Work Text:

Kris just jumped out their window.

Again.

That call from Carol...

Fuck, they were in some deep shit.

They hated this.

They finally found someone they feel comfortable with, and the first thing they have to do is stab her in the back.

Fuck my life,

They thought, making their way towards the lake absentmindedly. It was only when they smelled cigarette smoke that they snapped back to reality- realizing it was from the very place they were planning to go.

Who the hell...

Oh.

They sat down next to Susie silently, not making a comment on anything. The alcohol bottles, the cigarettes...

They didn't give a shit.

It seemed like Susie didn't either.

She offered Kris a puff silently. Kris took it. They needed it after... that.

Susie threw an empty beer bottle into the lake.

"God damn it."

She grumbled, covering her face with her hands.

"It just had to turn out like this."

Kris didn't comment. They just handed back the cigarette. Susie gladly took another huff.

There was a surprisingly comfortable silence between them for a minute, the wind howling.

"...Susie."

Kris said suddenly.

"...yeah?"

Susie replied.

A beat.

"...who am I to you?"

Another beat.

"Excuse me?"

Susie replied, sitting up fully. She looked thoroughly offended.

"You're everything to me. You're my best friend, you're the devil on my shoulder, the-"

She cut herself off.

Kris sighed. They took one of the beers and cracked it open, immediately downing about a fourth of it.

"...do you not believe that?"

Susie asked. Her tone was almost... defeated.

It shattered Kris' heart.

"No," They replied. "I do believe that."

Another pause. The waves crashed on the shore.

"After everything... why wouldn't I?"

Susie bit her lip at that. She didn't like the feeling in her stomach.

"...you better."

She grumbled. It was half-assed.

More silence.

"...where'd you get all this, anyway?"

Kris asked, trying to lighten the mood.

"Sans."

Susie replied blankly.

Kris snorted.

"Sans? Sans gave you cigs and beer?"

Their smile faded slightly.

"...I guess that checks out..."

Susie frowned. Right, the whole Sans and Toriel situation... she felt so bad for leaving Kris like that, but... they were here now.

That's what mattered.

"I, uh..."

Susie started awkwardly.

"I can give you your own cig if you want one."

Kris shook their head.

"Nah, I don't mind sharing when it's with you."

Susie blushed lightly, but shook it off before it got noticeable.

The two sat in silence for a moment, more comfortable than the last. And... although everything was so fucking shitty right now...

They felt okay.

"...hey, Susie?"

Kris mumbled, half hoping she wouldn't hear them.

"Yeah?"

Susie replied, her barely concealed tail flicking lightly.

"...I think I've realized the gravity of our situation."

A beat.

"...and, because of that... I feel the need to confess something. Something I've been... keeping from you."

Susie froze slightly.

"...go on, then."

There was a tense silence.

"I've been working with the Knight. A-and before you freak out-"

They took a deep breath.

"I don't want to. I never wanted to, I hate having to lie to you- a-and I'd choose you over them at any time, but I can't j-just leave-"

They sputtered, but they were cut off by something.

Something forceful, but not in a bad way.

A kiss.

"Shut up. Shut up right now."

Susie commanded. Kris obliged, flushed a deep red.

"I don't give a shit who you're working with or- or who's side you're on. As long as we're still close like this, you could be a fucking- I dunno, fuckin- anti-abortions- or something, I wouldn't care."

A beat.

"Because I need you, Kris."

She took a shaky breath.

"Because I love you, Kris."

Kris' breath hitched. Their entire world narrowed down to this moment- to her breath on their face, to her hair blowing slightly in the wind...

To Susie.

And they didn't care about anything else anymore- their mom, the Knight, Asriel-

All they cared about was Susie.

So they kissed her.

Again, and again.

Small pecks on the lips, punctuated by small sobs of utter joy.

And, when the two finally pulled away fully... they just hugged each other, both too overwhelmed with joy to speak.

Until Kris finally whispered:

"I love you too."
