The First Choice

Summary:

In the shadowy corners of the HoloNet which gave birth to the First Order, a chilling rhetoric spreads.

Notes:

Fragments of a transmission—origin unknown, timestamp corrupted—circulate in encrypted channels once used by disillusioned senators, rogue admirals, and those who felt abandoned by the dying embers of the Republic.

Most dismiss it as fabrication.

A relic of a bygone war.

Others… listen.

Work Text:

Evil.

A wonderfully simplistic word, is it not?

So readily spoken… and so poorly understood.

Tell me—when you condemn a man as evil, do you do so out of conviction…

…or conditioning?

You have inherited a galaxy that prides itself on clarity.

Light and dark.

Jedi and Sith.

Good and evil.

Such neat divisions.

Such comforting lies.

The notion of good and evil is not truth.

It is architecture.

Carefully constructed… patiently reinforced… and zealously defended by those who benefit from its existence.

Allow me, then, to offer you a story.

An old one.

From a world that predates even the Republic.

There was once a man who lived in paradise.

Adam.

He knew no hunger. No suffering. No want.

And yet… he was incomplete.

So his god, in its generosity, gave him a companion.

Eve.

Together, they lived in harmony.

Perfect.

Unquestioning.

There was but one command.

One boundary that must never be crossed.

And at its centre…

Temptation.

You have been told this story before.

You have been told of a serpent.

A deceiver.

A corrupter.

You have been told that what followed was a fall.

But I ask you…

What kind of creator grants will… only to forbid its use?

What kind of paradise demands ignorance to sustain itself?

No.

This was not corruption.

It was awakening.

For the first time… they chose.

And for that, they were punished.

Not for evil.

But for defiance.

Consider the lesson.

Not the one you were told to learn…

But the one that remains.

Obedience is rewarded.

Autonomy is condemned.

This is the foundation of your morality.

And now… you understand why you fear us.

There exists a code.

One you have been taught to revile.

Listen.

Peace is a lie. There is only Passion.

Through Passion, I gain Strength.

Through Strength, I gain Power.

Through Power, I gain Victory.

Through Victory, my chains are Broken.

The Force shall free me.

You hear tyranny in these words.

Because you have been taught to.

But look closer.

It does not command you to rule.

It does not demand subjugation.

It demands only that you become.

Passion… is the rejection of numb obedience.

Strength… is the courage to act.

Power… is the reclamation of the self.

And freedom…

Freedom is the refusal to accept the chains you were born into.

The Jedi preach peace.

Yet enforce conformity.

The Republic proclaims liberty.

Yet thrives on quiet control.

And you…

You call that good.

How curious.

You call us evil.

Because we do not kneel.

Because we do not pretend.

Because we refuse to sanctify our own submission.

But ask yourself…

If a system defines virtue as obedience…

Then what, truly, is rebellion?

Evil?

…or the first act of freedom?
