Brother's Best Friend - Iwaizumi Hajime x Reader

Summary:

“Well, yeah. He’s very fake to me. He went from absolutely egotistical to a good teammate in a few months. It’s so… unnatural, you know?”

Oikawa and Iwaizumi glanced at each other. Y/n hated Kageyama in junior high, almost as much as Oikawa did. If the twins had anything in common, it was that they often saw others who were better than them as enemies. The only thing different was that Y/n actually became better than Kageyama (In terms of skills/accuracy).

That’s probably why. It must feel weird to see someone who used to be better than you have their downfall, but suddenly recover. She must hate that.

“Plus,” Y/n continued, taking a sip of her drink and swirling it around. “That little shrimp is annoying. You wouldn’t expect him to be that good, then they come up with that quick. And Tobio swallowing his pride to match someone else? Unheard of.”

***After Oikawa’s practice- Y/n POV***

Y/n splashed her face with water in the girls’ bathroom. She was exhausted because the girl’s volleyball practice was much longer than usual. She checked her notifications and saw that her twin, Toru Oikawa, called her 15 times and spam texted her in a span of 7 minutes. She rolled her eyes and put it down, not even bothering to turn off Do Not Disturb.

He’s so extra.

She dried her hands and face and checked her phone again. This time, she received a new notification.

Iwaizumi: Hey where are you? Your brother is driving me nuts

Y/n: I would come but im not ready to suffer

Iwaizumi: Ha ha. How much longer?

Y/n: I am leaving the school right now, hold on. Good lord you two are so impatient.

She put her phone in her shorts pocket and left the building. Y/n, Toru, and Iwaizumi would be walking home together. Iwa’s staying the night.

They were all best friends for years. Even though they were all the same age, sometimes it felt like Y/n and Iwa were babysitting Oikawa. Toru could be very childish sometimes. Her brother would act even weirder when it was just Y/n and Iwa hanging out. But most of the time, they were all together, playing volleyball, studying, or doing homework.

She heard them before she actually saw them. More specifically, she heard Toru. She waved at them, and Iwa waved back. As she approached them, Y/n held up her phone to Toru’s face and scrolled through her notifications.

“Seriously?” She looked at him sternly.

“You can’t blame me,” her twin whined. “You took so long!”

Iwa turned to him, exasperated. “It was 10 minutes. I fail to see the problem here.”

“Let’s go, Haji,” Y/n sighed. “I’m so tired. I just wanna go home.”

They walked away with Toru following behind them. “How come you act like he’s your brother all the time?” Toru pouted.

“I don’t act like he’s my brother, I just treat him like a responsible, mature person. Which you are not.”

After a few minutes of bickering, they finally arrived at their house. Y/n went straight to the bathroom to take a shower, with Toru and Iwaizumi sitting in the living room, watching their latest game. It was their routine to do this, followed with dinner and homework.

***After dinner- Iwaizumi POV***

The three of them sat on the floor of Y/n’s bedroom, with their assignments sprawled out. Since Y/n and Iwa had most of their classes together, they decided to partner up for all of their projects. There were only a handful of classes that the twins and Iwaizumi shared, in which they were usually a group of three. But of course, it was always Y/n and Iwa who did the work. Most of the time, Toru was fixing his hair or talking to the girls who asked for his autograph or a picture.

“Aren’t you gonna do anything?” His sister asked, annoyed.

“Nope, I’ll do it later.”

“Oi,” Iwaizumi glared at him. “You have to contribute or else I’ll make practice hell for you tomorrow morning!”

“Sorry Iwa-chan,” Toru picked up a pencil. “What do you want me to do?”

Y/n paused, then looked at Iwaizumi. “Mind if he shares your work? Mine isn’t really a partner effort.”

“Sure.”

Iwaizumi told Oikawa what to do, then sat back for a moment while Oikawa was working. His eyes fell on Y/n for a moment, and he couldn’t help but stare. He admired the way her long, brown hair fell over her face as she leaned towards the paper. Her hazel eyes scanned her work, checking for mistakes. Even though Oikawa and Y/n look very similar, somehow, Iwa felt Y/n was much better looking. Or maybe he was just biased.

Suddenly, Y/n yawned. “You must be tired,” Iwa said. “How about we just chill for now and finish this tomorrow?”

She nodded. “Sounds great. I’ll stay up a bit more, then I’ll go to bed. Tomorrow’s gonna be a long day.”

Oikawa raised an eyebrow. “Why’s that? I thought you didn’t have practice tomorrow.”

She shook her head. “I don’t. I’m meeting up with Tobio again.”

Iwaizumi’s face fell, but he didn’t let Y/n see. “For what?”

“Just for volleyball practice. He wanted a few tips on setting and stuff. When he couldn’t get the best male volleyball player in the prefecture, he came to me.”

“Good, because I’m never gonna teach anything to that little-”

Y/n stuck her tongue out at him. “Who said you’re the best? It’s obviously Ushijima. I guess you could barely make Best Setter, but I think even that goes to Kageyama now.”

At this point, Oikawa was fuming. “Nobody can even hit that tyrant’s so-called ‘royal sets’! What do you mean he is the best?”

“He has more talent. Alone, he’s the best,” she said. “But you don’t play volleyball alone. So I guess it’s pretty much useless. I still have to help him, though. He wouldn’t stop bugging me.”

Toru stared at her for a moment, then rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Who’s side are you on anyway?”

“Haji’s of course,” Y/n rolled her eyes as well. “I don’t care about you or Tobio.”

Iwa smiled. Then, she stood up, crawled onto her bed, and started scrolling on her phone. Oikawa and Iwa looked at each other and then cleaned up the papers. Oikawa plugged his gaming console into his sister’s TV and handed a controller to his friend.

A few minutes later, Iwaizumi tossed his controller to the floor. “This game is so annoying!”

“Watch and learn, Iwa-chan,” Oikawa smirked. Iwaizumi rolled his eyes and glanced at Y/n, who was lying on her stomach. He climbed onto her bed, facedown, and closed his eyes.

“Beach Weather?” Y/n asked.

“Yes please,” Iwa responded, his voice muffled through the blankets.

She quietly played their favorite song, still scrolling on her phone. Iwaizumi closed his eyes, enjoying the warmth of her next to him. Y/n softly sang along.

“Hajime,” Y/n poked his head lightly.

“Yeah?” He lifted his head, and she turned her phone to him.

On her screen was a picture of two small hands with their pinkies intertwined. She zoomed out and showed him the full picture.

It was Y/n and Iwa when they were younger. They were giggling and looking at each other. Iwa stared at the picture with a gentle smile.

“Where did you get that from?”

“My mom sent it to me a few months ago. I kept it as my wallpaper.”

“Send it to me.”

Y/n and Iwaizumi sent each other photos while Oikawa played video games. About an hour later, Oikawa noticed that they were both quiet.

“Wanna play another game?” he asked. When he heard no reply, he peeked at the bed. Both of them were asleep. He stared at them with a troubled expression. “She’s off-limits for you, Iwa-chan,” he whispered. He closed the blinds, slowly tiptoed out of the bedroom, turned off the lights, and quietly closed the door behind him. Oikawa sighed and went to his room to sleep.
