Chapter Text
Squiddo was rustling through her chests, trying to find anything that could help her with the adventure she was about to go on with Wifies. They had formerly made a plan to explore a horror mod filled with horrifying entities, and she didn’t just want to go in there blind and unprepared like she usually was.
As she was searching for more food, Wifies snuck up behind her, grabbing her shoulders.
“Wifies! Don’t do that! This is not the time, I’m already scared.” Squiddo exclaimed as she turned around quickly, facing Wifies with a sad expression on her face. He came beside her to look through the chest as well, already having most of his gear.
“Sorry sorry, that’s my bad. I think that this will be fun, do you have your camcorder ready?” He asked as he grabbed out an iron ax, swinging it around in the air before looking back to Squiddo. She threw her backpack in front of her, not remembering if she had grabbed it from her enderchest.
“Freak, I forgot it. You have an enderchest?” She zipped back up her backpack as Wifies searched through his inventory, interface appearing in front of him. He pulled one out and set it down, Squiddo quickly opening it. “There we go! Okay, are you ready?” Squiddo smiled, turning on her camcorder.
“Absolutely not, but let’s go. Parrot is expecting me to get back in a few hours.” Wifies grinned, walking towards the entrance door to leave. Squiddo hesitated for a moment at the mention of Parrot, he never stopped talking about him. Whatever, Squiddo couldn’t dwell on that, she didn’t even care anyway.
She threw him a smile as she skipped towards the exit with him. They quickly got a move on, opening their menus to transport to the modded world.
After a few hours, both Squiddo and Wifies were collectively worn out and rightfully horrified after that experience. They both transported back to their main world together, Squiddo running into her house and plopping herself down on her bed. It was orange, of course, and had one of those princess curtains along the frame of it.
Wifies slumped onto the floor next to her bed, slamming his head against the wall. He was worn out, and was definitely not expecting what they just went through. Maybe he really can’t fully prepare for their recording sessions.
“Squiddo, that was one of the worst experiences of my life,” Wifies mumbled out while he shut his eyes, “but I really gotta get back to Parrot. He’s been waiting well over the hour he was meant to.” Squiddo immediately sat up, head whipping to turn to him. She didn’t want him to leave yet.
“Seriously? After all of that, you’re just gonna like.. Leave? I mean like, we could be hanging out for longer. Just, chilling and discussing what just happened. And we can review the footage and-” Squiddo kept rambling on, fingers digging into her thighs as she got a little heated. Wifies just looked at her with a confused expression.
“Er- I mean, Squiddo I’m sorry but we’ve never really kept hanging out after a recording session is over. If you really want me to stay, I can hit up Parrot, tell him I’ll come home later.” Wifies stands up, opening up his intercom and looking at Squiddo expectantly. She just nodded, standing up to sort out her backpack as Wifies texted him.
“He isn’t gonna reply, let me call him real quick.” As Wifies was calling Parrot, he stepped out of the house for a moment. Squiddo got a little nervous, she didn’t understand why she was suddenly acting like this. She just wanted to be around Wifies a little longer, that isn’t weird.
But, her behaviour was the weird part. Sure, it’d been happening for a while, but not to this degree. She tried to brush it off, emptying out her backpack into the respective labelled chests that were lined up on the wall. She had her whole house nicely decorated, orange curtains covered in embroidered yellow flowers. Her carpet was mixed between purple and orange, by request of Ash. There were paintings adorning her walls, alongside cute wall decor she had been gifted from Jumper.
It was cozy, alongside the fairy lights lined up on the top of her ceiling, she loved it here. But the more she looked at the purple mixed in alongside her usual green and orange, she replaced the thought of Ash with the thought of Wifies. Why did they have to have the same main colour?
Squiddo gulped, slamming the chest closed as she threw her backpack on top of it. She had made sure to grab her camcorder, she would upload the footage to her computer later. For now, she tried to block out any unwanted thoughts as Wifies walked back into the room, intercom closed.
“Alright, Parrot’s okay with me coming home later.” Wifies plopped down on Squiddo’s bed, leaning back and stretching. His joints were sore, and he was tired after everything. Squiddo came back to the bed, sitting down next to him as she reviewed the footage on her camcorder.
“Thanks for staying, this footage is gonna be really good for a video,” Squiddo turned the camcorder to him, pushing it into his face. “This looks so much more scary with this quality, I’m glad we switched to this.” She pulled it back to her as Wifies sat up, leaning back on his hands.
“That actually looks horrifying, sort of reminds me of backrooms found footage.” Wifies kept watching the footage play out from over Squiddo’s shoulder. It was going to make for a perfect video, he was excited to watch the full edited footage. “Do you want me to help you edit?” He offered, Squiddo considered for a second.
“You don’t have to, but I’td be cool to have you help edit. Wifies twist on the vid, people will like that.” She set down the camcorder on her bedside table, letting out a deep exhale as he leaned back, staring up at the fairy lights lining her ceiling.
“Dude, people will one hundred percent love that. The fans yearn for more “scaredy cat duo” content.” Wifies laughed a little, Squiddo following along. The duo name was perfect for them, considering that horror mods were all they went through, and it was horrible. “I can’t believe that’s what we got labeled!” She giggled to herself, removing the bows in her hair and setting them down.
Wifies followed her, taking off his bandana as it put pressure on his head, making his current headache much worse than it had to be. He also slipped off his ying-yang sweater, leaving just his white undershirt on. Squiddo took off her orange jumper as well.
“We really need to prepare better for these recording sessions, they’re stressful!” Squiddo whined out, laying back, her head hitting her duvet harshly. Wifies laughed as he laid back with her. “I say that every time but you never do! The bandana is getting hard to keep on nowadays, it constricts my head.” He complained as he opened up his intercom to check if anyone had messaged him.
“I try to prepare but it never works! We need to do a little more research on what we’re getting ourselves into next time.” Squiddo opened her intercom as well, noticing that Ash had messaged her, but she just didn’t feel compelled to open it. She shut it down as soon as she opened it.
“Yeah but that takes the fun of it away, the viewers want us scared, we can’t be as scared if we have a whole rundown of the mod.” Wifies commented as Squiddo watched him type something to Parrot. She winced, something in her stomach twisting. This was their time, not Wifies and Parrot time.
“Do you like Parrot?” Squiddo abruptly asked, jealousy settling in her mind, turning to look away from Wifies as soon as she spoke.
“Uh. What does that mean?”
“Like, do you like him?”
“Why do you ask?”
“You’re always messaging him, like no matter what we’re doing it’s always Parrot.” She couldn’t stop the snarky mix to her tone, it simply slipped out.
“I mean, I wouldn’t say I like him like that. He’s just a best friend, roommates. You know?” Wifies picked at his fingers as a wave of nervousness washed over him. He didn’t like Parrot, why was he even nervous in the first place?
“Right.”
“Do you like Ash?”
“I- Don’t throw it back on me!” Squiddo exclaimed, a mix of anger twisting in her stomach. She quickly sat up and got off the bed, going over to her computer set up which was right next to her bed, nicely decorated just like the rest of her room.
“Just asking! Ash is like the center of your world, if you get to ask about me and Parrot, I think it’s fair for me to ask about you and Ash.” Wifies sat up to watch as Squiddo went to upload the camcorder files to her computer, an uncomfortable silence following his sentence.
He didn’t immediately try to start a conversation, instead just taking a moment to watch her work. She was concentrating on her computer, hooking up the camcorder to it. With their prior conversation, Wifies started to take note of things he usually wouldn’t.
The way her bangs fall over her forehead, the way it curls onto the sides of her face, the shade of lipstick she uses to contrast her skin tone, the way her white shirt was just slightly too big for her, falling over the side of her shoulder the tiniest bit. It was weird, Wifies thought. All the intricate details of a person he usually doesn’t notice.
The last thing he notes is just how pretty she is. But he throws that thought out as fast as it comes.
Squiddo keeps clacking away at her keyboard, seemingly forgetting that Wifies was in the room, he was worried that he might have irritated her. He didn’t know why but you never know how someone could get upset.
Suddenly, Squiddo lit up a bit, a weight seemingly lifted off her chest. She turned her spinning chair back around to Wifies.
“I’m sorry that was a little rude.” She spoke quieter, an apologetic look spreading across her face. Wifies just smiled, feet dangling off the edge of her bed. He watched as she tapped a finger on the arm rest of her chair, the way she tilted her head just barely, as her eyes darted to like twenty different places at once.
“It’s alright, you seem stressed. Anything up?” He ran his fingers through his hair, letting his middle part bangs messily fall back down over his eyes. Squiddo opened her intercom to quickly link up to her bluetooth speaker, turning on some random lo-fi beats she had saved in her playlist, turning them down a long way. It helped her relax a bit.
“Just emotions stuff, it’s not that serious. I guess I’m just a little stressed from the mod.” She deducts that that has to be the case, even as she looks at Wifies and notices his softer jawline and handsome hair. Even if the thought of Parrot made a fire of jealousy burn within her. Even if she just wanted to go over there and fall into Wifies’ arms like they weren't just friends.
“Anything I can do to help?” Wifies fidgeted with the very end of his shirt sleeve, tugging it around to help him.
“I.. don’t know.”
“Do you want me to go home?”
“I don’t know.”
“I’ll stay.” Wifies muttered out, the lo-fi music soothing his headache a little bit.
“I’m sorry for asking about Parrot.” Squiddo turned around in her seat again, desperately trying to push any sort of weird thoughts about her dear friend out of her head. Her solution was to distract herself by finishing the upload process.
“It’s alright, it was a fair question. Me and Parrot are practically over there gawking at each other. You aren’t the first one to ask.” Wifies kept his eye on the girl, watching intently as her pedicured nails tapped away. He needed his mind to calm it down.
“You aren’t the first to ask about Ash either. But, to conclude, no. I don’t like him.” She felt weird, she spent hours upon hours with Ash. Everyone presumed they liked each other, expectations through the roof all around. And the worst part was, Ash definitely likes her. “He likes me though.”
“Oh. Yeah, from what I’ve seen that’s a bit obvious.”
“I’m not sure how I’m gonna go about it.” Squiddo finally had uploaded the footage to her files, immediately taking the chance to open it up in her editing software.
“I mean, do you like anyone? Er- that’s too personal, don’t feel pressured to answer that.” Wifies panicked a bit, hand immediately in his hair messing with it.
Squiddo went quiet, mind rushing through a million things. She thought about all the art she’s made of her and Wifies, the countless animated segments alongside the extra full pieces she’s made just for her eyes. She thinks of the way jealousy rises within her at the mention of Parrot, or anyone Wifies could like. She thinks back to how many times she’s unconsciously caught herself staring at Wifies like he was the most handsome thing in the world, how many times she’s taken note of his small details, personality quirks, the undertone of his voice.
She thinks back to the countless times she’s wanted to ask Wifies to stay, the countless times she was begging to record again. She thinks back to the instant influx of more talking between them as they recorded together more, how much she just wished it didn’t have to end. She thinks about the slow behavior changes she’s experienced, the snappiness and weird snarky remarks, way different than her usual bubbly and happy demeanor. As if she was trying to push Wifies away before anything could happen.
She thinks about how much she wants to turn this chair around and go jump on Wifies, finally kiss him like her subconscious is begging for her to do.
“Squiddo?” Wifies's voice broke her out of her deep thought process, she was still hyper focused on starting her editing process. Suddenly much more motivated than usual.
“Nah, I don’t like anyone.” Squiddo lies straight out of her teeth, and Wifies, being the absolute genius he just has to be, immediately notices the weird tone to her voice. The one she has when she’s lying. He’s always picked up on it, she can’t lie for the life of her.
“You sure?” He wanted to check. There was no reason for her to lie unless it was, well, him. Or someone embarrassing, though he doubts it. It would explain the past few months of behavior, and the weird outburst she’s experienced today.
“It doesn’t matter.” Squiddo decided to close out of the editing software, standing up rather tense. She knew Wifies could spot it, he could spot anything if he really wanted to. He truly was just one of the smartest people she knew.
That was one thing she loved about him, not like she would even dare to entertain the thought.
Just like how Wifies wouldn’t dare to entertain the thoughts running through his head.
Wifies’s headache was still tormenting him, and Squiddo’s body was still exerted and tired. But they stared right at each other. Squiddo paused where she was standing, and Wifies sat completely still. His hands stopped fidgeting, and he could dull out the pain from his headache.
Squiddo gulped, she wasn’t ready to admit it. She wasn’t ready to admit she liked him, she didn’t want to. It felt as though she had lead on Ash for this entire time, as though she just couldn’t come to terms with the fact that she liked Wifies.
It felt almost wrong as she stood there and stared at the black haired man. Like all her emotions were coming to her, all the snarkiness and anger just immediately drained from her body. She wasn’t ready for this, she hadn’t even come to terms with herself yet.
But the way Wifies’s gaze had softened, mouth parting just barely, as if he was trying to get more air into his lungs. Just an extra gateway he needed beyond his nose. It made her heart twist.
It was getting darker out, sun setting in the distance, shining through her curtains to frame the moment at hand. The purple and orange sunshine came to rest along the edges of Wifies’s face. Along his hair, and jaw, and made his eyes glint in a way she couldn’t describe. She felt her breathing pick up, months had been leading up to this, she just wasn’t ready.
Squiddo knew, deep down, she did like Wifies. Squiddo knew that she wanted him more than anything in this world, that their recording sessions were the funnest moments of her life, that she wouldn’t choose anyone else to be with in those moments.
Nights of repression, nights of her pushing away thoughts she refused to have, all boiled down to this moment.
“Do you like anyone?” Wifies muttered under his breath, eyes remaining on hers.
“I don’t know.”
“I don’t think it matters.” Wifies stood up, striding over to her carefully. As he inched closer, Squiddo had no choice but to keep frozen where she was.
Wifies stood right in front of her, hand coming out to hold her cheek, pushing her hair behind her ear so as to not get in the way. Squiddo’s heart accelerated, there was no way this was about to happen. She kept their eyes together, even as nervousness and fear coursed through her bloodstream. One of his hands came to rest on her waist, thumb hooking through the belt loop on her jeans.
“Is this okay?” Wifies smiled, hand shaking from where it was resting on Squiddo’s cheek.
“Yeah.”
It was all she was able to get out before lips were being pressed to hers. She shut her eyes and let her hand come up around Wifies, holding onto his back. Her other hand ended up in his hair, pressing him closer just barely.
Squiddo let herself reciprocate, lips moving along Wifies’s slowly. It was soft, and extremely genuine. She’s never once seen Wifies so calm, so gentle. He’s always reserved, yes, but she never took him for this type.
Wifies pressed them up together as he kept their lips locked. Even with them close, and their arms all around each other, they didn’t let the kiss get out of hand. It wasn’t heated, it wasn’t sloppy, it didn’t have the faintest hint of tongue in it, just a connection. Wifies felt like he was going to explode with it, even though he initiated it, he couldn’t stop himself from freaking out internally.
Squiddo was the first to break away, eyes darting from Wifies’s face as she ran her fingers delicately through the man’s hair. He rubbed circles into her hip, trying to soothe her as he could feel her heart beat sky rocketing way faster than it should be.
Wifies couldn’t stop himself from pressing a kiss to her cheek, leaving a faint lipstick mark as he realized her lipstick transferred to him.
“Your lipstick got on me.” Wifies tries not to laugh, he watches Squiddo snort.
“It did, red is not your colour.” Squiddo comments as she pulls him into another kiss. It wasn’t fast or hurried, just them, together at this moment. She still couldn’t admit it, she still couldn’t wrap her head around her feelings, she just knew that this was right.
Wifies pulls away much faster than the first kiss. They stare at each other for a moment before Wifies registers a loud ringing from his intercom. Squiddo’s eyes widen as she steps back, pulling away from Wifies, him stumbling back too.
They stare at each other with a note of fear glazing their eyes as Parrot’s contact popped up as ringing. He cursed under his breath before picking up, putting his finger up to his mouth to signify for Squiddo to not say anything.
Squiddo felt her heart drop, but she tried to not let it get the best of her. It was just a kiss, tender and sweet sure, but it doesn’t mean she gets to freak out immediately.
“Parrot? Yeah hello, uh- What’s up?” He coughs out, shoving his hand in his pocket.
“Bro, where are you? I’m lonely and sad holed up in this room and you’re taking your sweet time.” Parrot spoke from over the other line, making Wifies realize he definitely has spent way over the designated time he was meant to spend here.
“I’m sorry me and Squiddo got caught up in editing, we thought maybe I could just stay here for the night?” Wifies asked, hesitantly. But it made Squiddo’s stomach immediately go back to normal, any fear she felt lifting as Wifies didn’t go to immediately ditch her.
“That’s alright, bro, don’t worry. I hope the recording was fun, I’m gonna go see if Derap will come over.” Parrot snickered to himself.
“Oh yeah, I’m so sure you want Derapchu in your room at this hour.”
“I don’t. Alright, go back to macking on Squiddo, goodnight Wifies.”
“What- What???” Before Wifies could question his best friend’s words, he had already hung up.
Wifies turned back to Squiddo, turning off his intercom immediately. Squiddo immediately approached him again, hugging him close to her. He immediately hugged her back, squeezing her tightly.
“Sorry about the interruption. He’s just like that.” Wifies chuckled as he kept Squiddo in his arms.
“Don’t worry about it.”
A short silence fell before Wifies went to speak.
“Do you wanna go to sleep? Today’s been a lot, we don’t need to talk feelings yet.” Wifies let go of her and sat down on the edge of the bed, very obviously worn out.
“Yeah, that’d be nice.”
“Change real quick, I’ll stay here.” Wifies smiled as he got into Squiddo’s bed fully, laying back against the bright orange pillows.
Squiddo didn’t say anything as she turned around to grab clothes from her chest and go change in her bathroom. She switched into an oversized shirt and pajama shorts before coming back into her bedroom. She noticed Wifies scrolling through Tiktok on his intercom, smiling to herself with a huge sense of pride swelling in her chest.
Squiddo quickly grabbed another shirt, throwing it at Wifies, interrupting his scrolling.
“Put that on, there’s no way you’re sleeping in a dress shirt like that.” Squiddo giggled as she watched him change his shirt in the most impractical way ever.
He put the shirt on over his head before trying to wiggle his way out of the shirt underneath, successfully managing to pull it over his head from under the other shirt. It was already much more comfortable than the tighter dress shirt he had on.
“Thanks, Squiddo. Now come here.” He gestured to the side next to him.
Squiddo happily hopped into her bed, tucking herself under the covers next to Wifies. She kept distance before Wifies wrapped an arm around her shoulder and tugged her next to him. She quickly wrapped an arm around his torso. He looked good in her shirt, it made her heart near explode.
Wifies wasn’t doing too much better himself as Squiddo hugged up on him, he hadn’t been this close to someone in, to be honest, years. Probably the last time he cuddled with someone was when he was a teenager, and he doesn’t even wanna think about his exes right now.
For now, Wifies shut down his intercom, getting fully under the covers himself as he turned to face Squiddo, wrapping his arms fully around her.
They took a moment to get fully situated, one of Squiddo’s legs trying to wrap around his waist. It was comfortable so he wasn’t one to say anything.
Wifies didn’t have anything to say for now, he didn’t want to make this awkward or anything, so he simply let them remain in silence as the two of them tried to go to sleep. With the lo-fi music remaining on in the background, it didn’t take long for Squiddo to drift off in Wifies arms. He just watched her in pure adoration, she was so stressed all day he was happy to see her at peace.
And for Wifies, he didn’t end up getting much rest. Not like he cared in the first place, with a gorgeous girl in his arms and a lot to talk about tomorrow, he had bigger things to focus on.
