Chapter Text

Tom and Jake were sitting in their kitchen, while looking over some paperwork. Jake was typing some numbers in a calculator and saying the total to Tom who wrote each of them down carefully.

“And that’s the last one.” Jake handed the calculator to Tom who began adding everything up. “How’s it looking?”

“Not bad now just one… Oh.”

“That bad huh?” Jake asked nervously.

“Actually, better look!” Tom handed the calculator back to Jake, whose eyes widened in disbelief.

“Let me um just double check.” Jake slid the paper before redoing the math with the numbers all remaining the same. “Oh my god! W-we could actually do this.”

“Do you want to do this?” Tom asked. “It’s not a deal breaker for me?”

“Tom if I wasn’t all for this. We wouldn’t be having this conversation.” Jake laughed a little.

“Alright then,” Tom gave a wide smile. “Let’s adopt a baby.”

A few days later, the two of them had an appointment at their house with a social worker. Apparently, this was quite normal for the adoption process. Still, it didn’t stop Jake from quadruple checking everything in the house.

“Babe, I don’t think they’re gonna look at the outlet covers,” Tom assured Jake as the latter looked over every outlet.

“I am not taking any risks with this.” Jake knelt up and crossed his arms. With a small pout. Tom laughed and soon embraced his husband.

“Oh, we should go over the portfolio again!” Jake bolted up, nearly knocking Tom over.

This time Tom didn’t question anything, just followed Jake to the table. Currently on it was a manilla folder with Jacob and Thomas Reed written upon it. Carefully, Jake opened it up. Reading over every word they had written in it. Looking at every picture, they had taken. Even making sure Gabs got included. There was no detail left unturn, well expect for one.

“I’m still not sure how I feel about excluding us being Reality TV Stars…” Jake said. “It’s kind of a big deal.”

“There is space right there.” Tom pointed to an empty spot on a piece of paper. “It can always be added in.”

“I think we should address with the social worker when they come,” Jake announced and Tom nodded in agreement. “Better not to take any chances.”

“Works for me.” Tom pulled Jake close and kissed him on the head. “You’re doing great Babe.”

“Thanks Tom,” Jake leaned into Tom a bit. “There isn’t anyone else I would want to raise a child with.”

“I feel the same way.”

A few hours later, a knock came at the door. Jake bolted but quickly calmed down with a gentle touch from his husband. Tom took charge and opened it up to see a woman there.

“Hello. Is this the Reed House?” the woman asked looking at the clipboard in her hands.

“Yes it is, please come in,” Tom greeted as the woman walked in. Once inside Tom held out his arm. “Thomas Reed.”

“Kendra,” the woman said taking Tom’s hand.

“And I’m Jacob Reed,” Jake said coming over.

“Well, it’s nice to meet both of you,” Kendra looked around a bit. “Going to be upfront this is probably one of the best houses I’ve seen first impressions wise.”

“Wait really?” Jake gasped in pleasant surprise.

At that moment, Gabs jumped on the arm of the couch.

“Oh yes this is our cat Gabs,” Tom explained as Kendra turned to face the cat. “I hope it’s not a problem.”

“Not all,” Kendra wrote a few things down. “You will have to make a portfolio for the prospective birth parents, I would highly recommend including your cat in there.”

“Oh, we’ve already made on,” Jake said as he picked it up and held it close. “I thought we had to have it ready.”

“It’s not a requirement but I’m glad to see you have one made already.” Kendra smiled, writing more down as she did. “Mind if I look it over?”

“Of course.” Jake handed it over to Kendra. Silently she read it over, her facial expression never changing in the slightest. As she read, Jake moved next to Tom, who placed an arm around him.

“I’m impressed,” Kendra nodded. “This is quite detailed. If you’re alright with it, I would like to take this with me.”

“We do have a question about it,” Tom explained as he took Jake’s hand. “Both of us have competed on this Reality TV show called Disventure Camp, should that be something we include in the portfolio?”

“That is completely up to you,” Kendra explained. “I’m sure there’s a chance you will get recognized, but it is not necessary with all the other details you have. So shall we continue the house tour?”

Jake was staring at his computer. He was trying to do some work on an upcoming wedding but couldn't completely focus. Glancing at every ping he got. Kendra seemed pleased by the house tour. She even understood the baby’s hypothetical room not being completed at the moment. But who knows what could have happened. Maybe she was being positive to avoid her disgust. Maybe being Reality Stars was too much of a risk. There had to be something…

“Jake!” the sound of Tom’s yell broke him from whatever trance he was in. At first, he was confused before noticing it was now 5 pm close to when Tom normally got home on his early shifts.

“Tom?” Jake got up from his seat and started heading towards his husband. “Is something wrong?”

“Th-this came in the mail.” Tom held up an envelope.

“Is that what I think it is?” Jake’s eyes widened as he walked closer. Tom nodded. “Oh my god.”

“Should we open it together?"

Jake walked next to Tom. Both them grabbing an end of the envelope. Jake closed his eyes as the sounds of the paper tearing echoed in his ears. Seemingly sensing his husband’s nervousness, Tom took the paper out of the envelope. Jake started taking a few deep breaths, his body started shaking all over. Reading it over, all the words were a blur. Until…

Approved

It said approved. Jake covered his mouth, before his legs gave up on him. Tears now flowing down his cheeks. Tom knelt down next to him and Jake embraced him tightly.

“It’s happening Tom!” Jake managed to say hugging him tighter. “We’re going to be parents!”

“We actually are!” Tom squealed.

“This feels so surreal!” Jake felt his body start to relax. He looked back at the letter. “Looks like Kendra is sending out our portfolio to prospective birth parents soon. She’ll let us know when there’s a match.”

A purring sound soon came from between them and Gab’s head poked between her owners.

“Did you hear the good news Gabs?” Tom said excitedly as he picked her up. “You’re gonna be a big sister!”

Gabs titled her head a little. Tom laughed before holding her closer. Gabs meowed before squeezing herself out but remained close.

“Hope you don’t mind sharing our attention,” Jake laughed patting her on the head. “But once the baby is older, I’m sure they’ll give you a ton of it.”

Gabs’ purred again, before heading back off to whatever she was doing.

“She seems excited. For Gabs.”

Tom and Jake spent the rest of the day in bliss. Every conversation was about their future baby. From what they would like. Who they would be closer to personality wise. Jake wanting them to have Tom’s courage and Tom wanting them to have Jake’s determination. How Miriam and Jackie would both spoil the hell out of them. And most of all how much they would be loved.

“Tom?” Jake whispered as they laid in bed.

“Hmm?” Tom turned to face his husband.

“I’m curious what do you think the baby is going to be, a boy or a girl?”

“Girl.” Tom said firmly.

“That was quick,” Jake laughed a little.

“Oh, well the boys cause all the trouble. Okay maybe not all the trouble but like 95% of it.”

“Our son won’t be like that. He’ll hear too many stories from you to ever think that.”

“Our son…” the words hung on Tom’s lips for a second. “Um, well our daughter will certainly not be a bridezilla with all the stories you’ll have.”

“True. I’ll scare her from ever becoming one.”

The two laughed.

“I hope we get news soon,” Tom said.

“The sooner the better!” Jake agreed.

A few weeks later, Tom and Jake were sitting in Kendra’s office. Jake tapping his foot anxiously while Tom held his hand. Kendra was going through some papers before pulling out a file.

“So, I sent out your portfolios to a few prospective parents, and I think I have a good match for you.” Kendra handed them a piece of paper.

“Brianna Desmond.” Jake read aloud. “She seems nice.”

“Now I am going to be upfront with you to give you. You aren’t the first potential adoptive parents she’s looked into. She has rejected other potential parents.”

“Oh…” Jake said.

“Well maybe she had a good reason.” Tom shrugged slightly.

“If it is any consolation. I wouldn’t have sent your portfolio out to her if I didn’t think you could be a good match with her.” Kendra looked at her computer. “But if you’d like to have other options. I do have other potential matches for you.”

“Jake.” Tom placed a hand on his husband’s shoulder. “I think we can do it.”

“Okay…” Jake said with a small nod. “I’m in.”

“Perfect.” Kendra smiled. “I’ll send your contact information to Brianna and you two can be in contact.”

The pair didn’t have to wait long before hearing from Brianna. A few hours after their meeting with Kendra, both of them received an email from her.

To Jacob and Thomas Reed,

My name is Brianna Desmond, I have been informed of your interest in adopting my unborn child. I would love to meet in person. I know this request may seem a bit unusual. I would like to meet you at your house. Please let me know if and when this works for you.

Regards

Brianna Desmond

“Honestly that request seems reasonable,” Jake said once they read it over. “She probably wants to make sure her baby is taken care of.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard of weirder stuff,” Tom agreed. “So safe to say we agree.”

“Agreed.” Jake laughed. “I don’t have any weddings coming up, do you know when your next day off is?”

“Let me just check the schedule,” Tom said before pulling out his phone.

“We should give her multiple dates,” Jake said as he opened his planner.

“To make sure she’s available when we are,” Tom said along with Jake. Who almost dropped his planner in response.

“What can I say I know you well,” Tom said in a flirtatious tone.

“Stop!” Jake said, trying to push him off but still smiling. “We can’t keep her waiting.”

“Fine,” Tom rolled his eyes but like his husband kept smiling. He held out his phone to show to Jake. “Any of these dates work for you?”

“There think this is a good spread?” Jake said holding a small plate of crackers and veggies.

“Looks good to me.” Tom gave a thumbs up.

“Oh, I think we have some of the gorgonzola dip left.” Jake opened the fridge.

“Don’t pull that out!” Tom suddenly yelled as Jake took it out of the fridge.

“Um I know it was a bit pricey, but I think it would be a good addition.” Jake looked over the container. “It’s not even expired.”

“Brianna is unable to eat soft cheeses. They’re unsafe for pregnant woman to eat.”

“Really?” Jake put the container back before pausing. “Wait how do you know that?”

“When Mom was pregnant with Tony she got mad cravings for soft cheeses. Like at least once a week and she hated it. Jerry and I made so many jokes about it.” Tom laughed upon reflecting on it. “I think that gave her more trouble than seafood.”

“Oh wow.” Jake closed the fridge.

As soon as he did a knock came at the door.

“I think that’s her!” Jake shot up and started adjusting his jacket a little. Quickly he made his way to the door with Tom following close behind. After taking a deep breath, he opened it and was greeted by a young woman.

“Hello there,” she said with a wave. “Jake and Tom Reed?”

“Hello, yes that’s us,” Jake responded with a smile.

“Please come in,” Tom followed up as Brianna walked in. Placing a hand on her stomach as she did.

“I can take your jacket for you,” Tom offered. Brianna nodded as she removed it. Upon doing so, her small bump became noticeable.

“If you mind me asking how far along are you?” Jake asked.

“Almost five months believe it or not,” Brianna laughed.

“Would you like to sit down?” Jake offered. “We got some cracker and veggies if you’re hungry. There’s water out too, but we have other drinks if you would like something else.”

“That’s very generous of you.” Brianna sat down and quietly took a slice of cucumber. “I swear this kid is going to be a cucumber fan it’s all I could stomach for like a week. Worst finals week ever.”

“Oh, you’re in University?” Tom asked.

“Yup. I’m studying communications.” Brianna smiled before frowning. “Mind if I’m upfront about something?”

“Of course.”

“My boyfriend is Filipino.” Brianna braced herself before continuing. “So, the baby is half…”

“Oh, that’s interesting,” Jake responded before thinking. “Kind of random to bring up.”

“Should I message Benji to get in contact with Hannah?” Tom mumbled to himself.

“Sorry I know it’s random, but he came with me to a meeting once and…”

“They gave you a look?” Jake smiled at her. “I’m part Korean. Both of my parents are half, and I didn’t know that for years.”

“That’s honestly kind of reassuring.” Brianna sighed. “I know I’m not going to be in this baby’s life, but I just want to know they’re going to be in a good home. Is that wrong?”

“No that’s completely reasonable.”

Before anyone else could say anything. Gabs jumped on Brianna’s lap and rubbed against her stomach.

“Hello there kitty.” Brianna laughed as she pat Gabs’ head. “Guess you like my old girl at home.”

“You have a cat as well?” Tom’s eye lit up.

“Two actually one of them got very, very clingy.” Brianna kept petting Gabs’ head who kept purring. “She knew I was pregnant from the start.”

The three of them kept talking for a little while. It was just small talk, but it was nice. Gabs not leaving Brianna’s side the entire time, but she didn’t mind. Gently petting the cat as they sat. After a bit, Tom and Jake started showing around the house.

“And this is going to be the baby’s room,” Jake said as he opened the door. Revealing a cozy looking furnished room.

“Wow…” Brianna gasped as she looked around.

“We’re still working on it. Like I would like to add a little something above the crib.” Jake pointed above said crib. “Like nothing to heavying. Maybe something a little thin.”

“I still think the cat donut stickers would have been cute.” Tom beamed at the thought.

“If you find wall stickers sure.” Jake laughed a little.

“I’m looking!” Tom pouted, before smiling. “We’ll find something.”

“Y-you’re the ones…” Brianna said suddenly, face in awe as her hand moved to her stomach.

“Huh?” Tom and Jake said at the same time turning towards Brianna.

“I want you to adopt my baby.” Brianna smiled, tears filling her eyes. “There’s just something about you, that- that tells me they’ll be in good hands. And I think the baby sees it too.”

“Are you serious?”

“I am.” Brianna said with a wide smile. “I’ll talk to Kendra and let her know so we can continue with the process.”

As Brianna promised she let Kendra know and they started preparing for the next steps. A few days later, Tom and Jake got sent an ultrasound of the baby. Their baby. They were so small, so precious, their features barely noticeable but it was perfect. Now it was time, time to finally spread the news.

“Today’s the day!” Tom said excitingly.

“Not going to lie I’m little nervous,” Jake said, shaking a little bit.

“Don’t worry they’ll be supportive.” Tom smiled as he placed some plates down on the table. “Calling it Mom is going to scream.”

“That does sound like her.”

“Hello!” Jackie announced as she walked in.

“Mom!” Tom cheered, running over to hug her. “How are things?”

“They’re going great!” Jackie turned to Jake. “So sweet of you to have a little brunch.”

“Well, we wanted Tony to be able to join,” Jake admitted. “And we know time zones can be tricky.”

“Yeah, he’s been quiet recently, more than he usually is. Probably busy with work.” Jackie smiled. “Both of my boys are hard workers I’ll tell you that.”

“Tony is going to be here, right?” Tom asked quietly.

“He will! I made sure of it!”

“Hey, I’m here too!” Shawn said walking in.

“Hi Shawn.” Jake said with a wave. “Glad you could make it.”

“And miss this? Nah!”

“I’ll go make sure Tony is ready.” Jackie pulled out a laptop and began setting it up.

“Oh, sweet Tony’s gonna join us.” Shawn did a little fist pump. “What’s he’s a cool kid.”

Jake laughed a little and continued setting up the food for the brunch. Which Tom started setting on the table.

“So…” Shawn said tapping on the corner a bit. “Our mom was asking about you…”

“Oh, was she.” Jake paused before mumbling. “Figures.”

“Bad time?” Shawn winced a little. “Sorry.”

“No. Just trying to not let her get under my skin that’s all. I promise it’s nothing you did. Anything she wanted to know?”

“Just how you’re doing and if there were any updates?” Shawn shrugged a little. “I told her the usual, you’re good. Marriage is going well. All that.”

“Thank you.” Jake sighed a little. “I know it’s difficult.”

“It’s the least I can do for you.” Shawn shrugged a little but smiled.

“I hope I’m not interrupting something?” Miriam asked.

“You, never!” Jake put the spoon he was holding down and walked up to hug her.

“Hi Miriam!” Tom yelled with a wave as he kept setting the table.

“I have to admit this was a lovely surprise, been a while since I had a nice brunch like this.”

“What’s the occasion?” Jackie asked innocently.

“To spend time with family.” Tom smiled, before turning to Jake. “Table is all set.”

“Perfect!” Jake placed the last tray on the table. “When everyone is ready, we can began.”

“Oh, perfect timing Tony is online.” Jackie brought the laptop to the table. She started a video call. A few seconds later Tony appeared on screen and waved.

“Ciao,” Tony greeted everyone.

“Hi little bro!” Tom greeted him back with a wide grin. “Glad you could make it.”

“Same here my shift just ended.” Tony soon held up a bowl. “Don’t worry Mom I got food with me.”

“Wish you be here with us,” Jackie sighed. “You’re missing out on the great food Jake makes.”

“Heh thanks.” Jake smiled softly as everyone took their seats.

“This is delicious Jake!” Miriam said after a few minutes of eating.

“Yeah, Jake this is delicious!” Tony yelled, earning a few laughs.

“Thanks Miriam I found the quiche recipe online.” Jake said after taking a bite of it. “I made it for Tom and I before so figured I’d make it here.”

“You got talent little bro!” Shawn said toasting his fork a little.

A few more moments of silence followed. Tom and Jake looked at each other before nodding.

“So, there’s actually a reason we wanted you all here today,” Tom announced, everyone paused what they were doing to look at the couple.

“And before we say it this has been something we’ve been working on for a while…” Jake added, noticing a nervous look on Miriam’s face while Jackie looked a bit puzzled.

Jake took the ultrasound photo again and had Tom hold the other half. Once again Tom smiled at his husband.

“So…” Jake started, a grinned growing on his face.

“We’re adopting a baby!” the two announced holding up the ultrasound for everyone to see.

“Oh my god!” Jackie screamed jumping in the air. “I’m so happy for the two of you!”

“I’m gonna be an uncle!” Shawn gasped.

“Wait are you serious?” Tony asked, while Jackie continued celebrating. “Mom please stop screaming. Can you guys hear me?”

“Yes, to both.” Tom answered as Jake let go of the ultrasound picture. “Mom, do you want to look at your grandchild?”

“Please!” Jackie wiped a few tears. “Oh, they’re a cutie already. Miriam look at the little one.”

“Aww how precious.” Miriam admired the picture a little. “Do you know the gender yet?”

“No.” Jake shook his head a little. “But we should find out soon.”

“It’s girl though. I’m calling it!” Tom crossed his arms with a smile, as Jake rolled his eyes a little.

“We just want a healthy baby.” Jake nudged his husband a bit. “Right Tom?”

“Of course!” Tom pouted a little. “I just have a feeling it’s a girl that’s all.”

“So, this is my nibling,” Shawn said as he was handed the ultrasound, earning him some blank stares. “It’s real term…”

“Hey if you don’t mind me asking when is the baby due?” Tony asked, pulling out his phone.

“Around mid-August. I believe around the 16th” Tom responded tapping his chin a little.

“Oh, cool I’ll see if I can get time off work and fly over..”

“You mean you’ll actually come!” Tom’s eyes lit up.

“Yeah, I mean might as well be cool to meet my nibling.”

“Oh, look Tony knows it’s a real a word!” Shawn smirked, as Jake rolled his eyes. Though Tom couldn’t help but laugh as Jackie glanced at Jake.

The rest of brunch went along smoothly. Tom and Jake answered all the questions they could and giving the best answers as they could. But as they spoke, Jake couldn’t help but start shaking. He should be feeling more excited. This is something he and Tom wanted but why was he mostly feeling nervous.

“Well, I haven’t thought about much about the names but I have-” Tom started to say before noticing something. “Tony, are you paying attention?”

“Huh?” Tony looked up from his phone. “Yes, I um am…”

“I’m going to grab the fruit pastries.” Jake said as he suddenly started to stand up. “I’ll be right back.”

Jake walked into the kitchen gathering everything. He could Tom teasing Tony in the background and smiled. But still, he couldn’t stop shaking. Then he felt a hand on his shoulder.

“Dah!” Jake gasped, jumping up.

“Sorry Jake,” Jackie said as Jake turned around. “I just wanted to check on you.”

“Check on me?” Jake raised an eyebrow.

“I know I may just be your mother-in-law.” Jackie laughed a little. “But I know you like I know my boys. What’s going on Jake?”

Jake stood there for a second. Jackie smiling warmly at him. Almost motherly…

“I’m, I’m worried I’m going to be like them!” Jake realized out loud before covering his mouth. “Oh god, why I am worried about that!”

“Hey, hey,” Jackie said taking Jake’s hands gently in hers. “It’s a normal thing to feel. It’s good that you’re realizing that.”

“It’s stupid I shouldn’t be I know their mistakes.” Jake gripped his shirt. “I don’t want this child going through everything I had too just to be happy.”

“They won’t.” Jackie smiled supportively. “I have faith you and Tom are going to be great dads. And this baby is going into good hands. Adoption is a process and you’re going through every step, that should be something right?”

“Right.” Jakes smiled, wiping away a tear that was forming. Jackie for her part turned her head back to the dining table.

“Aha you’re seeing someone admit it, Tony!” Tom’s voice yelled from the other room, causing Jake to chuckle.

“You should talk to him,” Jackie said with a smile. “I have a feeling he has similar thoughts.”

“I will.”

That night Tom and Jake sat on the couch silently as the tv played in the background. Jake was drinking some tea he had made while Tom was happily petting Gabs.

“Tom.” Jake placed his cup down and turned towards his husband. “Can we talk about something?”

“Of course.” Tom turned towards Jake. “What’s on your mind babe?”

“Before I continue, let me just say I wholeheartedly want to continue with the adoption.” Jake took a deep breath before speaking again. “But I’m scared Tom. Scared I’ll be just like them! Scared my own child’s life will be ruined by me! That it will take them years to find happiness they deserve. And the closer the day gets, the more scared I am!”

Tom placed his hand on Jake’s. Jake looked into Tom’s eyes before embracing his husband.

“It’s stupid,” Jake continued, burying his head into Tom. “I know what they did to cause me pain and yet I can’t help but fear I’ll repeat those mistakes. I want our baby to have everything I never had. Especially parents who love them…”

“It’s not stupid.” Tom spoke softly. “I understand how you’re feeling.”

“You’re lucky to have your mom…” Jake mumbled.

“I know. But I still have these fears.” Tom ended the hug, gingerly wiping away tears from Jake’s eyes. “But I remember your vows and how we’re a team. We’ll get through these fears together.”

“You’ll always be there for when I need you?”

“I’d rather die than abandon you,” Tom proclaimed as Jake cupped hiss cheeks.

“Have I said how lucky I am to have you?”

“I think I’m the lucky one.”

“I love you, Tom.”

“I love you too, Jake.”

With that Jake pulled Tom close into a kiss.

“And good news the doctors said everything is looking well,” Brianna said as she Tom and Jake sat at a café.

“That’s great to hear.” Jake smiled.

“I got some more ultrasound pictures too.” Brianna reached into her bag and pulled out a folder. Excitedly she slid them across the table.

Tom and Jake opened the folder and started admiring their baby. Their face was becoming clearer. In one picture it even appeared they were waving. Even with the little they had the baby was perfect.

“Wait what’s this sticky note for?” Jake said noticing a blank green sticky note over part of the picture.

“That’s the baby’s gender!” Brianna said excitedly. “I asked them to cover it up so you two would be the first to know.”

“Oh my god!” Jake gasped.

“Shall we?” Tom said, taking one corner on the note. Jake nodded and took the opened on the opposite side. Slowly they peeled it off the letters slowly revealing:

Girl

“It’s a girl!” Tom squealed. “I knew it!”

“Hi baby girl,” Jake said softly looking at the picture.

“Heh, they or I guess now she, really likes your voice Jake,” Brianna said with a laugh. Jake raised an eyebrow before she continued. “I’ve been playing those songs you sang on the show you were on for her, so she gets familiar with your voice. She has recently developed a habit of kicking when she hears your voice, in particular Jake. She even just kicked now.”

“She did!” Jake gasped before looking at the pictures some more.

“I’m being serious!” Brianna placed a hand on her stomach.

“Aww she’s already a daddy’s girl!” Tom teased. “She loves you, Jake.”

“Hmm,” Jake sighed. “I guess she does.”

“Maybe this…” Jake said holding his phone toward the wall above his future daughter’s crib and looking at a painting of a rainbow he found online. “No maybe too on the nose for the daughter of gay dads…”

Jake kept scrolling and looking at different pictures. From bunnies, to flowers, to even one of an alpaca. But none of them felt right.

“Aha I knew I find you here!” Tom said poking his head. He walked into the room holding his laptop.

“Sorry I’m still trying to find something for above her crib.” Jake explained before looking at a drawing of bears before shaking his head.

“Well, I think I found something!” Tom said excitedly. “I found this artist that makes word cravings on names. They’re thin so we don’t have to worry about falling or anything. Picture it, Mary Reed right above the crib.”

“It could be…” Jake began before pausing. “Wait did you say Mary?”

“Oh well I just figured that we were going to name her after your grandma.” Tom started to rub the back of his head.

“I mean I considered it…” Jake rubbed his arm. “But it doesn’t feel right. I would rather have it as her middle name if you don’t mind.”

“Mind?” Tom laughed a bit. “Babe of course I don’t mind. Do you have any ideas for her name?”

“Not at the moment…”

“Well, my mom didn’t name Tony until he was born. She said she didn’t want to get attached to a name and it not fitting him. I’m sure we can think of something.” Tom took Jake’s hand. “A perfect name for a perfect girl.”

The next few months were busy for Tom and Jake. Both of them making sure everything was ready for their daughter. Jackie, Miriam, and even Shawn helping out when they can. Jake still had his fears, but when they came up, Tom was always there to support him. Luckily, he kept himself busy, even when not dealing with clients or weddings, he tried to think of names for daughter, adding the last touches to her room, just anything he could think of. He was going to be a good dad, and nothing would stop him.

“Four more days!” Jake thought as he looked at the date on his phone. A mixture of excitement and nervousness.

“Morning babe!” Tom said excitedly.

“Morning!” Jake responded.

“Getting excited?” Tom asked with a smile.

“Yeah,” Jake sighed. “It’s crazy how close we…”

Jake’s phone was ringing.

“Hmm?” Tom started walking closer.

“It’s Brianna…” Jake’s voice dropped. Slowly he answered it. “Hello?”

“Hello Jake,” Brianna said tiredly. “Is Tom with you?”

“He is. Are you okay?” Jake asked nervously as Tom approached, sitting next to Jake.

“I am. Can you put me on speaker?”

“Okay.” Jake nervously pressed the button.

“She’s here.” Brianna said excitedly. “She was born two hours ago.”

Tom and Jake looked at each other in shock.

“I-is she okay?” Tom asked, wrapping his arm around Jake.

“She’s got strong lungs,” Brianna said with a small laugh. “From what I’ve seen she’s pretty healthy.”

“That’s good to hear,” Jake said with a smile.

A few hours later, Tom and Jake were sitting at the hospital. Tom sitting with his arms crossed while Jake tapped his foot, rubbing his arms a little.

“Good news,” Kendra said as she walked into the room. “The representative from the hospital is currently talking to Brianna. Don’t worry, it’s completely normal process.”

Jake nodded as Tom wrapped his arms around him. His husband’s touch calming his nerves a lot. He could hear the clock ticking. Tom keeping him close, doing his best to seem calm but Jake could tell he was nervous.

Soon the hospital representative came in.

“Mr. and Mr. Reed?” the representative asked as the two looked up. “I finished my conversation with Ms. Desmond, and she has agreed to continue the process, it will just take a day or so to file paperwork and then you can take her home. We’ll have a nurse come to bring your daughter to meet you soon.”

With that the representative and Kendra left. Once alone Tom and Jake turned to each other and immediately embraced.

“She’s here,” Jake said as tears formed in his eyes. “She’s actually here. A-and going to be ours.”

“I can’t wait to meet her.” Tom hugged Jake tighter.

The two stayed embracing for a moment until they heard a knock on the room door. As it opened, Tom and Jake slowly left their embrace, but Tom kept his arm around Jake. A nurse started to walk in pushing a bassinet. Their eyes lit up, as they saw her, their daughter. Fast asleep.

Tom and Jake stood up as the nurse left them alone. Slowly they approached the bassinet. And there she was, their daughter. Wrapped in a soft pink blanket and wearing matching hat on her head. This was their daughter. Their actual daughter.

“She’s perfect.” Jake said in awe as he kept admiring his daughter. The thought still being a surreal to him.

The baby soon started to squirm a little.

“Aww it’s okay baby girl,” Tom said reaching toward her. “We’re your daddies. It’s so exciting to finally meet you.”

“And we love you already,” Jake added. As he spoke, the baby calmed down and slowly opened her eyes.

“I think she wants you babe,” Tom spoke softly.

Slowly Jake reached into the bassinet, cupping his daughter’s head with one hand and supporting her body with the other. Gently he brought her close to him. Her eyes not leaving him for a second.

“Heh, you know your daddy don’t you…” Jake paused, before smiling. “Charlotte.”

“Charlotte?” Tom titled his head before smiling as well.

“I think it suits her,” Jake glanced at Tom and smiled before turning back to his baby. “Charlotte Mary Reed.”

“Hmm,” Tom moved a little closer. “It’s perfect for her.”

“You want to hold her?” Jake said holding out Charlotte a bit. Tom nodded as Jake passed their daughter to him. Charlotte squirmed a bit but soon settled down.

“She’s so tiny,” Tom said as he admired her. Charlotte started rubbing her head slowly against Tom. “Heh, I think she likes the jacket.”

“Maybe she’ll grow into it.”

“No, she’s staying small.”

The two of them spent the rest of the day with Charlotte. Taking turns holding her. Accompanying her to her newborn checkups if able. Telling her all about her family. In those few hours she felt like theirs. When it was time for them to leave her, both had to whole back tears, promising they would be back tomorrow.

The next day the two of them were back to see her as soon as they were allowed to. And almost as soon as they got there, they got the word that she was ready to go home. The two of them eagerly signed the required paperwork and buckled her in her car seat.

“Welcome home Charlotte!” Tom said as he opened the door to their home. The new family of three walked inside, Charlotte currently asleep in her car seat.

“This is still so surreal,” Jake admitted looking at her. “She’s here. She’s ours.”

A meow soon came as Gabs hopped on the table and sniffed the car seat a little.

“Gabs this is your baby sister.” Tom lifted the cover to the car seat. Gabs slowly approached and sniffed the baby a little. Soon the cat started to purr and gently rubbed her head against the baby. “Aww good kitty!”

“Glad you like her.” Jake petted the cat on the head. “Cause she’s staying with us for now on.”

“Is she here?” Jackie as she walked into the house.

“Mom!” Tony complained from behind her. “Couldn’t you have at least waited until we’re inside.”

“Tony!” Tom said excitedly walking over to hug his brother. “It’s so good to see you!”

“Yeah, good to see you too.” Tony rubbed the back of his head and smiled.

“Tom, you want to get her,” Jake asked as he walked in.

“On it!”

“How was the flight, Tony?” Jake asked as he approached the two.

“Pretty good.”

“Oh, I’m so happy for you two!” Jackie squealed as she hugged Jake tightly. “Everything is okay with her right? I know you said she was due on the 16th.”

“She passed everything with fly colors,” Jake grinned. “I guess she was as excited to meet us as we were to meet her.”

A knock was heard at the door and Jake opened it to see Shawn and Miriam.

“Congratulations Jake!” Miriam greeted hugging Jake tightly.

“Thanks Miriam!” Jake responded.

“Hey bro!” Shawn said with a wave. “Congratulations.”

“Hey Shawn. Come on in, Tom is actually on his way down with her.”

The two of them walked in as everyone sat on or near the couch. Jackie putting a pink bag on the table as she did. Jake called up to Tom telling him Shawn and Miriam were here.

“Here she is!” Tom said excitedly as he entered the living room. Adjusting it so Charlotte’s face could be seen.

“I’m an uncle!” Shawn said excitedly.

“Mom, would you like to hold her?” Tom asked as Jackie nodded. Tom walked over to her and handed his mom Charlotte.

“She’s beautiful,” Jackie said. “Does she have a name?”

“Mom they wouldn’t have let them take from the hospital is she did!” Tony commented.

“Well, I would like to know her name,” Miriam interjected. “I would prefer to call her something other than the baby.”

Tom and Jake looked at each other and nodded before saying, “Charlotte Mary Reed!”

“What a lovely name for a lovely girl.” Miriam placed a hand on her heart.

“Mary? Like Grandma?” Shawn gasped before smiling.

“Well, I did want to honor her, but Mary never felt right as her first name.” Jake rubbed the back of his head. “So, we went with the middle name route.”

“Honestly knowing Grandma, she would have preferred that.”

“Well, I think it’s a perfect name for her!” Jackie said looking at Charlottle a bit.

Charlottle squirmed a bit before opening her eyes and started looking around.

“Oh, shoot did we wake her…” Shawn said awkwardly.

“She woke up on her own it seems,” Jake said as Charlotte eye’s darted in his direction.

“Aww I think she likes you Jake,” Miriam sighed as Jake laughed a little.

“Oh! I hope you don’t mind but I got her a little something.” Jackie adjusted Charlotte as Tony handed Jackie the pink bag. Jackie reached in and pulled out a pink bear with a matching pink bow on its neck. “Nana got this for you, Charlotte.”

For her part, Charlotte stared at it and moved her arms a little. Jackie moved the bear a little closer, allowing Charlotte to move her hand a to pet it the best way she could.

“How did Gabs react to her?” Miriam asked with a slight eyebrow raised. “I know my old cat was bit apprehensive when Jonathan and I brought Kurt home.”

“Oh, Gabs loved her!” Tom said excitedly. “She’s already a good big sister!”

“How sweet,” Jackie looked around a bit. “Tony, you want to hold her?”

“Shawn can hold her first,” Tony gestured to him. “I don’t mind waiting.”

Jackie obliged and handed Charlotte to her uncle. Shawn grimaced a little holding her gently.

“Please don’t cry, please don’t cry, please don’t cry,” Shawn whispered as he held Charlotte. Who for her part pouted in seemingly offense at the comment.

“Shawn?” Jake asked.

“I’m doing my best.” Shawn pulled Charlotte closer to him for a bit.

“Actually, I was going to ask if you would want to be her godfather?”

“Seriously!” Shawn gasped as Jake nodded. “Of course I will. Don’t worry Charlotte Uncle Shawn will make sure you’re in good hands!”

Charlotte stuck out her tongue a little as Shawn gasped. But he soon smiled again.

“Okay Tony you’re turn!” Shawn said after a few minutes.

“Shouldn’t Miri-”

“Jake mind if I get a drink?” Miriam asked as she stood up, leaving Tony with an unamused face.

Shawn proceeded to pass Charlotte to Tony, and Jackie helped him with his arm placement.

“There,” Jackie said softly. “She’ll be comfy there. Just keep supporting her.”

“Hi there Charlotte. Um I’m your Uncle Tony.” Tony greeted the baby. Jackie grinned as she snapped a picture. “Mom!”

“Aww but Tony you look so cute, I just couldn't help it!” Jackie sighed before giving a slight smirk. “Besides Eesha might find it cute!”

“Oh yeah your little girlfriend,” Tom teased with a wide grin.

“Hey, hey today isn’t about me!” Tony said before pointing to Charlotte. “It’s about her.”

“Who knows we could be talking about her aunt!” Tom giggled a little, soon joined by Jackie. Tony’s face proceeded to turn tomato red.

“Charlotte promise me you’ll be on my side for these things?” Tony whispered to his niece, who made a slight sound. “Thank you.”

Miriam proceeded to walk back into the room and returned to her seat. A few minutes later, Tony passed Charlotte to her. Miriam smiled holding her like it was second nature to her.

“My aren’t you beautiful,” Miriam said stroking the baby’s face. She glanced at Tom and Jake before looking back at Charlotte. “You have two great dads I will tell you that. And I can tell they love you very much.”

“I agree to that,” Jackie said. “This little girl is in good hands.”

That night Jake was lying on the bed. Charlotte lying next to him, propped up on pillows, sound asleep. His eyes not leaving her for a second.

“You are beautiful,” Jake whispered to her.

“Should we move her to her crib?” Tom asked as he laid on the other side of Charlotte.

“Hmm, not right now.” Jake still admired his daughter, gently placing a hand on her. “I still can’t believe she’s real. I never thought I would have something like this.”

Tom placed a hand on top of Jake’s.

“I felt the same way.” Tom smiled at his husband. “But we made it possible.”

Charlotte let out a little yawn before adjusting herself on the pillows.

“Oh, sorry did we wake you?” Tom laughed a little as Charlotte continued sleeping.

“Charlotte,” Jake adjusted himself a little. “I promise you. I’m going to be the best dad ever for you. You’re going to know so much love and support. You’ll never know the pain I felt. All you’ll know is happiness.”

“You got a really good dad over there,” Tom said stroking the baby’s cheek gently.

“Two great dads.” Jake smiled at Tom. And the two soon fell asleep, excited for their new life with Charlotte.

Notes:

Finally got this chapter done! I love the idea of Tom and Jake adopting kids eventually. I decided to give them a daughter cause I always pictured them with one. I also named her Charlotte since I know Mary seems to be popular for Jake kids and I wanted mine to stand out a bit. Plus I can see Jake not wanting to name his daughter Mary but I can also understand other authors going that route.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed this fic!
