden desk, an encyclopedia of research materials they had been reading together last night lay open.
Holding the book close, a thought suddenly struck him.
".........Wait. Yogurt Cream Cookie said he’d treat Alchemist Cookie and me to dinner..."
He pondered, lightly tracing the cover of the book in his arms with his palm.
"The physical book is right here. ...In that case, I can just give it to her directly."
Why had he been in such a rush? As the question surfaced, his thoughts began to crystallize. We went to gather materials for our research this morning. Knowing her, she’d get so absorbed in a new project that she’d forget to eat. That meant Alchemist Cookie would surely be coming here soon, just like always, to start her work.
And if he just left this book on the desk, it would undoubtedly catch her eye.
"Is this your book? I've never seen this one before. Mind if I take a look?" she would surely ask, her eyes sparkling. Once he gave his permission with a simple "Go ahead," she’d smile and begin flipping through the pages with intense curiosity. "Heh, you found quite an interesting book, didn't you?" she’d say. And he would stand by her side and tell her, "There's a section on alchemy here. Rare, isn't it?"
Then, after she’d spent some time with the book, he’d invite her: "Let’s head over to Yogurt Cream Cookie’s ship together. He invited us for dinner."
By the time he finished playing out the scenario in his head, his gloom had vanished as if it had never been there. Instead, a fiery competitive spirit was blazing in his heart.
"I feel a bit bad for Yogurt Cream Cookie... but let's just say Alchemist Cookie 'happened' to find the book I had first."
He sank into his chair and opened the book. Instead of the first page, he chose to spread it open to the section where the magic circles and alchemy descriptions were lined up, and settled in to wait for her arrival.
Wizard Cookie sat in the chair by the window, unable to concentrate, staring blankly at the sky. The harsh glare of the midday sun had completely faded, staining the horizon in pale shades of violet. In the distance, the rooftops of the kingdom shimmered in orange under the setting sun.
"She’s not coming...?"
He muttered to himself, closing the book in his hands.
"Is she not coming today at all?"
Alchemist Cookie, who he was certain would show up, was nowhere to be seen. Now that they had gathered the research materials, she should have been rushing here with her tools and supplies to start her experiments. His eyes drifted to the distillation equipment tucked away on the shelf in the corner of the room.
"Well... she’ll probably be here tomorrow... but tomorrow is too late. Should I just go to her now? No, but for me to go out of my way like that...? I don't even have a good excuse to give her the book... and yet..."
Wizard Cookie’s thoughts raced again. The book was right here. The one he—not anyone else—had chosen for her. But she wasn't coming. He didn't know why. His deadline was the moment he had to take Alchemist Cookie to see Yogurt Cream Cookie. If that was the case, wasn't it only logical to go and give it to her directly?
".........No! I’m going!"
He sprang up from his chair, clutching the book tightly. That was it—he was going to invite her anyway. He would buy the book, meet Yogurt Cream Cookie, and then head straight to her. She would undoubtedly be interested in what he was carrying.
"I found a great book earlier. I've already finished it—want to give it a read?" He’d say it like that, casually handing it over.
But what then? Letting things stay vague like this would weigh on his conscience. It would be awkward, but he’d simply apologize to Yogurt Cream Cookie and tell him honestly, "I'm sorry, but I can't help you after all." Then, he’d tell him he didn't need the reward.
After all, he was only able to help because he could use magic. For him to be the only one to profit from something she couldn't do—that wasn't fair at all! Besides, even his staff was just a powerful artifact he’d happened to find in the Witch's house; it wasn't a manifestation of his own strength. It really wasn't fair. Yes, that was it. That's all there was to it.
"Alright!"
With his mind made up, he took a step forward. He didn't quite understand why he was panicking so much, or what exactly was driving him. He was simply possessed by the thought that, whatever happened, he could not let Yogurt Cream Cookie beat him to it.
Wizard Cookie dashed down the tower stairs, cradling the precious book as he ran toward the harbor. He looked out over the kingdom, now bathed in the colors of twilight. The chatter of other cookies drifted on the wind as he hurried through the streets, his mind still working.
Where could Alchemist Cookie be? If she’s not at the tower, is she at home? Has she already met him? No, he looked busy, so...
Greeting familiar faces as he passed, he quickened his pace.
I'll head to the harbor first, then go look for her.
Rather than wandering around aimlessly searching for her, he figured he might pick up some information if he went to the harbor first. Without a moment's hesitation, Wizard Cookie headed straight for the docks.
The harbor was bathed in the hues of the sunset, its waters gently lapping against the shore. The sails of the merchant ships caught the golden light as sailors busily loaded trade goods, hurrying to complete their preparations for departure.
Spotting Yogurt Cream Cookie among them, Alchemist Cookie called out with a cheerful smile.
"Oh, Yogurt Cream Cookie! I came up with a whole plan to show you around the kingdom, but I hear the merchant ship is leaving tomorrow? That’s what the sailors over there told me."
Yogurt Cream Cookie shrugged his shoulders with an air of mock disappointment.
"It’s true, unfortunately. And after I went through all the trouble of coming to visit you, too. They say the weather might take a turn for the worse if we stick to the original schedule, so we're heading to the next country early."
"Haha, well, it would be a disaster if the ship capsized."
"If only I could bribe the weather, too."
As they laughed at his joke, he suddenly seemed to remember something. A smirk played on his lips as he turned to face Alchemist Cookie.
"By the way! There’s something I want to give you!"
"Oh? What is it?"
Alchemist Cookie asked, her interest piqued and a hint of surprise in her voice.
He picked up a book wrapped in a ribbon, which he had prepared atop a nearby wooden crate. As the two stood facing each other, a quiet sea breeze brushed between them. With a touch of dramatic flair, he held it out to her.
"Please, accept this book!"
At that moment, Lilac Cookie, who was standing guard behind him, noticed something. He shifted his gaze toward a building near the entrance of the harbor.
"Wow... Is this... a magic book?"
The moment Wizard Cookie heard Yogurt Cream Cookie’s voice, he instinctively ducked behind the shadow of the decorative arch at the harbor entrance. He pressed himself into the darkness, desperate to remain unseen. As Alchemist Cookie’s voice rang out, a violent restlessness surged in his chest.
"That's right. And apparently, it has information on alchemy in it too!"
"Alchemy as well? That sounds fascinating... Did you pick this out yourself?"
"Hardly! I don't know the first thing about that. I had an expert choose it for me."
Hearing those words, Wizard Cookie gripped the book in his hands tighter. The bustle of the harbor seemed to fade away, replaced by a wave of wordless emotion crashing over him.
Alchemist Cookie looked down at the book and smiled at Yogurt Cream Cookie’s explanation.
"I see! They have great taste! Was it one of your vassals? Be sure to give that cookie my thanks."
"Of course! I’ll be sure to deliver the reward!"
He puffed out his chest proudly. Though he hadn't been the one to select the book she’d like, the credit for the thoughtful gesture had become entirely his own. Alchemist Cookie shot him a teasing look.
"Giving me a gift like this out of the blue... I suppose you have your moments after all."
"What’s 'your moments' supposed to mean?"
"Well, you're usually just telling me to 'deliver' something to you, aren't you?"
"That’s... haha! It’s just my way of saying I appreciate how you always show me such interesting things!"
Yogurt Cream Cookie laughed sheepishly, remembering his usual attitude toward her. Alchemist Cookie couldn't help but let out a small laugh in return.
"Oh, you! But thank you, Yogurt Cream Cookie! I’ll start reading this right away!"
"Hey now, I was hoping to invite you to dinner first."
"Oh, really? In that case, I think I’ll take you up on that."
"Haha, just don't read while you're eating!"
From behind the pillar of the building, Wizard Cookie stood perfectly still, listening to their pleasant banter. Their conversation was surprisingly peaceful—they looked like they were having so much fun.
In contrast, what were his usual conversations with her like?
Snide remarks, bickering, mocking each other’s experiments. When one succeeded in their research, the other would immediately pick a fight to provoke them, often leading to a full-blown argument. At their worst, they’d end up in fierce rows, throwing jellies at one another.
Every time those memories surfaced, he tightened his grip on the book. There were surely countless times he had thought of her as hateful or a nuisance. He had called alchemy outdated. Even now, he believed magic was far superior.
And yet—why was his heart being stained so black? Why was it so painful that it felt like his chest was being crushed?
He quietly stepped away, making sure not to make a sound. Lilac Cookie’s gaze followed his presence, but he remained silent, continuing to watch over the two as they talked.
Just as Alchemist Cookie was about to step onto the ship's gangway, following Yogurt Cream Cookie's invitation to dinner, he looked up as if suddenly remembering something.
"…Oh, by the way… have you seen Wizard Cookie?"
"Wizard Cookie? No. Isn't he at the tower or something?"
"The tower, huh? I wonder if he’s busy…"
At the mention of his name, Alchemist Cookie paused and tilted her head. A flicker of genuine worry appeared on Yogurt Cream Cookie’s face.
"Did something happen?"
"I promised to show him my magic carpet… and since he helped us this morning, I have a reward prepared for him. I told him to come by and pick it up, but he hasn't shown up yet…"
Alchemist Cookie brought a hand to her chin, appearing indifferent.
"Hmm… maybe he just forgot?"
"I ran into him earlier, and he said he still had things to do. …Man, I’m going to be busy after dinner, and we’re setting sail first thing tomorrow morning. I guess it can't be helped—would you mind delivering the reward to him later?"
She had been listening to his grumbling quietly, but the moment he made that request, Alchemist Cookie’s eyebrows shot up, and she cried out in exasperation.
"See! You’re using me again!!"
"Hahaha! Sorry! It’s just that I know I can count on you!"
"Use one of your vassals!"
"I trust you! I really do! I’ll write a message for him right now, okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, fine."
Despite his laughter, his shoulders slumped slightly.
"But it looks like he’s not coming after all… I wonder if I did something to offend him?"
At those words, Alchemist Cookie let out a small sigh.
"Who knows… he can be a bit prickly, so it’s hard to say."
"I suppose… well, nothing to be done about it. Come, let’s get dinner started."
With that, he took one last look back toward the harbor entrance before leading Alchemist Cookie into the ship.
As the veil of night descended, he walked the path toward the Archives on the outskirts of the kingdom, the sunset at his back. Alone amidst the quiet, dim trees, his gaze remained fixed stubbornly on the ground. In his mind, the exchange between Alchemist Cookie and Yogurt Cream Cookie from moments ago replayed over and over again.
The book he never got to give felt agonizingly heavy. With feet like lead, he climbed the tower stairs and pushed open the door. There were no lights; he relied only on the faint moonlight filtering in to find his way to his chair.
(...I'm such a fool.)
A wave of self-derision surged within him. He tossed the book onto the desk with reckless force and slumped into his seat with a heavy thud. Hanging his head in defeat, he rested his temple against the window frame.
(...Whatever. I'll just forget it. It's not like anything has actually changed.)
Sinking into his dark emotions, he suddenly remembered he’d forgotten to collect his reward. If he went now, he might still make it. He could even partake in the Yogurcan-style dinner. But what kind of face was he supposed to wear while sitting there beside them as they chatted so happily?
(Oh...reward... a reward, like that... to hell with the reward!)
It wasn't that he didn't want the items. But compared to those expensive, rare treasures, there was something else—something far more precious that he craved so much he could practically taste it.
It was that soft smile of hers—the one that was never directed at him. Despite all the time they spent together on research, it was a smile he had never seen. The fact that it was being given to another cookie made his blood boil with an uncontrollable irritation. They had always spent their days provoking one another, sometimes even with a touch of malice. The faces he saw were ones of defiance, resentment, seething anger, or the occasional flash of sorrow... That was how they had always been. It was too late for regrets now.
Surely she—no, anyone—would find it far happier and more enjoyable to be with a generous, kind cookie like him rather than a cookie who did nothing but pick fights. Besides, he was wealthy, refined, and tall. It was painfully obvious that he stood no chance against such a rival.
This irritation was nothing more than selfishness. Yes, the petty selfishness of an immature, cynical child.
"Hmph!"
Unable to endure the unidentifiable rage bubbling up inside him, he released a burst of raw magic. A bolt of lightning flickered across the room like a lash, instantly igniting the candles, which flared and wavered violently. The light reflected the anger in his eyes—and his desperate sense of misery.
He flipped through the pages of the book with frantic energy. He thought that reading might cool his head, but the words refused to flow into his brain as they usually did; they remained just rows of ink, static upon the paper.
Outside the window, darkness had fully taken hold, leaving the interior of the tower bathed in the soft, flickering glow of candlelight. Wizard Cookie sat at his desk with a book spread open, but while his eyes traced the letters, his mind was lost somewhere far away.
Suddenly, the light sound of footsteps echoed from the stairs, and the door swung open.
"Wizard Cookie? Are you in here?"
"..."
Alchemist Cookie’s voice shattered the silence of the tower. But Wizard Cookie offered no reply. She took a few steps inside, letting out a small sigh of relief when she spotted him.
"Look, Yogurt Cream Cookie said he really wanted to give you your reward."
Wizard Cookie didn't even turn around. He kept his gaze dropped stubbornly toward the pages. He knew perfectly well that his behavior was rude, but for the life of him, he couldn't bring himself to be honest.
"..."
"But since you never showed up, and he’s busy getting ready for tomorrow’s departure... Oh, that’s right. He said he has to head back unexpectedly tomorrow."
Alchemist Cookie continued, her brow furrowing at his lack of response. Her expression was a mix of confusion and a hint of annoyance. Wizard Cookie’s shoulders shifted ever so slightly, but he still showed no sign of speaking.
"..."
"Are you even listening?"
Her irritation began to mount, and she planted her hands on her hips. Her voice now carried a clear edge of displeasure. After a long silence, Wizard Cookie finally muttered from beneath his muffler in a low, muffled tone.
"...I'm listening."
Hearing his sullen reply, Alchemist Cookie finally seemed to take note of his mood.
"Fine... sorry for interrupting your concentration. I was just asked to deliver this in his place. Sigh... Honestly, that Yogurt Cream Cookie... I’m not some delivery service, you know."
She complained about the wealthy cookie, yet there was a light, casual chuckle in her voice. That tone of familiarity tightened like a vise around the depths of Wizard Cookie’s chest. He propped his chin on his hand, pretending to flip a page, and kept his eyes on the book in silence.
While he feigned interest in the text, his frustration grew at how close she sounded to the other cookie. A swirl of jealousy—an emotion he refused to even admit to himself—was churning in the pit of his stomach.
Alchemist Cookie, increasingly irritated by his cold shoulder, thrust the reward parcel toward him.
"Here, take it. Maybe you should write him a thank-you note or something?"
She realized now that, for some reason, he was in a foul mood. Usually, when he was like this, things escalated into a fight, so her intuition told her it was safer to just hand it over and stay out of his way. Yet, Wizard Cookie only shifted his eyes slightly; he refused to even look her in the face.
"…I don’t want it."
"Excuse me?"
At his icy rebuttal, Alchemist Cookie froze for a split second.
"I said, I don’t want it."
He spat the words out again, even colder this time. His voice held nothing but a sharp, dismissive ring. Alchemist Cookie made no effort to hide her irritation and let out a heavy sigh before demanding an explanation.
"And why not?"
"You can have it."
His answer left her speechless. Wizard Cookie finally shifted his gaze from the book toward her, but the brief glimpse she caught of his eyes was as sharp and jagged as a blade, laced with pure frustration. The reward itself couldn't possibly be a bad thing, so what on earth was making him this angry? It was truly rare to see him in such an overtly foul mood.
"What are you even talking about? Yogurt Cream Cookie prepared this specifically for you. I already got this book for myself, see?"
"............"
Wizard Cookie’s eyes flicked toward the book cradled in her arms. Alchemist Cookie didn't miss that split-second movement. Realizing he had taken the bait, and harboring a faint hope that it might cheer him up, she lifted the book slightly.
"Right, this one! I thought it was just a magic book, but apparently, it has sections on alchemy too! I skimmed it a bit, and it seems to be primarily about magic. So, once I'm done reading it, I could—"
The moment she was about to say "lend it to you," Wizard Cookie’s fingertips twitched, and his brow shot up. The light in his eyes instantly transformed into a cold, flickering flame.
"……Stop interrupting my concentration!"
His voice was a volatile mix of irritation and frantic agitation, sounding nothing like his usual low, composed tone.
"Oh... sorry..."
Alchemist Cookie winced in surprise. As if rejecting her very presence, he dropped his gaze back to his book once more.
True, she herself often got so deeply absorbed in her research or reading that she’d snap at anyone who disturbed her. She recalled feeling that same flash of anger toward him before. But today, something felt off. This wasn't just a bad mood—he was pointedly, specifically furious. And yet, for the life of her, she couldn't remember doing a single thing to deserve it.
"There’s no need to be so rude about it. You should just take the reward."
Her voice took on a sharp edge, but her words failed to reach his tightly guarded heart.
"I said I don't want it. I'm sure it’s full of things you’d like. There’s a grimoire in there, and probably a magic stone, too."
His snide attitude was the final straw. Alchemist Cookie let her anger flare out in the open.
"I don't understand you at all! Why are you in such a foul mood? These are the grimoires you love so much, and a precious magic stone! I don't know what you're so mad at, but stop taking it out on me!"
"It’s nothing. Just take it and go home."
Her irritated voice echoed through the quiet room, yet he remained dismissive. This only fueled her indignation, and her tone grew even harsher—not just with anger, but with a sting of confusion and disappointment.
"What is wrong with you? Trampling over Yogurt Cream Cookie's kindness like this... What do you plan on saying to him the next time you see him, after giving this to me?"
She thought of their dinner earlier. Yogurt Cream Cookie had truly wanted Wizard Cookie to be there. If he found out his gift had been rejected, he would undoubtedly be hurt. Thinking of his sensitive nature only made Alchemist Cookie's blood boil further.
"That's none of your business,"
Wizard Cookie spat, letting out a short, cold breath.
"None of my business...? I’m the one who went out of my way to bring this to you!"
"Then it's unwanted meddling. If you hated being a 'delivery service' so much, you should have just said no."
"You...! Ugh, you are unbelievable!"
Pushed to her limit by his utter selfishness, she finally snapped. Wizard Cookie pressed a hand to his forehead as if he couldn't be bothered, a gesture that only incensed her more.
"Keep it down... I told you to stop interrupting me."
"I'm not exactly here because I want to interrupt you!"
Alchemist Cookie slammed her fist onto the desk and shouted. Wizard Cookie glared back at her, his gaze heavy and overbearing.
"...You’re persistent. Just take that and get out."
"Fine! Then I’ll gladly keep it for myself! Don't come crying to me when you regret it later!"
Gritting her teeth, Alchemist Cookie violently adjusted her grip on the parcel. Her entire body seemed to tremble with frustration and resentment. She flung the tower door open and slammed it shut with a deafening bang. The impact caused a bundle of dried herbs hanging near the door to crumble and scatter across the floor.
The sound of her angry footsteps retreating down the stairs gradually faded, and silence returned to the tower once more.
Once he was sure she was gone, Wizard Cookie collapsed, burying his face into his newly purchased book—not caring if he damaged the pages.
Right. This is our 'normal.'
Always irritable, short-tempered, and cynical. That's me.
A single tear dripped onto the surface of the book.
The front door flung open with such force that it hit the wall with a dull thud. Alchemist Cookie’s voice, thick with rage, echoed through the house, cutting through the cheerful sounds coming from the TV.
"I'm home!!!"
Vampire Cookie, who had been lounging on the sofa, jumped in surprise at the shout. He slowly raised his head to find Alchemist Cookie standing in the entryway, trembling with fury.
"...Scared me half to death..."
"I am so incredibly ticked off! What is his problem?!"
His little sister came home like this every once in a while. Most of the time, her anger was the result of a spat with Wizard Cookie, her research partner. Vampire Cookie crossed his arms and let out a sigh, thinking, At it again, are we?
However, she seemed even more incensed than usual today. The way she slammed the door, the sharp edge in every word—her emotions were raw and exposed. Well, it wasn't exactly the first time he'd seen her like this, but still.
"What did I even do?! He shouldn't take his frustrations out on me just because his research isn't going well!"
(...She’s really on edge.)
She was practically fuming. To make sure her wrath didn't turn toward him, Vampire Cookie maintained a steadfast silence. He let her angry monologue wash over him and watched as she stomped past him and the TV to retreat to her room. Once the "storm" had passed, he sank back into the sofa.
To him, his sister’s temper was just a part of daily life—a trivial occurrence that didn't require his interference. He popped a potato chip into his mouth and rewound the show he’d been watching.
Back in her room, Alchemist Cookie grumbled under her breath as she tossed the book and the reward parcel onto the table and flopped into her chair.
"I had a great book, a delicious dinner—I was in such a good mood! Forget it, I’m done with him. That gloomy little shut-in!"
She unleashed a barrage of insults toward her cushion, venting every bit of frustration she had toward him.
After a while, having regained some composure, she turned her attention to the rewards he had abandoned. Opening the parcel, she found a thick grimoire, a small drawstring pouch, and a single message card. As she flipped through the pages of the grimoire, she found herself momentarily captivated by its contents. Then, she opened the pouch to find—just as that idiot had said—a small but brilliant green magic stone.
"Wow... a real grimoire and a magic stone... Impressive..."
She marveled at them, tracing the stone with her finger. However, her expression of admiration quickly shifted into something else.
"Ugh, what a waste on Yogurt Cream Cookie’s part. Giving away a rare grimoire and a magic stone to a guy like that. I’d better put these to good use myself."
Even now, the memory of his attitude made her blood boil. What on earth was that all about?! She let out a sigh and stared at the cover of the grimoire.
...Seriously, what was that?
They fought all the time, but he had never been that irrational. Usually, their arguments had clear triggers—a debate that escalated too far or complaints about a failed experiment. They clashed because they understood the reason behind each other's anger. And because they understood the reason, they could eventually forgive one another.
But this time was fundamentally different. She had no idea why he was angry. It was completely senseless. A murky feeling swirled in her chest.
Letting out her umpteenth sigh, the message card caught her eye. It contained a brief note of thanks addressed to him.
"He didn't deserve a single word. And yet he took the time out of his busy schedule to write this..."
She absentmindedly pulled the card closer, and that’s when the letters "P.S." at the bottom caught her eye. Her gaze drifted to the lines following it, and she blinked. Her eyes widened with a mix of confusion and shock.
"...A book... for a present? ...Her?"
She whispered the message on the card several times, weighing the words in her mind. The moment the events and facts linked together vividly in her head, she gasped. It was as if a bolt of lightning had struck, solving every mystery at once. When she looked up, her eyes were shining with a brilliant light—the light of someone who had just discovered a fundamental truth.
".............!"
She sprang to her feet. Her face was flushed with the same exhilaration she felt when finding the answer to a brand-new experiment.
"I'm heading out for a bit!"
At her loud shout, Vampire Cookie, who was just about to open a bottle of grape juice, jumped yet again. He instantly hid it behind the lopsided mess of his hair, but she paid him no mind. Clutching the parcel, she dashed back out into the night kingdom. Her gait was the complete opposite of before; it was light, filled with a sense of certainty, as if she had finally found an answer.
"Boy, she’s busy..."
Vampire Cookie watched her whirlwind departure, utterly dumbfounded. He quickly regained his composure, however. Bringing the bottle of grape juice back out from his side, he popped the cork with a cheerful sound.
Alchemist Cookie was racing through the nighttime kingdom. Feeling the cold night wind against her cheeks, she rubbed her mouth, unable to suppress a smirk. Ah, thank goodness it was night. She couldn't show a face like this to anyone.
(Heh... Hehehe! So that’s what it was!)
Unable to contain the laughter bubbling up inside her, she arrived back at the Archives on the outskirts of the kingdom. She felt an unstoppable grin slipping out as she rehearsed in her mind the lines she was about to deliver. But she quickly scolded herself; that wouldn't do.
(Hehe... No, angry face, angry voice... Ahem, ahem!)
She lightly slapped her smirking cheeks and cleared her throat to compose herself. Closing her eyes for a moment, she vividly recalled his insufferable attitude from before—the irrational words, the cold, dismissive voice. Using those as fuel, she summoned her anger.
"...Alright."
With furrowed brows and her mouth set in a firm line, she took a deep breath and began to climb the stairs. Clutching the parcel tightly, she flung the tower door open with an air of authority. Her eyes were shining with the gleam of someone plotting a delicious scheme.
Now, it was time for some enjoyable retaliation.
"Wizard Cookie!"
Her voice, laced with anger, rang out sharply through the silence of the tower. Wizard Cookie turned slightly, looking annoyed, and gave a low, begrudging reply.
"…What now? I thought you went home."
Ignoring his comment, Alchemist Cookie marched up to the desk and slammed the parcel down. She planted one hand on her hip, looking down at him with an air of bold defiance, as if issuing a challenge to battle.
"I came to show you what was inside the reward."
At those words, Wizard Cookie let out a faint sigh and dropped his gaze back to his book. His posture made it crystal clear that he had no intention of talking further.
"…How many times do I have to say it? I told you I don’t want it. Fine, whatever. I’m sure it was full of 'very nice things'."
The irritation in his voice was palpable. However, Alchemist Cookie took advantage of the fact that his back was turned to let out a sly grin. She spoke with a wicked edge to her voice.
"That's right. It was full of such wonderful things that I just had to come back and brag about them."
Wizard Cookie shot her a glance and let out another long sigh. They glared at each other for a tense moment, a silent probe of each other's resolve, before Alchemist Cookie slowly opened the lid of the parcel.
"You really have a nasty personality."
"Not as nasty as yours. It would be a waste to keep such great things all to myself, after all."
At her provocative words, Wizard Cookie looked up slightly. He thought he could guess what was in the parcel, but hearing her talk like that made him a little curious despite himself. He shifted his body toward her, scowling. His expression was a mix of annoyance and a tiny spark of his usual curiosity.
Noticing the shift, Alchemist Cookie smirked. She spread the contents of the parcel out on the desk and clapped her hands together with exaggerated delight.
"Look at this! High-quality magic stones and a rare grimoire! Things like these... even if you had the coins, you'd hardly ever lay eyes on them, let alone buy them!"
"……"
Then, she slowly lifted a single card from the parcel and held it up toward Wizard Cookie.
"…And one more thing. …Look, this."
"…?"
He didn't understand what the slip of paper was. He stared at the card and then at her, looking puzzled.
She watched him with a triumphant air, scanned the message card, and then, imitating Yogurt Cream Cookie’s tone just a little, began to read it aloud slowly. Her calm voice echoed through the quiet room.
"It's a shame I couldn't give this to you in person, but thank you again for your help back then."
"……What, it’s just a card."
Exasperated, he turned his back again and started reading his book. His reaction didn't break her composure in the least. If anything, her fearless smirk deepened, as if the real show was only just beginning. Alchemist Cookie continued reading, heedless of his dismissal.
"And you must come visit us in Yogurca next time!"
Wizard Cookie showed no reaction. He didn't move a muscle, as if her voice hadn't even reached his ears. Seeing this, Alchemist Cookie narrowed her eyes with satisfaction. Then, after a deliberate pause, she continued reading.
"P.S."
It was right at that moment—just as he was about to show his annoyance that there was still more.
As if struck by a sudden realization, Wizard Cookie whipped around. The composure from before had vanished, replaced by a look of sheer panic.
"And thank you so much regarding the book for the present!"
"......Ah...!!!"
"She was absolutely delighted with it!"
"......Wait, hold on—"
His eyes flew wide, and a small, high-pitched squeak escaped his throat. His face paled instantly as he scrambled to his feet. That was the end of the message on the card. But those few short sentences were more than enough to send him into a frenzy. Alchemist Cookie, showing no mercy, moved in for the kill.
"Regarding the book for the present...?"
"...Stop!!!"
Card in one hand, she pressed the other to her mouth and tilted her head in an exaggeratedly puzzled gesture. Wizard Cookie rushed toward her, nearly tripping over his chair in his haste.
"She was absolutely delighted...?"
"Hey, wait a second...!!!"
She deftly dodged his outstretched hand. In one fluid motion, Alchemist Cookie stepped between him and his staff, which was leaning near the window. Cut off from his source of magic, he was visibly shaken.
"I wonder what this 'book for a present' could be...?"
"Stop! Cut it out...!!"
He tried to close the distance to snatch the card away, but his height failed him; no matter how he reached, he couldn't touch the card she held high above her head. As she moved the card left and right, he hopped and swiped at the air like a frantic kitten—a far cry from his aloof attitude of a few moments ago.
"And who exactly is this 'she'...?"
"Hey, give that—"
Giving up on the card for a second, Wizard Cookie tried a sneak attack to grab his staff behind her, but Alchemist Cookie quickly pressed her hand against his cheek, shoving him back. His hand gripped empty air, his movements completely neutralized.
"Why would this be in a reward parcel meant for Wizard Cookie...?"
"G-g-give it back!!"
With his cheek held fast, he desperately tried to swat her hand away, heedless of his face being squished. But her grip was surprisingly firm, and it took him several struggling moments to break free. Alchemist Cookie shot him a provocatively sweet smile.
"Oh? But you're the one who gave this to me, remember?"
"Ugh...!! I said give it back!"
Driven to desperation, Wizard Cookie lunged at her arm to reclaim the card, abandoning all pride. He managed to grab her raised arm, but Alchemist Cookie accidentally stepped on the hem of his robe. Wizard Cookie stumbled forward, and both of them lost their balance, crashing to the floor together.
"Whoa!" "Aaah!"
A heavy thud echoed through the room.
Having tumbled right on top of Alchemist Cookie in his frantic scramble, Wizard Cookie scrambled to his feet, snatched the card from her hand, and let his eyes race across the message. As he saw that every word she had read aloud was written there, verbatim, his face went from pale to a ghostly white.
"Ow, ow..."
Beside him, while he was desperately trying to rack his brain for an excuse, Alchemist Cookie sat up, rubbing her aching back. As she did, a certain book lying under the desk caught her eye. She adjusted her posture and reached under the desk to retrieve it.
"I’ve told you a million times not to leave books in places like this, they'll get damaged... Wait, what?"
"Ah... AHHH...!!!"
Wizard Cookie let out another shriek as he saw the book she had found. It was the book he had been reading until just a moment ago—the one he had hurriedly hidden under his feet when she suddenly burst back in. His scream had now become the final, clinching piece of evidence.
"This... is the exact same book Yogurt Cream Cookie gave to me."
Alchemist Cookie looked at the book in her hand, the corners of her mouth curling into a smirk. Her face was that of a hunter who had finally cornered their prey. Unable to meet her gaze, Wizard Cookie’s eyes welled up, and his face turned a brilliant shade of crimson as he looked away.
"Is this... a coincidence? Or is it..."
"Ugh... uuuugh..."
There was no longer any room for excuses. Unable to withstand the crushing weight of his own embarrassment, Wizard Cookie yanked the brim of his hat down, hiding his face completely as he slumped to the floor. He looked just like a small child.
The victor: Alchemist Cookie.
She stood up and crossed her arms, looking down at the pitiful sight of the defeated loser huddled under his hat. She could have easily torn him to shreds with words or laughed him to scorn, but she finally understood the true reason behind his foul mood today.
From an outsider's perspective, his methods were certainly poor. However, clashing with their raw, honest emotions was simply how these two operated. Saying exactly what was on their minds—that was precisely what had sharpened the precision of their research. And this time, he had hurled those honest feelings at her with everything he had, albeit in a twisted, roundabout way. A special kind of feeling: affection.
Even for someone like him, who obsessed over maintaining a cool, composed facade, he had abandoned that pride.
Watching Wizard Cookie’s trembling hands tugging at his hat, Alchemist Cookie let out a soft chuckle. It wasn't just the joy of victory; it was a laugh mixed with the warmth of having touched his clumsy, awkward kindness.
"...So, you picked it out just for me."
"N-no, I didn't..."
Wizard Cookie’s voice came out muffled from beneath his hat. At his continued stubbornness even after being backed into a corner, Alchemist Cookie’s eyebrow gave a sharp twitch.
"Ooh, really? Still sticking to that? My hypothesis is this: Yogurt Cream Cookie had no idea what kind of books I’d like. So, since he’d just met you, he asked you to find a 'nice-looking book' that I might enjoy. Am I getting warm?"
Her deduction hit the bullseye. Wizard Cookie shrank back like a small animal, his shoulders hunching as a visible tremor ran through his back—reaching all the way to the tip of his pointed hat. Alchemist Cookie let out an exasperated sigh.
"...I-I was just after the reward."
"Even though you didn't accept a single thing?"
She slashed through his pathetic excuse in an instant. Watching him fumble for words yet again, a smirk played on her lips as she slowly circled around to face him. This stubborn fool needed a little bit of a "punishment."
"And here I was, completely unaware... thinking only of thanking Yogurt Cream Cookie. Bragging to you about the very book you chose... Is that why you got into such a nasty mood?"
"T-that was... because... ugh... hnn..."
She applied the pressure, her words raining down on him with slow, calculated precision. Had he just pretended to know nothing and offered a simple "That's nice" with a smile, he wouldn't be in this humiliating mess. But he wanted the credit for his own kindness, and that was his undoing. Honestly, she couldn't tell if he was brilliant or a complete idiot.
Wizard Cookie’s voice cracked under the weight of his shame. He curled his already small body into an even tighter ball.
Deciding to get a little payback for the irrational treatment she’d endured earlier, Alchemist Cookie suddenly reached out and flipped up his hat. For a split second, she saw his tear-rimmed eyes and a face flushed a brilliant crimson. She finally burst out laughing.
"Pfft... Ahahaha! Your face is bright red! Hahaha! You actually have a cute side, don't you?!"
"S-shut up! Shut up! That's enough! Just... just drop it already...!!!"
With a face messy with tears, sweat, and a deep blush, he threw a tantrum like a small child. He snatched his hat back with a violent tug, pulled it down low again, and turned his back to scramble for his staff.
Wiping away the tears from her own laughter, Alchemist Cookie firmly grabbed his arm to keep him from escaping. She knew exactly what she was doing—by holding onto him like this, she was making it impossible for him to use his teleportation magic to flee.
"Hehe... thanks, Wizard Cookie. I’ll treasure it."
"Let go! Besides, I wasn't the one who gave it to you! It has nothing to do with me!"
"Good grief, how long are you going to keep being so stubborn? I hit the nail on the head with every single thing, didn't I?"
How long did this prickly cookie intend to keep up his defiance? She peered into his face, but he desperately looked away, trying to hide. Seeing him like that, she found him more and more... adorable.
"E-enough already... just go home...!"
"No. Not after everything you said to me. I haven't gotten an apology yet."
He clearly wanted this whole ordeal to end as quickly as possible, but she wasn't going to make it that easy for him. After all, this whole mess started because he took his frustrations out on her. Besides, an opportunity this entertaining didn't come around often.
I’m definitely making you apologize. I'm not letting you go, she seemed to say as she tightened her grip and pulled his arm toward her. Pulled away from his staff once again, he let out a pathetic whimper.
"...O-okay, I'll apologize...!"
"Hmm, but an apology doesn't necessarily mean you're forgiven, does it?~"
It was a fact that his terrible attitude had ruined her perfectly good mood earlier. She figured she was entitled to tease him about this for a good long while. With a mischievous scheme forming in her mind, Alchemist Cookie let a grin curl her lips.
"Ugh... the one with the truly nasty personality is you..."
He was still grumbling, but the fire from before was gone; he sounded like he had finally accepted his total defeat. Alchemist Cookie chuckled and adjusted her hold on the book.
"...Hey, we have the book right here. Let’s read it together."
"I-I already told you, I’ve read the whole thing..."
She spotted him looking for a gap to slip away and escape, so she firmly pinned his arm down again. She wasn't going to be satisfied until he had properly reflected on his behavior today.
"My, you're fast. In that case, where are the sections on alchemy?"
Ignoring his protests, Alchemist Cookie dragged him over to a nearby chair, forced him to sit, and placed the book in front of him. Then, she pulled up another chair to sit right between him and his staff. She kept a firm grip on his arm, with no intention of letting go anytime soon.
"Ugh... uuuugh...! I surrender! Just forgive me already...!"
"Come on, hurry up. Where is it?"
Nudged mercilessly, he tearfully began to flip through the pages.
That night, the Archives echoed with pathetic groans and joyful laughter. And before long, those voices shifted into the familiar sound of two passionate cookies lost in a deep, earnest research debate.
Alchemist Cookie quietly lifted the parcel and held it out toward Wizard Cookie. The mischievous, teasing glint from the previous night was gone, replaced by a calm, gentle smile.
"Here. I’m giving this back to you."
For a split second, Wizard Cookie reached out hesitantly, but he pulled his hand back just as quickly. A lingering trace of shyness and hesitation was still visible in his eyes.
"…N-no, it’s fine. Really… you should keep it."
At his words, Alchemist Cookie let out a small, soft sigh. With a voice that held both warmth and a touch of exasperation, she spoke firmly.
"What are you talking about? Take this and go say a proper thank-you to Yogurt Cream Cookie."
Wizard Cookie dropped his gaze, appearing lost in thought for a moment. Finally, he spoke, his voice now holding a newfound honesty.
"…Fine. I’ll take the grimoire. But the magic stone… I want you to have it. Consider it my apology for taking my frustrations out on you over something so trivial…"
Alchemist Cookie looked at him in surprise, but her expression soon melted into a smile.
"…Hehe. In that case, I’ll gladly accept it."
Seeing her soft, genuine smile, Wizard Cookie finally returned one of his own, looking truly happy.
At the harbor, the ship began to slowly pull away, the morning light reflecting gently off the surface of the water. The sound of the sparkling waves seemed to offer a blessing to their conversation. Standing side-by-side on the pier, the two cookies waved to the wealthy cookie standing on the deck.
One held the book brought by the merchant ship, while the other held a brand-new grimoire—both cradling their treasures with the utmost care.
