Work Text:
Pomni was laying in her bed, lost in thought. She was happy Caine had given her a way to turn off the lights so she could think more clearly. Had she done something wrong earlier? She couldn’t have let herself accept Jax’s attempts to push her away, but could she have done it better somehow?
Maybe she shouldn’t have bit him, in hindsight. Or scratched at him. That couldn’t have felt good. She sighed. She rolled on her side and let herself cry for a few minutes. I just want to be closer to him, she thought. Why won’t he accept that?
She rolled again onto her back and took a deep breath. She needed to check up on him, talk to him, see him, anything. She prepared to push herself out of bed and walk across the hall to Jax’s room-
A knock on her door. “Pomni?” Jax’s voice asked, quietly. She didn’t mind him seeing her like this. She got up and opened her door, intending to open it slowly, but Jax bolted through as soon as the door cracked. He hid his face in her chest and started to mumble inaudibly, though Pomni could hear the tears in his mumbles.
“I can’t hear you, silly,” Pomni said through her own tears.
Jax tilted his head down, allowing his words to escape her chest while still buried deep in it. “PomPom, I’m sorry. It’s- it’s hard,” he chuckled anxiously before talking a bit more clearly. “It’s been hard for me to get close to people. Ever since Ribbit-”
Pomni hugged him as tightly as she could without fear of hurting him. Words escaped her. She tried to form a sentence in her mind, but nothing came. She started to sink lower to the ground, hoping Jax would follow, and smiled when he did. He collapsed into her with his full body weight as she readjusted to hold him close in this new position.
Words finally made their way to Pomni’s head. “I shouldn’t have bit you. Or scratched you. I just didn’t want you to push me away and that’s… what came to mind.”
Jax laughed. “That did kind of hurt, PomPom.” She stayed quiet, feeling bad. “But,” he said, speaking seriously. “I needed that wakeup call. Pushing you away was kind of… instinct.”
“Just, please, don’t do it again. I care about you, you know,” Pomni said while grinning.
“Hmph,” Jax muttered. Silence fell over the two for a few seconds as they took in the moment. “Can we… stay like this for a while?”
Pomni smiled.
“Of course.”
