Work Text:
Suga paced back and forth in front of the door. He knew he had to do this; it shouldn’t be hard to confess to your best friend of three years, right?
God, who was he kidding? It was terrifying, but he spent weeks preparing himself for this moment, and he couldn’t afford to lose his courage now.
He rang the doorbell and wondered how fear could make three seconds feel like an eternity.
Daichi opened the door, and Suga let himself inside before a greeting could even leave the brunette’s lips.
“I have something to tell you,” Suga said.
“Okay? Go for it,” Daichi replied.
Suga let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in.
“I’ve been in love with you for six months. Honestly, maybe longer, but I just realized what this feeling was six months ago, and I want to know if there’s even a crumb of a chance that you might find me even a tiny bit attractive and could possibly, maybe, ever see yourself seeing me in that way. Okay, that’s all, bye!”
Before he could quickly – and so bravely – make his escape, Daichi stopped him.
“You love me?”
Suga’s mouth gaped open. Oh God, Suga knew this was a mistake. Look what he’s done now. He’s made Daichi, his best friend, not only that, but his teammate, uncomfortable. He never should have come here. This was a mistake, this was a –
Daichi interrupted his spiraling train of thought.
“Why did you wait so long to tell me?”
Another question Suga lacked the answer to. Thankfully, or maybe not, Daichi had a follow-up question to break the silence.
“We graduate in two weeks, is that why you told me now?”
Thank the stars up above. This question, Suga could answer.
“Well… yeah. It just kind of felt like if I didn’t do it now I’d lose my nerve and my chance to tell you before we graduate and never see each other again.”
At this point, Daichi laughed, and wow, was Suga so glad to hear it.
“What do you mean ‘never see each other again?’ We’re going to the same university. We were always going to keep seeing each other.”
Damn, he’s right, and now Suga feels stupid on top of his steadily growing humiliation.
“Well, I guess, I just assumed that we would be too busy to see each other or that –”
“You’re saying ‘well’ a lot, you know that?” Daichi interrupted him again, and Suga had never been so grateful for someone to talk over him. “And that’s my bad, I should’ve answered your question before giving you some of my own.”
Daichi stepped closer to Suga. Close enough that Suga’s back met the wall, and he had nowhere else to look but at Daichi’s serious expression.
“Sugawara Koshi, I do love you.”
Suga had no idea the sound of his own name could make him so happy.
“And I do find you incredibly attractive.”
Fireworks were going off in Suga’s brain, and butterflies were running amok in his stomach. He wanted to stop Daichi right there, but then the brunette took Suga’s hands in his.
“And I want to be your boyfriend.”
Suga felt his face slowly morph into a nice shade of bright tomato red, and just as he was going to stammer out a reply, Daichi continued.
“Can I kiss you… please?”
What else could Suga say to that but yes?
Suga grabbed Daichi’s face and brought their lips together. It was enthusiastic, it was fun, it was so very sweet. He never wanted to stop kissing Daichi – scratch that – his boyfriend – for even a second. Daichi’s lips were so soft, and his body melted perfectly against Suga’s as he moved one arm next to his head against the wall and the other coming up to cup Suga’s face.
Unfortunately, the Perfect Kiss couldn’t last forever, on account of the fact that they both needed air to breathe, and Daichi was the one to put some space between them.
“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” Daichi said, and that’s when Suga noticed the subtle pink tint to his cheeks, too.
“No, but now we have all the time in the world for you to tell me. You can start off by telling me why I had to make the first move.” Suga swatted Daichi’s arm. “Why did I have to be the brave one, huh, you’re the captain here?”
At this point, Daichi’s cheeks went from pink to crimson.
“I planned on telling you eventually. Actually, my plan was to wait til graduation cause I thought it’d be romantic to confess to you on our first day of summer vacation.” A smile started growing on Daichi’s face. “I had no idea you’d beat me to it and make me a lucky man so soon.”
“Somebody had to get the ball rolling. I can’t believe you were willing to wait two more weeks. I came up with this plan yesterday, and it was killing me to not just come over at 3 a.m.”
“If you came over at 3 a.m. to tell me you love me, we’d do a lot more than confess to one another,” Daichi replied as he took hold of Suga’s waist. “But I’d say your timing today is pretty perfect cause everybody’s out for the day.” He pushed Suga gently against the wall again. “So is there anything else you can think of doing right now?”
Suga noticed the wicked glint in his eye, but purposely ignored it, just to torture Daichi a bit.
“Now that you mention it, I’ve got a couple ideas,” Suga replied in his sweetest voice to match Daichi’s low tone. “I wanna watch Rubber.”
“I’m sorry, I think I misheard you. Did you say you want to watch Rubber or that you want to watch me put on a rubber?”
“It’s a movie. I’ve heard it’s absolutely horrible, and I wanna watch it with you.” Suga flashed Daichi one of his nicest smiles. “I actually wanted to watch it with you this weekend, but why wait? I’ll get the movie ready while you get the popcorn.”
And just like that, Suga gave his dumbstruck Daichi a quick peck on the cheek and headed toward the living room to keep good on his part of the deal.
He could, eventually, hear Daichi drag his feet to the kitchen and make the popcorn. Then, when he made it to the living room, he took the spot right next to Suga and put his arm around him. Like that’s something he’s always done. Like it was the most natural thing in the world.
As the movie started, Suga mentally summarized his day. In the morning, he put on his lucky socks, then spent the afternoon confessing to his best friend – now boyfriend – and ended the night munching on popcorn while watching possibly the worst movie he’s ever seen in his life.
To top it all off and make this great day into the best ever, once their shared bowl was empty, Daichi took Suga into his arms, and they finished the movie like that. Holding each other with Daichi breathing in hints of Suga’s shampoo and Suga tracing hearts on his boyfriend’s chest.
