Work Text:
1. I wanted to draw something to help me visualize cyborg Tech as he appears in my story. It’s not intended to be a specific, thought-out character design, but rather an impression. I wasn’t sure how to translate the 3D animation style to a drawing style I’m comfortable in, so I went with something semi-realistic and like the pencil drawings I used to do as a kid.
2. I like drawing faces more than anything, so of course I had to draw his eyes uncovered. I have an… artistic fascination with Tech’s eyes and have spent quite a while trying to imagine what his face looks like without any obstructions. I wanted to save this picture for a particular point in the plot of Falling Forward, but figured I should just draw a new one if I want to insert a picture there. Besides, I don’t think someone reading a text-only story particularly cares about visuals anyway. I love visuals, but when I’m reading a text-only story, I really don’t care to connect any visuals to it, no matter how good the art is.
But I’m not good at coloring in a style like that, so…
3. Now he’s in a style I’m more comfortable coloring in. I tried to capture the slightly-narrow-eyed glancing look that he often has in the show.
4. Since I’ve been writing the defectives as little kids, I drew Tech as a little kid. If you look closely, you can tell he's a menace. I think it’d be cute if his hair color shifted a bit over time.
5. This is meant to be the “owlet” cadet Tech described in Horseshoecrabmom1’s “How Crosshair Met Tech” – I tried to emphasize the owlishness with the magnified eyes, yellowish eye color and lens color, white frames, slightly shifted hair color, and even a hint of little owl ear tufts in the hair.
