Chapter 1: the only reason

Chapter Text

Michael couldn’t believe what he was feeling.
He never thought that, sooner or later, his feelings would get the better of him; he’d known for months that he felt a certain attraction to Luke, but he hadn’t realized just how much this might affect his whole life.

Right now, he was in his room, lying on the floor, wondering how he could erase from his memory what he’d seen that morning at school. Seeing Luke kissing that girl had made him feel sick, so much so that he hadn’t even managed to go into the building.

He marched right back at home whit teary eyes, whit his heart shattered. He opened his notebook and started writing; it was something he often did when he was in pain emotionally or physically.

Don't talk, let me think it over
How we gonna fix this?
How we gonna undo all the pain?
Tell me, is it even worth it?
Looking for a straight line
Taking back the time we can't replace

All the crossed wires,
Just making us tired
Is it too late to bring us back to life?

When I close my eyes and try to sleep
I fall apart, I find it hard to breathe
You're the reason, the only reason
Even though my dizzy head is numb,
I swear my heart is never giving up
You're the reason, the only reason

I feel you burning under my skin
I swear I see you shining
Brighter than the flame inside your eyes

Bitter words spoken,
Everything broken
It's never too late to bring us back to life

When I close my eyes and try to sleep
I fall apart, I find it hard to breathe
You're the reason, the only reason
Even though my dizzy head is numb,
I swear my heart is never giving up
You're the reason, the only reason

Oh, oh, oh, only reason, the only reason
Oh, oh, oh, only reason, the only reason

Don't talk, let me think it over
How we gonna fix this?
How we gonna undo all the pain?

When I close my eyes and try to sleep
I fall apart, I find it hard to breathe
You're the reason, the only reason
Even though my dizzy head is numb,
I swear my heart is never giving up
You're the reason, the only reason

When I close my eyes and try to sleep
I fall apart, I find it hard to breathe
You're the reason, the only reason
Even though my dizzy head is numb,
I swear my heart is never giving up
You're the reason, the only reason

His eyes had only been teary when he walked into his house; now he was sobbing uncontrollably, clutching his chest and struggling to breathe. He was lying on the ground, in his head only the thought that Luke could never love someone like him; he was too sensitive, too broken, Michael was too much even as a friend.

When Calum walked into Michael’s room, he was shocked by the state of the place and especially by the state his best friend was in.
He crouched down beside him, calling his name softly; he lifted Michael’s head, resting it against his legs.

“What happened, Mike?” Calum asked, almost in a whisper. Michael shook his head, clinging to Calum almost desperately.
“Is this about Luke?” the Māori asked, already knowing the answer; when Michael nodded Calum sighed.

The next day Michael skipped the first lesson, going straight in the music classroom to meet up whit Calum and Luke. He sat down and picked up his guitar, which had been leaning against the classroom wall.
He didn’t look Luke in the eyes, he didn’t have the courage to; Michael tuned his instrument before trying out a few chords. The boy whit teal strands in his hair did his best to get through the class without losing his mind; the girl who had been kissing Luke yesterday was now clinging to him, giggling annoyingly as she stroked his arm.

When finally the class ended Michael run through the door, without waiting for Calum nor Luke. He needed to get out of there.
