Sea of stars

Summary:

Starnap takes Oceanday on a special date for their anniversary

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

It was a calm afternoon, and Starnap was at his favorite place down by the salted sea, waiting for his lover to come up to see him.

They had officially been ‘together’ for about 5 years now, and his friend Astrophel suggested that the two of them go on a special date for their ‘Anniversary’, which was supposedly an earth tradition to celebrate the day you fell in love, or at least that’s how she had described it.

So, for this so-called anniversary, Starnap wanted to take Oceanday to do something that neither of them had ever done before.

While he was thinking about this, he heard a splash of water, looking down to see his beloved had arrived, smiling at him.

Starnap smiles.
“Hello, my pearl.”
He says, getting up.

Oceanday giggles.
“Hi starlight!” He says. “What are you up to today?”

Starnap kneels down, gently picking his sweet dogfish up bridal style.
“Waiting for you.”
He says. “I have something to ask you.”

Oceanday nods as Starnap sits back down, setting the seadog on his lap.
“What is it?”

Starnap purrs, nuzzling him,
“Well, it’s our ‘anniversary’, and I want to do something special for you.”

He pulls out a flier from his pocket.

“There’s something called a ‘traveling fair’ in the nearby town for a couple of nights.”
He says. “Do you wanna go?”

Oceanday takes the flier, his eyes sparkling as he reads it.
“Oooh yes!” He says.
“I’ve heard about fairs before, but I've never been to one.”

Starnap smiles.
“Awesome!” He says.

“Can you put me down so I can transform?”
Oceanday asks.

Starnap nods, getting up and walking a bit before gently setting him back into the water, Oceanday diving a bit deeper.

Then, in a flash of light, Oceanday had his land legs again, so to speak, walking out of the ocean with a sweet smile.

Starnap sighs dreamily.

“Beautiful…”

Oceanday giggles, swatting the air. “Oh stop it you.”

Starnap takes his waist, pulling him close.
“Never~”
He says, purring.

Oceanday wraps his arms around Starnap’s shoulders, nose nuzzling him.
“You big flirt~”

Starnap nuzzles back, purring.
“Only for you, my gorgeous sea jewel…”

The two kiss softly for a few seconds.

It still astounded Starnap that no matter how many times they kissed, each one made his heart beat just as fast as the first time.

After their little love session, the two started off on their way to the fair.

~Star transition~

It was now early evening, and Starnap and Oceanday were standing outside the entrance to the fair.

Oceanday gently takes Starnap’s hand.
“So, ready to go in?”

Starnap smiles, kinda nervous.
“As I'll ever be.”

As they walked into the fair, the atmosphere was unlike any they’d seen.

There was cheerful music playing, the smell of tasty food in the air, and the sound of rides and people talking and happily squealing on said rides.

It kinda reminded Starnap of the lights used on spaceships actually.

“Woah…”
Oceanday says, his eyes sparkling.

“Yeah, I agree…”
Starnap adds.

He looks to his lover.
“So… what do you wanna do?”

Oceanday thinks.
“I’m kinda hungry…”
He says. “Wanna get something to eat?”

Starnap nods. “Yeah, I could eat.”

The two walk around, looking for food.
Suddenly, something catches Oceanday’s eye.

“Oooh, funnel cake!”
He says, pointing it out. “Let’s get some!”

Starnap was confused. “You’ve had it before?”

“Well no, but I've heard about it!” He says. “And I've always wanted to try it.”

Starnap shrugs.
“Okay, whatever you say.” He says, going to buy some.

Once they had the funnel cake, they sat down on a nearby bench to share it.

When Oceanday takes a bite, his eyes light up.

“Wow!”
He says, eating another piece. “This is one of the best things I've ever tasted!”

Starnap quirks a brow.
“Is it really THAT good…?”

Oceanday nods, offering him a piece. “Try it!”

When the flavor hits Starnap’s tongue, it’s like his whole mouth is partying.
His eyes sparkle for a moment.

“It’s not very good.”
He says, eating another piece. “I don’t think you’ll want any more.”

Oceanday giggles. “Oh hush.”
He says, getting another piece.

The two continued to share the funnel cake until it was all gone, Starnap throwing away the empty paper plate in a nearby trash can.

“What do you want to do next?”
He asks when he gets back to Oceanday.

The seadog looks around, seeing all the rides.

“Hmm… I’m kinda interested in the Ferris wheel, but I also kinda want to go to the haunted house…”

Starnap nods.
“Alright, which one do you wanna do first…?”

Oceanday shrugs. “Rock paper scissors?”

Starnap nods, making his hand into a fist. “Me for haunted house, you for Ferris wheel.”

Ocean day nods, doing the same.

“Ro-Cham-BEAU!”

Oceanday used paper while Starnap used scissors.

“Darn it!”
Oceanday says.

Starnap giggles as he pretends to cut Oceanday’s hand, then stands up.
“Come on, sweetie.” He says. “Spooks await us.”

They walk over to the haunted house, waiting in line for a bit before getting seated side by side into a small black cart, the metal bar lowering down onto their laps.

Oceanday holds Starnap’s hand tightly as the cart rolls into the darkness.

They were greeted with old, creaky wooden walls with projections of ghosts and spirits, yarn spider webs covering the walls, and spooky music playing from old, tinny speakers.

Starnap feels Oceanday’s hand shaking in his.
“S-starry… I'm scared…”

Starnap gently nuzzles his head.
“It’s okay, love… I'm right here…”

Oceanday nods, gulping and scooting a bit closer as the cart rolls through a scene of a spooky graveyard, with more ghost projections, wiggling tombstones, and a large, shiny moon with projections of bats flying across it.

Suddenly, a silly cardboard cutout of a skeleton pops up from behind a tombstone, making Oceanday jump and yelp.
He whimpers, clinging to his boyfriend.

Starnap blushes and smiles, gently wrapping his arms around him.

“Don’t worry baby, none of it is real…”
He whispers in his love’s ear. “And even if it was, I'd laser blast it to bits to protect you.”

Oceanday looks up at him with those black, pearl-like eyes.
“P-promise…?”

Starnap gives him a kiss on the head.
“I promise.”

Oceanday smiles, blushing and burying his face in his chest.
“Thank you, my star…”

They two remain in each other’s arms for the rest of the ride, until the cart rolls back out into the daylight.

“Okay sweetie… you can open your eyes now.”
Starnap says to Oceanday, who was still clinging to him and shaking.

Oceanday slowly opens his eyes.
“A-are the spooky ghosts gone…?”

Starnap gently kisses his head.
“Yep, all gone, cutie.” He says gently. “I scared them away.”

Oceanday sighs in relief.
“Good…” he says.

He gives Starnap a kiss on the underside of his jaw.
“You’re my hero!”

Starnap blushes, smiling warmly.
“And you’re mine, my pearl.”
He says with a purr.

Their sweet moment was interrupted by the blaze voice of the ride worker.

“Um, you have to get off now, sirs.”

They both sit up, looking at the worker.

“Other people wanna ride too.”
They say.

Starnap rolls his eyes.
“Alright fine…”
He says, getting up and helping Oceanday out of the cart.
“Come on love, let’s go on the Ferris wheel.”

Oceanday smiles.
“Okay!”
He says, following Starnap.

~Mini transition~

While waiting in line for the Ferris wheel, Starnap looks to Oceanday, a little nervous.

“So, uh…”
He says, shyly. “How are you enjoying the date so far…?”

Oceanday smiles softly.

“It’s great!”
He says, his tail wagging as he softly reaches out to grab Starnap’s paw.
“I haven’t had this much fun in a while!”

Starnap smiles.
“Good…”
He says softly.

“I-I wanted to do something special, since it’s our 5th year anniversary…”

Oceanday smiles and hugs him.
“Well you’re doing great, my shining star.”

Starnap hums as he hugs him back.

Then, it was time to get on.

The two were guided into a small basket-shaped pod that looked kinda like a boat-shaped gazebo, Starnap sitting next to Oceanday.

“Alright guys, enjoy the ride.”
The carnival worker says as she locks the mini gate.

The two smile at each other as the Ferris wheel starts up, slowly bringing them up from the ground and around and around the wheel.

When they reached the top of the Ferris wheel, the thing stopped so that the patrons at the bottom cart could get off, and more could get on.

Starnap admires the view, gently putting an arm around Oceanday.

“Isn’t it beautiful, my love?”
He says.

Oceanday nods, wrapping an arm around Starnap’s waist and leaning his head on his shoulder.

“Almost as beautiful as the critter in my arms right now.”

Starnap blushes, looking away despite purring.
“Shut up…”

Oceanday giggles, leaning up to kiss him on the cheek.
“Never.”

The two share soft cuddles as they go around the wheel a few more times, admiring the view and each other, before it was time to get off.

Starnap had to restrain himself from bridal-carrying his love off.

Once they were back on the ground, the sun had set and the moon was shining brightly above them.

“So, how are you feeling?”
Starnap asks. “Are you getting tired?”

Oceanday stretches a bit, nodding.
“Yeah, but I think I can do one more ride.”

Starnap smiles softly.
“Okay, which one do you want?”

Oceanday looks around at all the rides they hadn’t been on yet.

There was the carousel, the rollercoasters, the giant swings…
All of them looked fun, but tiring, and he wanted something slow.

Then, he spots it.

Covered with heart shaped pink and red lightbulbs and a large, creepy looking plastic cupid on top, the tunnel of love certainly got Oceanday’s attention.

“Starry! Look!”
He says, gently grabbing Starnap’s arm and pointing towards the ride.

Starnap raises an eyebrow.
“The tunnel of love…?”
He says.

Oceanday nods. “Can we? Please?”

Starnap smirks.
“Why would we need to?” He says. “We already have love.”
He says, punctuating it with a kiss on Oceanday’s cheek.

Oceanday giggles and blushes.
“I knowwww…. But please? Can we anyway?”

He says, giving Starnap those black pearl shiny puppy eyes.

Starnap sighs.
He could never resist those damn puppy eyes.

“Fine…”
He says. “But after that we’re going home.”

“Yay!”
Oceanday says gleefully, giving Starnap a quick hug before dragging him over to the ride, which thankfully had no line since it was getting late.

“You guys are our last riders of the night.”
The park worker says, helping them awkwardly get into the cupid’s arrow shaped boat, complete with pvc cupid wings on the side of it.
“Lucky you.”

Starnap rolls his eyes.

“Alright guys, keep your hands and feet inside the boat at all times, and enjoy the ride.”
The worker says, pressing the button to start the boat going.

Once the ride starts, the boat floats into the darkness.

Inside the tunnel, the ride was wall to wall discount valentine's heart and card decorations, floating cupids and hearts on strings, and posters for cheesy romance movies.

Right now, under the gaudy artificial pink and red lighting, the two felt happy, with their arms wrapped around each other, and Oceanday leaning his head on his lover’s shoulder.

Starnap glances down at his sweetheart.
“So, since we’re in here, I guess we should say some cheesy things?”
He says quietly.

Oceanday giggles. “You first.”

Starnap rolls his eyes. “Fine, let me think of some.”

After thinking for a bit, Starnap gently takes Oceanday’s hands.

“My love…”
He begins, looking deeply into his eyes.

“You are hotter than a solar flare… cooler than the dark side of the moon… sweeter than that funnel cake we just ate… kinder than an angel… and if I ever lost you, well… I don’t know what I would do…”

He leans in to nuzzle his nose.
“And I truly don’t know what I did to become so lucky as to have such a beautiful and sweet merdog become my boyfriend…”

Oceanday was nearly crying with happiness.

“W-well how am I supposed to come up with a response to that…?”
He says.

Starnap giggles.
“Well, actions speak louder than words…”
He says, gesturing to his mouth.

Oceanday blushes, hiding his face in Starnap’s chest.
“You’re such a jerk…”

Starnap nuzzles his forehead.
“Only for you, sweetie…”

Oceanday tilts his head up, moving to kiss Starnap passionately on the lips.

The moment was magical, tasting of stardust and the sweet funnel cake they’d eaten earlier, wrapped in each other’s warm arms.

The two lovers happily made out, not knowing that the boat had floated out of the tunnel by that point.

“Uh, guys?”
The ride operator says. “Ride’s over.”

Starnap and Oceanday pull back, red-faced and ashamed.

“S-sorry!”
Oceanday says, giggling nervously while Starnap buries his red face in his chest.
“We kinda got caught up in the moment.”

“Yeah yeah.”
The operator says. “Get out of here, lovebirds.”

After the two awkwardly get out of the boat, Oceanday yawns.

Starnap giggles.
“You all tuckered out?”

Oceanday nods, leaning his head on Starnap’s shoulder.
“This night really wore me out.”

Starnap gives him a gentle side hug, before taking his hand and starting to lead him away.

But Oceanday didn’t move.

“Uh… you okay?”
Starnap asks.

Oceanday leans his body against him, yawning again.

“Carry me?”
He says, looking up at Starnap with his black pearl puppy eyes.

Starnap sighs softly.
“Fine…”
He says, leaning town to pick him up in a bridal carry, starting to walk off.

While Starnap walked back through the entry arch, Oceanday smiles and wraps his arms around his neck.

“Thanks for the wonderful date, my shining star…”
He says, giving him a little kiss on the cheek.

Starnap smiles, purring softly.
“You’re welcome, my precious pearl.” He says. “Happy anniversary.”

Oceanday smiles as he starts to fall asleep in his sweet alien’s arms.

“Best anniversary ever.”
