Work Text:
“Whatcha got for me, smoke show?” You ask as Jack accompanies his patient to your floor.
He snorts at the nickname you give him, “McKayla, age nine. Fell down the stairs while trying to get a glass of water for her little brother. Had stitches and a minor concussion.”
You softly smile at the girl, “Hi, McKayla. I’m Doctor L/N. How’re you feeling?”
“Sleepy,” she murmurs, trying her best to stay awake.
“You’ll be able to sleep soon,” you direct one of your nurses to a room down the hall.
You turn back to Jack with a smirk, “Busy down there?”
“Always…seems quiet up here though.”
You slap his arm, “Don’t jinx it!”
He chuckles, “Okay. Okay! I take it back!” He gives a quick kiss to your cheek, “See you in six hours.”
“Bye. Love you.”
“Love you!” He gives you a cute wave as the elevator door closes and it has you giggling.
You can tell this particular shift was rough for Jack. You see how he’s limping, favoring one leg more than the other. His shoulders sagging.
When you reach the truck, you take his keys, “I’ll drive.”
He doesn’t even fight you as he climbs into the passenger seat.
When you get home, he immediately sits in the chair you placed by the front door for him. You watch as he unlaces his shoe, setting it to the side where your other shoes rest. He decides to take off his prosthetic now. His leg already hurting too much. You grab his crutches, having them ready for him.
“Thanks, baby,” he murmurs with a grunt as he stands with the crutches. You follow him to the shared bedroom where you help take off his scrubs and toss them into the hamper. Your own scrubs follow.
The click of the crutches moves from the bedroom to the bathroom. You turn on the shower and place Jack’s shower chair inside.
When the water is hot enough, you both step in. You stop Jack from grabbing his shampoo, “Lemme do it.”
“You sure?” He asks, looking over his shoulder.
“I’m sure, baby.” You lather your hands with his shampoo and proceed to massage his head. He groans as your nails scrape his scalp. Easing any tension that was stored up there.
Using the detachable shower head, you wash away the shampoo and move to grab Jack’s loofah and your body wash.
You lather the loofah up and the begin to scrub at Jack’s body. You work his upper torso, also trying to massage out the stress he’s collected during the night.
“Shit, right there,” he moans as your knuckles dig into his shoulder.
As the water washes away the soap, you give him the loofah, think you can get your bottom half while I wash up?”
Jack silently takes the loofah from you and cleans the rest of him up. After he’s done with the detachable shower head, he switches it to the one above for you.
You move to stand under it and Jack just watches you. Not in a creepy, sexual way. But more…reverent.
You splash his face with water, “You got some drool there, Doc.”
He smirks, “A guy can’t admire his beautiful partner?”
You quickly finish up showering before turning off the water. You exit first, wrapping yourself in a towel before giving Jack his towel. He dries off his upper half before standing. You help wrap the towel around his waist before he steps out. He grabs his crutches and heads to the sink.
You proceed with your skin care routine, sliding your moisturizer to Jack. He takes some and applies it to his face.
When you’re both done, you go to the bedroom to change. You in a tshirt and shorts. Jack in sweatpants.
“Hungry? I can whip something up real quick?”
“I think we still have some of those frozen breakfast bowls you made.”
“Oh yeah! We need to make more of those. They’ve really come in handy. You want me to heat one up for you?”
“I’m not super hungry. We can share.”
“Alrighty. You gonna stay here?”
“Yeah. I’m beat,” he says as he starts to settle into bed.
You hum, “Okay. Be right back.”
In five minutes, you return with a breakfast bowl and a glass of water.
You hand Jack the bowl, letting him get his fill in before you do. You scroll through your phone as he eats.
“Oh! I got the invite for Ben’s wedding!” You show him the email for your cousin’s upcoming nuptials, “I’ll reserve our spots now.”
“I’m surprised it took him that long to propose to Gabe. They’ve been together longer than we have.” He holds out the bowl to you.
“I know! But it’s fine. I’m just happy they’re finally getting married.” You place your phone down and accept the dish. You chuckle, “You weren’t really hungry, huh?” You ask eyeing the half-eaten breakfast bowl.
He shrugs, “More than I realized I guess. Sorry.”
“It’s fine. I’ll make some toast too. You gonna sleep now?”
“Yeah, think so.”
“M’kay,” you peck his lips, “Sleep tight. Love you.”
“Love you,” he mumbles as he lays down.
You turn off the lights for him and shut the door.
When Jack wakes, it’s around 1pm. He usually doesn’t sleep for very long.
He looks over to your side and it’s empty, untouched. You never came to bed.
Jack gets up and grabs his crutches, going to the bathroom to relieve himself. After washing his hands and washing the sleep from his face, he exits the room and sees the tv on at a low volume.
“Honey?” He calls out for you. The clicking of the crutches fills the room as he makes his way towards the couch.
You’re curled up in a ball, fast asleep, mouth open and a little bit of drool dripping down the corner of your mouth.
Jack chuckles and leaves you there to sleep. Your alarm will be going off in an hour or two.
And when that does happen, Jack already has lunch for you.
You stretch and rise from the couch when Jack enters the house. You look at him in confusion, “Where’d you go?”
“Grocery shopping and bought us lunch.”
“Oh. You should’ve woke me up. I would’ve gone with you.” You say as you follow him to the kitchen, the smell of burgers wafting through your nose.
Jack shrugs, “You needed the rest,” he reaches in and grabs a fry, holding it out to you. You happily accept it, “I got you a double cheese this time.”
You clap in excitement, “Yes! Thank you, honey!”
You and Jack work on putting the groceries away while also eating fries.
Once the groceries are put away, you two sit at the dining table, grubbing on your hamburgers and fries.
You both scroll through your phones in between each bite, occasionally showing something to one another that comes across your feeds.
You look up from your phone and watch Jack. He’s munching on a fry as he reads something. His eyes skimming the words on his screen. The tension from his shift had been washed away and now leaves a more relaxed Jack Abbot.
He looks up and softly smiles, “What?”
“I love you so much, you know that?”
His smile grows wider, “I fucking hope so or else marrying you would’ve been a big mistake.”
You throw your head back in a cackle and then poke his cheek.
You love this man so fucking much. You feel so lucky you have him to go home to after the chaos of work.
And he feels the same. If not, more.
