Work Text:
The club had been fun. Fun, loud, colourful, bright, warm and so so full of people. It had been a good night for Vinyl Scratch. Even though they were by now an established DJ in the scene it still excited him every time so many people came to have fun with his music mixes.
Fondly smiling to themselves, she walked the short way from the train station to their house. Even though the memory of this evening brought a smile to his face, she was relieved to not be blasted with music anymore. The DJ after them had turned the music up to a deafening level and even though Vinyl usually liked loud music she would’ve also liked to keep her ability to hear. Now that their headphones were off and the cold night air embraced his face, she listened to the nightly animals instead and was promptly inspired to go sound hunting again.
Not tonight though. The train ride from Canterlot had been exhausting and Vinyl wanted nothing more than to get home and snuggle up to Octavia in bed. Speaking of Octavia. Was that the sound of a Cello or did their ears deceive them?
The faint melody got louder as they got closer to their destination and was now unmistakably coming out of their house. Warm light poured out into the black night.
The look at this, the thought that this was their home, his and Octavias, made the corners of their lips curl upwards slightly.
They felt themselves moving ever so quietly as not to tear Octavia out of her focus. The door thankfully clicked into place without making much of a noise. Vinyl creeped up to the studio door, which was left slightly open, and rested his tired shoulder on the doorframe. They took some time to breathe in the beauty of their girlfriend. Her long black hair draped like a curtain over her shoulders, obscuring her averted face. The hills of her shoulders, swaying up and down as she moved her delicate hands to send out beautiful melodies into the night. Then he closed his eyes and just listened intently to her playing.
When Octavia finished the song, she turned on the studio stool slowly, as if still deep in thought about the music she just created. She looked up and blinked, startled, snapping out of her trance. Her head darting toward the clock, as if to check if her partner, suddenly standing smiling in the doorframe, was not an illusion.
“Oh” is everything Octavia managed to say. Confusedly her eyes searched the floor before she caught her composure again and looked up at her partner, who was watching this play out amusedly.
“I didn’t realise it was that late already”, Octavia admitted. She looked guilty. Vinyl thought it was cute though and their smile widened again. He regarded Octavia softly and chose to greet her first, so they held up their hand and wriggled her ringed fingers.
“Oh yea sorry, hi darling” Now Octavia finally smiled a bright smile too. She stood up and went to kiss Vinyl. Just a soft peck on the lips. Vinyl had already opened her arms to wrap Octavia in a tight hug. The couple stayed close, lingering in each others warmth. Vinyl had been missing that, even though they had only been apart for two days.
Octavia pulled away a little again, just enough to speak comfortably. She looked slightly embarrassed muttering “I wanted to stay up to surprise you, when you come back and thought I might as well practice a bit and then… completely lost track of the time.” She exhaled. Clearly the exhaustion was now catching up to her. Vinyl rubbed her head into Octavias hair to signal her not to feel bad about it, also she just really wanted to snuggle. Octavia chuckled.
Remembering his preparation in the train, Vinyl pulled out the card to show Octavia. Written
on it was: “I missed you so so much! Any idea to make up for the time apart?” He held
it up for their girlfriend to see and winked at her when she had finished reading,
to complete the message of the handwritten piece of paper.
Writing out what they wanted to say, had always been Vinyls favourite form of AAC. It felt so much more personal to her than using technical devices. And adorned with little doodles the handwritten messages could be so much more versatile and expressive. For this reason there were paper notes and pencils strewn all about the house. Vinyl still made sure to always carry their own little pad and pencil though. Today she had missed Octavia exceptionally so he had already prepared a message for her in advance.
Octavia was taken aback at first, raising her eyebrows in surprise to see her partner so forward, but then she smirked. “Oh yes I have the perfect idea to make up for it”
Playfully smiling, she pulled Vinyl down by the collar of her shirt into a fierce kiss.
Both seemed to pour the longing of a lifetime into the kiss, lips crashing together like waves on the stormy sea. Soft but strong Octavia pushed into the kiss and Vinyl happily let her lead.
Vinyls hand, previously laying on his girlfriend’s cheek, had now moved into her silky hair. Octavia’s familiar vanilla scent surrounded them both and made Vinyls senses tingle.
They ended up breathless as they parted. Breathless, but infinitely content to be back in each others arms. Octavia giggled and Vinyl pulled away a bit to give her a questioning look. Her partners ruffled hair made the girl laugh even harder though. Vinyl blinked twice at her, still confused. “Nothing really, just.. haha.. I can’t believe it’s almost one in the morning and we’re still here in the studio, kissing like crazy” This made her partner snort too.
Octavia caught Vinyls eyes and with deep regard told her “I missed you too, you know?”
Vinyl smiled and nodded, then placed the last kiss on Octavia’s soft lips and pulled out of the hug. He gestured with his head as if to say “Let’s go upstairs”
Upstairs Vinyl changed into their wide, blue pyjama pants and shirt and tied her hair up in a loose bun. In the mirror they could see their roots already fading, dark hair coming through again. When Octavia entered the bathroom they showed her and she agreed to help recolour it soon.
Vinyl pointed at her girlfriend and made a sweeping gesture over their face, saying the words with it soundlessly: “You are so beautiful” It was one of the few ASL signs he knew to make but he used it almost every day to tell his girlfriend how beautiful she was. They had used it so often, that by now sometimes Octavia was signing it to her too.
Today Octavia was wearing a cute dark pink top adorned with lace and a black ribbon pattern on it to bed. She really looked majestic in everything, Vinyl thought fondly. Octavia could read him like a book so she had to smile too. She braided her black hair and tucked the loose bangs away with barrettes before joining her partner in brushing their teeth.
Vinyl was already finished when Octavia took another 8 minutes to complete her full skin care routine and they collapsed exhaustedly onto the bed. Finally the bathroom light switched off and she came to bed. Vinyl, already half asleep, blinked at her through heavy lids, while she crawled under the warm covers and snuggled up closer to her partner. Vinyl laid their head just above Octavias chest, using her like a pillow. Octavia in return drew circles all over his back. Just when she felt Vinyl slipping away into sleep she said
“I love you, Sleep well”
Vinyl incomprehensibly mumbled her answer but Octavia knew what it meant
“I love you too”
