Work Text:
When Tomoe entered the room, Nanami was in the middle of putting on her mascara, hand frozen mid-air and mouth hanging open. She never remembered opening it—Maybe a subconscious thing?—but it somehow seemed to make the process a bit smoother.
Tomoe stared at her for moment, as if inspecting her. “What are you doing?“
“Hm?“
“The thing that you’re putting on, what is it?“
She turned her head in his direction, holding up the bottle up for him to see better. “You mean this?“
He nodded his head lightly.
“That’s a mascara. It’s used to make your eyelashes appear longer and denser.“
“Why would you need that? I don’t see a reason for it.“ His brow was slightly scrunched up, maybe in confusion? Nanami couldn’t quite work it out. Nonetheless, she found it absolutely adorable.
She let out a soft hum, thinking it over. “For aesthetics mostly. Humans can get quite vain.“
“So everybody uses this thing?“
“Not really,” she replied lightly. “A lot of women do, but it’s also getting popular with men!“
His brow scrunched up further. Seems like he was more confused. She wanted to get up and poke his forehead. It was too cute. “I still don’t get it.“
An idea started forming in her mind. “Well, how about I show you?”
“Show me?“ his voice was high, clearly taken aback.
“Yep! I can do your make-up real quick!“ she offered, grinning wild at the thought of it. She had no doubt he would look even more pretty. “It’s gonna be easier to understand when you see the result for yourself!”
“So you’re gonna use that thing?“
Nanami hummed in agreement. “Other products too, not just mascara!“
“Like what?“ he sounded hesitant.
“Like lipstick!” she began, voice excited. “Maybe a little eyeliner! Oh, also some BB cream! Definitely blush too!“
He stared at her for a second. Then another, processing what she said. When it finally registered for him, he brought his left arm to his mouth, index finger touching his lips. “I don’t know…“
“Oh, come on!” she pressed, eyes glaring at him. “You’re gonna look so good!“
He averted his eyes from her, staring at the wall instead.
“Please!“
One more moment passed, during which Nanami didn’t dare look away from Tomoe.
Then, finally, he sighed in defeat. “Fine.“
“Yes!” she exclaimed. A little more loudly than she meant to. In an attempt to cover it up, she let out a soft cough. She should try to contain her excitement a little better. “Go wash your face and come back.“
“But I already did in the morning,“ he furrowed his brow once more. “Isn’t that enough?“
“Nope. Skin gets dirty and oily as the day goes by.“ She rolled her eyes. “Now shoo. I will prepare the necessary products. And make sure you dry up properly or the products won’t stick to your skin!“ she yelled as he was leaving the room.
When he re-appeared a few minutes later, Nanami made him sit in her place—a simple table, located in front of a window, with a medium-sized mirror sitting on top of it.
“Alright! I see that you did a good job drying up, so we can start!“
He gave her an anxious look in response.
“Oh, don’t be a baby. It’s not gonna hurt,” she promised, hoping it would ease his nerves.
“First, I’m gonna put a primer on you.” She got a little glass bottle, put two pumps on her fingers and spread it on Tomoe’s face. As she was applying the cream, Tomoe’s face visibly relaxed.
“Feels nice, right?“ she said, with a smirk
Tomoe didn’t answer, just hummed.
“This is used to hydrate and prepare your skin,“ she explained.
Next, she moved on to the BB cream. A part of her was expecting it to be off from Tomoe’s skin shade, but it matched surprisingly well.
“Why are you applying this? I don’t really see a difference.”
“It evens out the pigment! Plus it freshens up your face!“ she said, as she tilted Tomoe’s head slightly. “Look.“
His eyes met hers in the mirror—they were now filled with curiosity, as opposed to the previous hesitance. “Normally, you don’t pay attention to this, but your neck is a slightly different shade compared to your face.“ She lightly brushed her hand against Tomoe’s neck. “This cream makes the difference less noticeable.“
She couldn't help but press a quick kiss against his neck. It pulled her in, with how slender it was.
Tomoe shivered slightly under her touch. “Hey!“
“What? I can’t kiss my boyfriend?“ she said sheepishly.
He glared at her for moment, before he gave up. She’d take this as a win.
Next things on her makeover agenda were blush and lip gloss. Since she had a two-in-one liquid blush, she decided to apply them in one go. “Try to open your mouth slightly and relax your lips,“ she instructed next.
She saw Tomoe oblige, but he opened it a bit too wide. She couldn’t help but chuckle a little. “Almost there.” There was no harm in helping him out a little. She opened her own mouth as an example. “See, I need only about this much.“
He quickly followed—it made her smile. “Yes, exactly. Thank you.“
With swift movements, she applied it to his upper and lower lips. He raised his hand, lightly touching the lipstick.
“I know that it feels oily, but it really makes your lips pop! You’ll get used to it.“ Her smile grew wider. Both at Tomoe’s actions and the sight in front of her. She was right and she couldn’t be happier about it.
Tomoe looked absolutely stunning.
It made her breath catch in her throat.
“I see,“ he said quietly. His eyes found hers in the mirror. “Are you okay, Nanami?“ There was a tang of worry in his voice.
“Yes! Yes, yes! Never been better!“ she blurred out. It seemed Tomoe didn’t quite believe her, since the slight frown on his face didn’t disappear. “I swear I’m okay! I just—“ she trailed off, as her cheeks grew warmer, “—I knew you were gonna look good, but I was not prepared for just how good you would look.“
This time it was Tomoe’s turn to grin. “Oh?“
She wanted to slap his shit-eating grin. “Were you for real doubting my good looks?“ he put a hand on his chest, tugging at his clothes dramatically. “I’m hurt, Nanami. I thought better of you.“
“Shut up!“ she shouted. “I’m not gonna finish your look!“
He gasped sharply. “First you insult me and now you threaten me?! I see how it is.“
“I said, shut it!“ She gave him a light slap on the shoulders.
Even though he was being a little shit, Nanami was glad that he relaxed enough to tease her like that. Now she had something more important to do—finish her masterpiece. All that was left was the blush and the mascara.
She could do this!
Since Tomoe’s cheeks were already defined, it’d suit him to snatch up his face a little further. She started applying the blush at his temple, bringing it to his cheek bones, blending it along the way.
And finally, the mascara. The product that started it all.
“I know this is gonna be little uncomfortable for you but—“ She opened the bottle with a swift motion, bringing it to his eye-level. “—try to keep your eyes open.“
He lightly shook his head.
Despite her worries, he actually followed her instructions pretty well—staying still and keeping his eyes unblinking. She did her best to get it over with as soon as she could and not torture him too much. His eyes did water a little at the second brush of the mascara wand initially, but that was to be expected for a first time. He did a lot better when she moved on to the second eye.
He would get used to it with time, if he chose to continue with make-up.
But, aside from that… that was it.
The final touch.
She stepped aside, so Tomoe could see himself better, without her getting in the way.
“What do you think?“ Nanami held her breath, awaiting his reaction as he started himself in the mirror.
He didn’t say anything, at first—just turned his head from left to right—inspecting every part of his face. Then—
“I love it, actually?“ his words almost startled her. And himself too, from the stunned expression on his face.
“You do?“
“I do. I’m surprised.“ His voice was unsure, almost like he was waiting for Nanami’s approval.
She couldn’t help but chuckle. “What happened to the confidence from earlier?“
He turned his head to the side. “You know, that I was just messing with you.“
“I do.“ She cupped his face with her hand. “I’m not surprised you look good.“ Her thumb pressed gently on his cheek. “You just exceed my expectations.“ She leaned in.
His lips were soft from the lip gloss. It was hypnotic.
He returned her kiss, deepening it.
When they pulled away to breathe, he said softly. “You were right. I get it now.“
She raised her eyebrows in surprise, to which Tomoe gave her a small smile.
“I think I want to do this again at some point.“
